A fun mix.......2007-06-22
Sad to see how the swing craze has died off, it produced some really great stuff.
This album is a nice mix of several more obscure swing bands, and the songs are a good range of styles and material. If you enjoy swing, this CD should be satisfying. I bought it on a whim and have enjoyed it. Some highlights to watch out for: "Ruby Mae" by Indigo Swing, where the talented musicians from that now-defunct band create the musical sound of riding the rails on a cross-country train, and "Tossin' and Turnin'" by the Cigar Store Indians, a rockabilly romp reminiscent of Brian Setzer when he was still with the Stray Cats.
Indigo Swing's stuff is still available too, and is great. Their latter two albums, "All Aboard" and "Red Light!" are well worth a listen--or several. Enjoy :)

Eddie still rocks.......2007-07-10
As an avid Eddie Money fan, it was a great pleasure to hear him re-make some of my favorite older songs. The songs that he chose on this CD are all gems. To see him and his daughter live on stage performing some of these tunes will give you chills - it did me. I see him in concert every chance I get.

Out of the Money.......2007-04-08
Having been a big Eddie Money fan since his debut in 1977, I was excited to see him come out with a collection of re-makes from the 60's. On paper, I didn't think anyone could be a better choice for the great list of songs that he chose to cover. The bad news is, this CD sounds like outtakes from American Idol. His voice is detached, weak, and buried in the mix. I kept expecting the thin sound to open up, but it doesn't. To sum it up, great songs, poor execution.
Good effort... but..........2007-03-22
Lacking in something.
Being a big Eddie Money fan I waited anxiously for this CD and finally got it. And then I played and listened to it.. twice, just to be sure.
The good points are... Great song choices, couldn't get much better than this selection for a rock revival. Great musicians and music. Decent sound, although I think a little tweaking would have worked here.
The bad point, for me, was Eddie's voice. I know it's not going to be as good as it was... and boy was it good! But for some reason it just doesn't work here.
'Land of A Thousand Dances' seems to be the standout here.. his voice, the music and background all seem to meld perfectly. On all the other tracks his voice seems to be 'seperate' from the music and background. Almost as if they were recorded seperately and then just layered and nothing else done.
I was a bit disappointed but still happy to know that Mr Money is still in the game. I think with better production this could have been a more polished gem and I do hope he gives it another shot in that direction. For having one of the stronger voices in rock, I think the man deserves better than this.

