1 out of 5 stars Warning ! This is not the original sound track !!.......2006-08-03

Bear in mind this is not the original Pink Panther sound track, even though they deceptively make it look as if it is. I purchased this CD specifically for the number Claudia Cardinale sings, but to my great disappointment her song is not included and they substitute the corny instrumental in it's place. I feel cheated, and believe they should make it clear that this CD may not contain the tracks one may be looking for...

5 out of 5 stars Like The Movie, Only Better.......2006-05-23

The Pink Panther became a "property" for Peter Sellers and many other writers and actors - and it's not hard to imagine how they came to dislike the many limitations of character and comic possibilities.

However, the first movie showed the most originality and life. And the same could be said for Henry Mancini's score. Before the Inspector becomes a complete buffoon, the storyline called for a great deal of sophistication, mystery and intrigue, and Mancini delivered it all and more.

There are many great tracks here, foremost of which was the theme itself. However, "Meglio Stasera" stands as a great hallmark of this mid-1960s era.

"If you're ever gonna kiss me - it had better be tonight."

Go - go - GO!

5 out of 5 stars Cool and Blissful Soundtrack.......2006-03-07

Henry Mancini's classic soundtrack to THE PINK PANTHER is very timely for the carefree period in which it was released and captures the feel of this film and those great times that still resonate in the mind. THE PINK PANTHER theme is an endearing and enduring melody that has become instantly identifiable with both the cartoon character and the film series. The soundtrack captures a lot of source music that was certainly in vogue and has captured that tantalizing cocktail jet set quality in the numerous compositions especially in IT HAD BETTER BE TONIGHT. The aplomb and easy nature of this recording is on target capturing the great feel of this film giving the listener the chance to relive the experience.

2 out of 5 stars Fran Jeffries Sang "It had Better be Tonight" in the film.......2004-10-07

Actually, that was Fran Jeffries who sang that version of "It Had Better be Tonight" in the film. She played the role of the "Greek" Cousin. Visit this link for an excellent biography and discography:

http://www.swinginchicks.com/workinitfordaddy.htm

It received a lot of top 40 radio play after the film release. Don't know why it has not appeared on any of the compilations.

3 out of 5 stars Missing the best part!.......2004-07-24

Overall, this cd is good. But there is a MAJOR part missing. "It Had Better Be Tonight" was a highlight of the movie; presented like a music video, it featured a fabulous performer (Fran Jefferies, I have now been informed) all swinging sixties & mod loveliness, singing in ITALIAN. So, where is she on this re-released cd? She contributed quite alot to the film and to be left off the soundtrack is a big let down. I bought this hoping to hear her singing and was left with a chorus singing in English...So, besides that, the cd is as fun as everything Mancini should be.

What a band. It's too bad Yow isn't singing with the mike stuck in his throat like he did with the Lizard, but the upside is that you can understand all the evil things he's saying. Song 4 is extremely powerful.

4 out of 5 stars The dark primordial pool from which evolved the mighty Jesus Lizard.......2006-04-06

This is a great collection, everything Scratch Acid did is on this one CD. I call that a bargain. Scratch Acid are the band that bassist David Wm. Sims and vocalist David Yow were in from 1982-1987 before their tenure in the amazing Jesus Lizard. Musically SA aren't that far from Jesus Lizard, perhaps a tad bluesier, and much looser, not as mathematically intense, recalling Capt. Beefheart and The Birthday Party. Lyrically and vocally SA mine much the same territory as Yow would explore with the Lizard ie insanity. He developed his entirely unique style that relies on an agonized moaning and sometimes incomprehensible but always intense vocalizations, in other words howling, in Scratch Acid. This is punk when punk wasn't cool, 4 intense young men creating some of the more unique music of the eighties without hope of commercial success. God bless 'em. If you like Jesus Lizard, you'll probably like Scratch Acid.

4 out of 5 stars The seeds of the Jesus Lizard.......2005-08-31

Stop! Add this one to your list! I have contempt for people who call themselves rock music fans and don't own this record in multiple formats.

