Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars perfect score for a perfect movie.......2007-02-19

Carol Reed's veteran cinematographer Robert Krasker's quirky angles under Reed's direction perfectly framed the ready-made-for-an-art designer bombed out shadows and stark, isolated street lights of post-war Vienna and its underworld. Unique to cinema history the whole score (but for some canned incidental cafe music) was just the brilliant zither playing of Anton Karas, adding his nuances to every dramatic transition. Krasker won an Oscar, and Karas was nominated.

The "Third Man Theme" (also known as the "Harry Lime Theme") is alternately brittle, jaunty, bittersweet, romantic, wry, and even sardonic piece of music--which fits the mood of the story and the film perfectly -- that, once heard, can't be forgotten.

The "Third Man Theme" turned Anton Karas into a wealthy man after 28 years of toiling in obscurity an relative poverty in Vienna.

One night, Carol Reed was passing by a wine tavern where growers offer their own wines for sale directly, and heard Anton Karas's playing in the background. Reed had never heard a zither before and found the sound to be attractive. He approached Karas and persuaded him to play for him at his hotel, and made a recording, which Reed brought back to the studio to test. He liked the effect when the zither's sound was placed against the recorded dialogue and, ignoring the protests of many around him, hired Karas and brought him to London for 12 weeks.

Anton Karas screened the movie hundreds of times, devising music for each scene. The Third Man ended up with a vast amount of music, scored in virtually every scene of its 104 minutes. Ironically, the piece that became known as the "Third Man Theme" was something that Anton Karas had written two decades earlier and hadn't played in over 15 years. As he later explained to Reed, playing the zither for a whole night for tips was hard work, and one tended to play the easiest pieces the most often, to save the fingers.

Other zither players never got it to sound just right. The truth was that as recorded for the movie, "The Third Man Theme" was one of the first practical examples of overdubbing on a hit record, rivaling Les Paul's work--Anton Karas had gotten just the right effect working underneath Reed's kitchen table, and had gotten the piece just right by recording and mixing more than one zither part.

The Third Man was finished and prepared for release, and Reed and the production company, London Films, tried to raise interest in it through the music. None of the record companies, however, was interested in recording Karas or releasing the "Third Man Theme." The music was too strange and different, and although British movies had produced some soundtrack successes in the past, those were usually more conventional light classical pieces, not a jangly piece of music played on a central European folk instrument.

3 out of 5 stars Pleasant "ethnic" melodies.......2007-01-22

The tunes on this disc have a nice, comforting sound. Some of the selections are haunting, some have a peasant-liveliness. Nothing great or revolutionary, but plain good zither music, very enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars Third Man & Other Original Records.......2006-11-10

We bought it for a friend. They loved it.

4 out of 5 stars The first man of the zither.......2006-03-10

The CD didn't sound as good as the movie sound track. Ity sounded a bit rushed as if the sampling during the transfer was not sufficient

You've been looking for the original version of the music in "The Third Man", right? Every other CD on the market wouldn't work for you. But lucky for you, this is the one! Don't go wrong.

This set tells you why Jussi Bjorling is a perennial entrant in the "Tenor of the Century" sweepstakes. Even as the voice darkens from the light lyric to the full, darker instrument of the later recordings, we hear a singer whose elegant style, lovely timbre and innate musicality touch the heart. Many of the selections are sung in Swedish, less of a liability than you might suppose. In whatever language, Bjorling's molten gold flows lavishly. He eschews the sobs and sentimentality that disfigure so much verismo repertory, making his points with stylish vocalism. He's been called a "cool" singer, but try his Puccini and Verdi arias on Disc One and you'll find more than enough vocal and emotional heat. The selections include many neglected Scandinavian songs, sung, like the arias, with a naturalness that disarms criticism. -- Dan Davis

Amazon.com

Swedish tenor Jussi Björling gets many votes for the distinction of greatest all-time tenor. Up to the end, the voice projected a boyish vulnerability, though he also had enough stentorian power to sing the heavy Puccini roles and was ready to take on Lohengrin when he died. He was so deeply musical he eschewed the usual tenor vulgarity without ever slighting the music's theatricality. Even these four well-filled discs of arias and songs can't fully encompass the vocal riches he left behind, but there's a lot here, much of it from his earliest years and (hope you don't mind) sung in a Swedish translation. --David Patrick Stearns

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Superb!.......2001-07-29

This is an wonderful compilation of one of the most incredible voices on record. Whether you are a new or old Bjorling fan -- and who could hear that voice and not be enthralled by it -- this is a fine CD to have. The quality of the recording is excellent, and the range in years, from 1930 to 1959, gives a splendid overview of his dazzling talent. In addition to many of the arias one might expect, there are also lieder and songs in Swedish, as well as some charming duets with Jussi's wife, Anna-Lisa. I have quite a few other Bjorling CDs, and this is one of the best in terms of quality and scope. It is a most worthy addition to any Bjorling collection, regardless of its size.