billy bob sings the blues.......2007-03-20
first of all i have to say i love this album, billy bob amazed me with the choice of musicians to work on this with him. although i find it more comical than musically stimulating. the music under this album is great its definately somewhere between george jones and pink floyd. the lyrics could have been thought out alittle more as well as the vocal deleivery but all in all its a great peice to listen to definately not for everyone but if you like weird country music made by the dude from slingblade then you're good to go. if you dont then buy it anyway the trippiness factor of this album makes it worth buying and listening to atleast once so youc an say to your friends i own a record by billy bob thornton
Not his best album, but still great for what it is........2006-12-08
Seeing as how "Edge of the World" is one of my all time favorite albums, I'm just a tad late at getting around to writing something about "Hobo". "Private Radio" met and exceeded my expectations over five years ago and then "Edge of the World" came out in '03 and sort of became a soundtrack to my life. What an amazing album that was. There was so much variety, such an abundance of great songs and completely original ideas. And it all came together to tell a great story as well. Stunning.
"Edge of the World" was SO good in fact, that it raised my standards to an almost impossible level, leaving "Hobo" with some pretty big shoes to fill. Did it meet my expectations? Well, yes and no.
It's a very good album. Let me just say that. Every track here is great in it's own unique way. It's a great album to sit back and relax with and take in every note and every word. It's a big relaxation album more me and I really love the vocals this time out as well. If you heard him sing "The Wind" from the Warren Zevon tribute, "Enjoy Every Sandwhich" album, then you can get an idea. Very low and whispery in places. Nothing wrong with that at all. The cover of "The Late Great Golden State" is a keeper for sure and makes the album worth owning as well as "I used to Be a Lion". "Orange County Suicide" is something a little bit different and it works. In fact, the only track here that doesn't do anything for me is "Smooth Me Over", but I never end up skipping it. I cherish the new version of "Your Blue Shadow" and "At Least We Dreamed" is incredible. Unlike anything he's ever done.
I'm singing all this praise so you're probably (or probably not) wondering why I'm giving this puppy 4 stars instead of 5. Well, here's my gripe (albeit a minor one): A little more variety wouldn't have hurt things. "Grey Walls" is an awesome track and a little more of that wouldn't have hurt anything, but being as it is, "Hobo" is an excellent effort and seems to have gotten him more critical acclaim and appreciation for his music.
Well, there ya have it. Even though it's not the masterpiece that "Edge of the World" was, it's still great in it's own right. It's been well over a year since its release and I'm still steadily listening. Thanks again Billy Bob and I'll be anxiously awaiting the next one.
I'm a Hobo Too.......2006-02-28
As with his previous albums BBT is once again in fine form. I just can't get enough and I am already waiting for the next one. I do have to say that this is not his best album, but he still blows away all other musicians. If you are looking to buy your first BBT album, I would recomened Priviate Radio first. But like I said, BBT is Awsome.
Categorically Defying Categorization . . . .......2006-02-24
This album, like BBT's previous two, defies categorization - none of his albums sound anything like each other - or like anything else out there for that matter. All of the songs on Hobo are written or co-written by BBT - the lyrics are personal, spare and achingly perfect. His vocals for much of the album are presented in hushed tones; there is a quiet intensity about them - kinda like when you're sitting in a crowded room and trying to carry on a private conversation with someone next to you. His storytelling abilities translate flawlessly from what you see and hear if you watch him as an actor to what you hear and imagine while listening to these songs. Admittedly, Hobo is not, for the most part, a happy-go-lucky, sing-along-at-the-top-of-your-voice kind of album; it's more like a just-be-quiet-and-listen deal. The lyrics tell about his experiences while living in California for the past 20 years, but anyone who's struggled with keeping body and soul together in a strange place should be able relate to the stories in here. My favorites are Orange County Suicide and El Centro on $5 a Day, but really all of the cuts on here are tremendous. If you've never had the pleasure of hearing him sing, you might want to take a listen to a few clips either here at Amazon or on his website at www.billybobmusic.com. Mr. Thornton's style is about as different from main stream as you can get; to quote Willie Nelson (when asked about Kris Kristofferson's vocals) "He ain't no Sinatra", however there is only Sinatra, and likewise there is only on BBT and I like his vocals just the way they are thank you very much.
An impressive, thought-provoking concept album.......2006-02-10
Billy Bob Thornton: hillbilly turned actor turned director turned hillbilly rocker...a unique ride. Few people can boast (or would want to boast) the experiences Thornton has been through. However, if you want to hear his frustrations, his insecurities, his pet peeves, and, yes, his heart, you just have to pick up a copy of HOBO and give it a listen.
This album is an ode to California and Los Angeles, and the varied cast of characters that inhabits them. From the destitute homeless in the title track, through the beautiful attention-grabbing young women in "Orange County Suicide," to the sleaze of "Purple Passion," to the whistful dreamers in "El Centro On Five Dollars a Day," to the has-beens in "Late Great Golden State"...Californians either get the shaft or an applause. Surprisingly, Thornton never judges his eclectic cast (except possibly in the case of the ironic sarcasm of "Orange County Suicide," and even then, Thornton remains ambiguous); he leaves the judgment up to the characters themselves.
And you, of course, the listener. Thornton's HOBO follows on the bootheels of THE EDGE OF THE WORLD, a modern alternative country record, and PRIVATE RADIO, an old-fashioned alternative country record (which Marty Stuart produced, and on which this album's "Your Blue Shadow" originally appeared). Though not as intimate as his first record, and not quite as country as his second, Thornton's third album finds him in tip-top writing and singing shape. His voice is rough and rigid enough to get the messages across; these songs do not need a crooner, they need someone who's been there, who's seen the underside of life and has lived to tell the tale. Billy Bob Thornton is that man. When you listen to HOBO, you are listening to Thornton's troubled heart. Dark, disturbing, or ironically amusing...like Thornton's previous albums, HOBO has it all.

