Fans of Godsmack's dark, swirling, commanding music will be delighted by the Boston band's powerful third effort, which mixes arena rock in the vein of an Alice in Chains (in fact, Godsmack takes its name from an AIC song) with the aggression of Pantera. With new drummer Shannon Larkin (formerly of Amen), Godsmack stick with the riff-heavy, layered tunes and sharp, confident bridge-burning lyrics (witness the convincing vitriol of "I F@?king Hate You"). Highlights include Sully Erna's gut-spewing scream on "Changes," the memorable chorus and commanding assured "I Stand Alone," and the radio-ready "Straight out of Line." The tribal drums and chanting of the instrumental "The Awakening" sets the stage for "Serenity," the final track, which brings Faceless full circle, the acoustic guitars, congas and strings providing a sinuous conclusion to a potent album. --Katherine Turman

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best Godsmack CD........2007-05-31

Out of all their CDs that they currently have out I think this one is the winner. Their I stand alone song, Changes and Straight Out of Line all rock.

5 out of 5 stars Faceless.......2007-01-17

Most hardcore album ever made from Godsmack! WAY better than their first and second album combined, except 4 maybe the song "Serenity" It's ok,but I could have expected better, however still rocks!!!!!

best songs on their are dead and broken, straight out of line, i stand alone, i am, faceless, and changes.

5 out of 5 stars Godsmack's Third Album.......2006-07-28

With their third release, Godsmack really shines, harder and better than ever before. A strong, radio-ready hit opens the album with "Straight Out of Line". Godsmack continues the energy rise with the next two tracks, "Faceless", and "Changes". And perhaps the most powerful song they've ever recorded comes into play at #5, "I Stand Alone", in my opinion, one of the best heavy rock songs ever recorded. They continue the awesome song trend with "Re-Align", a softer side where the lyrics absolutely shine. Next, a throwback to their debut with "I F*****g Hate You", an angry song that bristles with tension and malice. Another stand-out is "I Am", in which lead singer Sully Erna declares "death will come when i'm good and God d**n ready". And Godsmack does it again with the melodic, almost tribal "Serenity", where the chanting chorus can make your heart pump with intensity. Overall, this is their best record yet and an excellent purchase. This album apppeals to all rock fans who love quality music. An awesome album.

5 out of 5 stars the energy is there.......2006-07-25

I had overlooked this band for along time. I am now a fan. I love the energy they bring to their music, the agression, the power...I really don't get the comparison to Alice N Chains. They are one their own sound. Sully does have a very unique voice and the lyrics are dark but man they are awesome. I bought IV first. Now I plan to get their other CD's as well. This is truely worth buying.
"I stand Alone", " Serenity" ,"Straight out of line" are really good.

4 out of 5 stars A good band to appreciate.......2006-06-28

godsmack is a great band with some classic songs such as Voodoo, and I stand alone, and serenity but anyways... this cd is full of what some people say out of tune guitars and dinosaur growling... thats godsmack for u, and if u cant handle it then dont bloody listen to it. This band is a great band to appreciate and i love the sound of them. Sully's Voice is awesome, so low and such i love it. The songs that shone on it are I Stand Alone, Faceless, Serenity, and others so whoever wants to diss them dont listen to it

5 out of 5 stars I NEED 4 MORE STARS!!!.......2007-07-20

This cd is absolutelly jaw-dropping at points. This band can only be described as technical, yet senseable, brutal, yet beautiful, unbelievably off-tempo, yet always in time. This band goes from in your face death metal, to pure sludgy grind, back to hard and heavy and then, out of seemingly nowhere, smashes your face with melody, and its not just thrown in there for the hell of it.

I am a melodic death/progressive metal freak myself, so I was skeptical when I heard about this "Technical death" band. Most bands who are "technical" are technically crap. They make music that makes no sense just for the sake of making no sense and seeming to be on the edge of a revolution. This band NEVER goes too far. They have a very diverse mix of melody, technicallity, and hard-edged death/grind metal style. The only band I listen to who even compares (who they are actually friends with, btw) is All Shall Perish, which are also on, imho, the REAL forefront of the melodic death revolution. Someone mentioned an influence in a review I believe, Death, and it is quiet clear that these guys took it upon themselves to take Chuck's work and bring it beyond even his wildest dreams. My only regret is that its only 8 songs. I eagerly await the next slab of molten death from these guys, cuz it will rule the earth \m/

P.S. I defy you to find me tighter drumming than what is done on any song on this album, drumming that perhaps makes the entire cd worth what it is.

