This is not background noise--it's too naturally beautiful to ignore. So it's great for meditation or sleeping babies (or individual yoga, but not group classes).

Better options available.......2007-06-04

Dean Shostak's album of classical music for glass harmonica is marred by pervasive amateurishness. Shostak's skill on the instrument is adequate, but the musicians who accompany him have serious problems with intonation. Sound quality is less pristine than one would hope or expect, and the CD's running time is a bit short for such a steep price. The DVD features several brief video pieces on the glass harmonica, most notably Shostak's appearance on one of the final episodes of "Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood." You can do better.

Glass Armonica CD/DVD Set by Dean Shostak .......2006-11-12

I was greatly privileged to hear Dean Shostak perform in his home town of Williamsburg, Virginia at the Kimball Theatre in 2004. I immediately bought two of his CDs and used "Revelations" in the teaching of my music appreciation/performance classes. This year I was very pleased to add the showing of Dean's DVD, since the classrooms are up-dating with DVD-player availability. Of the eight glass armonica players performing in the world today, Dean is the only one who performs with the original fly-wheel (the foot pedal which propels the armonica)as it was designed by its founder, Benjamin Franklin. I consider Dean THE expert on the armonica, and also have appreciated the web sites of Cecelia Brauer and William Zeitler.

Amazing to hear Original Music.......2006-03-06

I was very confused by the 2 reviews which were very negative. I attended a concert by Dean, where I purchased this set. His love of the GLASS ARMONICA comes across in the music. WE have all heard the pieces, and now enjoy hearing how the composers intended them to sound on a glass armonica. The DVD has the making of the instrument, as well as his visit to MR.ROGER'S NEIGHBORHOOD. It is extremely well performed, and the selections are varied by the different composers.
You will not be disappointed with this set!

Really bad!.......2006-01-27

Bad and amaturish renditions of some great music mostly due to the poor Armonica playing. I am a glass artist just learning about glass music. If this was the only recording I had gotten it would have been my last. However, I also got the Bruno Hoffmann CD "Music for Glass Harmonica" with much the same music on it. Very good. I will be much more ceareful what additional glass music I buy and will stay far away from Dean Shostak's work.

Album Description

Formed in 1992 and based in Wilmington, North Carolina, Coastline has become one of the most active bands in the region, consistently performing over 300 shows a year and earning numerous Carolina Music Awards, including Band of the Year and Album of the Year.

Coastline consists of founding member and four-time Carolina Music Association Entertainer of the Year Jim Quick on vocals, keyboards and harmonica; Robbie Hegler on bass and vocals; Sam Bryant on drums; Casey Meyer on guitar, Steven Thorne on tenor sax and acoustic guitar; and Glen Tippett on alto sax and keyboards.

The music on Sweet 'N' Ripe is an energetic mix of R&B, blues, soul and rock and roll, with slices of jazz and country. The album includes exciting covers of Allen Toussaint-penned classics, "Tears Tears & More Tears" and "Play Something Sweet," Hank Ballard's "Sweet Mama Do Right," Jimmy Reed's "I'm Nervous," Roy Brown's "Love Don't Love Nobody" and Joe Tex's "I've Got to Do a Little Bit Better," as well as eight originals that showcase Coastline's talents as dynamic Southern storytellers.

Simply Happy Music.......2005-10-03

The Coastline Band is classified as "beach" music in their home state of North Carolina. While there are East coast beach elements in the music, there are also influences from other styles, like soul, Motown, blues, funk, jazz, country, gospel, rock, and more. All of these do not mix together to sound like mush, rather, they make a great clean sound that I can only describe as "happy" music. You cannot help but tap your toes along to these tunes! I played the CD for my 16 year old nephew and my 74 year old father, and both found songs they liked. Excellent musicians, great lead vocals and crystal clear harmonies make this entire disc shine. You can tell these guys love what they do and are not afraid to have a laugh in the studio. Check out "Sweet Mama Do Right" for an example of pure entertainment (and for a tight rhythm section!). If everyone listened to this music, the world would be a better place!

This album is rockin' and danceable throughout. Great song selections, strong lead singing from Jim Quick, and catchy guitar and horn arrangements that will keep your toes tapping. For shaggers, it's definitive...for everyone else, it's a guaranteed musical bargain.

You may have heard Dean Shostak playing the glass armonica in Colonial Willimsburg, or on All Things Considered on NPR. If not, this recording gives you a chance to hear Christmas carols very eerily and beautifully played on this old American instrument.

"The glass armonica was invented by Benjamin Franklin in 1761. It consists of glass bowls tuned by size, mounted one inside each other with cork on a metal spindle. The glasses are made to spin with a flywheel attached to a foot treadle. Moistened fingers rub the exposed rims of the glasses to produce"...some very unique and beautiful sounds.

According to Dean Shostak's web page, he added the flywheel to the instrument to make it even more playable.