Another great trip down the MFU memory lane.......2005-10-19
Volume 2 (comprised of 2 CDs) is another first rate compilation of the series' original music and not to be missed by U.N.C.L.E. fans. The liner notes are wonderful and add a lot to ones appreciation of the music.
My only problem is that THE CDs ARE COPY PROTECTED! Considerable work is needed to get the music onto your iPod, if you really want the music in your mp3 collection. This is a major hassle and a surprise, since the first set in the series was not copy protected.
The best of the three Double CDs ORIGINAL soundtrack release.......2005-07-12
Many of us have always thought The Man From UNCLE had the best music for a TV series ever, and this three double CD release confirms this. Wow! I'd be just happy with one CD, but having SIX (three double CDs packages) is absolutely out of this world, I mean, a lifetime wait come true.
Indeed, this is an unbelievable collection of three double CDs packages with the complete series soundtrack, and I mean the complete music, not a tune is missing.
And this is the ORIGINAL Man From Uncle music. Let me stress the point: this is the four years ORIGINAL soundtrack with the original recordings as they were heard throughout the series, not a no-name orchestra doing personal versions of the stuff. The audio transfer is very, very good, the music from late episodes is even in stereo.
Each individual CD carries over 70 minutes of music. All in all there you have the four TV seasons main titles and all, absolutely all of TMFU unforgetable music.
This is not a chronological release, meaning, all CDs have a mix of music from all four TV seasons. Volume 1 is heavier on early TV seasons stuff, fans of Jerry Goldsmith will love it. Those of us who prefer what Gerald Fried and later Richard Shores did with TMFU music, then volume 2 is mandatory. If you are a fan, you can't miss any of these six CDs. However if buying all three double packages is too much for you, you must go with Volume 2, no questions asked. Volume three is the weakest of them as it brings "suites" and a whole CD with "The Girl From Uncle" soundtrack, but you have a bonus "Open Channel D" beeper.
Each package is gorgeous, each with a glossy color booklet with extensive liner notes with details on how each tune was written to a specific TV series episode and how it was used onwards. You have bios on the composers, on how the recordings were made, even an overview on how many instruments were available in each of the years the music was recorded.
So, throw away your Hugo Montenegro Man From Uncle CD, this is the REAL thing.

This is actually a great cover album.......2004-08-13
There is a mistake of some kind going on here. The cover displayed is for the group's great first album, titled simply Wondermints. Wonderful World of the Wondermints is the group's follow-up album, which consists entirely of cover versions. Either way, both albums are brilliant, and I strongly advise you to disregard that previous, completely puzzling review.
The first album consists entirely of originals, and is one of the most solid power pop albums I've ever heard. The sond dissed previously, Carnival of Souls, is actually the closer, not the opener, and is in fact a super-catchy rocker. The rest uses the likes of the Beach Boys, Beatles, Elvis Costello, Left Banke and Velvet Underground as influences, yet still comes up sounding fresh. If you're a fan of any of these artists, you will love this album. I give it *****.
The second album is almost as good in its way. Cover albums are usually not a good idea, but this is a great example of how to do them well. The group makes interesting song choices, and brings them fresh life. Heck, they even have the audacity to cover one of their own songs. The opener, the Monkees' Porpoise Song, is a surprise stunner. Other artists whose songs get a novel approach include everyone from Brian Wilson to Paul Revere, Burt Bacharach, Pink Floyd, ABBA, the Turtles, along with some more obscure but fascinating choices. This album is great fun and full of quality. It stands up well to repeated listenings. Good luck finding these albums now, but if you do, you won't be sorry!
YA SHOULDA BOUGHT IT WHEN IT WAS ON BIG DEAL.......2000-09-09
See that...now it's only available as an import, now that Big Deal Records (NY, USA) is out of business...and you're kicking yourself for not buying it earlier...it's probably worth the hefty import price if you're a completist...but I say pick up "Wonderful World of" and "Bali" first...sure, "Proto-Pretty" shoulda been a huge hit, in a better world...but let's face it, musically, it ain't a better world when suburban white kids are listening to rap music instead of pure, sun-drenched pop...
The DNA is pretty . . ........1999-11-30
Proto-Pretty is fantastic & terrific, its excellence is almost scientific. The song gives its soul to you. It sounds like songs you have heard before, but you can't place what they are. It's a pocket symphony. The rest of the record is pretty good, as well -- especially Carnival of Souls. So good to see you, nice to see you, hope you're doing well . . .
This CD is azure blue crystalline pop magic........1999-08-15
The Wondermints self-titled debut album is one of my all-time favorites. The lyrics pull at the imagination without leaving one feeling juvenile or dirty. The music is pure magic. If you are not too self-involved and/or if you like the the Trash Can Sintras, you will love this album.

