5 out of 5 stars Just beautiful and flawless.......2004-12-24

The last art by the perfectionist. Clarity of sound and rich nuance cannot be reproduced by PC or inexpensive audio system.

I removed CD from my portable during the first track "Zone" and played on JBL 4343W powered by Marantz Polar Star power amp.

To reproduce fully HiFi sound in this CD, probably you will need to upgrade your audio system.

When played on Highend system, you will be surprised at the dynamic range and clarity - "Spirit of the water" is a good example where whispering voice by Talluah (Pete's daughter) is heard.

I believe this version "Spirit of the water" sung by Pete and Talluah is the best version after comparing Camel Original, Andy Latimer, Mirage and Pete Burdern's Mirage.

I am really sad that there will never be new songs by Pete. The great farewell gift to fans like me.

4 out of 5 stars Another excellent album........2004-09-13

I was excited to find this album, but saddened to learn it was Pete Bardens' last. It is a strong "new age" disc very consistent with his previous releases. Also check out "Speed of Light" and, what I believe to be his personal best, "Water Colors."

4 out of 5 stars Pete was a great man.......2003-07-06

Having been a long-time fan of Pete's work, I was excited to hear that he was living nearby when I was residing in Malibu. Through circumstance, I had the very fortunate opportunity to make friends with Pete shortly before he passed away, and assisted in the early steps of promoting this project. Pete was reluctant... he wasn't sure that he would be able to get a contract for the release of this album; he wasn't even sure if there was anyone out there who wanted to hear it. When I first listened to the final mix of the disc, and printed up a number of samples for him to send out as promos to find a distributor, I was in awe. This music was a labor of love for him... he put heart and soul into it, and you can hear it in each track. He was excited to have his daughter lending her vocal talents to the project, and very thankful of his association with Mick Fleetwood. In many ways, this disc is a great big thank you from Pete to Mick, for being such a close friend to him.
He passed quickly, with less than a year between diagnosis of cancer and the exit from this plane... but during the time I knew him, I found him to be very passionate about his work, both his music and his art, which graces the cover. This, along with a passion that he had for life, is reflected in the music on this disc. I will carry the memories I have of Pete with me as I go, and listen to his music to feel his presence again.
For the fans... Pete was working on a few new things that don't appear on this disc, including a project with his son. From what I heard of these tracks, you may be hearing from his son sometime in the future, the music sounded promising.

4 out of 5 stars posthumous offering different.......2002-09-22

on most of petes albums, Mick Fleetwood has guest percussed on a track or two, but on this album he percussed on all tracks and co-produced: and the drum work is distinctively Mick! The drum work seems to give a unity to the album generally lacking in Petes albums-his vastly different avenues he liked to do was a charm, but sometimes it could make the albums seem somewhat disjointed or unplanned-as the Italians say "Has the faults of its Qualities". That description does not apply here--it has a very good blend of sounding united, without sounding the same. Pete is at the top of his form on synth stops and making it sound good, always one of Petes major virtues. Have found album full of surprises and very enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars Easily the most overlooked band of the 90s.......2006-12-08

I've been missing out on Levitation for the past 10 years due to my stupid mistake of not picking this up used when I first saw the amazing collage style cover art on this album. The artwork alone should have peaked my interest enough to just buy it. I jotted down some notes and looked up a review on the album on Allmusic only to find a very non descript blurb about how they had "pop-like melodies with heavy guitars."
With so many bands out there and even more today, how the hell was I supposed to know that these guys weren't Nirvana clones? Another thing that is annoying is that mp3's are next to impossible to find for anything that they've ever done. Well I should have done my homework and known by their band name (coming from Hawkwind's Levitation) that this wasn't your run of the mill band.
In England maybe these guys had a few critics and fans on their side but unfortunately I think that might have been it. The States I don't think had a clue about the mighty Levitation but what's new? I did read a critic's review just recently who said that you can have your Spacemen 3's and your A.R. Kanes cuz Levitation blows them away. I would have to disagree with this since Levitation doesn't sound like either band but more importantly that Levitation is who they are.
No one sounds quite like them and that's the beauty of it. Imagine the spaciness of Hawkwind or Spacemen 3, the powerful drumming/guitarwork of Swervedriver or even Loop combined with the melodies of say Slowdive and vocals along the lines of House of Love which the vocalist Terry Bickers was once a major part of. Then take all of these elements and make them into something so unique that you can't quite place them into any category and you've got Levitation. Another thing that is mindblowing is that 4 of the 8 tracks on this album are live but these live tracks are so well done that you'd think that they were studio recordings. For all fans of prog, pop, space, and other unique forms of music! Buy NOW!

5 out of 5 stars Classic brilliant album!!!!!!!!!.......2003-09-14

Stunning psychedelic guitar with EXTREMELY heavy guitar, hippy ambience, heavy riffs beautiful walls of sound. I CANNOT RECOMMEND LEVITATION ENOUGH! The live tracks are superb and show just how AMAZING they were live; my vinyl lp doesnt include 'paid in kind' i might add. Buy 'Need for not' as well cos they both are brilliant........so just BUY it!