5 out of 5 stars Impressive.......2007-02-24

Just happened to stumble upon The Faceless on myspace, heard 3 songs off the album, Pestilence, An Autopsy and The Ghost of a Stranger. I'm very please with the technical side, being that it isn't so technical that it becomes absurd, but there is enough to make you understand the capability of this band. The guitars are great, very precise riffing and pleasantly melodic solos. Dare I say they are in the same vain as Death, well you can hear influences anyway. As far as the bass player goes, lets just say that somewhere near the end of Ghost of a Stranger, he plays a bass riff that made my hairs on my arm stand up. Marco Pitruzzella does a great job on the drums with nice 64th note dbl bass, gravity blast beats, extremely fast fills. Great job guys, I can't wait to hear the rest of this album!

5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC.......2007-01-24

This cd dominates. A fantastic choice, great guitar work and unbelieveable blast beats filled with machine gun double bass. Great vocals too!

5 out of 5 stars Technical Death Metal.......2006-12-07

Well, I saw this CD at my local music mart and I was like, "Damn they actually have this here??" I bought it before I even knew it. The Faceless is a fairly recent addition to the Technical Death genre and they do it very well. When I heard this CD, it made me think of Beneath the Massacre. They sound a lot alike and they both are extrememly heavy. Beneath the Massacre is above the Faceless in terms of complexity and heaviness, but they are pretty well matched. But in terms of melody, if you could call it that, or would even consider calling it that, The Faceless takes the medal. Anyways, you should definitely buy this CD, you will not be dissappointed. 5 stars all the way!

5 out of 5 stars My Muscles Hurt.......2006-12-04

I can feel the acid building up in my arms. It feels as if I've been lifting weights for hours. I can barely move. So exausted...

This album is so heavy, it weighs at least 9 tons.

Not only does the brutal heavyness of this album build you muscle mass, it also defines them clearly with its intricacy. The riffs are classic and memorable, the vocals brooding and booming, and the drums... simply leave you incredulous.

I am willing to bet both my arms that this man is the best drummer in the tech-death genre. Wait. Cancle that. He is probably the best in any rock genre, from pop to grindcore. Simply awe inspiring.

This album is not only for tech-death fans, but really any musician with an open mind. Buy it and be amazed.

i have a little anecdote for you about this album,

i was at the music store with my mom, and i picked out this album because i liked metal at the time.my mom looked at the list of songs in the album, and she had a weird look on her face, and then i said "Uh-Oh, did you see the song 'i F*****' hate you'?" and then she gasped and said "IS THERE REALLY A SONG ON THERE THAT SAYS THAT!? I'M PUTTING THIS BACK!!!!!" so she did put it back and i said "oh, well..." and we ended up going to the bookstore

(that trip to the bookstore changed my life forever, but that's a different story)

1 out of 5 stars Don't buy this!.......2004-08-31

Even though I like this band, you shouldn't buy the clean version. If yoiu listen to the edited version of "I F****** Hate You", it just sucks. I own the one with the cuss words, and i'm happy I own that version.
Bottom line: DON'T EVER BUY THIS ABUM EDITED!!!!

1 out of 5 stars Why didn't they use this for torture?.......2004-03-31

Apparently nobody told Godsmack that new metal is in its dying gasp, which makes them only easier to hate, even new metal innovators Korn have moved on by now. The band is still steeped in riff heavy metal, in the same style as Metallica, Megadeth and Soundgarden, only the band has neither the musical ability or the intellectual stamina to keep up with any of those bands. Frontman Sully Erna, like Creed's Scott Stapp is better at baring his pecs then he is at commenting on society, he tries the same route as James Hetfield, and sometimes he sounds almost as heartfelt, but not nearly as intelligent, the fact is any fifth grader whose read a couple of Curious George books could probably make observations on the same level as Erna. The album has its moments, but these are rare and Erna still sounds like a bad Eddie Vedder parody. In any case the album is (id like to end this review with something completely unoriginal, fitting considering its a Godsmack album) boring.

