the best metal album of 2003 and i strongly stand by that statement.......2007-07-26
hello metallians, well im a huge fan of true metal, meaning power metal and anything from symphonic and progressive all the way to thrash and speed, rage standout to me right up in the ranks with running wild, grave digger, king diamond, iron savior, primal fear and so on. after 20 plus years of making albums, peavy wagner is possibly the best songwriter in the metal realm, not many bands can say that they have released over 15 albums and not one of them was not good, every rage cd is killer and this cd is no exception. every song on this album could be a single and that is no exaggeration. it is hard to find an album that every song is fun to sing along with, i love to sing along with this album, every song is very catchy in its own way and viktor smolski has created some of the best riffs and solos for this album that i have ever heard. his sound is so heavy and un matched, these riffs will literally knock you on your A,,
absolutely the freshest and most inventive guitar solos i have heard in years. mike terrana also helps make this the best album of 2003 with his un matched drumming, watch the concert video on the killer rage dvd from the cradle to the stage and watch his drum solo in the middle, i have never seen any one do the things he can do on a drum kit, it is like drumming gymnastics or something, absolutely amazing and i know of no other person who can drum like mike( jorg michael is pretty dang good also) any way this has become one of my top 5 listened to albums of my 1500 plus all metal cd collection. i can not take this cd out of my player because it is addictive. this cd truly deserved to be voted the best album of its year if not the best album of the millinium. if you like your power metal full of hooks and catchy as hell then look no further. peavy you are a metal god. also here are a few other albums that like this cd are great all the way through and never get boring.
silent force's worlds apart. wolf's evil star. kamelot's black halo.
freternia's nightmare story. iron savior's battering ram. primal fear's black sun. mercyful fate's in the shadows. and vision divine's self titled debut album to name a few. but few can match the power of rage and trust me, your grand pa's tackel box does not have near as many hooks in it as this album does. your friend in metal, brandon whitson, 25 of north carolina
Great Album, Great Band with a long history.......2006-09-03
It's not very often that a 40-something metalhead like me gets to discover a great new band that has a back catalogue which spans two decades. Somehow, miraculously, Rage avoided my radar until recently, and I'm glad it did. It's been quite a pleasant surprise these past several months as I've acquired five Rage albums (Trapped!, Missing Link, VIII, Unity and Soundchaser) and the 20th Anniversary DVD.
What a kick in the arse it is, hearing such an old-school thrash/power/proggish blend that tickles my eardrums to orgasm like this. Add in a cool symphonic/orchestral period in the late 90s and Rage is singing what I want to hear; heavy metal diversity and creativity, carried throughout the long haul of their career.
Overall, Rage is probably best described as a blend of thrash and power metal, with progressive tendencies. These guys aren't afraid of experimenting (including being one of the first metal bands to cohesively play with an orchestra for a whole album in 1998) without straying too far off the beaten path of what defines Rage. The band is rather speedy for the most part, but not in a repetitive way. The powerhouse tempos and beats of the drummer are constantly changing within the upper mid-tempo to middle speed-metal range. The music is very well written, super heavy, yet melodic and saturated in catchy riffs, guitar solos and vocal melodies.
The singing is most people's complaint about Rage (the few that have complaints), as founder Peavy Wagner tends to be too rough around the edges for fans of the higher-pitched "clean" singing, and not rough enough for fans of extreme vocals. But the vox fit the music perfectly because Rage's style could be described the same way; it's halfway between melodic and extreme.
Vocal camparisons make me think of Rolf, the singer for Running Wild, and to a lesser extent Udo of Accept. But I prefer Peavy's vox because he has a very pleasant "mellow" voice for the more melodic and acoustical side of Rage. Although Peavy sounds nothing like Jon Oliva of Savatage, his vocals compliment the music in the same way.
Soundchaser (2003) was the album that introduced me to Rage, and it has already earned a gold pedastal in my Hallowed Hall of Fame. These songs stick in my head for days, and for that I'm very thankful. You should be too.
If you're an old school metal/thrash/power metal fan, don't miss this album. Soundchaser is a true work of art, a masterpiece of music.
