5 out of 5 stars All Metal Operas Rock.......2007-02-26

Buy the 3 disc version to see the interviews and how the album came together. Very interesting and satisfying story. Everything about this cd is beautiful. If you like power metal then here is another must have cd in my opinion. I will never stop listening to this album. All I can do is glorify this to let you know that it shines bright.

5 out of 5 stars Pretty much Movie/Broadway material.......2006-07-04

Okay, so I got this album and was thinking "Man Oh man!, a metal opera!" so I popped it in and listened. The intro of piano and strings caught my attention, and after finding the lyrics to the album, I was hooked. Now this album, I admit, would not be for the super metal fans who want non-stop fast tunage.

This, if you could open your mind a little further, would proove worthy of Broadway prodution, or even a movie. Songs such as "Naschtok Is Born" and "Flight of Torek" are very well composed metal tunes. While on the Broadway/opera side of things there must be slow songs, such as "Silver Maiden" and "Lalae Amêr" (which I personally am appreciative because of the language that had to be made up for it) And a very noticable Broadway-like song , "Oriana's Wrath" and if you say it's not then you must have not heard what a Broadway show sounds like

NOTE AGAIN: this is NOT for the metal fan looking for non-stop fast paced insanity

This is more for the metal fan who can appreciate it like a good fantasy novel, except in metal opera form.

As for the music and vocals, it pretty much blew me away. Every guest in this epic has phenomenal voice, especialy Thomas Rettke, particularly in the song "Naschtok is Born". Glenn Hughes also did very well in "Talon's Last Hope". As for the music section, Robert Hunecke-Rizzo did a terrific job. And the composition of the stings is spectacular, thank you Miro!

The story and lyrics (written by Amanda Somerville) is entrancing, though also I give probs to it because of its originality. The fictional language used and the names and storyline are marvelous. And finally, a gigantic thanks to Sascha Paeth for producing this awesome piece of meatal-opera history.

All in all, I'm eagerly awaiting to hear if this is going to make it to Broadway or film. If you enjoy Broadway and are at least somewhat a power-metal fan, this would make a fabulous collection to your music library. A must buy

4 out of 5 stars Would Be My Favorite Album If It Weren't For A Few Tracks.......2005-04-27

This is an amazing album. It has a great story, nothing like Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, I don't see anything the same besides a made up language. Anyway this album contain my favorite song ever, and that is the Seige Of Aina, where it seems the best person on this album Thomas Rettke (Heavens Gate) Proves why he should get the most face time on this album. He is an amazing villian, and his tracks are by far the best on the album.

Now I gave this CD only 4 stars because the only way to listen to this cd and enjoy it is to skip a lot of the songs. THe tracks to skip are 3,11,12, and 15. besides that this album is perfect, so check it out.

4 out of 5 stars A great listen but...........2005-04-09

I enjoyed this disc and the songs that stand out to me are "The Siege of Aina", "The Beast Within","The Son of Sorvahr", and "Oriana's Wrath". The only thing is... Symphony of Enchanted Lands 2: The Dark Secret blows this out of the water. Don't get me wrong. The time and effort put into this had to be tremendous. There are just other bands that take the metal/opera genre to another level. I do recommend this. It is still quite good.

3 out of 5 stars Avantasia is WAY better!.......2005-04-08

Before I review this disc, I need to make it clear that I only purchased it because I read that Michael Kiske and Tobias Sammet sang on it. These two guys are my all-time favorite singers, but I'm especially partial to Tobias Sammmet, so try to collect absolutely anything I can find that he's been involved with.
Anyway, with that being said, I simply can't get into the Aina project. Many of the prior reviews have already expressed my feelings to an extent, so I won't go into tremendous detail. Except for the singers I mentioned above, I just didn't care for any of the vocalists on this disc. Also, for me at least, none of the songs were at all memorable, especially when compared to the material in the Avantasia project.
The Aina story didn't make all that much sense to me either, and it seems as if whoever wrote the songs was trying to force the story to be told in the lyrics, and there were simply too many words to make the songs sound good; not sure if that makes sense, but I think what I'm trying to say is that none of these songs are particularly easy to sing along with.
Bottom line, this disc was a pretty big disappointment for me. I think that the singers did their best to make the songs sound good, but not even great singers can do much with wordy, easily forgetable songs.

