Absolutely fantastic.......2007-07-06
Dream Theater's seventh album brings it to the table, dishes it out, and cleans up afterwards. A great album that, while only containing seven tracks, crosses the entire spectrum from the fast and heavy "This Dying Soul" to the calm and methodical "Vacant", easily more variation that many other bands out there can fit into albums with twice as many tracks.
Train of Thought has something for everyone, and for fans of Dream Theater, new and old, it certainly doesn't disappoint. And the more you listen to it, the more you grow to like it. Definitely a recommended buy, period.
I don't know what these people are on. This is definitely a great album........2007-06-28
One thing I've noticed with all Dream Theater reviews save a couple (which you'll find out which after you read this sentence): all the critical fans whine because it's not another "Images & Words" or perhaps "Metropolis Part 2: Scenes From a Memory". Both were good albums but while these fans proclaim to not want monotony they also criticize the albums for not being like them, which is something I, at least personally, find a bit contradictory.
I don't know if I'd call myself a Dream Theater album. This was actually the second album of theirs I bought after "Imges & Words" but even to this day I still listen to it and with gusto. Even the lyrics are impressive for the most part. "Face yourself, man/Brace yourself and trace your hell back!"
This album is one of their heavier albums, probably even the heaviest of all of them (though I haven't heard all of them yet, including the new album). If you like a more metal sound you'll like this. It may be more "straight up" or "direct" than their previous albums but it still has its "prog-ness" to it. There's not many soft songs on here except "Vacant", which is short. Other than that, the only real softness is on parts of "Endless Sacrifice" and "In The Name of God", and I say part because a lot of those songs have heavy parts too.
It's probably safe to say there's not as much of that typical synthesizer, organ-like keyboard work, if you know what I mean, and a lot more distortion. However, Jordan does some really astounding keyboard work with a distorted, guitar-like keyboard sound. If you're not familiar to this type of keyboarding, you'll probably think it's a guitar, like I did, but really it's just Jordan kicking a**. Seriously, great stuff. The rest of the instruments and vocals are great too. My favorites as of now are "Endless Sacrifice" because of that really great instrumental section which in my opinion has two of the best guitar solos John as ever played as well as one of the best dual solos Jordan and John have ever played; and "In The Name of God" because it has that "epic" feel I wish I could hear more of (in metal in general). The closing part where James goes, "In the name of Gah-aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahd/In the name of Gah-ah-aaaaahd!" is powerful and soaring and one of the best vocal lines I've ever heard from them and is the best part of the song. I find myself rewinding and listening to that part over and over because it gets me so hard.
Well, anyway, this is a heavy Dream Theater album with a lot of good stuff. It's not a repeat of "Images & Words" and "Metropolis Part 2: Scenes From a Memory" so spare me the tears. I don't know if it's better than their earlier albums, which have a lot to do with personal preference as Dream Theater generally releases quality albums and there's so much to examine in all of them. However, I think it's one of Dream Theater's better albums and definitely worth the buy. It may not be perfect but that doesn't mean it's worth the unfair, crap rating people are giving it.
One Hott Album!!.......2007-05-25
Dream Theater was introduced to me through the group Savatage and Trans-Siberian Orchestra. ( I'm a heavy fan of both groups ) I also listen to other groups such as Genesis,Kansas,Yes,ELO,Rush and the like. After putting this album on and listening to it several times,I could hear traces of those other groups in different parts of the recording. I give it a 5 star here because the drummer really shines here - ( ok,I'm a drummer for over 30+ yrs.) In a nut shell, this recording is not only a first for me,but one that will be in my liabary for along while!!
Go get ahold of this recording if you like your music loud, fun and strong --- you will wide up with more than a grin on your face as this album "lets it all hang loose!" :-)
Enjoy!!!
Blows Away All Other Metal Posers.......2007-05-17
I thought I'd post a review for the non-Dream-Theater-fan. I don't qualify for that title anymore since over the past year or so I've gone from complete DT ignorance to DT nutcase.
With all that said, if you're like I was several months ago: wondering about the large catalog of DT offerings and not knowing where to start, AND if you really enjoy wild, heavy, monstrous guitar tone - bordering on some of the extremely heavy industrial or metalcore type of stuff, then THIS is the album to start with.
