Best Live Metal Album Ever!.......2007-05-22

In my opinion the best live heavy metal album ever made. I should qualify this by saying that I'm by no means a Metal devotee but I've never heard anything faster, tougher, nastier, stronger or sonically clearer from any other Metal band than this wonderful onslaught to my ears. It's a beautifully violent speed assault to the senses. `Ace of Spades', `Motorhead' and `Bomber' are all more impressive here than the studio versions and there's absolutely no filler tracks on this album. I remember that this was a massive success in the U.K. when it first came out to a lot of people's surprise and then people couldn't really figure out if `Motorhead' were a Metal/Punk, Punk/Metal or purely Metal band. In the end people decided that they couldn't care less and all types from the Punks (before they became extinct) and the hardcore metal-heads for a time celebrated one of the few bands who embraced both the styles so effortlessly. Lemmy's ultra-gruff voice is in full force here and hold's it's own with the mad-fast power guitar riffs and maniacal drumming that accompany for instance `Ace of Spaces' which is for my money the best Metal song bar-none. This is hard-metal, not the soft puffy crap that populated the 80's and with this album alone `Motorhead' are assured as one of the top 10 Metal bands of all time. This is their best album and to my mind the most adrenaline pumping kick in the face record maybe ever made. Clearly a band at the height of its powers, this is Motorhead's high-point and if you'd like to reacquaint yourself with some raw metal power mayhem this is the place to go. Anybody claiming to be a Metal fan who doesn't have this album well......just isn't a metal fan. This is essential.

Fast, Loud, Precise, Brutal, Motorhead.......2007-02-09

I consider No Sleep a mandatory counterpart to Ace. Both said albums are two of the greatest punk rock albums ever made. This is punk rock perfected. Before you say "Dude, this ain't punk rock" please hear me out.

What I love about this album is the contrast between its brutality and precision. It just rocks hard, and if you like Ace, then this album should be on the top of your wish list.

I happen to like the version of The Hammer, We are the Road Crew, and Ace of Spades better here than on the studio album. I also like the versions of Metropolis and Capricorn better here than their studio counterparts. They speed 'em up and make 'em more aggressive. The last song "Motorhead" is probably the best live punk song ever recorded.

This might be the most brutal Motorhead album of the classic years of 1979 -1986. You can see where Metallica's Kill 'em all came from when you listen to this. Except, Kill 'em all sounds like No Sleep's younger Brother. Most bands are not even remotely qualified to carry Motorhead's gear, let alone tour with them or imitate them. Kill 'em all is probably the best imitation. To be fair to Metallica, Kill 'em All was influenced by other NWOBHM bands too, besides Motorhead. Motorhead were the best band of that genre at that time. They perfected punk rock and invented speed metal on Ace and No Sleep.

These albums started a revolution in rock. They gave rock a boost by speeding it up and injecting it with raw brutal punk rock energy, but without the Imaturity of other hard punk bands like the Sex Pistols. This is hardcore punk rock for grown -ups and for people that can actually play their instruments and write songs. Well, it captures the spirit of punk anyway.

Motorhead does tend to defy labels. They are really not a metal or a punk band at the end of the day. They are a rock and roll band as Lemmy says. That is true. All I know is that this line -up rules on this album (No Sleep) and Ace. I am not a huge fan of Bomber, and I don't like Iron Fist at all. Bomber is way better than Iron Fist, in my opinion. But, Overkill, Ace, and No Sleep are favorites of mine. I would highly recommend Another Perfect Day and Orgasmatron too. Get these 5 albums, they are all amazing classics.

Classic Speed Metal .......2006-05-25

God, I love Motorhead. They are one of the best rock/metal bands of all time, and one of my favorite bands as well. Their 1981 classic live album "No Sleep 'Til Hammersmith" was the first Motorhead album that I ever bought, and I just freakin love it, it's so addicting just like every Motorhead album I've listened to. This album showcases the classic lineup of Kilmister/Clarke/Taylor performing their early classic songs from "Ace of Spades", to "Overkill", to "Bomber", and doing it all in true Motorhead fashion: Loud, Fast, Dirty, and IN YOUR FACE! The songs on here are more faster and more heavier live than on the studio albums. Lemmy Kilmister's vocals are totally awesome, and his bass just makes the floor shake. "Fast" Eddie Clarke's guitar riffs and solos just makes your hair spin and your head banging happily. "Philthy" Phil Taylor's drumming is more faster live as well. An eye-opening discovery.......2005-10-28

This I discovered back in the early 80's and they blew my socks off. They are not for all ears nor is Lemmy. This live album was my first of many. Motorhead has always been a hungry band and even to this day(2005(they remain hungry. That's the difference between a legend and a has been like the Hoax ......Hunger to continue no matter the cost.

