Customer Reviews:
Only two good songs.......2007-05-07
The only songs I can stand listening to on this album are Rooney's amazing "Death on Two Legs" and Sum 41's surprisingly good "Killer Queen."
Joss Stone's "Under Pressure" makes me sick.
Not too shabby!.......2007-01-27
Hardly the best Queen tribute album out there but some songs are worth listening... I might even dare to say that, in some cases, I enjoyed the cover versions more than the originals. Anyway, here's my 2 cents:
ONE STAR
We are the Champions, Under pressure
To me, the worst songs on the album. The whole soulish innuendos didn't do it to me. The chorus on 'Champions' is supposed to be inspiring, a tour de force if you will. Instead we get a poor, sluggish delivery and that just destroyed the whole vibe. As for, under pressure I skip it everytime it comes up; simply annoying.
TWO STARS
Sleeping on the sidewalk, Stone cold crazy
Didn't care too much for both these songs. Although the vibe on 'Sleeping' is entertaining at best, the song as a whole feels weak. 'Stone' should've been a no-brainer but instead these guys deliver a sluggish and boring version; the stripped the vibe of the original song!
THREE STARS
B.R. by Constantine, Good old fashioned lover boy
Watered down versions of the original songs and too much on the copy-paste side. They sould've taken more chances but it seems that they're lacking in the creativity department. Enjoyable at best.
FOUR STARS
Killer Queen: I was expecting a punk version or a major bomb but instead we get a reigned-in Sum 41. I liked the vibe and my only objection would be that the lack of pre-bends on the guitar solo.
'39: I liked this version better than the original and I think the production was right on the money. A nostalgic song with good vocal arrangements.
Play the game: Nice tune with some tweaks here and there. Didn't depart too much from the original. I liked the guitar-strummed parts at different parts of the song.
Death on two legs: These guys managed to capture the vibe of the original, cleaned it up and added a bit here and there for good measure. A cool song with the right delivery and attitude. Good work!
Tie your mother: A no-brainer vibe-wise and one of the most enjoyable songs of the album.
Crazy little thing called love: Ever wonder what this song would sound if The Cars covered it? Well, this song is not the best answer but there's a definite Cars vibe to it. It starts out slow but then picks up the pace. Thumbs up!
FIVE STARS
B.R. by Flaming Lips: Wow! I really liked the whole Strawberry-fields- forever-kinda-vibe and the arrangements as a whole. Makes the other coer version pale in comparison as far as arrangement and creativity goes. Amazing work!
Fat Bottomed girls: Excellent version! Arguably the best song on the whole album. These girls deliver a cheeky version with some folk vibes and take the song all the way home!
Who wants to live forever: This is a great example on how a cover should be done. These guys adapted the song to suit their style and a result we have a honest, bold and inspired tune. Excellent rendition!
UNDECIDED
Bycicle race: Hmmm... I don't know what to make of this one! It's either a bold, gutsy gem or a bomb. Quite a departure from the original and either the lyrics inspired them to play the cover this unkempt way or they were listening to a lot of Sonic Youth. Listen and decide!
Pretty decent cover record. I would give 5 stars if no Constantine........2006-11-07
Constantine's version of Bohemian Rhapsody is way too "paint-by-numbers" and dare I say weaker than the original. Just like most of the American Idol covers on TV. The Flaming Lips version is not for the faint of heart. The track could be on any of their albums from the mid-eighties to 1995. It's the Lips doing what they always do.
Joss Stone's cover of Under Pressure on one hand sounds great. On the other hand, the problem in my opinion is her vocals. She doesn't sing the lyrics with the urgency that Freddie did. She glosses right over the lyrics.
Murderous cover versions.......2006-06-17
If ANYONE can cover a Queen song with the spirit of Freddie Mercury remaining intact, I say more power to them. Having said that, every copy of this absolutely excruciating album should be fired into the sun.