5 out of 5 stars Real American Folk Music.......2005-08-31

If you know who Scratch Acid is, then you shouldn't need any encouragement to buy this - it's basically all of their music on one cd. If You DON'T know who they are, they were one of the first post-punk American bands (along with Flipper, Big Black, Minutemen etc.). It's a bunch of kids with nothing much to look forward to, and an uncanny gift for giving chaos a good beat that you can dance to, sometimes. There're a lot of bourgeois young people who think that playing an acoustic guitar and singing about Joni Mitchell's feelings is "authentic". I wouldn't know about that; I just know that no one asked these kids to make music, or offered them any money (at first), but they did it anyway.

5 out of 5 stars Soothing to the senses.......2002-10-03

Isn't this whole CD sweet? I can play this all day and never tire of it! I love music that's easy on the ears. You can enjoy this anytime/anywhere: trying to make it through the work-day, while you're stuck in 5:00 traffic and how about during that long, after-work bubble bath?

I'd give it 10 stars if I could!

4 out of 5 stars A great CD but beware of the "Updated" Version.......2001-07-09

The CD is really good, but I know for a fact that it was recalled and the last track, "Innocence", was replaced with the Intrumental version of "Titanic - My Heart will go on".

If you collect Kenny G's music though, you will then I suppose want both. I bought the first edition and then the newly released one.

This CD is worth getting though.

5 out of 5 stars Some Will Never Figure It Out.......2001-06-09

Back in the mid to late 80's when Kenny G came on the scene there were instrumentalists who had already achieved pop success. People like Chuck Mangione, George Benson (although his singing is great also) and Herb Alpert come to mind immediately. These musicians have enriched popular music by incorporating fantastic creativity into undeniably melodic forms. It is the combination of the two which makes songs like Benson's "Breezin'", Mangione's "Give It All You Got" and Kenny G's "Songbird" continue to stand the test of time. Kenny G has taken popular song structure and infused it with ELEMENTS of rhythm & blues and jazz to create beautiful melodies such as those in "Songbird", "Silhouette" and "Coming Home" among many others. I remember when the breathakingly romantic sound of "Songbird" first graced the airwaves. It was a refreshing break from the norm on pop radio and it reached across racial and cultural barriers. People who truly understand and enjoy Kenny G's wonderful gifts of melody and composition are comprised of people of many backgrounds. The collection here is a must if you enjoy a sensitive, heartfelt yet passionate approach to music made for peoples' enjoyment. For all those people who snub their nose at Kenny G, that is their choice. I do have to wonder, though, what their reasoning is. Is it because in a number of reader's polls in magazines that Kenny G was rated #1 jazz artist? Guess what? Kenny G has never called himself a "jazz" artist nor has he ever selected such a category for his music! Kenny certainly incorporates elements of jazz improvisation into his playing, but that's about as far as it goes. (And from what I hear, he puts on a great live show.) For people to vote for Kenny G as the #1 jazz artist only shows their lack of understanding and appreciation for the genre. But folks, don't take it out on Kenny. I'm sure he's flattered to know that people enjoy his music but I know he had to be shaking his head when he saw his name at the top of the list under best jazz artists. I just had to clear this up because I get tired of people taking shots at Kenny G based on their own ignorance. If you never REALLY listened to his music, now's the time to give it a try. This collection will serve well in listening while driving, relaxing at home or enjoying an intimate dinner with your spouse. So, put away the preconceived notions, sit back, listen and enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Light Classics for Christmas.......2002-12-07

This is one of two holiday discs that pops conductor/arranger Richard Hayman recorded for the budget classical label Naxos (the other being entitled "Joy to the World" which is a fine, and admittedly more "up beat", companion disc). The performances are very strong and it starts off with Leroy Anderson's medley of popular Christmas carols. Other highlights include Frederick Delius' rarely heard "Sleigh Ride" which nicely depicts a moolit sleigh ride, quite a departure from Leroy Anderson's more popular composition but equally as effective. There are also some unique pieces here which you don't come across too often such as the excerpts from the scores to "The Greatest Story Ever Told" and "Gift of the Magi" and the "Winter" movements from Glazunov's "The Seasons".

All in all a relaxing "pops" program of holiday themed music with some nice departures from the usual fare.

(I too am familiar with the Boston Pops 'A Christmas Festival' CD on RCA Gold Seal - conducted by Fiedler, which is still available, and is another excllent CD. The selections are totally different and to me both are worthy additions to any holiday music collection.)