One of a dozen or so essential metal albums.......2005-01-17

This ranks right up with "Master of Puppets", "Reign In Blood", "Master of Reality", "Number of the Beast", and "Rage Against the Machine" as the foundation for a truly great metal collection. This sort of plays like a greatest hits album for early Motorhead, except live! One of those rare albums I put on, and manage not to skip a single track. From "Ace of Spades" up till the monumental closer "Motorhead", this is a 500 MPH trip down the highway that doesn't let up for a single second. One of metal's finest.

No Sleep but extra Mott's.......2006-02-22

Now with all these extra tracks laid onto the CD, this is an absoloute must for all fans of hard drivin' rock, but it all started over thirty years ago, with a slight misunderstanding.
In 1975 Space rockers 'Hawkwind' made the nearly terminal mistake of firing their charismatic bass player Ian 'Lemmy' Kilmister in the middle of a North American tour. 'Hawkwind' brought in a replacement and still keep going to this day with original guitarist Dave Brock still at the controls.
Meanwhile Lemmy slunk back to England with his tail between his legs, which lasted about ten minutes and a bottle of his favorite Jack Daniels, before he decided to form his own band.
When asked what the new band would be like Lemmy replied "We will concentrate on very basic music, loud, fast, raucous, arrogant, paranoid, rock 'n' roll...... It will be so dirty that if we move in next door to you, your grass will burn". Not forgetting this was a full year before anybody like 'The Damned' or The Sex Pistols were even formed.
At first the name 'Bastard' was chosen, but after their first management pointed out it might not be that easy to get on 'Top Of The Pops' with that name 'Motorhead' was chosen. Which just happened to be the name of the last song that Lemmy wrote for 'Hawkwind'.
Lucas Fox was selected on drums, and ex Pink Fairy Larry Wallis selected himself on guitar. If Deep Purple the loudest band in the world, and played at ten, and Spinal Tap played at eleven. Motorhead were a definite twelve, and would still get fans like Trevor Masters and Mark Winslade down the front with their heads in the bass speakers screaming "Louder!"
The Melody Maker reviewed their first concert as "Avoiding any potentially confusing variation in tone and key ..... You won't enjoy this band until you have had a frontal lobotomy" No one gave them a remote chance of success / popularity / playing in tune.
Never the less United Artists signed them up and put them in the studio, during the recording of this album Lucus Fox was pushed off the drum seat by a chap by the name of Phil 'Philthy Animal' Taylor. When United Artists heard the results of the recordings they completely freaked, and shelved the whole project. (These recordings were later released four years later as 'On Parole' when the scene had changed somewhat and jolly good they are to).
The band starts gigging almost every night to keep body and soul together to an ever growing loyal, but going slightly deaf fan base.
The next major change was brought about by the band deciding they needed a second guitarist, so 'Fast' Eddie Clarke was brought in for an audition, the facts have never been made exactly clear, but when the session finished 'Fast' Eddie Clarke was the guitarist for Motorhead, and Larry Wallis went back to the 'Pink Fairies'. Motorhead carried on as a trio.
With such a large following packing out all their concerts somebody had to swallow the bullet and sign the band up on a recording contract. Bronze records got the band to sign on the doted line. The first release 'Motorhead' (1978) went top 50, a year later and after their first headlining tour, with an appearance on Top Of The Pops, their second album 'Overkill' (1979) reached the top thirty. In the same year they released 'Bomber' (1979) which went to the top half of the top twenty. The following year they released their trump card 'The Ace Of Spades' (1980) smashing it's way up to number four in the charts. The band were now huge, still totally unfashionable, but with an ever growing army of fans.
In 1981 they toured the world and it's neighboring planets, headlining everywhere they went and inspiring a whole new generation of Heavy metal hard rockin' bands. Recordings from the tour were put out as a live album 'No Sleep 'till Hammersmith'. It entered the charts at Number one, Motorhead's first number one and the first live album to enter the charts at number one.
It simply roars from start to finish. All the classics are there from the first four albums, starting at break neck speed with 'Ace Of Spades' and staying that way until the band finally thunder into 'Motorhead'. After you have listened to this album, you know why Lemmy dedicates the song 'The Hammer' to Philthy Animal, and why Eddie Clarke is called 'Fast' As for Lemmy his bombastic bass leads from the front and his graveled vocals leave you wondering if he can make it all the way to the end of the show. (Of course he does, as he has done now at over a thousand shows). Definitely one of the best Live rock albums ever put out. As it says in the Tahitian Queen "If It Is To Loud, You Are Too Old'.
After one more album 'Iron Fist' (1982) another top tenner. 'Fast' Eddie Clarke threw a wobbler and left, being replaced by firstly Brian Robertson of 'Thin Lizzy' fame then by two guitarists Phil Campbell and some bloke called Wurzel who also left leaving Phil Campbell in charge of all things six stringed. Philthy Animal left, then came back, and then left again to be permanently replaced by Mickey Dee. There have been another thirteen studio albums, plus numerous live albums, compilations, DVD's etc along with too many concerts to count. Lemmy is now in his seventh decade and his only signs of slowing down are a few more ice cubes in the Jack and Coke to help with the dehydration.
Motorhead are always good. 'Inferno' from 2004 is a class rock album, but always at the pinnacle for me will be their 1981 live album 'No Sleep 'till Hammersmith'.

