5 out of 5 stars i can't believe they did this in '82........2007-06-19

it's really just mindblowing. Bathory still had 2 more years before his debut, and you had Venom and Motorhead... buuut. This is just totally devastating. Discharge actually establish a HELLISH, BRUTAL sound that's not cheesy or takes any getting used to, you don't really have to 'gain appreciation' for it.

Discharge is just fkn hard.

5 out of 5 stars BEST PUNK ALBUM OF ALL TIME.......2006-12-22

This is as good as it gets.Hostile, seething rage committed to tape.An avalanche of razor guitars, thundering bass, colossal, thrashing drums and the angriest, most demented vocals ever layed down.
Discharge reached their zenith with this 1982 release, and in the process paved the way for Grindcore,Thrash Metal,Death Metal,etc.,etc...
One of the most influential rock albums ever.A sublime, crazed masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars Now THIS is a band.......2006-01-14

I can't seriously think of a better band than Discharge. They are tighter than a crab's [back] and the formula is intact: riff, riff with verse, riff #2, riff #2 with chorus, then repeat twice, then end abruptly. AWESOME. I mean, don't cut corners. When this album was in my collection in high school, I deliberately played it to piss people off. Listen to the bass solo on "The Final Bloodbath" at about the :39 mark: it's going so fast, it disintegrates into total unstructured noise, AND IT'S ONLY A ONE-NOTE SOLO. Good God. "State Control" is one of the top 10 punk singles ever. And "I Won't Subscribe" is the blueprint for every punk song in history. Rancid should be servicing these guys after a show, they are so brutal. Nothing even comes close. "Drunk With Power" is almost unintentionally funny it's so good. This album is worth it for the small (they were bigger on the LP) photos of the band alone, playing their instruments in some live setting: the lead singer Cal looks like he is screaming his freakin' lungs right out of his body. Also, the lyric sheet. Get a load of these profound poetic phrases: "Britain among others deal in death when selling arms to developing countries / to developing countries they sell death / where there is urgent need for medical programmes". And that's the whole song. No, really. I mean, why ramble on, get your point across and move on to the next one. I wish I could have sat around and watched these guys practice in their prime, I bet they would run through about 150 songs in an hour. Simply put, this album is loaded with extra tracks, has the lyrics, photos, supposedly it's remastered (not that it matters, it still sounds like a freight train of at least thirty overdubbed guitars playing the same riff). I seriously cannot think of one album in any genre of music that this couldn't obliterate with one song. What more could you possibly ask for? Buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Prepare For A BeatDown!!.......2006-01-05

Imagine a gang of four spiky-haired English street punks stomping and pummelling you in a dreary alley somewhere in London or New York. Imagine the impact of their combat boots and fists as they crash repeatedly onto your unprotected head and into your gut and groin. Imagine for good measure they add in a few whacks with a pipe or a baseball bat. Now imagine that going on for a total of 47 minutes and 37 seconds and that is a good approximation of the aural equivalent of this record. If you like your music loud, fast, aggressive, and historically groundbreaking, not to mention violent, brutal and extremely working class, it doesn't get any better than this. This record is no joke. Slayer is often considered to have been one of the most extreme bands ever, and much of their early sound, especially on their masterpiece Reign In Blood, was inspired by this album. See Nothing Hear Nothing Say Nothing is a key foundation of all fast, brutal, and extreme rock to follow. This album is the true and original "rage against the machine" and the real "fight the power". It is harsh, angry, pissed-off punk industrial noise. It speaks for itself. Prepare for a beatdown!!