Recommended for fans of: Savatage, Running Wild, Accept, Iced Earth, Sabaton, Cage

This is what good musicians do. They love the music they play and they show it. It also helps when they can play their respective instruments like these guys can and when they can do it all as one. These guys are artists in the real meaning of the word. This is metal that you simply can not ignore. So don't. Get this CD and if you are a real metal head I can assure you that this will be a food source for your metal hunger for days.
One of the top ten of 2003.......2004-05-04
Rage's "Peavy" Wagner is the most underrated songwriter in metal today. This one man has gone through so many different styles of metal over the years that it's become very difficult to define exactly what kind of band Rage is. However, you can be certain that whenever you pick up a Rage album, it will be GOOD! Soundchaser, Peavy's latest offering, continues where "Unity" and "Welcome to the Other Side" left off, combining Mike Terrana and Victor Smolski's Progressive Metal styles of playing with Peavy's mixture of Thrash, Power, and True Metal. The newest result is the best of this era of Rage, "Soundchaser" is a rock opera with serious attitude and technical power. The title character has been the band's mascot ever since their famous third album "Perfect Man", now, we finally get to hear his story told through intense riffing, incredible drums, and lyrics that not only impress the ear but are quite fun to sing along with. Soundchaser is a must buy for any Metal fan.
Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2004-03-03
Now this is good music. There is not a single song hear that is even close to being poor. It's fast, powerful, melodic, catchy as hell and in my opinion is the best album of 2003.
Victor Smolski is completely amazing on guitar, Peavey Wagner is a genius songwriter with a very melodic, unique voice and Mike Terrana is a powerful drummer.
I can't speak highly enough of this album. For what it is, it's almost perfect, and what is it? I guess you'd call it a cross between power metal and thrash. It's a bit thrashier than their privious album, Unity, and about on par with it as far as quality is concerned and that's a good thing because Unity was awesome.
Just buy it.

Very Underrated.......2004-08-03
I would have to agree with the other reviewers in saying that Rage is a very underrated band. Soundchaser is my first purchase from them, but I can guaruantee you that it wont be my last. The chorus' in the songs are very catchy, the solos are great, everything about their songs are top notch. If you are a fan of heavy metal, do yourself a favor and pick this disc up.
One of the Greatest Albums Ever!.......2004-06-22
This is, without a doubt, Rage's best album to date. It combines the sound produced from Welcome to the Other Side and Unity, making the best yet. Rage is great live. They are REALLY underrated. They need more recognition, because they are truly great. One of my favorite bands. I met Rage at Prog Power USA 4, and, by far, their act was the best. But what killed me is that half the people left and then, not much of the crowd was into it. Three very talented performers and nice guys. This album is without a bad song, even the bonus track is good. I SERIOUSLY recommend them to anyone who loves metal.
what metal should sound like.......2004-04-20
this is my first Rage cd, a mellower cd for my standards but none the less this cd rocks, i've listened to this cd to many times to count since the day i bought it, back when it was released, anyway music don't get much better then this, all the songs on this cd rock there are NO bad songs on the cd at all i usually put it in and hit randomize and sit back a relax, go buy it and listen to what great music sounds like and then spread the word.
Yet another excellent Rage album.......2003-10-16
Two albums ago, as a long time Rage fan, I began to wonder if one of my favorite bands was moving away from the dark, moody, melodic thrash I loved. The addition of Victor Smolski and Mike Terrana for departed members injected some tremendous talent at the time but also a more hard rocking/power metal feel and I wasn't sure if that was a good thing. Still, lead man Peavey Wagner's songwriting remained stellar and both Welcome To The Other Side and Unity were still great albums. On Soundchaser though, the small complaints are gone and the doubts have been laid to waste! This a truly amazing agressive and melodic metal album. This is the best Rage album in years if not ever. That's a tremendous statement for a band without a bad album in 20 years! It's right on par with their classics Perfect Man, Trapped, The Missing Link and Black in Mind. So, if you liked Rage in the past you'll love this, if you aren't familiar with them now's the time to pick one up. Soundchaser rules and is my pick for album of the year 2003. Recommended to anyone into Power,Prog, or Heavy metal.