5 out of 5 stars Love 'Em Or Hate 'Em...They're Baaack!.......2003-07-08

Depending on your point of view, Godsmack is ...one of the few(if not the only)real hard rock acts left. It's very rare to find a band so loved or villified with no middle ground. And while this album may only be preaching to the converted, it's one hell of a statement. The band moves away some from it's cookie cutter tendencies and ventures at times into almost Pantera-esque territory. It adds a definite punch to their already potent mix of Sully's growls against grinding guitar and pounding rhythms. As a hedge, the band included the hit "I Stand Alone," from The Scorpion King, but the rest of the songs have enough strength of their own. "Changes" one of the standout tracks, incorporates heavy grooves with even an acoustic passage thown in. Elsewhere, their white knuckle approach is very apparent on the spewing "I F***ing Hate You" and Sully's life chronical "Releasing The Demons." "Serenity" the album's acoustic closer recalls Jar Of Flies era AIC with its tribal drums and almost psychedelic feel. Now that Pantera's dead and Metallica's sold out, these guys are on top of the game and this album shows it.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest CD yet..........2003-04-24

I'm a rabid Godsmack fan. I have every single Godsmack CD. i pre-ordered Godsmack's "Faceless" and recieved it a day before it's official release. I put it as soon as I got and I wasn't dissapointed one bit. The CD is awsome. It's their best yet, and I can honestly say that I can't help but to listen to it everyday. "Serenity" is a beautiful song. I like all the songs, but my favorites are the ones I can really relate to such as "Re-Align", I F*cking Hate You", "Serenity", and "Straight Out Of Line". I recommend buying it.

5 out of 5 stars excellent!!!.......2005-05-08

This is a real thing. Great CD from UDO. It sounds like Accept but after Metal Heart period. It is full of melody, emotions and great lyric and overmore his voice. Everyone who is interested in European metal scene and especially into Accept influence should have this masterpiece!!!

1 out of 5 stars Pop drivel.......2005-01-13

I've been an Accept fan for 20 years. It was hard for me to make the jump to Udo's solo direction. To compare the two is of course unfair. I read a reviewer that gave this CD 5 stars. I bought it based on that review and can barely sit through the whole CD. Stating it was the best Accept/Udo Album ever should have been a dead givaway for me. Shame on me for overlooking that ridiculous statement. To me it is so pop oriented with the lyrics and especially the watered down pop metal sound of the band that it is a complete and utter let down for true hard rock fans. I suppose UDO was aiming for the very young female demographic money machine but as regards the guts and nuts of hard rock that can fulfill the expectations of what should be delivered by such an experienced performer, this falls flat on its face. I recommend Animal House if one needs a UDO fix. Animal house is not Accept but I find it worthy of keeping in my collection and actually enjoying it. Faceless World is on it's way to the used CD store where they will give me a dollar or two for it.

5 out of 5 stars This is the ultimate quintessence of 20 albums !.......2002-01-25

U.D.O / Faceless World.

- almost at least. F.W is undoubtedly Dirkschneiders best work to this day - and it surpasses everything Accept ( his old band ) has done under their history.
Why ? This album has a flow and so much awesome catchy loops that it paradoxly is hard to remember them all !!
Before I get attacked by any Accept-fans I have to modify that ; If You think that very basic - rawsounding, fast sing-along metal anthems without temposhifts is
the best things in life , then You probably should choose other albums from Dirkschneiders
repertoar over this one. However , if You are interested in shading development and
songs who contain variation , if You appreciate a somewhat slower ( which in
UDO:s case doesnt mean slow ) tempo so that melodies and separate instruments
can be accentuated more clearly - then this is the undisputed choice for You.