5 out of 5 stars The grandfathers of crust.......2005-06-18

Discharge. To those of us who saw them back in 1982, just saying the name is enough. We know which Discharge album is the one that matters and when we reach for a Discharge disc to put in the player, this is the one we choose. The three best and most interrelated releases are all on this disc. The first 14 tracks are from the "Hear Nothing..." (LP), the next three are from the Never Again (7") and the next two are from the State Violence (7"ep). So, what does it sound like? Well, the closest thing to it would be a circular saw. This is a "Wall Of Sound" that Phil Spector never dreamed of. A full frontal assault on the senses. Nothing else even comes close. This must be played LOUD - as LOUD as possible, play it for your neighbors, the next block over, on a stereo pumping out at least 200 watts. A couple of cheesy little plastic speakers or headphones just wont cut it. With these three recordings, Discharge became the grandfathers of Crust, DBeat, and more. This album created a whole new genre for hardcore and Discharge became the most heavily copied band ever. If you don't believe me, buy this, then go out to Profane Existence, and buy any record at random. (Guess what, it sounds a bit like Discharge) And not without reason. Back in 1982, the sonic wall they created on this album was unlike anything that had come before it. It's not metal, there are no double bass drums, no self indulgent guitar solo's, or silly vocal falsettos. Okay, they did get a bit weird on the last four tracks, but you are going to buy this for the first 19 and ignore the last four, trust me. By the time you get to Doomsday, the 19th track, you are going to say "Oh, My, Friggin God" and you will have a new favorite album, or you just wont get it and you'll never play it again. Either way, you'll know it was harder louder and more intense than anything else on the store shelves back in 1982, and its still holding it's own in 2005. Other reviewers have compared this record favorably to Motorhead and Venom, and unfavorably to Good Charlott, Avril Lavigne and Blink 182. But these are not accurate comparisons. The closest comparison you can make is to bands like Antisect and Anti-System. The only way to make this disc better would be to remove the last four tracks. As it is, this is easily one of the three most important punk / hardcore records ever. If you disagree with that statement, then this disc is probably older than you are. It is simply impossible to overstate the importance of this album, and the influence it has continued to hold.

Destruction takes over where Metallica left off. Metallica ran out of steam, but Destruction keeps bulldozing along. if you have Kreator and Sodom in your collection, Destruction belongs there too. think of this as the new metal up your rectum, while Metallica is now a watery diarrhea.

5 out of 5 stars A Future Classic.......2004-05-22

I couldn't believe myself when I first heard this record. I was addicted to their last record (The Antichrist, which is a masterpiece by the way) and I had high hopes for this one. But the record even topped my hopes. It blew me away.

1- The Ravenous Beast - One of the greatest tracks ever recorded by a Thrash band ever! The guitar riff is simply amazing and Schmier's voice is amazing too.

2- Metal Discharge - This is another future classic without doubt! This riff rules!

3- Rippin' The Flesh Appart - This song is somehow different from the first two since it's more slow and melodic (but still with some fast riffs in the middle) but still rocks and is a personal favourite.

4- Fear of the Moment - This is like an old tune. Catchy riffs but the same Destruction type chorus. Great song but not the best.

5- Mortal Remains - GREAT RIFF! I love this song!! It's very catchy and so cool. Very cool song.

6- Desecrators of the New Age - The third song that have a video (the other two being the first two of the record) and without doubt a fan favourite.

7- Historical Force Feed - This riff is very much alike the riff from Mortal Remains but still the song is very good with some good bass lines. Not the best but with a great chorus.

8- Savage Symphony of Terror - The first verse says everything:
"It's inside my brain,
It drives me insane
It's eating me alive
Into the pits of black,
A faithless payback?
Evil twisted mind!!"

9- Made to Be Broken - Great bass line and a fantastic guitar riff from Mike. Schmier's voice is very strong in this one. Great little song.

10- Vendetta - It finishes this record in a high note. This song is so great I can't even express in words. Listen to it.

This record is without doubt one the greatest from 2003 and especially one the greatest from this German band. Great opportunity to own a masterpiece of Thrash Metal.