Best Blues CD of 2005........2006-05-17
If there was a better blues CD in 2005, I certainly didn't hear it . . . and I heard a lot of them. This is what blues records USED to sound like. A rock-solid band performing deep, gritty, real-deal blues. It's the kind of CD that would fit comfortably next to top-shelf releases by Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Elmore James and Jimmy Reed. Essential listening.

Album Description
The unusual name of and the unorthodox stage show of Killer Dwarfs won them a passionate fan base. When this album was first released in 1988, their hard rock sound was favorably compared to that of Dokken. This is a disc filled with crunching Heavy Metal hooks and raw vocals on tracks such as Tell Me Please and We Stand Alone. Six bonus tracks are included. 16 tracks.
Customer Reviews:
Awesome 80's metal.......2004-09-06
This is a great record. These guys can rock and the music is well written and well played. This is a fun record. Tell me please, Desperados, and Startin' to shine are the highlights but there is not a bad song to be found. I found this to be the antidote to BonJovi, Winger, Poison and other fluff. In my humble opinion., these guys were up ther with Dokken, Crue, Ratt, bands that had some talent and balls. A shame this record didn't sell a few million, it's that good. Buy this gem, you'll thank me. Give er', dunk!! rock on....
Can you beleive this is nostalgia?.......2001-02-27
I was a junior in high school when I bought my first copy of this. Back then cassette tape was the big thing, and CD was only for the rich. MTV HeadBanger's Ball was the hottest show in TV, and long hair teased way up was a "fashion do".
For quite some time, Killer Dwarfs stuff was nearly impossible to find. But now someone in the record business has done something right. This, the 3rd album from the Dwarfs, is undoubtably their best.
It was the success of their independent album "Stand Tall", what an ironic name for an album recorded by a bunch of guys going by the name Dwarf, that allowed this record to be made. "Stand Tall" is still an unavailable, but hopefully it will soon be rereleased.
Hard rock it is, but with a pop twist. Good writing is what raises this album over many of the one hit wonders of the time. Even if most of the tunes on this one didn't get mega air time, all the songs are catchy.
Listen to the samples, if you've gotten this far, you probably were looking for Killer Dwarfs anyway....
Great straight ahead rock.......2001-01-22
Made in USA in 2000, Serial# COL-CD-6451, Playing Time: 70 min.
"Big Deal", their 3rd album, was originally released in 1988 and was named after the fact the band finally signed a contract with a major record label (a big deal!).
This re-mastered version also includes as a bonus the first 6 of 12 tracks that would appear on their 5th album, "Method To The Madness"; 5 more show up on the re-mastered version of "Dirty Weapons".
"Big Deal" finally allow the band to make a better produced album, with commercial polish and catchy songs. Their style reminds me a bit of RATT, early MOTLEY CRUE, and FIREHOUSE, with no keyboard textures. It contains the small hit "We Stand Alone".
Grab this one if you like good rock, good singing, without getting into the "metal" genre.