5 out of 5 stars Just Short of Awesome!.......2004-04-18

There is very little to complain about here. I love Avantasia, Edguy, Stratovarius and lots of Power Metal. The concept of having another masterpiece to devour thrilled me, and AINA didn't disappoint one bit.

There's lots of variety on this release. That may lead some metal heads to be less than enthusiastic. There are some ballads, and there are some "showy tunes" on here. Not broadway show tunes, mind you, just tunes that aren't "true metal". These songs do have a place in setting the tone for the storytelling, and they fit in wonderfully. There are several epic songs here, and they all tell the story of AINA well. You can tell that there were four people in charge of the project, with the variety of ideas blending nicely.

The metal songs kick a**, but if you're looking for an album that's metal from start to finish, this isn't it. AINA is a great release. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to any fan of the genre.

5 out of 5 stars The album of the year for 2004.......2004-03-31

Aina is not just a metal opera, it spans many genres of music that go from power metal to classical to oriental. There is one song that Disney should be so lucky to have as a soundtrack (Silver Maiden - especially the track on Disk 2 by the beautiful Amanda Somerville). From beginning to end, the story is perfectly arranged and the atmosphere is so real that you are drawn into this epic tale.
The concept, story and lyrics are from the newcomer Amanda Somerville. She also sings in several of the songs and what a voice she has. Keep an eye on this one - I predict great things to come.
The first thing that will hit you with this Limited Edition album is the packaging: a 64 page digi-book with 2 CD's and a DVD. The artwork in the book is masterful - sepia tones to vivid colors. It includes the entire story, lyrics, credits and more.
Disc 1 is the entire opera comprising 73 minutes and 16 tracks that will set you free. It is performed by some of the biggest names in rock and reads like a who's who in the industry - all of them well known individually or from their bands: Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Edguy & Avantasia, Candice Knight, Sass Jordan, T.M. Stevens, Rhapsody and many more. One other thing to note: there is a hidden track!
Disk 2 has a 15-minute track, The Story of Aina, that is an exceptional arrangement of the entire opera. This disk also has a number of songs that were demos of songs on the 1st Disk. The last number, with Sebastian Thomson narrating the entire story, uses the 1st track as the background music.
The DVD is a very interesting touch. It has a 3-D computer animation of the song The Beast Within and an all too short The Making of Aina - a great video of the entire production of this epic tale. There are more pictures and artwork as well on the DVD.
It says in the book, "To Be Continued". I can hardly wait.
All in all: This is THE Album of the year.

2 out of 5 stars Too much fuss for a mediocre album...with great vocalists.......2004-03-26

I was waiting very anxiously for this relish, as I had read many great things about it...I was actually expecting a groundbreaking record considering guest musicians, the budget and other rumors.
But to my surprise Days Of Rising Doom was far from great!
First of all the title "metal opera" is really misleading. The songs can't be categorized as metal except for a few, but by any means can this be considered a metal opera.

The music all in all is (simple) progressive rock with metal influences and a few good ballads.

Suprisingly the hard-rock (metal) songs were weaker than the ballads. In my opinion most of the ballads on this album are great, although mostly because they are sang by Michael Kiske, Amanda Somerville and Candice Night.
The best songs of the album are "Silver Maiden' and 'Serindipity', Michael Kiske is magnificent! The only worthy hard songs are 'Flight Of Torek' and 'Rebellion'.

There are MANY great vocalists (and rock-metal legends) participating in this project but only few of them achieve a memorable performance. Glenn Hughes (altough he overdoes it in parts) and Candice Night are some of them...
Michael Kiske is the most captivating male vocalist here.He sings in a wonderful, soft, melodic and emotional way, which he hasn't done in his previous works. His voice is still outstanding and natural.

It has to be said that Days of Rising Doom achieves a more operatic feel compared to other metal operas, such as Avantasia. The boys choir is incredible (well done). But the story of the album is tiresome and most songs seem to belong on a soundtrack. There are some great moments in the CD, but unfortunately the album as a whole doesn't sound outstanding or anything like that...

Wouldn't recommend it at all to Power Metal fans. Some progressive rock (hard rock) fans may enjoy it. Don't get carried away by the huge list of guests and incorrect rumors...

5 out of 5 stars This is gonna be awesome, an instant buy for me.......2004-01-24

I havent heardthis metal opera yet but im sure it will be almost as spectacular as avantasia.
