It's the easy way out to dwell on a group's supposed "maturation," but considering the members of Silverchair were 14 when they released their debut album and are a whopping 20 years old with this outing, it's entirely appropriate, not to mention accurate. From a band of any age, though, Neon Ballroom is a stunner of an album. And it's also leaps and bounds beyond the Australian trio's two previous efforts, good if derivative grunge/classic-rock fare interpreted by impressionable young musicians. From the epic, dramatic opening cut, "Emotion Sickness," to "Ana's Song (Open Fire)," Neon Ballroom is a 12-song collection rife with emotions laid bare and songs fully realized with lush strings and piano (courtesy of David Helfgott, the inspiration for the movie Shine.) Silverchair singer/songwriter Daniel Johns outdoes himself with the sonic diversity and fragility of his tunes, especially the ethereal, delicate ballads, with the powerful "Dearest Helpless" smacking of Kurt Cobain at his most beautifully tormented. From the gentle "Miss You Love" to the punky-aggro "Spawn Again" to the flat-out speedy rocker "Satin Sheets," Silverchair have created a haunting, edgy, seductive soundtrack to a young life deeply felt. --Katherine Turman

5 out of 5 stars Silverchair Continue Progression on NEON BALLROOM...4.5 stars..........2007-01-09

Back in 1995 when FROGSTOMP came out, Silverchair's three members were only 15 years old, but needless to say many were impressed with their skills at such an age. Their debut was a fierce blend of aggression and angst packaged neatly in nuggets of throttling guitar rock. FREAK SHOW still had its fair share of metallic grunge but also balanced it off with some varied textures. NEON BALLROOM continues their experiments with melody while sprinkling in some orchestration, keyboards, and lush arrangements to add depth to their sonic assault. While NEON BALLROOM does have its share of Kurt Cobain-esque moments, more often than not its a very impressive trip through all 12 tracks.

Take for instance the lush opening track "Emotion Sickness", which features piano great David Helfgott on keyboards. Here vocalist/guitarist Daniel Johns, bassist Chris Joannou, and drummer Ben Gillies showcase a completely sparse yet lavish six minutes of glossy but dramatic rock. It doesn't hurt that the song sounds like it could be many different suites, but there are moments during the song where Silverchair sound much older than their years. First single "Anthem For The Year 2000" is an arena-sized nugget of stadium metal that makes you want to stomp your feet more than not. It's the gentler moments that really surprise you, from the gentle, sweeping grandeur of "Miss You Love" to the silvery power ballad that is "Ana's Song (Open Fire)", which tells the tale of Daniel Johns battle with anorexia. But Silverchair still love to show that they can rock, such as the fierce and angry guitars that dominate the grindcore of "Spawn Again", which is a fiery slice of animal defense. "Satin Sheets" has punk attitude written all over it with the thrashing guitars and pounding drums. Again, so many texures to be found on BALLROOM. Other tracks like "Point of View" and "Black Tangled Heart" mix together the majestic and the monster.

Overall, Silverchair really display a sense of craft and majesty on NEON BALLROOM. Whether you like this side of Silverchair or not depends on your dedication to the changes a young band will go through. BALLROOM displays some real strength and progress, one that would come to full realization on DIORAMA.

P.S. Look for Silverchair's new album YOUNG MODERN due out April.

5 out of 5 stars amazing.......2006-05-24

For lack of any better words, this is an album you MUST HAVE. Besides the fact that these guys are amazing songwriters, they present it so well and fluid-like. Everything seems perfectly in place. Great lyrics too.

5 out of 5 stars Silverchair's best work..........2006-05-20

I am the proud owner of every Silverchair album and I have to say, this one is my favorite. Every song is amazing. Their incredible talent really shines through. I have always considered Daniel Johns a lyrical genius but I relate to his lyrics more so on this album than any other. If a song has the ability to send chills down my spine, it's a damn good song in my opinion. Well, this whole album gave me chills. "Steam will Rise" is my personal favorite. The ending when the music cuts out and all you hear is Daniel's voice...amazing. His voice is his own instrument. I definitley recommend this album. If you weren't a Silverchair fan before, you will be now.

