Album Description

Italian six-piece Lacuna Coil are one of the hardest working & rapidly progressing gothic metal outfit of our times. Their dual-vocal approach featuring the heavenly voice of Cristina Scabbia juxtaposed with the harsh style of Andrea Ferro will appeal to fans of The Gathering, Theatre Of Tragedy & Nightwish. Unleashed Memories also includes last year's mini-CD, 'Halflife', as a bonus. Bonus tracks, 'Halflife', 'Trance Awake', 'Senzafine', 'Hyperfast', & 'Stars'. Century Media. 2001.

4 out of 5 stars Lacuna Coil - Sophmore Effort Another Good One.......2007-07-27

The bands second full length album finds Lacuna Coil refining their sound a bit with Christina Scabbia's incredible vocals leading the way. I think this one is on a par with their debut disc. The songs are all strong although there is nothing that really blows me away. Some of the lyrics and ideas on this one are slightly overused and the band still keeps to a fairly rigid formula. The band do two tracks on this disc in their native Italian and both are really good songs. This is a solid 4 star release an overall I like it. I still wish the band would take a few more chances with their music, but this is another solid release from the band.

5 out of 5 stars This cd is AMAZING! .......2007-06-07

This is Lacuna Coil's best cd. The newer fans that discovered them from Comalies and Karmacode wont appreciate this cd. This cd isnt as polished and radio friendly as their newer cds. Cristina's voice is soo powerful and her lyrics pierce your soul. All the choruses are soo full of emotion. Not a single bad song on this cd. My favorites are: To Live is to Hide, Cold Heritage, Distant Sun, 1.19, Wave of Anguish, Half Life, and Stars. This cd needs multiple listens in order for it to fully grab you.

3 out of 5 stars Great Vocals with Metal- Note Worthy Band.......2007-05-23

If you like Evanescence, and female led metal, then you will probably like Lacuna Coil. I stumbled on this band on an internet radio site featuring metal bands, and was immediately interested. I ordered Unleashed Memories the same day and just finished listening it to twice through. I generally believe you should listen a few times before writing a review, but this album immediately strikes you.

This band has much of what I love in rock music, metal with strong and varied vocals, infused electronica and lots of tempo changes. There are 2 vocalists on this album, and although there isn't much overlapping of the 2 voices, they can be heard at times together complimenting each other. Why more bands don't use multiple overlapping vocals, I don't know, but this is what makes this band special. 3 stars only because I think some of the rhythms could be just a bit more interesting and varied and I just didn't get enough of the heavy metal sounds. There really is nothing groundbreaking here. The vocals are also a bit too blended for my taste, Cristina's voice, although beautiful has a new agey quality and almost sounds like Enya fronting a rock band.

Most of the tracks have metal influences, but there isn't very much of the heavy thrashing guitar riffs. Some might find this more attractive because the pummeling sounds tend to drown out Cristina's beautiful voice. I personally would appreciate more metal in what is being labeled a power metal band, and a bit less of the harmonious vocals and symphonic ambient sounds that pervade some of the tracks. Don't let me mislead you here, this album is not soft rock, it is edgier and you probably need to be a hard rock fan to really enjoy it.

Note there are 15 tracks on this CD if you have the version with the bonus EP tracks. "Sensafine" is repeated in the EP additions and both tracks are in Italian and is one of the better songs as the 2 vocals are more integrated with the guitar riffs. All of the remaining tracks are in English. Track 2, "To Live is to Hide" features both vocalists with some overlap and it's the kind of song you might expect to hear on mainstream radio. Track 5, "When a Dead Man Walks"' seems to be an attempt at stronger rock, but again the vocal harmonies sound at times like Abba. Even the male vocals are too watered down to make a believable metal song. In track 6 "1.19", Andrea the male vocalist, gets in some screaming and harsher vocals but they are short lived. This is however one of the heavier tracks and has a nice guitar section about midway through.

I will purchase their 2006 album Karmacode, which actually gets a better review on [...]. This CD is good to have in your collection, but not one of those albums that you can listen too a hundred times and just keep wanting more.

Not much hit material here even if you get the extended version with
the halflife ep included. Check it out if you can get it cheap and

1 out of 5 stars Not too good..........2007-03-02

I'm bemused as to why almost everyone put a good review on this CD. Cristina's vocals are probably the worst I've heard in any other LC album. Most of the time it just sounds like she wants to get the damn CD over with. The lyrics are ridiculous in some spots, such as when Cristina sings the line "I'm a loser" five monontonous times, and just the overall album doesn't vary much at all. All the songs sound alike. This album let me down.

    4 out of 5 stars Excellent atmo/prog.......2006-12-04

This material is very atmospheric, complex and open minded. Excellent album! I love everything about it, except for the drums. In fact, there are no drums, but a rhythm machine. I must say though that the fake drums are very well programmed. If the drums were really played, I would give it 8 stars instead of 4.

Memories are one of the best ballads I have heard in years. The touching lyrics and graceful melody is only superceded by the elegance of this young ladies voice.
However do not let this sweeping emotional journey fool you into thinking that Within Temptation is a boring salad eating band. These metal rockers not only put Evanescence to shame but the level of production and musicianship is astounding with all the glorious choral accents and beautifully orchestrated metal manna to fill up all lovers of rock and classical music in one tasty meal. So accessible are they that I'm stunned they are not feeding the America's. This band with the right exposure would top all the charts and gives a whole lot of everything anybody searching for fresh food to feed their musical needs could want.