To dignify it with any more extensive kind of review would mean having to subject myself to Jason Mraz's "Limp-Wristed Lover Boy" and Joss Stone's HORRIBLE attempt of "Under Pressure" one more time, and I won't do it.
Lighten up! The artists here are not trying to be Queen Tribute bands,.........2006-06-15
By now everyone knows what a tribute band is: Beatlemania, 1964 a tribute to the Beatles, ...I even saw that there is a touring Alice in Chains tribute band. Tribute bands seek to exactly duplicate the original band. Any original band with any originality is going to take some liberty with the material, interpret it differently, maybe update it, and hopefully pass it on and interest a new audience to this great music. The true tribute of this album is hearing the influence of Queen on a new generation of artists. There's only 1 exception. Joss Stone is a fantastic vocalist but her track came across as self-indulgent- way too much R&B vocal riffing.
Having said that, the stand out tracks are Tie Your Mother Down by Shinedown and Fat Bottomed Girls by Antigone Rising. Having covered these songs myself in smoky, hole-in-the- wall bars, I appreciated the fact that the guitarists from Antigone Rising identified Brian May's riffs as "country/rockabilly" in origin. The rest of the band follows suit in putting a refreshing southern spin on this rollicking rocker. This track alone is reason enough to buy this album.

WOW.......2005-11-18
I know that WOW is kind of a small word but this CD ROCKS! I have loved queen for years. I originally bought this CD for my 10 year old son who took up the violin this year and who loves queen as much as I do but it quickly became mine. I've heard some pretty bad imitations, remakes, and ripoffs. I can honestly say that this CD is none of the above. You get 10 of Queens best. 1) Killer Queen, 2) Bohemian Rhapsody, 3) We Are The Champions, 4) We WIll Rock You, which happens to be my favorite on this disk, 5)Fat Bottomed Girls, 6)Crazy Little Thing Called Love, 7) Somebody To Love, 8) Play The Game, 9) You're My Bext Friend, 10) Another One Bites The Dust. The only downside to this disk is that they left out about a hundred other songs. I sincerely hope that The String Quartet comes out with a volume 2, but why stop there. They could go on forever with just Queen Classics.
Do yourself a favor. If you like Queen and Classical Music BUY THIS CD. You won't be sorry.
YES!!!!.......2005-06-05
Two words: Bohemian Rahpsody.
THey could have released a CD with only this song and I would have bought/borrowed/stolen it to get it. This song is definitely a highlight, but don't stop there, since the rest of the CD will make you want to play it over and over again.
If you've been thinking about buying a String Quartet Tribute, but don't know which to buy, I would buy this one, without a doubt.

What a great Collection!.......2006-05-18
I hold these songs off of this cd close to my heart. This cd is a great price for as many great tracks that are on here. Phyllis is one of my all time favorite female vocalists. I recommend anyone who is a fan of Jamican rocksteady to get it! Not one bad song on here.
This is the best thing that will ever happen to you..........2005-08-12
If you like classic soul music. Phyllis Dillon being addressed as the "Queen of Jamaican R&B" is very easily justified within the tracks on this CD. Every single one of them is a stand out- Jamaican influence is there, but with even a greater soul influence. When I first heard it, I went and dusted off some old Northern Soul albums afterward. The arrangments are great, the set of pipes on Phyllis are amazing...and I doubt this CD will ever leave my player.
Stand outs are "Make Me Yours" (this is better then Bettye Swann's version), "Nice Time" (which made the Trojan Rocksteady box set) and "Don't Touch me Tomato"...but her covers of classics like "Midnight Confession" and "Love the One Your With" are also outstanding. I can't say enough about this one- If you like Northern Soul or old Motown...and you like the sounds of the island, this is going to knock you out. Just buy the darn thing already...oh yeah, and skip "Eddie O Baby"- really the only turd in the whole thing.