Then - once you listen to a couple of Petrucci's solos on this thing, you're sure to go buy the rest of their albums, because he's popping off the same kind of completely mind-blowing solos on nearly every song on every album... it's just that on this one he really has a grinding, chunky rhythm track on most every tune, and they really went out of their way to play metal.
At the same time it is extremely progressive, so I caution metalcore and industrial fans: if you become bored with your collection after taking in the complexities of Dream Theater... don't say you weren't warned: this band plays stuff twice as complex as anything you've heard before, and frankly that can include Vai, Gilbert, whoever... nobody goes to the Nth degree the way this band does: the skill level of everybody, not just the guitar player, is so over the top, you're hearing new nuances everywhere even after many, many listenings. (And note how the real DT afficianados are ripping this album for not being progressive enough... so give it a listen, and then imagine how mind-bending the rest of their catalog is).
One of the greatest heavy rock albums of all time!.......2007-05-15
For fans familiar with Dream Theater, nothing needs to be said about the musicianship. For new fans, it helps to listen to a song at least 5 to 10 times before passing judgement. The songs have so much depth that a listener cannot grasp it all with a single listen. I'm a guitar guy, John Petrucci is the most skilled rock guitar player in the world IMHO. Mike Portnoy's percussion on this album is mind boggling. Not just technical, but really accessible and interesting. This album, along with Octavarium, DT displays a new level of polish with their song writing that really appeals to my ear. Buy this album, listen to it ten times, and prepare to become a new obsessive Dream Theater fan.

Customer Reviews:
The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26
I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.
Please buy it.
A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Album Description
Michael Harris and manager John Purdom had the collective vision of a progressive rock band some years ago. Through an ad on the internet, Michael teamed up with Ted Leonard, the great vocalist of the US band Enchant. After Michael and Ted spent quite some time crafting and demoing the material, they then united with the rhythm section of Haji's Kitchen and Outworld keyboardist Bobby Williamson to form Thought Chamber and record their debut album Angular Perceptions, an album full of catchy melodies and outstanding musicianship.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing and unique.......2007-07-29
Great prog with nice dashes of jazz here and there. Tasteful guitar solos and interplay between guitar and keys.
It also continues to surprise me about how much Ted sounds like John Elephante from Kansas.
Somewhat unique sound for right now.......2007-07-23
I bought this solely off the clips here on Amazon not knowing anything about the background of the band. It hasn't left my playlist since I got it. While I'm a fan overall of progressive music, I tend to gravitate more to great songwriting and execution (Porcupine Tree) over great 'shredding' (Dream Theater). Their sound and style feels somewhat timeless with an underlying homage to bands like Kansas, Yes, and Genesis while still maintaining a more modern heaviness that appeals to fans today. As far as first efforts go, you won't find many this good (which hopefully bodes well for their future).
As good as the album is, I give it 4 stars instead of 5 only because I sense they have an even better album ahead of them if they put in the work. I only hope they keep all their "side projects" where they belong (on the side) and keep focus on a potentially great band.
Tired of endlessly waiting for a new Kansas release??!?.......2007-07-11
This is great stuff from a band that features the outstanding vocal talents of Enchant's Ted Leonard. I'm really impressed with their Kansas approach to the music. I especially like tracks 7 and 8. So, if you tired of all the compilations that Kansas has to offer and you can't wait for the new Proto Kaw, check this one out. You will be happy that you did. This has to be one of the top releases of 2007! Thanks Mr. Zucker.
Interesting combination.......2007-06-30
Ted Leonard is singing for this super group. The musicians are great and it is very progressive. The only reason I gave it a 4 star rating is because sometimes trying to prove one is a great musician can be done other ways instead of going at a supersonic speed. There are some jazz elements very present and I don't particulalary like that combo. However,if done right, the results are good.
This proves that there is still inventivenes.I feel that Enchant should have been going towards this field. There are elements of fusion, metal, prog and power metal all together.
Technically Sound.......2007-06-18
There's no doubt this group is technically phenominal. The guitar playing is amazing (absolutely amazing!) and the vocals are soaring. Unfortunately, the songs are not quite up to par with the musicianship: tons of technical wizardy overpowers emotion and message. Great promise, not yet achieved.