Back with more of the quirk pop familiar to their fans, Shonen Knife's new album is a familiar blend of regurgitated Ramones riffs, assorted sunny jangles and three-part voices saying silly things in squeaky Japanese accents. There are wrinkles here that the band has been adding over their last several albums, like the early '80s' new wave that opens the album ("Shonen Knife Planet"), and the rare appearance of a song that actually goes past four minutes ("His Pet"). The loopiness remains intact for these intrepid ladies from the Far East, and only you can decide if you're up to the challenge of joining in. --Matthew Cooke

(oh-so-slightly) Endearing and (pseudo-exploitative ) Cute.......2006-07-15
2 1/2
These once "in the hip" Japanese female goofy rockers have not aged so well, as I am sure they did not even sound all that well when they first emerged and became all the rage for a brief time. Perhaps the sad lack of cultural connection to different music forced "open minded" music listeners to dig this, but the overtly exploitive and gimmicky nature of these tunes, not to mention their dumbrock songwriting style, would have any hardened musical cynic laugh at the mere premise. Still, some of these foolish little odes to the little things in life carry enough kinetic weight and vocal intuition to remain slightly endearing, switching from it's extreme light-heartedness into (rarely accomplished but often attempted) unabashed child stomping glee
This does not rock!.......2005-04-02
If you want to rock with Japanese girls then get Ex Girl. If you want to feel as though you are listening to the oldies station on you Satelite Radio, then this is for you.
Very Fun Rock and Roll.......2004-10-24
Anyone who is doubtful that three Japanese women could rock as hard as ZZ Top, the Police, the Jam or [name another male rock trio] might have one fear - that they might get really, really good. This collection dispels both doubt and fear with 14 incredible diverse and melodic tunes, both hard rockers & slower tunes. From the opening anthem "Konnichiwa" to the psychedelic "Jackalope" to the great, grungy cover of "Daydream Believer" this CD is both my favorite SK CD & one of my fave all time. Other favorites:
- "Fish Eyes" - The words are absolutely hilarious, about waking up and finding out she has "fish eyes" for no apparent reason. The harmonies on the "what do I see" part just melt in your mouth. Proof of what a tight, polished act they've become.
- "Banana Chips" - One of the many "food songs" on the album. Great melody! I crack up at the line "and just a little bit sweet" every time.
- "Cookie Day" - Here's the song that hooked me. I can just imagine a chick sitting in her flat watching TV and then deciding to go eat cookies. Then her musing about sending the post card with a buffalo on it and the way she pronounces "North Dakota" - that just put me over the top laughing. Great crunchy guitar, too.
If you've ever listened to there old stuff like "712" you'll hear how far they've come. (I can barely listen to some of that old stuff; although they always had the creativity I think they didn't have the cohesiveness back then.) The only song I'm not crazy about it "His Pet". But then it's probably as good as "Godzilla" by Blue Oyster Cult or Sabbath's "Iron Man" and at least as funny. Buy this CD!
It's Tasty History!.......2003-04-10
The Best Knife Yet?
I like it. Better I think than Rock Animals. On par (and better production) than Let's Knife. "Gyoza" is easily my all-time favorite Knife tune (ouch, that was hard to declare - I feel like I am betraying "Riding On The Rocket"). "Jackalope" is quintessential Knife - quirky, almost laughable - a song about a Jackalope postcard sent from Texas - I laugh at the thought of the twisted mind of the person who sent Shonen Knife a jackalope postcard). And finally, "Daydream Believer" is the perfect cover for them.
The rest are fun, but those three are the stand-out tracks. Enjoy.
makes me hungry..lol.......2002-01-22