5 out of 5 stars "A breeding ground for hate...".......2006-04-26

Silverchair's Neon Ballroom has to be the most personal and heartwrenching album of all time. Frontman Daniel Johns battle with anorexia is the main theme explored on this introspective disc. The track Open Fire (Ana's Song) John's talks openly and bluntly about having and coping with the diaease known as anorexia, "I love you to the bones, and Ana wrecks your life like an anorexia life." Miss you love is a gorgeous song with self-loathing lyrics:"I'm not,not too sure how it feels to handle everyday like the one who just passed in the crowds of all the people..." Do you feel the same, and Paint pastel Princess are about overcoming loneliness and staying clear of prescription pills. The best song on the album is Black Tangled Heart which John's declares:"Maybe you'll kill yourself before i get a turn, maybe i'll fall in love and never learn." Point of View and Anthem for the year 2000 are also standout tracks. John's voice is so strong and powerful, he is using all the strength he possibly has in his tiny body to get his words out. A stunning and therapeutic masterpiece, Neon Ballroom will have you begging for more.

5 out of 5 stars Great music that doesn't age!.......2006-01-21

I first purchased this CD back in 1999, and the music still seems as moving and emotional to me now as it did back then. You can't help but sing along with their interesting lyrics and different sound of music. It was an extra special CD to go along with my teen angst of middle/high school.

5 out of 5 stars 5 Stars all the Way.......2000-07-08

Neon Ballroom is the most emotional album I've ever listened to. Daniel Johns' crackly vibratto sends chills down your spine as he sings about his battles with paranoia, depression and anorexia and carefully handles each string of his sincerely screaching guitar. Chris Joannou gives "bass-player" a new meaning as his grungy strums take over the undertones. Ben Gillies complicates typical beats to fit the dramatic cry of the background orchestra. At age 20, the boys of Silverchair have given teenage angst a new meaning. Another reviewer commented, Silverchair's albums just keep getting better and it's true. Right now, they are working on a new album and, unfortunetly for them, it will be hard to compare to this brilliant masterpiece. I, like many other listeners, have gotten great satisfaction out of Neon Ballroom and I highly recommend it; to anyone!

5 out of 5 stars The best album!.......1999-09-09

I don't ahve much to say except this is the greatest album I have ever heard. Not being a Silverchair fan for a very long time, I heard "Ana's Song (Open Fire)" and fell in love with it. But if you think that the best stops there, you're wrong. The whole album consists of music that is so intense and deep it goes right into your soul. So, if you haven't picked it up yet, you'd better. It's worth the investment!

5 out of 5 stars Silverchair's new album is GREAT!!!.......1999-08-05

I am pretty sure that you've heard Ana's Son [Open Fire] and Anthem for the Year 2000. Well, they are two GREAT songs, but you need to buy the album, you don't know whats coming to you. There is a mixture of hard-core metal, rock, and some of the softer piano type stuff. If you liked Nirvana, you will LOVE this album.

5 out of 5 stars Silverchair has reached a whole new level with this CD.!!!!!.......1999-08-04

It's sill Silverchair but on a different level. They've gone past the original and went the extreme with piano and strings. I thought this gave them a more mature sound but didn't take away from what everybody already loved in there music. Every album just gets better. I highly recomend you pick up Neon Ballroom if you do not already own it.