Good, but my least favorite of their latter-day albums.......2007-06-22
Death's career can be split into two eras: the stuff before Human and the stuff since. Although I enjoyed their early albums, I must say that I have a strong preference for their later material. Their unique style of technical progressive death metal is simply fascinating and Chuck is one of the best vocalists in death metal.
This album has all of the elements of their other newer albums. Like usual, it works. However, I just felt it fell just a little short of the previous album, "Human", which is simply a masterpiece. I also felt that the next album "Symbolic" and its followup "The Sound of Perseverance" (their best album, IMHO) were also a little bit better. The vocals are not quite as powerful as on "Symbolic" or "The Sound of Perseverence" (their was a distinct change in vocal style between this one and "Symbolic"), and the guitarwork, though impressive on a technical level, isn't quite as fascinating as it was on "Human".
I don't mean to sound negative. I do very much like this album. If I were to compare it to the average death metal release by some other band, the review would have a stronger tone of praise. However, in comparison with Death's best albums, it's falls short though just by a little bit. Yet I still like it more than their pre-Human albums (none of which are bad).
If you're interested in death metal then you should definitely own this album, but I suggest picking up "The Sound of Perseverance", "Human", and "Symbolic" first, in that order.
Best album of 1993, by far........2006-09-05
Its really hard for me to decide which Death album is my favorite, as they're all so freakin' great, and this one is no different. Unlike "Symbolic" and "SOP," "Individual Thought Patterns" has the progressive sound of those albums but with vocals similar to "Scream Bloody Gore" and "Leprosy." This is no problem to me as I seem to get the best of both worlds here. However, unlike Death's first two albums, Chuck's songwriting has greatly matured (same with the other albums "Spiritual Healing" and "Human"). The lineup is different, as usual, but Chuck always hires grade A musicians. Mercyful Fate's Andy LaRocque does killer guitar work alongside Chuck, Steve Digiorgio's basslines are solid and completely audible, and Gene Hoglan is certainly no slouch behind the kit. With these four fine musicians, NOTHING went wrong in this album.
There's no skipping necessary in this album, but the best are "Overactive Imagination," "Jealousy," "Trapped in a Corner," and "The Philosopher." Its 40 minutes long, but you can listen to it all the way through completely satisfied.
Get this with every other Death album.
Easily Their Best?.......2006-09-04
This is the fourth Death album I bought after SOP, Symbolic, and Human. It is fantastically better than these other three. Despite its less than ideal production, all of these songs are killer. I have always heard that a great quality of Death was that people could not agree on their best album. I still struggle with it, but this one probably gets the most playing time. The addition of Hoglan and LaRoque is amazing. This album was also included in Guitar World's 20 Greatest Guitar Metal albums, for good reason. Just take one listen to 'Trapped In A Corner', the solos are out of this world. I love Laroque and his work, but the transition from his solo to Chuck's is like a ten year old to a grown man. Chuck shows him how it is DONE. Aside from that song all the others on here are nearly flawless. DiGiorgio's bass is all over the place and Hoglan shows a WIDE (pun intended) array of tempos and fills. it is interesting to think that Sean Reinart (Cynic) was supposed to play on this album, but couldn't due to record label conflicts (stupid labels). The only sorespot I have with this album is 'The Philosopher' This is probably their most popular and famous, but for me it just sounds like a well-crafted single. I can't believe that Chuck was writing a song to play on car commercials or anything. But it lacks the complexity of the other songs on the album. Just my opinion, but the song is still balls-to-the-walls solid. Do yourself a HUGE (Gene Hoglan, anyone? Just Kidding) favor and pick it up!!!!!
about time..........2006-08-16
i discovered this.always liked the philospher.the rest of the cd smokes.great musicianship.why do all the great ones have to die early? chuck r.i.p.
Strange.............2006-08-01
I just got this 2 days ago, and as it is it seems like a relatively solid album. I find it to be a bit too brainy sometimes (Overactive Imagination.) But when it hits the mark, the sound is undefinable. Death is unquestionably one of the best if not THE best death metal band to ever exist. This is a notch more progressive than Human, and the addition of Andy LaRocque and his killer tone and sense of melody makes for great solos. Overall good so far, as its already starting to grow on me. Buy it if your a Death fan. LET THE METAL FLOW!

