5 out of 5 stars gets better with age.......2007-01-11

I don't like to throw 5 star reviews around when there are so many other ones here, but considering the play time this disc has received in my car, I can't justify anything less. It's not as heavy or over the top like some of their old milestone albums, but there's an underlying seriousness to this one that, in many ways, is much more effective. Interestingly, my least favorite track is the title track, but the entire album works well to listen to from start to finish. No matter how much Anathema has changed, I feel like they still make songs that I have no problems identifying with. It's not perfect, and, yeah, some parts work better than others, but I can overlook those flaws because I never get the sense that they don't stand behind their music. It's a great album, and I hope listeners will allow time to have it grow on them.

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest and most progressive and beautiful albums ever..........2006-10-02

Sure, Anathema started out as a British Doom Metal group, being one of the great pioneers of the genre. They released a few albums of Doom Metal, nothing that ever caught my attention. I absolutely hate Doom Metal in all of its forms. The slow, dragging out of songs, the all too common and repetitive depressing lyrics, and the annoying vocals. There isn't much room for imaginitive or creative musicianship because everything seems to be done at a slow snails pace. Its all the same to me.
Then, Anathema decided to let go of the past, and embrace the present and changed their style up slowly, shedding the growls and the intense Doom approach and took on a more rock approach. Still depressing, but it was a start.
Then along comes "A Fine day to Exit", and their Magnum Opus, "A Natural Disaster". Two albums that have totally stepped away from their past and their Doom roots and into the wonderful and beautiful spacious world of ART-Rock, a genre that trascends traditional rock and alternative music and is more of an intense feeling of atmospheric and ambient rock that captures the heart and touches the soul.
"A Natural Disaster" in my opinion is Anathema's best album ever. Sure, the lyrics are still depressing and sad, but this time their approach is different. Taking on a more intellectual and artistic approach, "A Natural Disaster" works on so many different levels. A heavy influence and range of electronic elements and progressive rock elements make this album must have. Some compare "A Natural Disaster" to other artists like Radiohead. I would say that to an extent this is true, but only in the ambience and atmospheric way.
Literally, this album is one whole progression of musical climax and bliss.
There is so much beauty in this album, you have to hear it to understand. Epic songs like "Balance", "Closer", "Are you there?", "Pulled under at 2000 meters a second", "A Natural Disaster", "Flying", "Electricity" and "Violence" just grab your heart and your soul and they never let go. Compositions that are sonically and dynamically perfect along with vocals and lyrics that are top notch and fit the moods perfectly, this album is pure perfection.
The eerie and sadness of "Electricity" makes the hairs on my body stand even to this day and I have heard that song a million times. The climax is so beautiful.
"Flying" is a poignant song that is so atmospheric its amazing.
There is way too much to say about each song on this album and not enough time, you MUST buy this! If you like ART-Rock or emotional music you will love this album!
Sure, they ditched their Doom metal for a more poppy/Radiohead-ish/Coldplay sound but with more Progressive elements, but who cares? It works really well for them, like this was what they were meant to do. Go to their web site(do a search for it), they explain how they lost a lot of fans and how many of their die hard fans do not understand why they changed styles, and the band explains that they are about letting go of the past, experiencing a moment and moving on and that they have grown as humans and as musicians, and naturally with all growth, you are lead onto different paths. True, amazing artists change and flow with time and world, their work is never the same. Anathema are TRUE amazing artists.
The beauty on this disc is un-matched and I am suprised that "A Natural Disaster" did not elevate Anathema into worldwide popularity status(not that I would want them to become poster boys and girl and sell out, but its really that good). The sheer depth of each song is well crafted and much better than anything I have ever heard of theirs, and I have heard it all. Much more can be said through silence, mellow music and clean sun vocals than can ever be achieved through raspy and growly vocals with tons of distorted guitar. The piano on this album says it all in a forray of emotions.I highly recommend this album to everyone who appreciates ART-Rock or amazing music and beautiful music.

1 out of 5 stars This is the same band that brought us Pentecost?.......2006-02-28

This is ridiculous, I can't believe any of you people actually like this. Well, actually I can seeing as how people listen to Marilyn Manson and the like, but to the person who told me to go listen to linkin park and fred durst because I don't like this...
That's like telling a Jessica Simpson fan to listen to Ashlee Simpson if he/she doesn't like it. Grow up kid(s) and stop giving these bumbling idiots your money.

5 out of 5 stars Maturity.......2005-11-14

It's been a fun and eventful journey listening to anathema mature, developing from their doom metal beginnings, hearing those first shy and guilty grasps toward harmony and melody, in time learning, gaining courage, growing, perfecting.
Listening to "alternative 4" there's no more doubt that anathema are speeding toward becoming accomplished alt-rock artists, the following "judgment" only confirms this and comes as crowning moment of their journey and all they've become.

Preceded by "resonance", a best of compilation, as though hinting at closing a chapter, out comes the troubling and controversial "a fine day to exit", taking a step further, forsaking all overt metal elements it employs some digital instruments and what can be best described as a metal-twinged trip hop atmosphere. The album at times erratic in styles, like in the case of "panic" sounding like punk-metal, shows a band in ambitious creative turmoil, reaching further and experimenting, sometimes falling tripped by it's own overeager footsteps, sometimes succeeding marvelously.