1 out of 5 stars Not the Original.......2002-10-15

Leroy Anderson put out an album of Christmas music titled "A Christmas Festival". Unfortunately, this is not it. This album has one recording of a song by the same name, and even it is not conducted by Leroy Anderson and his orchestra. I cannot say that we have been duped as the contents of this album are plainly listed by Amazon. It's just a shame that it is not the original, and it uses the title, which is misleading. Overall, this is basically classical music compositions, slow and dreary to the ear. Guaranteed to put you right to sleep.
If anyone knows where to find the original "Leroy Anderson's A Christmas Festival" on CD, please tell me.

This CD is my favorite. Especially, I like tracks 10 and 12.
Track 10 sounds like monks chanting in a monastery. And Track 12 sounds as if it was recorded at the sea, with waves crashing at the beach. Just look at the names of the songs... they are futuristic and out of this world. Buy this CD, it will make you feel good.

5 out of 5 stars Mantovani's "Greatest Gift": The Last Original Recording.......2006-08-29

This newly released CD includes the last original Mantovani LP recorded in Paris in 1975. The health of Mantovani, the grand master of light orchestral music, was deteriorating at this time, but his music was gaining new fans and popularity in the seventies with the issuance by Readers Digest of many compilations of his recordings made in the prior two decades. The "Greatest Gift" component of this two CD set includes Henry Mancini's sentimental theme from the movie, "The Return of the Pink Panther"; and a masterful Mantovani treatment of "Send in the Clowns"; also, one of the earliest of a very long line of John Barry's sensuous movie themes from the film "The Day of the Locust" which by the way, starred Keifer Sutherland's Dad in 1975. Also included here, not previously on CD, is the hauntingly beautiful melody, "Cool Summer Evening," the last of Mantovani's more than 100 stunning musical compositions of his own creation. Coupled in this package as a special bonus are 16 tracks of memorable music from two British musicals, "Oliver" and "Stop the World, I Want to Get Off" recorded in 1962. "Oliver" of course became one of the most honored Broadway and Hollywood success stories, and Mantovani's arrangements of Lionel Bart's classic tunes, "Where is Love", "As Long as He Needs Me," and "Consider Yourself" are just a few of the orchestral gems that will have listeners humming and singing along. In the "Stop the World" segment, the genius of Mantovani is applied to the songs made famous by the brilliant Anthony Newley and the sensational Sammy Davis Jr. The CD is a 77 minute musical tribute to some of the finest modern popular composers and singers of "standards", the maestro among them who was one of their greatest musical interpreters in the twentieth century. This CD is a "must-have" for Mantovani fans and anyone who desires to listen to excellence in easy listening (but not elevator) music.

At the first few listens, i liked several songs a lot but thought the rest were quite simple and bland. However, i've really come to appreciate the quality of each song, which, although instantly accesable, still stand the test of time. A truly fantastic album, brimming with melody and emotion.
Songs like oh river, promise me and when we say are so jam packed with melodious goodness it's hard to stop listening to them.

5 out of 5 stars Heavy groove-ladden music with a dose of soulful vocals.......1999-09-26

This much overlooked band have made one of the best albums I have heard in a long time. Moving away from the stereotypical view of emo-core with tight and crisp production, "The Greatest Gift" knocks the listener to a state of utter paralysis with its hard edged guitar riffs and pounding grooves. In contrast to this the beautiful voice of Lewis uplifts the soul, and takes the sound to another level. Songs like "Oh River" pack as much punch as any Deftones song you can pick, while "ABC...Giant steps" is like U2 at their most soulful!!! Then there are songs like "Stuffed" and the beautifully deadly "Falling out" which strike a perfect Ying and Yang between the neo-metal riff and a ballad. Moving away from the angst and anger heard so often in records today, the lyrics actually have something to say, once the listner is in Lewis's head theres no way back. This band is no one hit wonder each track produces a gem that sticks to your head like a good Red Hot Chilli Peppers track. So if your in to crunching music with staccato riffs but you also have a soft spot for a good ballad like "Scar Tissue" Liberty 37's Album "The Greatest Gift" is exactly what it markets itself to be.