not terrible.......2007-05-24
This cd is just ok. A lot of the songs sound the same, and the guitar sounds very grungy. If you are a fan of blindside's later stuff you will hate this album. I like when blindside mixes the screaming with melodic vocals. This album has none of that, it's all screaming.
Wow, I never knew until now what I was missing!!!.......2006-03-19
This album is simply incredible. I already had the three newest Blindside albums and then I heard them play "King of the Closet" live and decided to check this album out. Oh my gosh, now I'm daily catching up on the time I missed in the past not having this album. It totally rocks!!!
Blindside's landmark album.......2005-08-11
Firstly, Amazon has the incorrect tracklisting. [Phatbat 1303] is actually the last song, Knocking on another door, sunrise, from stone to backbone, and all you need is are moved up on the tracklisting accordingly
I have been a fan of blindside for seven years now. The first time I heard Vow of Silence solidified their place in my collection forever. Having recently purchased The Great Depression, it's interesting to see their evolution as a band and a creative force.
This album, however, blows your hair back accordingly. It's sweedish hardcore at it's finest and most powerful. Expect this to be in the hardcore cannon for years to come.
This album brings it..........2005-08-01
Before I start, I'd like to give a bit a background about how I got a hold of this album.
Usually I listen to punk/emo/emocore stuff but after seeing this album on amazon being compared to numerous hardcore and screamo artists, I decided that it was time I checked this band out. I went to best buy and got this for 10 bucks... (a steal)
I seriously had no idea what I was buying, I had just seen a lot of people recommend it that had my tastes. So I threw caution to the wind.
At first listen, I began to think I had purchased a cheap alternative rock/metal cd... Something I hate.
However, I listened a couple more times and realized that this was actually hardcore/metal. This band sounds like afi meets post-hardcore alternative! Cool!
Anyway, if you like hardcore/screamo/metal, or just good rock...go pick this one up. It's impressive.
Complete Waste Of Time.......2005-07-21
Review by Tyler Wagnon:
Ehhh. These reissues bring back a lot of memories, but mostly of stuff I would like to forget. Things like middle school.
Blindside were part of the explosion of heavy Christian bands in the mid to late 90's and were one of the few to have a bit of a nu-metal tinge to their sound. Needless to say, the sound on these albums are dated and honestly, Blindside are so far past any relevance in heavy music these days that these are really a waste of time and energy.
There are a few decent tracks here and there, but most of the material is just... boring, completely lackluster, and the nu-etal edge is frankly horrible. Perhaps their major label signing had something to do with the reissues, but they are pretty much pointless.

Another waste.......2007-02-28
The vocals are mediocre. They've been done to death. Another scream for no reason then sing. How can you feel any emotion attached to a song when the screams aren't synched up to anything meaningful?
Aside from that, the guitar was ho-hum. Forget the vocals for a minute, they can sing pretty well for a couple of songs. Try and block out all the vocals...what do you hear? I hear mediocrity. There is nothing new to the music itself. While trying to make the guitars sound heavy, they have instead regressed into mind-numbingly simple.
Blah, I say! BLAH!
I'm a vampire.......2004-10-31
This is the first Blindside CD I heard, and thinking since this one was sooo good, I bought the "Silence" and was disappointed. Despite what other people say on reviews of their other CD's, this CD is REALLY GOOD. I think Nara is the song that he sings in Swedish, towarsds the end, the CD gets mellow, but a very good kind of mellow. When I get money, I want to own this CD again. King of the Closet was an instant fave of mine, I loved the lyrics.