3 out of 5 stars Beatiful singing - but where are the Swedish texts?.......2001-06-22

This is an excellent collection, the best available overview of a great tenor.

This would get 4 stars but has been marked down for only supplying token texts and translations in the large booklet. It is understandable (sort of) that the Italian opera excerpts don't merit texts and translations as (apart from the Callas recitals series) EMI generally doesn't provide texts with historical issues. However the tempting inclusion of a dozen or so texts to the Italian and Swedish songs makes one all the more aware of the miserliness of not providing all the texts.

5 out of 5 stars if you like bjorling this is the best thing you can get!.......2000-06-26

this is so awesome, i love his voice, this is good for anyone, the professional or just someone who wants to hear the greatest tenor of all times! this is so great

5 out of 5 stars The ULTIMATE Collection.......1999-11-02

When starting my Bjorling collection, I saw MANY CDs, with his early recordings. I was in a quandry as to what to buy, UNTIL I found this set. TRULY remarkable in many levels.FIRST and foremost, the voice. Captured in all levels, from the earliest to the latest. Truly wonderful, and the Swedish versions are a real treat to hear, don't worry, the Italian versions are here too!!Secondly, the remastering process. This set was remastered at Abbey Studios in London. For the first time I've heard, they actually pressed NEW 78s from the metal plates, and THEN remastered the new discs!!! Inspired, and the results--incredible.I find myself listening to Disc 3 the most. Very interesting, as it is the Swedish one. When the songs are terrific, along with the "standard" tenor arias, and it all comes together, it is PURE MAGIC!! I will admit that due to time limitations of recordings of this era, the opera house Bjorling is not fully conveyed. There are other CDs for that. Most notably "Romeo and Juliet", and for a REAL thrill, his ATLANTA concert, in STEREO, so much so, that the piano is even divided; left hand left, right hand right. Wait a minute, am I playing TWISTER??:-)) But if you want to skip all those unknown labels, you couldn't have a MORE complete set. ALL wit the great remastering I spoke of. Bjorling--His voice will NEVER die, at least in MY house!!!

5 out of 5 stars Definitive survey of one of the finest singers on record.......1998-09-25

Jussi Bjoerling was one of the greatest singers of the century. His voice is pure, effortless and yet thrilling. Even better than the quality of the voice is his style. He never scoops up to a note nor does he ever whoop down from one, instead, he uses perfect legato and faultless intonation to deliver the cleanest sound you'll ever hear from a tenor.

This collection, from the large set of EMI recordings, provides a wonderful survey of Bjoerling's career. He was a straight 'spinto' tenor, that is, between a lyrical tenor (like Pavarotti) and a dramatic tenor (like Domingo). Most of the Puccini roles demand a spinto and those are the roles that Bjoerling was unbeatable in (particularly Des Grieux in Manon Lescaut). However, I think I most prize this collection for the songs sung in English on the last disc. I had some of them on a cassette I wore out in the car and others on a vinyl disc I wore out at home. For shear beauty of voice, the Berceuse by Jocelyn is stunning. For perfect diction, intonation and style, Love but a Day is breathtaking. Buy this set and I guarantee you'll fall in love with what many think is the finest voice on record.

Probably the finest in Native Indian music I've heard. Nicole was magnificant, and her fathers production of the albun was masterful. Sure hope they keep up the good work. Would like to see them in person on stage sometime if they perform in my area.

Greeted with shock and amazement upon its original release in 1970, this two-CD collection featuring virtuoso Natalie Hinderas on piano is one of the best collections of music by African American composers of the 20th century. Hinderas's catholic approach to the century's music allows her to delight the Chopin-Ravel-Joplin continuum (wide though it is) of listeners with R. Nathaniel Dett's impressionistic, ragtimey "In the Bottoms." The nuanced jumpiness, replete with dissonant shades, of William Grant Still's "Three Visions" recalls Ives here and Ellington there. What's most challenging here is the works from 1953 to 1969, featuring Pulitzer Prize winner George Walker's study of harmonic intervals in his Sonata No. 1 and Talib Rasul-Hakim's shimmering "Sound-Gone." There are tone-row studies (Arthur Cunningham) and Stockhausen-esque electronics (Olly Wilson), but what stands out most is Hinderas's unflappable perfection regardless of the musical elements. Whether razor-sharp or dancingly playful, Hinderas executes with a largely vibrato-free touch, forcing the ear to focus on her solid chordal touch. --Andrew Bartlett

4 out of 5 stars Has more soul than some.......2001-10-03

This disc is CDCM's second visit to the studios at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY. My main criticisms of the earlier release were concerned with the rather cold nature of the compositions featured, together with the disc's concentration on music by male composers. I am pleased to say that both of those criticisms have been addressed somewhat with this release.