4 out of 5 stars Destruction smokes!.......2004-03-02

This is the first album I've bought by the classic German thrash metal band Destruction. I must say I'm quite impressed, as far as I know the vocalist/bassist Schmier and the guitarist Mike are original members and the drummer Marc Reign is fairly new to the band. Schmiers' vocals are razor sharp, downright creepy at times, and remind me of Mille Petroza from Kreator. The band plays old school thrash in the same style as old Metallica or Slayer even. As bonus tracks they cover Metallica's Whiplash and there's also a cover of Killers by Iron Maiden. The band even covers a punk song by the Exploited called U.S.A. My favorite songs off the album are Ravenous Beast, Made to be Broken, Vendetta, and the cover of Killers. I would recommend this band to anyone who's a fan of thrash. For a three piece band these guys kick major butt, and they have a cool leather jacket/rivet/bullet belt image like a lot of the older thrash bands used to have, but have now abandoned. To top it all off Schmier plays those wicked looking flying-v Dean basses! I definitely have to get some more of their albums.

5 out of 5 stars Looks like the awesome Why 12" + 1 or 2 of the 7"s.......2006-01-14

Ok, I admit it, I don't have this exact CD. And I'm too lazy to go thru my records and pull out the 12" and the 7"s and see which songs are on what so I can say what's on this CD. It's pretty clear that it's, definitely the unbelievable Why 12" which, by itself, I'd call, quite possibly, the finest hardcore punk rock 12" record of all time. It looks like, from the songs that they added 1 or 2 7"s, which were pre this Why 12". All those (5?) 7" records were great, classic Discharge.

The Society's Victims box set, which I did get only has like 90% of each record. So, if this has 'em all from the 3 or so records on this, well, that's a good thing eh?

You can see why so many (mainly Swedish) punk bands did a 'dis' cover sound. Eminently listenable and honored by 'dis' bands (DISGUST, etc). There's no metal on this CD. That's, of course, a good thing. This is the finest UK hardcore punk rock. chrisbct@hotmail.com

5 out of 5 stars For people who are too lazy to get every discharge CD.......2005-10-15

Discharge is a rather good band but I liked their early stuff (everything on the first disc.) better than anything else on this box set. the 2nd disc has a lot of the LP stuff (Hear nothing See Nothing Say Nothing, Grave new world, Massacre Divine, etc.) and some of that is okay but I know you may be turned down from the Hair metalish songs. the 3rd disc has some 2004 updated songs and a bunch of live material (I Personally don't care for live material except if it has exclusive songs for that album like Conflict's Turning rebellion into money because it has songs that were from Crass and so forth) get this if you are really lazy to get every album by discharge.

3 out of 5 stars Good band, somewhat average product........2005-07-26

I will be honest here, i don't like punk/hardcore very much. Pretty much 90% of it is absoulute monotonus trash, however, i found Dischage to be a very good group. It might sound contradictory, but it is true, these guys are the only punk band i ever liked, but i absolutly hate the bands/gendre that were influenced by them. Dischage were the originators to, sadly, the horrible gendre known as 80's hardcore, many have tried to copy their style and it resulted into a gendre full of posers. This isn't a uncommon trend, for every one good original band that does something new, there are about 20 horrible ones trying to immatate them. Helloween did something new and creative, now we have a whole gendre of inept (...) (Blind Gardian, Stratovarious, Hammerfall, do i need to go on?) trying to copy them, the same goes for Discharge, their music was GREAT, but the aftermath resulted in this plague known as New York Hardcore.

This box set is basically one of those retrospective career spanning things, and while i like the idea of this, i really don't think it works too well for a band like Discharge. For one thing, Discharge has been really known for only one thing and one thing only, the "Hear Nothing, See Nothing, Say Nothing" LP which is their definative work (which i recommend you get instead of this) and this box set does not really add anything to the greatness of that, just a bunch of singles (which are found on WHY) the horrendus "Grave New World" and some live stuff. The packaging is another downfall of this box set, the discs come in cardboard sleaves which i thought was kind of cheap, they could of put this thing in a nice jewel case or something to make it worth your bucks. Disc 1 is nothing special at all, it is just soccer hooligan music, all of the singles from Discharges early years. Disc 2 is the "Hear Nothing" LP and "Grave New World" LP on one disc, one half is great while the othe half is not. Disc 3 is basically a live "best of" kind of deal, with live Discharge cuts from the early days and some recent ones with their new singer.