5 out of 5 stars Lacuna Coil, what Evanescence only dreamed of being.......2006-10-14

Lacuna Coil have a vibe about them that define musicians giving their all to make contact with their listeners. The level of musicianship is understandably high and mature, I hear no overplaying on this album yet when you hear a guitar solo it rips and shreds but fits with the ideal or emotion of the song, and fit so nicely it does! I have to say though, I picked Unleashed Memories up in December of 2005 in a Hot Topic store, this one claims to be an import that contains those songs as if they don't appear anywhere else and ask for a higher price. I know mine isn't an Japanese import but does have those songs!

5 out of 5 stars One of these days.......2006-01-23

Yes, one of these days you're going to hear a song on the radio and you're going to wonder who made that song. then a day or two later you'll hear it again and you'll say to yourself, Wow I really like that song, I wonder who made it. Well their's a good chance it's Heaven's a Lie by Lacuna Coil, from their current album Comalies.

So why am I reviewing Unleashed Memories? Why not, if you buy any Lacuna Coil album, you can't lose. They're all five star but if you're interested I've already reviewed Comalies and In a Reverie. Lacuna Coil is one of the few bands around that don't / can't improve on each new album. All their albums are superlative.

Lacuna Coil's strongpoint is the lovely sultry singer named Cristina Scabbia. She is joined in the singing duties by the clean male vocals of Andrea Ferro. Their music, which has been classified as Gothic Metal, actually has a slight progressive edge to it. If their is any negative to Lacuna Coil's music, it might be a lack of diversification. They rarely do ballads and they never (that I can recall) play faster than a medium slow to medium tempo. Although each song can stand on it's own, it is a homogenous sound that may sound a little redundant to some listeners.

Unleashed Memories is Lacuna Coil's second full-length album. It successfully combines the backbone of metal with the ethereal trappings of goth. This special-edition release includes the band's Halflife EP as an added bonus and is quite a value with fifteen top notch songs clocking in at in excess of seventy minutes. Here is a description of my favorite songs:

"Purify" one of Lacuna Coil's few ballads is one of my favorite of all Lacuna Coil songs. This an inspiring song both musically and lyrically about one who has overcame dejection and depression and become reborn. The music is a rock ballad with a very catchy melody and Cristina singing double on the glorious choruses.

"When a Dead Man Walks" is a medium slow number that has a slight variation in tempo. The verses are sung by Christina but the speeded up choruses belong to Andrea. As the title implies the song is about someone sentenced or about to be sentenced to die.

"Cold Heritage" is another medium paced song of dual intensities, as with most songs, highlighting Cristina's remarkable talent. Cold Heritage is apparently about a woman who is unable to have normal feelings and reciprocate her lover's love and is sung entirely by Christina.

          Conclusion

This band, which hails from Milan Italy, is in a class by itself and and would most likely appeal to fans of Evanescence, Garbage or even Poe. With eleven four and a half to five stars songs, it is easily one of the best Femme Metal values available.

          5 out of 5 stars pleasant surprise.......2005-11-04

I didnt expect the album to be this good. I liked comalies and thought it would be pretty much the same. but I was blown away by cristinas vocals. she makes the band so much bigger than it could be without her, I hope they dont breakup, because their future is very bright.all the band members complement each other. I thought some melodies were repetitious, but they will refine their sound and make it big. I am upset that 'halflife' wasnt released in america. we missed out in something beautiful. my favorite cd. the tunes run through your head for days after, and a couple are works of art I am not worthy of.

          4 out of 5 stars Maturity.......2005-04-13

Lacuna Coil does some amazing work in this album. The modes used to express the lyrics work amazingly with Cristina Scabbia's voice, the rough edged Andrea Ferro's voice backs her up with the ferocity the guitars imply, and the two guitar solos on tracks 5 and 6 will make you wish you were playing along. In a response to a previous reviewer, it does seem to be a trend that Nightwish fans like the Coil, but they are two very different bands. Lacuna Coil has far less of a symphonic side, and the voices are completely different. Ferro is a baritone, and Scabbia is an alto, as opposed to a "metal tenor" and an operatic soprano. Fans of Evanescence might find Coil a bit less accessible, but if they take the time to listen to Senzafine, and especially the Half Life version with Trance Awake leading into it, I think they'll find a wonderful surprise in Lacuna Coil. I gave this CD four stars for the specific reason that by the end of the Unleashed Memories section of the CD, it begins to sound like they're reaching for melodic ideas a bit. I notice if I listen from start to track 9, I feel like I'm hearing recycled material. Tracks 11-15 are a fresh start, so keep that in mind, and go buy this thing. You won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Lacuna Coil Rocks.......2004-10-02

I often see, "If you like the Coil, you will like Nightwish"...Lacuna Coil Rocks! They are a much more polished band than Nightwish. I just read Rolling Stone this month in Sept 04 indicating that Lacuna Coil is in the top 10 new bands to watch - put them at the top! Thanks for turning me onto these guys Aaron!!! I cannot get enough - highly recommend! Distant Sun, Wave of Anguish and Heir of a Dying Die are worth the price of this disk alone - their albums really flow as a related work and do not come across disconnected from one song to the next - you will enjoy all of it. If you were to try one Coil album to see if you like them you can't go wrong with this one.