Customer Reviews:
Awesome voice, exquisite performances.......2006-08-27
These two CDs contain a great selection of classical, operatic and folk songs in English, German and Italian by the famous contralto (1912 - 1953). Highlights on the first CD include What Is Life from Orfeo et Euridice, Art Thou Troubled from Rodelina, Woe Unto Them and O Rest In The Lord from Elijah and the traditional song Blow The Wind Southerly.
My personal favorites appear on the second CD. The first is the divine Drink To Me Only With Thine Eyes, the Ben Jonson poem, which is a most mystical and transcending listening experience. The buoyant Stuttering Lovers is most catchy and appealing. Both of the aforementioned are sung to the piano accompaniment of pianist Phyllis Spurr.
Backed by the London Philharmonic, Ferrier renders splendid versions of Father Of Heaven from Judas Maccabaeus and O Thou That Tellest Good Tidings To Zion from The Messiah. These are truly awesome, the first one slow and somber, the second joyous and triumphant. Other highlights on this second CD include He Was Despised from The Messiah and All Is Fulfilled from St John Passion by Bach.
The informative CD booklet contains black and white photographs, a short biography in English, French and German, plus complete information on the recording of the tracks: composers, dates, venues, conductors and musicians. Kathleen Ferrier was a unique vocalist who made a magnficent contribution to classical and folk music.
It may take you a little time to love her voice.......2004-08-19
Kathleen Ferrier has one of the most instantly recognizable voices in music. And it's a voice that might take you time to love. As an eight year old I heard her version of Blow the Wind Southerly many times on British radio and intensely disliked it. I wasn't sure if it was a man or a woman, adult or child, such is the nature of her contralto. But over the years, especially hearing Ferrier sing Handel and Mahler, I've come to treasure her recordings alongside Callas, Sutherland, Flagstad and Baker. This two disc set contains performances which are about 45-55 years old. Many favourites are here especially the folk songs and selections from Bach, Handel and Mahler. The sound quality is excellent. The sleeve notes mention that Ferrier's vocal delivery may sound old fashioned to our ears. But her remarkable voice which stirs one's deepest emotions, transcends any thought of quaintness or mannerism. She is, quite simply, the greatest contralto ever. This selection will have you seeking out her other recordings on Amazon.com. And it might also lead you to Virginia Rodrigues, a Brazilian contralto with a superb voice who, like Ferrier, makes everything she sings, her own.

Ted Nugent & Lemmy!.......2005-08-22
Buy it because the world's best rock stars are on it: Ted Nugent & Lemmy. Disagree? You're stupid.
Rockin'.......2003-05-20
An interesting compilation here, and surprisingly one of the only tribute albums to date about the legendary 'Queen'
The record itself is a compilation of Queen tracks (mostly B-sides it has to be said - not that that makes them bad of course!) by various induviduals rather than a specific band. Many of the artists are playing evidently here for the first time together and some times it comes off and sometimes it does not. One thing to state before even thinking of this CD, is that it is NOT a Queen CD - not stating the obvious here, but dont expect to here songs in the style of Queen, this is more the songs in the style of the respective artist... and again, this sometimes works, and sometimes doesn't.
Firstly the good - by far the best track on the album is the final one - a version of 'Its Late' by what effectivley is the band Anthrax, this is a really, really superb track and is severley kick [...] in every way - dare i even say it, but it may even be better than the original....certainly much more heavier. Also very notable is Lemmy (from Motorhead) singing again a hard metal version of 'Tie your Mother Down' - really good here to here a classic metal singer in Lemmy belt out a Queen classic in his own unique style.
As far as the bad side goes, there are no particularly 'bad' performances from any artists but more just a feeling of anti climax on songs that could have been done much better - such as 'Another One Bites the Dust' which all in all was a bit of a let down. It also really frustrated me that in the actual track listing for the CD it does not detail the actuall origin of the artist, rather just there unrecognisable name, but upon research you find this compilation has tracks performed by members of The Doors, Kiss, Whitesnake, The Who, Megadeath and Black Sabbath.