What can you say about this double-cd from Motorhead. Amazing and the sound is so clean and loud. All the classics on it. "Overkill" sounds like there playing for there lives.
I had a hard time getting this cd new. Had to wait months to buy it, but it was worth the wait.
So if you love Motorhead or are just starting to listen, I encourage you to buy this cd.
This is an all-time classic live album.

Rip roaring classic speed metal from the loudest band.......2003-11-25

Simply put, this is the classic speed metal live album ever! The 3 man line up of Ian "Lemmy a fiver" Kilmister, "Fast Eddie" Clark & Phil"thy" "Animal" Taylor deliver the goods from the opening note. Motorhead rips through its set starting off with Ace of spades, played even faster than the studio version. Lemmy's gravelly voice & dirty bass sound never let down with Clark's riffs & Taylor's speedy drumming as they continue through "Stay clean", "metropolis", "the hammer", all the way thru to closing the set with a version of "Train kept a' rollin'" that'll have you headbanging forever! Buy this album.

Well if you or anyone of believe that bands like Korn, papa roach or limp bizkit are metal bands........YOU'RE WRONG....
Yes this guys are rock'n'roll.....they are ugly, bad and dirty, and that's what rock is about...
Lemmy & company delivers here a set of classics with an incredible fury, belive me, no other band make a guitar, a bass and a drum kit sound this aggresive. their music is LOUD! and fast.
If you want to know where did all the metal started you shouldn't miss this record, as well as his studio predecesor 'Ace Of Spades'......get it, you won't be sorry

Speed Metal At It's Best.......2001-04-08

This album is what Motorhead is all about. None of this wrestling theme song stuff. They let it rip. The first song, "Ace Of Spades," sets things off and the guys don't stop. This is the classic line-up and the classic sound that Motorhead brought to the stage. It is one LOUD album that all speed metal fanatics should not only hear but own. Don't let the imposters fool you. Bands like Metallica, Megadeath and the Misfits owe a great deal to this band. Motorhead kicked the door open for them.

Well, talking about Lemmy's band is somewhat embarassing : The guy behind the drums is much often in jain than, say, Flavor Flav (even in being white). The guitar man is...looking like any 70' ridiculous guitar hero, and lemmy tried once to cut his moustache (yeah, M-head are hard rock funny-bones) and looked like, er, an HP's Printers rep (even with THE spot). So, when I was a kid, I'd prefer wear Motorhead's skull t-shirts, than Lemmy's funny smile. Yeah, I was a kid. But, but, but...they are the fastest on the playground, the loudest (and I know what I mean, or what I listen to) sound, and ....Lemmy plays bass in chords (yeah, mates, that's the secret, try it on your garage)!!! This band is (in his category) a merge of all the most important things in rock (like Thorogood, or Hound Dog Taylor, in some ways). I was wondering if theirs fabulous studio albums would not help for a live album, but this album has an incredible power, speed, precision and...class. Thanks guys, merci Lemmy. Stunning.