Songwriting is absolutely above all comparison - it's really hard to understand that
so much talent and inspiration could be concentrated to one album. And that's why
I dare to rate it better than the other UDO/Accept-CD:s ; while they have a couple
of great songs and the rest more average , this album is just pure masterpiece material
from start to finish.
Instrumentally it is top notch , I don't think I've heard so much feeling and precision in
guitarplaying on any other metal albums at all in this genre. As on previous album
(Mean Machine 1989 ) Matthias Dieth is the artist behind the guitar here - one
of Germanys most skilled metal guitar players. Here he is taking his frightening wizardry
to the absolute maximum. Udos singing is as genuine and emotional as ever - one has to admire the man , shouting his lungs out for that unmistakeable hissing.

After a few listenings one other thing became obvious ; the backing vocals are not just "hummed" a little in the background ( like on other albums ) - they are really
SUNG ( !! ) on Faceless World . . This is a important factor that helps bringing out the great catchiness and loop in the lead melodies.

One more techical marvel to be mentioned , production is stunningly good ( yes , this starts
to get a tiresome catalog of superlatives - but there is no other description possibly )
- remember that this was recorded 1990 ! Fresh as the spring and razorsharp sounding !
So , if You are the slightest into metal , do not walk by this - it might make a great change
in Your way of listening to music. I was completely swept away by this ( and I'm certainly
not a greenhorn in terms of metal ) , hopefully You can discover " Faceless World " in
the same fashion ! Usually I recommend one certain song to testlisten , this is not
really meaningful here ( although I like the title track very strongly ) - they are all tremendous !
Enjoy !

4 out of 5 stars Well done with a couple tiny flaws.......2004-12-21

The overall rendering of Godsmack's hard rock style to String Quartet was well done. Any true Godsmack fan need not bother reading any further into my review, Trust me you'll want this! Their are a couple flaws:

The solos are awesome, But I think they could have been a little faster and heavier.

The actual songs on the album(even though they are good)Well I think they should have went more random direction. Instead they focus mainly on more popular songs.

But thats basically it, But don't think this is a bad CD. All godsmack fans and even curious Classical string fans will like this one.

I myself listen to this album often.

Album Description

"A Denton band on the verge of great things ... the music rumbles like storm winds across the West Texas desert, with a heart that is Joe Tex plus T. Rex. All three sing, with Barton and Wickliffe carrying the bulk of the load, and the lyrics are full of rage and desire, joy and laughter. Wickliffe and Valdez syncopate rough but stylish leads and bass lines over Barton's urgent, danceable percussion (she steals riffs from James Brown)." -- DALLAS OBSERVER

The Faceless Werewolves are a rock `n' roll trio based in Austin. The band formed in 2001 in Denton, when the three members met while attending college. They moved to Austin in late 2005 to take advantage of its strong music scene. They played SXSW 2006 and, as a result, were invited to place a song on the Copper Label compilation to be released in Fall 2006. This CD, titled Medium Freaky, was recorded at the Bubble with Frenchie Smith. The band is planning a regional tour to coincide with the release of this CD in October 2006.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Muy excellent band and performers.......2007-05-12

I stumbled upon one of their shows and then bought the record when it came out. Very glad I did both things. Maybe a bit of a Stooges vibe on some of their stuff, but wouldn't say "influenced by" because who knows. They really pour themselves into their playing and performances. Certainly they don't miss not having a bass player. The record has a good thick sound, very tight. Get it if you're a fan of unbridled anti-mainstream rock done with no pretensions. They are wild and creative and deserve to be stars, which they are in my book. Go FW!

5 out of 5 stars This is a fantastic rockin' CD!.......2006-10-15

I was in Waterloo Records in Austin last week when a new CD came on over the store sound system. I assumed it was some new hot major label band, but after running to the cashier to ask what it was I found out it was "Medium Freaky." Last night I saw the Faceless Werewolves play at the Longbranch Inn--it was their CD release show. They are a three-piece with two guitars and a drummer. An INCREDIBLE woman drummer. The whole band was tight, tight, tight, and the women drummer was phenomenal to watch. And not only did she drum lights out, she sang great too--I high register, gruff, punk-but-tuneful female voice with a cool southern accent. Anyway, I highly recommend this CD. They seem to be referred to as "punk," but I'd call it hard driving garage pop. Similarities to, but not derivative of, the White Stripes, but instrumentally share things in common with Cotton Mather and Tommy Keene. Can't wait to see them again and to follow them as the grow up.