This set is just average, i didn't like the packaging at all and there was nothing new that this added that was as good as what was on the "See Nothing" reissue. Get that instead of this box set, which i found to be nothing more then a cash in attemp from record companies.

4 out of 5 stars GOOD COMP BUT..........2005-03-06

A best bang for the buck, comprehensive overview of discharges career.
80 songs on 3 cds, including songs from all of their records, including a couple from GRAVE NEW WORLD,which can otherwise be found on used vinyl, and some songs from the audio of the forthcoming DVD.I'd really stick to buying DECONTROL-THE SINGLES + HEAR NOTHING.. +DISCHARGE 2001s self titled album.More money,I know, but essential discography for the true fan. This box is cheap but might prevent the purchase of essential albums.ONLY FOR CASUAL LISTENERS.NOT A TRUE ANTHOLOGY !!!!!

        3 out of 5 stars POOR.......2004-09-22

Cal's voice is nice on this record, back to his normal tone,as oppossed to the high pitch of his "Grave New World" and "Massacre Divine" albums.
Guitarwork is fine and the overall sound is incredibly hi-fi.But what really ruins it al is the bass and drums, sorta jamming,cuasi-funk and totally unimaginative,as if the guys had entered the studio just to jam it up,really poor.My advice, stick to early or latest DISCHARGE

        4 out of 5 stars Good collection........2004-11-25

The first disc consists of what Discharge are most well known for. All out hardcore punk aggression. And these guys play it damn well. The second disc is thrashy heavy metal. I absolutely hated this disc when I first listened to it. But after giving it another chance and getting used to the high, scratchy vocals, it grew on me really quickly and I now enjoy it quite a bit. I recommend this collection to fans of Discharge. Whether or not you like the material from their metal crossover period, the first disc alone makes it worth buying.

5 out of 5 stars Looks like what it says it is, the first 9(?) DISCHARGE 7"s. All brilliant.......2006-01-14

Gotta make for a swell album. Problem is, I see on the cover that Margret Thatcher 7". Listening to that was the first indication that the band was beginning to travel the metal path. That means this CD is totally great, classic hardcore until that record shows up. The MAU MAUS did the same thing, brilliant first 3 7"s but then the 1985 and later 2 7"s at the end of their CD compiling their singles, well, let's just say I can't listen to the final 5 or so songs cuz they start gettin' metalish.

It's gonna be the same on this CD, assuming you got no interest in metal. Course, first 2 ZEPPLIN albums, all JIMI albums are tremendous, however, all metal after that gets, how shall we say, shrill? flavorless? lost the spark, just poundin' it without the flavor that good punk rock typically has (to my ears)? Sure, some (many) folks like metal. And many like the punk/metal sound. Good for them. I'm just gonna leave the room when it comes on, same as most rap and most country. A guy's gotta have his limits.

Those 7"s were all cherished by most punx back in the day (late 70's, early 80's). They'd come from the UK to Southern California, flown over, apparently, by Goldenvoice, the promoter, who would have them do like one or two L.A. region shows then one in Santa Barbara and one in San Diego. Pretty cool man.

The first 5 7"s you can't go wrong. It's real hardcore from the UK, probably the best band they had of that style of music. Yeah, there was GBH and the lesser known MAU MAU's (whom I can never denigrate cuz I still totally love their pre 1985 3 7"s and live lp). DISCHARGE was probably the most well know UK hardcore punk band with maybe GBH just behind them, and the EXPLOITED.

Did you know there are/were a bunch of Swedish punk bands with Dis in their name all making the Discharge flavor music? Voice just goin' and goin, classic UK hard punk style, and sorta heavy punk music. I'm not sure how to describe Discharge's music. It is distinct. It really scratches an itch that you wanna hear in punk rock, no soft, all blasting. Really, definitive for UK hardcore punk.

If you like it unrelentingly hard, all punk with a little metal/punk at the end, this CD is for you. chrisbct@hotmail.com
