4 out of 5 stars Another one from Sweden...........2002-02-21

Alright, another power-melodic-metal band from Sweden...Big deal, you'd think... But Nocturnal Rites is full of strong points. In other aspects than the terrible cliched lyrics, the band is better than most. The keyboards not overwhelm the songs. The singer knows when tobe restrained and when to go for it with lungs full! The band does not try to prove they are better than the rest, so they don't try to make those awful orchestrated arrangments.
THE SACRED TALISMAN is sheer epic metal, and not a presposterous attempt to be symphonic!!

2 out of 5 stars Blah, boring, trite.......2002-01-12

Title says it all. I find this CD to be tedious and devoid of any musical inspiration. End of story.

5 out of 5 stars Where's my sword and armour?.......2001-11-06

Let's put this into perspective - Nocturnal Rites are not making any excuses. Yes, the lyrics are cheesy, and now we know what the singer of Europe has been up to since singing about Final Countdowns, but this is pure fantasy/power metal at its finest.

Great melodies, fantastic guitar playing (crossing over influences between late 80's Maiden and Malmsteen), and loud in your face type anthems (without the hysterical 'whoa whoa's' that damage Hammerfall). The singer has the strongest of Northern European accents, even pronouncing the 'r' in 'Iron', but all is forgiven for the overall effect of simple fantasy heavy metal. That's where Nocturnal Rites succeed - they follow the power metal recipe perfectly without trying to sway away and make for the trendy crowds at the bar. Even Iced Earth can be accused of losing the plot from time to time - as witnessed in Horror Show, but Nocturnal Rites stick to their guns.

By the way, check out the guitar solo in "Legend lives on" - turn up the volume and feel those goosebumps!

4 out of 5 stars Is it possible not to adore this record?.......2001-09-11

There are many CDs in this world that take several listens to acquire a taste for. Even some of what become my favorite records go through this process. "The Sacred Talisman" was not one of these records, and it probably won't be for you, either, if you like power metal. The opening riff of the first song, "Destiny Calls" captures the listener instantly, and song by song, "Talisman" never lets go.

I often go through the mental debate as to whether I prefer this record or HammerFall's "Legacy of Kings." If you liked "Legacy" you owe it to yourself to get "Talisman." Each contains some incredible power metal. But, as was the case with "Legacy" I can't really give "Talisman" five stars, simply because this record doesn't display a whole lot of originality or sophistication.

Nevertheless, some of my favorite songs are on here ("The Iron Force" "When Fire Comes To Ice" "Glorious"), and every song is good. Also, the singer, Anders Zackrisson, was my favorite power metal singer when he was with NR.

If you're into the 80's style, sword-and-sorcery bands of power metal and you don't own "The Sacred Talisman," you owe it to yourself to buy it IMMEDIATELY.

5 out of 5 stars Impressed yet again..........2001-09-01

Nocturnal Rites has the best music! I love everyone of their cds, and this one sure didn't let me down! There is a little bit of everything for all tastes, except maybe you country bumpkins...;) Highly recommend!

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS GREAT STUFF!.......2000-07-26

This cd is even better than the official cd because it`s including the VERY GOOD song "Journey through time", which is not included on the original cd. The strenght with this album is that there is no bad songs at all. Everyone is perfect and how often does that happen? I like "Destiny calls", "Eternity holds", "ride on" and the marvelous powerballad "the legend lives on" best. But as I said before, there is not a weak point on this record. They got a really great lead guitar player who knows how to compose brilliant solos, a great singer and a very good keybord player. Mixed all together they create magic...