      5 out of 5 stars new/old.......1999-07-15

'Anthem for the Year 2000' - perhaps - appeared to be your classic silverchair song;- Heavy guitare, and teenaged angst lyrics. It seems this time that Mr.Daniel Johns, has pretty much steered away from the rock road, and has embarked on a new stairway to heaven. Manic pianoe keys, lush beautiful strings and an angry sharp orchestra combines to make 'Neon Ballroom'. Imagine Led Zeppelin going symphonic orchestration with 'The Door' (an already complex song) times ten;- and there you have 'Emotion Sickness', the album opener which reveals a dark side to Daniel Johns. If he's expressed fears at coming across fey when he uses his falsetto, that's nothing compared to the high drama and import conveyed by this collection of sounds. David Helfgott (inspiration for the oscar winning film, 'Shine') makes an appearance, and gives a very rememberable performance. 'Ana's Song (Open Fire)' (my personal favourite) is the track that reveals Mr.Johns personal struggle with anorexia/malnutrition. It starts off with a very mellowdic symphany and then breaks out into heavy, moving guitare tunes with keyboardist, Jim Moginie adding a specail touch. Mr.Johns voice seems to be rather soft during the song, but towards the end appears nervous and shaken by singing such heart breaking lyrics(and your my obsession/i love you to the bones/and ana wrecks your life/like an anorexia life). Despite some sweet lines, 'Ana's Song (Open Fire)' is a very morbid and sad track, but there is certainly no lack of naivety. 'Spawn Again' let's us see the silverchair we all know (and love). "Discard the old/in with the new" whispers Daniel Johns before screaming, "Discard the old/In with the fashion." Here is silverchair at they're heaviest. The song lays out the blunt truth of animal cruelty, which Daniel Johns must be very passionate about. 'Spawn Again' kicks in with a burst of vitriolic rage. 'Miss You Love' is not something you would except to be a silverchair song. Despite its title, 'Miss You Love' is not a love song (says lead singer and guitarist Daniel Johns)Never fear, these aussi boys haven't gone all Bryan Adams on us, it is a very powerful ballad which conveys not being in love, not having love and not caring about it. 'Dearest Helpless' is based around a jagged killer of rock riff; 'Point of View' kicks in with a strong pop hook at its heart. 'Black Tangled Heart' is a beautiful mixture of hard rock and an classic orchestral; an odd combination but it works to create a strong yet sweet tune. 'Satin Sheets'; heavy 'Paint Pastel Princess'; more mellow track, very angelic. The album's final track, 'Steam Will Rise' sounds like your classic eighties rock tune. The aussi boys from Newcastle have definatley matured over the years, and 'Neon Ballroom' is without a doubt the best work they have ever done, and we know that Mr.Daniel Johns means every last work from the bottom of his black, tangled heart.

5 out of 5 stars silverchair is awesome!!.......2000-08-22

i heard of silverchair when they first came out but really didnt give them a chance. then 4 years later, i heard ana's song and was completely intrigued by daniel, chris, and ben's beautiful yet unique sound!! when i bought neon ballroom i could never pick a favourite, i just put my cd player on shuffle and sinked into deep blue. and neon ballroom isnt all, freakshow and frogstomp also rocked!! get them all and support animal liberation!! peace!!

      5 out of 5 stars question mostly.......2000-06-14

I think silverchair is the greatest band ever. and I love neon ballroom, but I was wondering why the track listing does not appear? It would be really helpful for me to decide and buy this cd I would like to know which are the extra tracks.

      5 out of 5 stars IT ROCKS!.......1999-12-18

I'm a brazilian fan that imported this CD and doesn't regret at all... It's the best CD ever! Who likes silverchair, or even those who like rock but doesn't know silverchair, I recomend it... IT ROCKS!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Album I have ever heard in my entire life!.......1999-12-13

If you're hesitant about buying this album, don't be. You will never regret it. Once I turn it on I can't turn it off. Daniel's voice and the emotion in his lyrics are so captivating, they hold you in a trance for the entire length of the album. This album has changed my life. The 6 minute long Emotion Sickness goes by so fast I still think time speeds up whenever I listen to it. The first single off the album, Anthem for the Year 2000 just makes you want to get up and scream along with him. Ana's Song, Black Tangled Heart, and Paint Pastel Princess are so expressive of what Daniel was feeling when he wrote them you can almost feel the pain in his voice. The hardest songs on the album are Spawn Again and Satin Sheets and are just that. Hard, with a mix of hardcore punk and metal. I definetly recomend this album to anyone who likes silverchair even a little bit. It is the best album I have ever heard in my entire life!