A mind crushed by thought..........2004-09-28
I had been told that this, along with their self-titled, were Blindside's best albums, so I bought them. I haven't heard their new stuff yet, but after listening to this and the ST I doubt they could do much better without getting repetitive. A Thought starts out strong with 'Vow of Silence' and never stops. 'King of the Closet' is easily the best song on the album, with an awesome vocal/screaming solo intro. It seems hard to listen to the whole album all the way through, though I'm not sure why. All in all a good album, but I'd still recommend the ST over it.
if it were possible i would this album 10 stars.......2004-09-07
By far this album is in my opinion is the best album BLINSIDE has releases yet, silence, and about a burning fire are great albums but this album does not shows blindside at its finest the music it EXCELLENT. Musical arragments are like none other.Finding a decent christian rock band is hard (thank GOD 4 project 86 and DEMON HUNTER)most of them sound them same. But BLINDSIDE is uncomparable to any other christian Rock band i've have yet to hear. the closest band i would say reminds me of them musically wise would be S.O.A.D. (system of a down) and even then i would rather listen to " A thought crushed my mind"
BLINDSIDE ROCKS.......2004-06-18
I think That Blindside is an excelent band. I saw them live and imediatly bought there cd. If you like Rock/Metal/Christan then this is a band for you. I would also recomend the cd Silence. This would be a good Christmas gift for a rocker :)

Second consecutive masterwork.......2006-03-08
Classic mixture of Black Umbrella pop-rock introspection with Radiohead, Flaming Lips and Rush-style prog leanings. Essential for anyone who enjoyed all of Thought Industry's previous albums including Black Umbrella enough to stay onboard once they dropped the metal element (a process that really started way back on Outer Space anyway). Black Umbrella might have had more songs that jumped out at you on first listen... this is more of a "big acheivement from beginning to end" type album, 16 great songs, 70+minutes. Ignore at your own risk if you're already an avid listener of earlier TI.
Lush progressive alt-rock from the masters of tech-metal.......2004-09-09
Thought Industry started off in the early 90's as a bizarre tech-metal band incorporating diverse non-metal influences. Their sound evolved over several releases and finally culminated on this 2001 release, their swansong, as a potent blend of alt-rock, indie, prog and a certain lingering intangible metal aesthetic. "Short Wave on a Cold Day" is a lush, cerebral, and diverse offering that is now quite hard to find. Their label, Metal Blade, apparently did not know how to market music like this and promptly deleted the album from their catalogue within a year of its release. It's a tragedy, because this album should have been huge. The band is now inactive, but has left us with a legacy of challenging and forward-thinking music.
"Short Wave on a Cold Day" is an album that should appeal to a broad cross-section of music afficianados. It's firmly within the alt-rock/indie vein; but it also has a certain metal aesthetic lingering that should appeal to the more open-minded fans of that genre. I think it's in the instrumental prowess displayed on this disc.
This album has a very cohesive sound and a consistancy of material throughout. The main adjective that comes to mind is "lush". It's one of those dreamy, beautiful albums that can really take you on a journey. Each song has a hook, yet is sufficiently challenging to prevent mass accessibility. It's truly an album you can sink your teeth into, and discover new layers of aural bliss upon each listen.
The songs are deceptively complex and display an instrumental proficiency uncommon to this type of music. The vocalist has a pleasantly light voice and is not shy about using falsetto. The guitar is quite textural, the bass quite thick and expansive, the drums providing shimmering cymbalscapes, and a myriad of electronics and keyboards softening the edges and creating dense layers of cloudmusic that goes on for miles. The lyrics are some sort of esoteric poetry. I feel watery, wintry, and airy when I listen to this album. It's a musical experience like no other.
Highlights include the oceanic, frosty "Tall Ships on the Rocks"; the acoustic lament of "Lovers in Flames" and the curiously dark "Hello, Murder".
Each Thought Industry album is drastically different, but each is fantastic. I give the highest recommendation to their entire catalogue.
Hope this isn't the last act of the TI boyz.......2003-06-13
This CD marks an interesting sound that doesn't exist in music today. Some would argue that that's for a good reason. I would argue them and run if it came to blows. But nonetheless, I would argue it verbally for hours on end if given the chance (unless of course, I had something better to do). This band throws all the rules out the window and creates some of the most unique hard rock you will ever hear. I prefer their debut, "Songs For Insects" but this CD reiterates their dedication to the bizarre and gives a big "F You" to what is expected. God love 'em!