The disc begins with Neil B. Rolnick's "Vocal Chords" (1988). This is an 8-minute wordless blues-style improvisation for singer and live electronics. It comes across as a fun exercise for performer - Kathleen Myers in this recording - as well as for concert audience and it works rather better on CD than does many another live improv' I have heard. Rolnick's other work on the disc is an exploration of blues-related material of a somewhat different kind. By taking samples from a recording of the legendary blues master, Robert Johnson, and reconstructing/deconstructing these materials, "A Robert Johnson Sampler" (1987) invites a re-examination of countess blues clichés. The result is not only amusing and thought provoking; it is surprisingly listenable, alternating between the whimsical and the introspective throughout its 13-odd minutes.

Pauline Oliveros' "Lion's Tale" (1989) is essentially a work for computer-controlled gamelan, with samples from the Berkeley Gamelan triggered by a computer program at rates up to 1800 per minute. It sounds much like a gamelan improvisation but involves speeds that could simply not be played by human performers. Like much music from Oliveros, it is necessary to listen quite deeply into this piece to get the most from it. At a surface level, the piece comes across as a pleasant but not terribly interesting work. Deeper listening, however, allows the rapidly triggered samples (which imbue the piece with an electronic-like texture at times) to work a somewhat hypnotic and transfiguring effect over its 15-minute duration. Nevertheless, I suspect that the piece probably works better in live performance than on a recording.

The same feeling lingers throughout "Child and the Moon-Tree" - a 17-minute reduction of a longer, fully staged work, by composer and vocalist, Julie Kabat. The work is a poly-stylistic assemblage of sung and spoken texts, with an accompaniment of computer processed sound samples ranging from Noh Theatre music, the chanting of a Mongolian shepherd, whale songs and musical saws. Unfortunately, while Ms Kabat's voice is a treat to listen to, we are given no real guide to the story being recounted and it is easy for a listener to become lost quite quickly. It also leaves me with the feeling that too much has been cut from the work in order to reduce it to a size suitable for inclusion on this disc. Perhaps CDCM should have taken the plunge and featured the entire work?

Barton McLean's "Visions of a Summer Night" (1989) is another work presented here in extract form only. Just two of its movements are featured: 'A Little Night Music (Eine Kleine...) ' and 'Demons of the Night'. Both present something of an electronic, yet almost orchestral-sounding, picture of midsummer evenings in North-eastern US. The first uses conspicuous and persistent cricket samples to establish its relevance, while the latter presents rawer synthetic instrumental voices to concoct an altogether more abstract musical portrait of imaginary (one hopes!) terrors of the night. Both extracts incorporate a rather more raucous and raw-edged character to their sound-world than would accord with my own experiences of North-eastern US nights, being decidedly more nightmarish and foreboding than I would have expected. Or maybe Petersburg, NY is a scarier place than either Massachusetts or Connecticut?

The disc ends with Joel Chadabe's "Modalities" (1989), an interactively computer-composed piece, of little real interest to anyone not of an academic analytical bent.

Overall then, while not terribly likely to appeal to a very wide audience, this disc has much to commend it for those interested in late 20th century American art music, of which it is a fine example. Most potential purchasers would be wise to sample before they buy, however.

4 out of 5 stars A convenient selection of Bloch's piano works - though not all the best pieces are included and the reading is sometimes flawed .......2007-02-26

In 1990 Marco Polo published 2 CDs comprising the complete piano music of Ernest Bloch, played by the Hungarian pianist Istvan Kassai (see my reviews of Bloch: Complete Piano Works, Vol.1 and Ernest Bloch: Piano Works (Complete) Vol. 2). That collection came as a Godsend to the Bloch devotee, as until then Bloch's piano music had been difficult to find, seldom recorded (though the CDs didn't really claim credit for it, Kassai even boasted no less than five world premiere recordings - and one of those, the Four Circus Pieces, remains to this day the only one) and scattered on various LPs.