Finally, "a natural disaster" arrives, a mature and complete work of art, made by a group of artists comfortable with them selves and their desires, comfortable with their abilities and skills. Craftily combining the past and present, the best elements of the "judgment" era and the experimentation of "a fine day to exit". As such, a vocoder can be heard over the familiar metal harmonies of yesterday, without each component seeming out of place, but completing each other, just as anathema has finally gathered all the elements and completed it self as a mature and significant band of the alternative scene, with a sound and style of their own.

Offering a fine selection of hits from yore and yon. One of West Virginia's gems of musical talent, Joe Dobbs has fiddle tones that make you want to jump up and jig. I especially like song No. 10 - Furniture man. It offers a peek into the fun of the 20's and the people of an era gone. Keep up the hard work boys and you'll go far....or maybe around the block a few times.

          2 out of 5 stars Why...?.......2004-02-02

This album thoroughly disappointed me. I had been holding my breath for two years for this record, and when I put it in, I was blown away; but not in a good way. There's not much to say, except that the overall quality of the songs is mediocre at best, and John Douglas (who has always been such a tasteful drummer) somehow manages to heavy-handedly destroy every song that had a possibility of being enjoyable. I hope this album is just a fluke and that Anathema has not left us forever...

          4 out of 5 stars A natural achievement.......2003-12-30

A Natural Disaster is a beautiful album, full of great melodies, musical ideas, song structures and just the perfect amount of aggression. It works on a global level, was made to be listened from beggining to end and it is never boring or uninteresting.
This is not the doom/death Anathema we all knew some years ago, instead we have a band were the influences of Radiohead, Portishead and other more commercial, melodic bands is visible, something they have hinted with the previous A Fine Day To Exit, only this time the Pink Floyd influence is not so strong.
Even with all these influences coming from outside the metal area this is still easily a record recognizable as Anathema, and i don't think this will appeal to fans of more commercial music, as it don't have the pop groove ,that makes Radiohead so big, for example.

The album kicks off with three great songs, that instantly set the ambient for the whole thing, with the end part of Balance as the higlight. The uninspired Are You There? only makes the intermission Childhood Dream fit perfectly, and then the second half of the record just gives you some more agressiveness alonside strong melodies, something more in the vein of Judgment. Pulled Under At 2000 Meters A Second and Violence will appeal to the fans of the more heavy Anathema, while A Natural disaster show us the best they can do on the commercial side of music.

In my opinion, lyrically the album is not so strong as musically, with some cliches being used here and there.

The artwork is beautiful and it makes this album worthy of a vinil release.

4 out of 5 stars Conflicting kind of album.......2003-12-29

This is definitely a mood-centric album. And after inventing a term, I have to describe it, so...

By mood-centric, I mean that enjoyment of this album is more based in a feeling than an appreciation of the songs themselves. Have a listen to 'Are You There?' (which is available for free download from Anathema's site...or was at last check), and you'll see what it means. These songs will put you in a mood, but you have to be half-way there already or it just won't work.

None of the songs here are particularly strong from a songwriting standpoint. It's in the atmosphere where 'A Natural Disaster' shines. Wind-swept backgrounds and blurriness are the staples here, and they work. For the most part. If you're trying to listen to this album on poor speakers, it'll fail miserably. Headphones work better, a surround sound system is best. Immersion is the point. Anathema have worked very hard to get the spectral effects down pat, and little flitting synth effects are the stars of the album.

Side note that's not really too important: the artwork for the album truly is beautiful. It fits very well with the music itself.

Anathema are going in a direction more towards the niche. I don't pretend to know exactly what they're doing, but I'll admit they've become more unique. Where they are right now is wedged inbetween the Anathema of 'Judgment' and the band Antimatter (which features a former member of Anathema and *another* Cavanaugh...how many are there?!). I hope they don't quite as far as Antimatter, but experimentation is fine by me.

          2 out of 5 stars Major disappointment.......2003-12-24

The only good thing about this album is the wonderful cover. There are too many ideas and styles here and none of them are mature enough to be considered for an album. This sounds like random selected Anathema songs that did not make it on to previous albums. This cd is boring just like A fine day to exit was. If they listened to it Beavis would probably turn to Butthead and say hey you fell asleep dude. Sounds a lot like Radiohead in many places. Progress and innovation is good but can't it please be in the direction of Judgement? Even if you are a hardcore fan this album will still disappoint you.

3 out of 5 stars Too many sounds..........2003-12-21

          This album is alright...

I'm not giving it 3 stars because of the change like some people might have mentioned, I knew Anathema would be changing as soon as I first listened to "A fine day to exit".

This CD is just too mixed up with different sounds. I think they should have stuck with ONE sound...female vocals, computerized vocals, 1 or 2 more "hard" songs and the rest reminds me of stuff from "judgement" and "a fine day to exit" Its too much, they are such great musicians and some of the songs are amazing but this album as a whole just doesn't do it for me. In a way I think this was just an experimental album, maybe the next will be a little bit more focused, I'm still a hardcore fan anyways =)