It's freezing; I'm burning up........2001-12-11
Overall this should (and will) be hailed as Thought Industry's crowning achievement. It skirts the edge of both their worlds, the manic insanity and stream of conscious lyricism of their first three records, as well as the simple arrangement beauty and stark, personally bitter prose of 1997's Black Umbrella. All the while maintaining that indescribable left-field space rock sound that Thought Industry has either pioneered or compiled (re: stolen) from so many different bands that it is all but impossible to generate a list of contemporaries.
The pinnacle point of the record comes about halfway through with "Lovers in Flames." Upon first inspection, a very simple acoustic track with the most scattered lyrics since "Blistered Text and Bleeding Pens" from '93's Songs For Insects. Subsequent listens expose rolling bass lines and nifty acoustic interplay that add immeasurable depth to terrifically simple chord progressions. Oberlin also tackles himself for the first time on the record, speaking of the "cancer reeds in his brain." In the song (and I guess in life) Brent is "okay, you know [he's] okay", so what does he do? He self-destructs with a petulant lover, strapping his "forehead to a landmine" and "run[ning] into a wall."
My favorite band has just released what might soon become my favorite record. Already the best of 2001.
DT
Short Wave.......2001-10-09
Having been first introduced to Thought Industry during the Outer Space era...I wasn't quite sure what to expect with this album. And in fact, put off buying it for a few weeks, something i'd never done with umbrella or good deeds. Nevertheless i'm quite satisfied with this album, although it took quite a while to get used to. Brent, as always, writes his songs like what they are, poetry set to music. I greatly miss his classic "howl from hell" voice. But hey I can't say i'd be quite the fan of The Who that I am, if they had continued to milk the formula for "My generation". My best advice is to know what you're getting into with the album. If you're still a diehard fan of the powermetal T.I. just let this one slide. Even musicians grow up after all.

Weird..........2006-06-30
I was given this CD being told it was Death Metal, which I am an avid fan of. Well, it wasn't death metal, but it was something very different. Its thrash/punk/progressive rock,- it's weird. The songs are quirky and frantic, as in time changes are very abundant. It's an interesting listen and definitley weorth your time, I suppose.
the best metal album ever.......2005-07-29
i bought this album on ebay for .01(its a shame i was able to to that because the band deserves much better than they ever got). it was the best one cent i will have EVER spent.this band is so different from all other i have heard. As far as i can tell they arent ripping any one off. Thought industry was proof that origanallity truely is best but the masses seen to beleave different. I own Songs and Mods carve the pig, but i like this one much more. Mods is confusing but were funny at parts. In both albums Brent Oberlin is absolutely insane. his base work is far supirior to primus's basist(i dont know who he is but he good.) my favorite tracks are songs for insects and daughter mobius both incredible wanderings into the weird and different. The album as a whole is great. I rank this album up with Dream Theater's Awake and Course of Empire's Telepathic Last Words. Oh and by the way they incresed the madjesty of their album by using Dali for their cover art.DALI IS THE BEST. but dont buy this album if you like alt metal cause alt metal is mainstream and unoriginal... your immune system will be weakened and vulnerable to this albums majesty. the originallity will overwhelm you and send you into a coma
This one is a little hard to gut but it's great.......2004-05-02
The debut of all debuts has not been so crazy filled with time signatures and tempo changes it's mixes so many styles of music from punk to metal to alternative to prog in there own way amazing pick it up if your openminded to music if not don't bother you won't get it.
Debut of the greatest Metal Band you noone ever heard.......2003-06-13
I first heard this when Thought Industry was getting a little airplay on 92.3 K-Rock in NYC. The album's opener, 3rd Eye, is deceptively straight forward and then, all of the sudden, the remaining 9 songs come at you from every direction in a relentless hail storm of odd time signatures, shouted lyrics and machine like sound. This CD will be hard to listen to at first, make no bones of that. But once you get through the first listen and begin to understand and enjoy it, you will crave it like you do Swiss Cheese. It smells funny, tastes pungent but there are times when nothing else will do. Then, you will crave their other CDs and be equally disturbed. They too will become like some of your oldest friends: irritating and difficult to understand but something forces you to pick them up and listen to what they have to say. Buy this CD now. You won't be disappointed. You may be dream of odd dark things afterwards, but you certainly will enjoy your purchase.