Disappointingly, this initial release did not really spawn a revival of interest in the piano music of Bloch and no flurry of recordings followed: other than two recordings of the magnificent Piano Sonata, which came in motley collections (see my reviews of John Jensen on Music & Arts Carl Ruggles, Ernest Bloch, Paul Reale, Larry Lipkis: Piano Sonatas and other works and Myron Silberstein on Connoisseur Silberstein plays Franck, Bloch and Giannini), and a few other pieces here and there, the "Blochite" had very little to feed on. This situation remains to me an enigma, as Bloch's piano music strikes me as one of the most original and hauntingly beautiful of the first fifty years of the 20th century. Some say that Bloch didn't write idiomatically for the piano and that his compositional thought and textures were too orchestral. But why should a composer avoid writing trills and tremolos and reduce the piano to a skeleton? Some influences can be heard - whiffs of Scriabin, Ravel and Debussy emerge here and there - but Bloch has integrated them in a highly personal style. He makes full use of all the coloristic possibilities of the instrument and puts them at the service of an intensely Blochian sound-world, in turn mysterious and sensuously "Jewish-Oriental", and starkly powerful, evoking (by Bloch's own admission) a fantasized world of the Old Testament.

Anyway, Fingerhut's selection, recorded at the end of 2001, is the only real competition to Kassai's two discs. Bloch's output for the piano was produced basically at two period of his life: in the early 1920s, as he was established in the US ("Nirvana", "In the Night" and the "Five Sketches in Sepia" date from that period), and then in 1935-6, with the Piano Sonata and the suite "Visions and Prophecies" (actually a reworking of his symphonic piece "Voice in the Wilderness"). Left out from Fingerhut's selection are the "Four Circus Pieces" (1922), the three "Poems of the Sea" (1922), the Sacred Dance (1923), and the early Ex-Voto (1914).

Interpretively, I feel that Fingerhut is at her best in the more atmospheric pieces. She excels in the short hushed and mysterious tone-poems "Nirvana" and "In the Night", where her finely controlled pianissimos (playing as if the music came from a distance) and resonance-producing pedalling convey a fascinating sense of mystery. Likewise in the "Five Sketches in Sepia" she is much more atmospheric and appositely moody than the here relatively leaden Kassai ("moods" was the title Bloch initially considered for the pieces). On the other hand, in "Visions & Prophecies" she gives an impression of agitation and misses the stark grandeur of the pieces, which in turn Kassai captures convincingly.

Whereas all these pieces are short or collections of short, evocative miniatures ("Nirvana", the longest, is 6:15), the Piano Sonata is the piece of substance, in turn sensuously evocative and angrily pounding. In the first movement Fingerhut's reading is similar to Kassai's to a fault (and to the second), with the same forward-moving and rather earthbound and perfunctory introductory "Maestoso ed energico" and the same moderately paced "animato" but with careful attention to the details of dynamics and articulation. But neither Fingerhut nor Kassai are a match here for the outstandingly poetic and passionate Myron Silberstein. In the central "Pastorale" Fingerhut displays more subtle nuances and more haunting atmosphere than the Hungarian pianist, but a comparison with Silberstein shows that she lacks a sense of dramatic animation in the passages where tension builds up. Like Kassai she takes the Finale at the metronome tempo indicated by Bloch, which imparts it the feeling of a grandiose solemn march rather than (as in Silberstein's more animated pace) a triumphant one. She doesn't quite have the muscle power of Kassai and blurs some coloristic details (like the grace notes at 0:08 into the movement). Later on she tends to press the tempo and saturate the textures. There is more stark grandeur at Kassai's steadier tempo.

All things weighted, the interpretive pluses and minuses are equally shared then between the Chandos selection and the Marco Polo complete traversal. For the Bloch completist like me the choice is easy: I have both. But the less committed and more discriminating music lover may be faced with a conundrum as to which one to go for. The inclusion in Fingerhut's selection of the 15-minute Enfantines - as its title implies, a collection of 10 pedagogical pieces for children, and hardly the most significantly Blochian work of its composer, instead of more typical and substantial stuff like the Poems of the Sea or Danse Sacrée, or even the mischievous and dazzling Four Circus Pieces, works against the Chandos release and in favor of Kassai, as do the invaluable notes from Suzanne Bloch, the composer's daughter and Bloch authority, which grace the Marco Polo survey. But the availability of these two discs seems to have become episodic. In their absence Fingerhut's offering is welcome as a serviceable introduction to the magnificent piano music of Ernest Bloch.