    Album Description

AS HOPE DIES have thrived since the release of their debut EP, Birth Place and Burial Site. Their newest offering, Legions Bow To A Faceless God, is a nine track towering trip through total devastation. More focused and mature than ever before, this album is a sincere outpouring of total emotion. It begs for total attention from willing and focused ears, and unlike its contemporaries, its bludgeoning song writing and crushing hooks are mind numbing. Beyond a shadow of a doubt, AS HOPE DIES' debut fulllength from UNDECIDED RECORDS is aruly awe-inspiring masterpiece.

2 out of 5 stars Legions Bow To a Faceless God.......2006-11-27

As Hope Dies stumbles into the ground w/ this release. Personally, I'd never heard of the band before I'd seen them here. After reading the reviews, I decided to give them a shot. Good production, good artwork, decent lyrics, but no originality musicwise. To me, they sound like a knockoff of Darkest Hour or As I Lay Dying, which in fact, play this genre of music w/ more originality. The lack of deviation in songwriting formula is what buries this CD in mediocrity. If that is what you're looking for in your music, you'll definitely find it here.

If you like hardcore, thrash or just fast stuff, welcome to your new favorite band. The band has been through some break ups but here they are with this. All the musicians are incrediable and peice together music better than i have ever heard before. Good rifts, drum beats, and good melodies at the right spot and it doesnt kill the hardcore style. Cant foret if you like screamers this vocalist is the vocalistis the best that has ever lived. Very powerful voice and very deep lyrics.Changes his style of screaming when least expected. This is by far the most powerful band i have ever heard. They have no bad songs at all. They are my favorite band. They have another ep out but good luck finding i got mine from there drummer.

ok first of all the name of the band is 'As Hope Dies' not Hope Dies its even on their labels website. http://www.undecidedrecords.com/bands/ahd.php I've listened to these guys since their debut EP entitled 'Birthplace & Burial Site' they got back together and followed their EP up with another masterpiece. 'Legions Bow...' is beyond description they said they wanted more melody which they accomplished but did not sacrifice their brutal tones in any way if anything this cd is heavier then their debut. This cd is so powerfully driven by these musicians it is unstoppable it may not be the longest cd but it is an epic in its own right. The level of intensity this album brings is insane the music is beautifully raw giving it a true personal feel.

Highlights include Sully Erna's gut-spewing scream on "Changes," the memorable chorus and commanding assured "I Stand Alone," and the radio-ready "Straight out of Line." The tribal drums and chanting of the instrumental "The Awakening" sets the stage for "Serenity," the final track, which brings Faceless full circle, the acoustic guitars, congas and strings providing a sinuous conclusion to a potent alb! um. --Katherine Turman

I've been hooked on Godsmack ever since I heard their first album. Each one has a slightly different sound to it but all of them sustain quality all the way through - no "album fillers." This long awaited album is no exception, full of great guitar riffs, sexy unique vocals and skilled drum work. I was worried that 'Smack may have lost their edge since the loss of their drummer Tommy but Shannon has possibly even improved their sound. Awesome. A must have for any Godsmack, or infact decent music, fan.

I WON'T GO TO MUCH INTO THE ALBUM,BUT ALL I HAVE TO SAY IS IT IS AWESOME HARD ROCK,WITH GREAT RIFFS AND GREAT VOCALS.IF YOU LIKED THE FIRST TWO CD'S,YOU WILL LOVE THIS ONE.THEY GET BETTER WITH EACH ONE.I WOULD LOVE TO SEE GODSMACK AND DISTURBED TOUR TOGETHER.IN MY OPINION THEY ARE THE BEST HARD ROCK GROUPS OUT THERE NOW.(BUT LET'S NOT FORGET ABOUT METALLICA,NEW ALBUM DUE IN JUNE).