Difficult to find, but worth it you do.......2000-12-27
This is a difficult album to describe, but I'll try anyway. If you take the instrumental sophistication of progressive rock, the confrontational political stance of punk, the agression of heavy metal, and the weirdness of alternative you may come up with some that doesn't sound too far from SFI. Highly recommended for those who like stuff Dream Theater, Watchtower, Spiral Architect, Cynic, and other intellectual and technical bands.

Most underrated bands ever.......2006-02-25
This was the first album of theirs that I ever bought. I got it on suggestion. When I first heard it I thought "Well I just wasted my money". So I put it away. But then it started popping in my head. So I had to bring it out. Next thing I knew, this CD didn't leave my player. I had to have every album. This is one of the best rock albums I have ever heard. And they became one of my top 5 bands of all time. Every album is great, even if they are totally different from each other. Sad they are gone. But this album is still my favorite. A totally different sound that just grows on you. Amazingly different sounds through the entire album.
This probably is the most musical friendly of the frist 3.......2004-05-02
Well this is to be the last thought album with any metal backing behind it, but what a way to go this seems to be alternative meets metal not as progressive as the first 2 but still an intense listen like i said not for the faint of heart i've played for most of friends and i get mixed reviews from it check it out for yourself.
lyrics for serious drinkers.......2002-02-19
Brent Oberlin and his troupe were at full strength on this release and it shows. The additions of bassist Herb Ledbetter and drummer Jared Bryant added a missing piece to what was missing from Songs for Insects and Mods. This was also the last recording to feature guitarist/keyboardist Chris Lee and he left his mark on the pounding score of Dante Dangling from a Noose. This was a crowning victory for this struggling band of musical geniuses and even though every one of their recordings is nothing short of ear candy, they have not equalled this.

It gets 4 stars because at heart, it is still Thought Industry, but on this, their 3rd album, something is clearly missing. I mean, other than the mandatory Salvador Dali cover art (and that absence is bad enough!) One is forced to assume that it is Dustin Donaldson, the former drummer who parted with the band after Mods Carve the Pig. Apparently he lent a great deal to the style of Thought Industry's sound, because the tracks that comprise "Outer Space" just aren't quite at the same level as the tracks that made up the first two albums. But Oberlin is still here, with his thesaurus, dictionary, and a pile of backissues of The Nation on hand. Which means, for those unfamiliar with TI, that the lyrics are still quite an adventure. The music is still highly unique, and there are even a few selections here that qualify as Thought Industry classics in their own way. But it is not the place to begin with this band.
Intelligence, daring, and zero fear of partial deafness.......1999-03-16
Relative to 1993's MODS CARVE THE PIG, OUTER SPACE is a noticeable step towards the mainstream for Thought Industry. Relative to anything else, it's a dizzyingly loud, convoluted, intimidating slab of noise, which means it's still great. It might even be a step forward. Thought Industry are still a thrash band, but this time they bother to include Metallica-like power chords ("the Squid", "Fairy", "I'm Jack Frost Junior", "Soot On The Radio" if you don't mind the lurching 5/4 time), and the loosest hints of what, in a completely different context, could be synth-pop ("Soot" again, "Watercolour Gray", "Sharron Sours").The lyrics, too, have taken a turn towards complete sentences and paragraphs, such as the reflection on being newly dead: "Liquid floats and conspires. One chance to lose. The cherry syrup provides a line. It's funny how you can't snore". Or "Miasma will befriend like a well-oiled palm. The grass is so green. The grass is so clean". Even the jokes, which aren't a new feature, can be understood without a lyric sheet and close study for once, from "D.I.Y. Tranquilizers"'s self-explanatory yowl of "I DON'T FEEL TRANQUIL!!!!!" to the passionate rant ingeniously entitled "Fruitcake and Cider": "I decided to make a trip to Binder Park Zoo. I threw letters in the cages saying 'I know who you are. Tell God to please leave me alone'. I can't watch. I can't think. The cockroaches in my cupboard are always smiling at me when I reach for the corned beef... everyone knows pets are just camcorders for God (at least the NRA believes me)". It's still frighteningly intelligent music, and for people who can't stand loud, slashing guitars, the "ly intelligent" suffix wasn't necessary. It still rewards many repeats, and many re-reads. But this time, it'll make 'em smile if you sing along.