But despite this name list I wont lie to you - the odd hairspray band sneaks into this album and some performances sound like they real 80's tracks and in honest a bit cringworthy..... but the big name list mentioned above more than makes up for this.
Over all this album is good, and I would recomend it to any Queen fan, but would suggest it is purchased by fans who like there music nosiey and loud and in general this album is for metal fans rather than the housewives and trainspotters who know the words to Bohemian Rhapsody (incedently NOT featured on this album).
For those who love Queen, and like there music kick [...], buy this album!!
If you miss Queen..........2003-04-23
...this isn't a bad tribute. I bought this because there are some recognisable musicians here who have done their best to sing and play Queen. Ain't nothing wrong with that. Great songs are great songs even if these guys don't sound like Freddy. I didn't buy it expecting they would. What captures the Queen spirit though is Lemmy's version of Tie Your Mother Down. Most people don't get it, but Lemmy personifies the song. And Ted Nugent blazes on the guitar. Here's to Queen anyways....
Awesome.......2002-03-22
Listen to Jeff Scott Soto's Save Me!! Freddie who?
Wonderful Queen Tribute...if you take it for exactly that!!.......2001-08-07
I see these stuck up snobbish fans denounce any tribute to Queen stating that it is no where as good as the original. Well duh! If you want the original buy the original! Of course no one is better than Queen, or even as good, at doing their own songs. But take a tribute for what it is: A Tribute! These people love Queen, they acknowledge that Queen is an incredible inspiration and they wish to show their love and admiration by covering a song, or making a cover CD. I like hearing different interpretations of Queen songs. How would other people have done it? This CD is amazing in my eyes. Hearing the different styles mixed together. Not just different bands, but different members of various bands coming together to pay homage to the most wonderful band, Queen. I give it a 4 though for two reasons. Lemmy should not sing in the first place, let alone attempt a QUeen song. His gutteral moanings of Tie Your Mother Down makes a person cringe. No matter the song, Lemmy should be mute! And then there is Yngwie Malmsteen...His is not an homage or tribute, but just another chance to try to emphasize that he is a god of guitar...in his own mind anyway. To me a cover song should at least still be recognizable, but when Yngwie does his solo on his song he twists it into something that is not QUeen at all. Otherwise, my most favorable impression of the album is James LaBrie of Dream theatre. A truely remarkable singer in his own right, highly influenced by Queen himself. This album is worth getting, just keep in mind that it is a tribute, and it is not Queen. :)

Boring............2006-11-12
With all this talent, this album could/should have been a lot better.
"Stone Cold Crazy" and "Play the Game" are just too close to the originals, only the originals were better. "Fat Bottom Girls" isn't bad, but I think Antigone Rising do a better version. "somebody to Love" one of my personal favs, is laughable. And speaking of laughable, why am I listening to the Nelson Bros.sing "Crazy Little Thing Called Love?"
"Fight from the Inside" is the only song that really kicks it right. A very good version here w/ Tonys Levin and Thompson as a rythym section. Jason Scheff singing "Your'e My Best Friend" is awesome too. It's like he wrote tthe song. Kuddos!! "I'm in love with my Car" is no big deal and Glen Hughes' "Killer Queen" is back to laughable.
"Spread your Wings" and "We Will Rock You" almost end on a good note but all in all the album falls way short. Too bad too, because there's some really great players on this project.
All-star line-up but Queen still Rocks!!.......2006-01-25
This disc has a very impressive line-up of great musicians including some of the greatest session players of all time (Steve Lukather, Tony Franklin, Tony Levin) but unfortunately it doesn't stack up against the original Queen recordings at all. In fact no one really gets anywhere near to nailing their track. You might find this disc interesting if you want to hear how some of your favourite musicians tackle some Queen classics but don't expect too much. Queen recordings are just too good to be compared to any other versions, no matter how talented the line-up.