Still Wild.......2007-06-20
By the time Lacy Younger began writing songs on the piano at age five, she already had two years of musical experience behind her. "I started taking requests at age three. My Grandma, Goldie would come grab me out of bed, stand me on the coffee table in my footie pajamas and insist I belt out `Somewhere Over The Rainbow' for a house full of martini clad party guests," she said.
According to Younger, music was always in her house because of her mother's beautiful voice and frequent use of the piano. On the way home from the beach one day when she was 15, Younger met some guys who wanted her to sing for their band. The rest was history; she began playing in local clubs about a year later.
Her debut album, Still Wild, includes thirteen tracks which deal with broken hearts and life lessons. Since she knows everyone experiences a rocky road when it comes to love, her wish is to inspire others. "If sharing my music encourages others in any way, I'm a happy girl," she said on her website.
All but two songs were written by Younger herself. The title track was written by Bonnie Hayes and "Here's To You" was created by Dennis Robbins, Dave Loggins and John Scott Sherrill.
While I had the title track "Still Wild," playing on my stereo, my fifteen year old brother walked into my room. He looked at me for a minute and said "this song is crazed." Thinking about what he said, I listened closely and realized that Younger's vocals go from soft and calm to "crazed" within just a few seconds.
That minute one realizes their relationship has gone downhill is a moment that nobody wants to experience, but we all do because that's life. "This Ain't the First Time," is about a girl who knows she's about to be left alone, but because; "this ain't the first time for someone to leave; won't be the last time my little heart bleeds...it's alright."
"Here's To You" is written with the idea in mind that she will meet the man of her dreams some day. She doesn't ever want to tell anyone she loves them unless it's the right person. Referring to her future love interest, she says "I know mine's out there somewhere, I just don't know where he is."
Yet another song about relationship endings comes with great lyrics and I like the idea behind it. "But I Miss You," one of my favorites, will definitely grab your attention with its strong vocals and percussion. Younger's passion will persuade you that she means every word. After being in a relationship for so long it is hard to get out of it when it goes wrong. She recognizes the comfort of a familiar relationship when she misses him but not the things he did.
To go along with "But I Miss You," "Livin' On Memories" gives the message that half of her wants to forget about him, but the other part desires to see him again. Everything about the melody of the song is convincing; starting with the tempo. It really gives that sad, daydreaming impression.
"Didn't I" leaves Younger wondering what she did wrong, trying to figure out why the relationship didn't work out. The ending explodes with emotion just before "This Time" comes to a screeching halt for a short time. As with most of her songs, Younger's voice becomes loud for a moment to make her feelings known just before she calms down again.
Overall I believe Younger has the right idea about music. She knows none of our lives are the same, yet we still have similar experiences in our every day lives, especially with love. "We've all been there," she says, "I just write about it."

A Little Bit Country A Little Bit Rock n' Roll.......2007-04-17
Lacy's sounds resides in that unique area that resides in between country and rock n'roll, that is indefinable by our current day music genre categorization. Her bleeding heart lyrics scream country but the husky soulfulness of her voice gives you the feeling that she is fronting a heart thumping rock band in a tiny dingy club. The stands out songs are "But I Miss You," and "Broken Heart, Broken Bones" where Lacy completely unleashed her bluesy voice. Overall the album is the perfect mixture of catchy rock tunes with a touch of that down home feel, which makes it accessible to just about everyone.

One of the greatest power pop releases of the nineties!.......1999-11-12
Splitsville is simply the greatest power pop band ever to come out of Baltimore. This is the finest release to date by these three incredible musicians ( and people ). Splitsville simply cannot be compared to other bands in their genre because they are so far above them in talent. "Misfits" and "The Kids Who Kill For Sugar" are my favorite tracks. Buy it, you won't be sorry.
Splitsville is the best pop band I've ever heard.......1999-09-29
I saw Splitsville a year ago in a tiny, dingy club. I was playing Ms. Pac-man, and I walked away from my game because I was hearing the greatest pop music I'd ever heard. I sat down, and didn't take my eyes off of them for their entire set. I immediately bought Ultrasound the next day. Do yourself a favor and buy this CD! You'll never hear a better, more perfect pop song than "Yearbook." If you like bands like Fountains of Wayne, Ivy, and The Lemonheads, you will adore Splitsville. The album if chock full of perfection.
Infectious & clever, full of pop hooks!.......1998-07-12
Splitsville's highly underrated 2nd album is chock full of lich melodies, amazing harmonies and songs you'll never be able to get out of your head. More polished and stylized than SPLITSVILLE USA, ULTRASOUND is sharp with witty lyrics.