4 out of 5 stars Hawkwind - 'Levitation' (Griffin).......2004-07-31

Nice CD reissue of(said by many)to be Hawkwind's most polished sounding lp ever.Originally released in 1980,'Levitation' proves to not only keep old HW fan's interest intact, but also draw new fans in as well.Line-up is impressive, with Brock,Harvey Bainbridge,Huw Lloyd Langton(an actual original member BACK in the ranks),Tim Blake and Ginger Baker(yes, the one who was in Cream and Masters Of Reality). As far as I'm concerned, the best tracks are the superb title cut "Levitation","Motorway City","Psychosis" and "Dust Of Time".A bit more straight ahead rock with some space elements.Hawkwind still plays a couple of these numbers during their live performances anymore from time to time.

5 out of 5 stars Recommended for Anyone.......2002-08-27

This is one of those Hawkwind Albums that fans will debate for best posistion, but notwithstanding the bickering, this one is safe for any new listener to Hawkwind. Solid rock from end-to-end. And, yes, the cliche Baker-drums have a powerful impact on the sound. If you want a dose of powerhouse rock, go for this. If you are more progressively-inclined, go for Hall of the Mountain Grill first, but definitely add this one to your stash if you like what you hear of Hawkwind.

5 out of 5 stars Another great Hawkwind album.......2002-06-04

Levitation was originally released in 1980 on the Bronze label (the British label that issued albums from Colosseum, Manfred Mann's Earth Band, Uriah Heep). As every self-respecting Hawkwind fan out there knows, the band was never known for keeping a steady lineup, but it usually never affected the quality of their output. By this time, 1980, the band featured yet another lineup change. For a short time, in 1978, the band went by the name of Hawklords and released an album that year called 25 Years On. That album was their first to feature bassist Harvey Bainbridge. In 1979, they changed their name back to Hawkwind and got new members in. Dave Brock is here, as always, with Huw Lloyd-Langton returning (he appeared on their 1970 debut), Tim Blake, of Gong fame, and fresh off his two brilliant solo albums, Crystal Machine (1977) and New Jerusalem (1978), and originally Simon King on drums. This was the lineup that gave us the Live '79 album. When they got to work on Levitation in mid 1980, they recorded with Simon King, but halfway through, he left, and a totally unlikely drummer stepped in: none other than ex-Cream and Blind Faith drummer Ginger Baker! What an odd fellow to include in Hawkwind, to say the least. Also interesting, this album, like Stevie Wonder's Secret Life of Plants, was one of the earliest albums recorded digitally. Despite the digital recording, it doesn't sound like digital recordings you expect from the mid 1980s, and the synth sounds are still analog (Moog, EMS Synthi A, like what Blake was using in Gong and his solo efforts). This album is stuffed with more great Hawkwind classics like the title track, "Motorway City", "Who's Gonna Win the War", and "Dust of Time". "Prelude" is a wonderful Tim Blake ambient piece, and shows that this is as good as anything that came off his New Jerusalem album, it's too bad it's too short, but this is after all, a Hawkwind album. While many other bands really went downhill bad by 1980, Hawkwind still continued releasing great albums, and remained so even in the 1990s. If you're a Hawkwind fan, be sure to add Levitation to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Hawkwind at their best!.......2001-10-26

Hawkwind got the 80's off to an amazing start with Levitation.
This is a GREAT ALBUM! The production values are state of the
art, the synthesizers have never sounded better and the songs
rank as some of the best Hawkwind have ever recorded! This is
Hawkwind at their recorded best! AND, Hawkwind really rock out
on this album! Kudos to Ginger Baker for his adventurous drum-
ming! My favorite songs include the title track, a revved up
space rocker with a very exciting instrumental section that may
be my all time favorite Hawkwind song; the fast paced instrumen-
tals," World of Tiers" and "Space Chase" and Tim Blake's gor-
geous synthesizer instrumental " Prelude". The only mistake is
the song "Nuclear Toy", the bonus track which is included on the
cd version! This song is very weak and should NOT have been
included! Otherwise, GREAT ALBUM!! A MUST HAVE!!

4 out of 5 stars The ultimate Hawkwind Road Album.......1999-09-17

Not quite in the same league as 'Warrior at the Edge of Time', but a definite Hawkwind masterpiece.

To enjoy, find an open road, turn it up really loud and cruise on down the highway.

Life on this planet never felt so good!

3 out of 5 stars At its core a strong album, surrounded by duller songs.......2005-10-27

Terry Vickers left The House of Love after its earliest and best albums, taking his chiming guitar sound and evidently his ability to create textured depth on record with him into Levitation, which issued this album and an e.p., Coterie, whose title track ends the US version of this l.p. from 1992. Certainly fans of HoL will want this spin-off album, and others who favor more introspective, slightly psychedelic influences mixed into guitar-based "indie" rock would like this. It does not leap out at you; a more meditative, if insistent, aura permeates these tracks.

It holds up respectably for most of the tracks, although his voice lacks any resonance, merely filling in space behind music that does not differ much from his previous band. What works best are tracks 5-6-7. Here, the sound thickens as Vickers explores hints of Middle Eastern modalities that enrich these meandering, jangling songs greatly. While the album itself is uneven--too many songs sound too similar--these three songs at its core make this a record that fans of Britpop's gloomier early 90s/late 80s post-Smiths atmospheric, drifting melodies will enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Simply brilliant!!!!!!!!.......2003-09-14