Well, it's better than "Dragon Attack".......2001-10-10
After dealing with various Queen tribute albums, one becomes rather weary when a new CD is released. Afterall, how many... Queen covers can a fan bear? Luckily "Stone Cold Queen" is an honest surprise. The album starts off with several dreary tracks. "Stone Cold Crazy" is no longer the frantic, thrashing metal song it was. Robin Zander's vocals are so out of place here as they're somewhat wimpy. The song is extended for no apparent reason other than to give Steve Stevens a freehand to widdle about on his guitar."Play the Game" is a poor sound-a-like to the original. Nothing remarkable about it."Fat Bottomed Girls" is straight from the wastebasket. Disappointing weak drumming from Brian May's former bandmate Eric Singer which is up to speed with the lifeless harmonies and arrangement.Perhaps the song I looked forward to the most was "Somebody To Love" as sung by Geoff Tate. I generally like Geoff's voice but here it just reminds you how poorly he compares to Freddie Mercury. Again the harmonizing is another huge let down however it makes you appreciate Queen's skills that much more.Rounding out the poor first half of the album is "Crazy Little Thing Called Love". Sung by the Nelson brothers (yes, the guys with the long, pretty blond hair) lacks all of the fun and flair of the original. The snappy bassline which was so danceable in the original is mixed so low in the cover that it's barely noticable.A ripping "Fight From the Inside" finds the perfect vocalist in Jack Blades. The roughness of his voice matches well with the pointed lyrics. The guitar work of Jake E. Lee is sharp and vicious. A good start to the album's second half.Kip Winger is an easily forgettable icon of the 80's but on "I'm In Love With My Car" he is resurrected as he glides along Roger Taylor's lyrics. The riffs from Steve Lukather's guitar soars. Roger should be happy with these two versions of his songs. An unfortunate cover of "Killer Queen" sees Glenn Hughes doing his best impression of what a drag queen sounds like singing. His whispered vocals are laughably bad.Jack Russell and the Kulick boys decided (thankfully) to do the fast version of "We Will Rock You" which roars through your speakers. Fast, fun and rocking.I'll skip past "You're My Best Friend" since I cannot stand the song, period. Finally, the best cover is "Spread Your Wings" which brings about a certain sadness from the song, the likes of which I have not felt since hearing Queen's version on the "Live Killers" album. Tommy Shaw somehow tackles the feelings with quiet desperation, slowly painting a mental picture of a man who dreams of something more. The Beatles-like ending is a nice, warm touch.Though there are several awful covers here, the few top tracks truly save the CD and when it comes to tribute albums, that's saying a lot.

Full of heart, soul and passion.......2002-07-29
The prelude will have you hooked and by the time your reach Innuendo you will feel the real passion of this recording. David Palmer has taken some of the most beloved melodies of the 70's and 80's and his passion for music to create this wonderful recording.
It will invoke feeling in anyone who takes the time to listen.
Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy!!!
Not bad.......2000-11-23
When I first heard of this album I thought, "Not another orchestral Queen album!" but this was a surprise. David Palmer arranged these tracks in a fresh way. Also included are tracks never done by a full orchestra ("Innuendo".)Setting it apart are the "Prelude", "Interlude" and "Postlude"...looking at the track listing makes you think you are reading the night's set list from a full orchestra's performance. The album sleeve is also refreshing and artistic. At least they didn't use the "Queen Crest"....AGAIN!Some Queen songs translate nicely like "Love of My Life" but rock songs such as "Now I'm Here" strain for credibilty. An OK album but the best of the Queen/orchestral releases.
Cheap, Good and Solid.......2000-05-26
...Queen's classic. While remaining tuneful to the original, the big orchestra sound and fresh arrangements added ambience and excitement to the music. Check out the jazzy "Death on two legs" and the vibrations of "Killer Queen" (with interlude of Bohemian Rhapsody). Awesome.
Its Solid coz its recorded with Sony SBM 20bit technology for audiophiles who are particular about sound quality.
This is a treat for all Queen fans and anyone who wants to relax with over 50mins of great music.
great CD.......1999-09-05
