Album Description
The band recorded Death Cult Armageddon with a full-blown orchestra, this time with a forty-eight piece orchestra from Prague. Returning with manic axe-man Galder (founder/mastermind of Old Man's Child) and arguably metal's finest skinsman, Nick Barker (Cradle Of Filth, Old Man's Child), both of whom joined the band on Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia, Dimmu Borgir continue on the path with their all-star line-up towards domination! Nuclear Blast. 2003.

Not Bad.......2007-07-11
I like this type of music, so I can't give it a bad rating just on that fact alone. However, this particular CD is not up to the five star rating. There is no question these guys have a good thing going, but there is just something lacking.
When I listen to this CD, a lot of the time I am reminded of Cradle of Filth, and even some Borknagar in spots. The playing is excellent and the vocals are not bad. However, after several listens, I cannot dig out any specific melody or riff that sticks with me. Another reviewer said the lyrics sucked so I read some of them. The lyrics are almost incomprehensible, the English ones anyway, but that is not a bad thing as I could care less. I love Finntroll and their lyrics are all in Swedish.
What it boils down to is that this is excellent music but the songs are not that memorable. What stands out is the musicianship, especially my favorite black metal drummer, Nicky Barker. The other musicians are super too, but they can only do so much to rise above the material they have to work with.
Overall, this is still a good CD, just not the best. I like it enough to try another one of their CD's one day, just to see if they can write more memorable stuff. I recommend this for symphonic black metal fans.
Here's the problem........2007-04-16
This to me is a "The Silent Force" ordeal (If any of you listen to Within Temptation you'll know what I mean. If not, here's a brief background: Within Temptation started off as a goth-esque, female fronted, metal band with some very rough beauty and the beastly vocals. Their second release, they cut the rough vocals and went solely with the angelic female vocals. This release was still far out of the mainstream block, though, and incorrporated a lot of unique material. Was it the best material? No. But unique nonetheless. Anyway, 4 years later, their 3rd release strolled along. It was entitled "The Silent Force". This time Within Temptation hired choirs and added more mainstream attributes, symphonic layouts, and entwined lots of orchestral effects. It was more mainstream than anything they did- and ironically one of their songs ended up in a movie trailer. Some people complained, some didnt. But in the end you're left with a beautiful sounding album that really is empty.)
So I relate "The Silent Force" to this album because Dimmu Borgir seemed to do almost the same thing. The vocals are far different from anything like "Enthrone Darkness Triumphant" and they added choirs and more symphonic sounds to create a great, yet more mainstream album. Unfortunately, this LP too, despite its incredible sound, doesnt have much personality. The lyrics, the choirs, the layouts- they're all meant to sound good but in this case are only for credibility.
Personally I can listen to it over and over without having much of a problem (besides getting a little bored) but I know some people have more of a problem with that than I do.
An Album Which Defies Any Genre Label.......2007-04-01
I picked up "Death Cult Armaggedon" a little over a year ago. In that time span I have listened to it on a more and more frequent basis. It is to the point now where I literally listen to at least part of it every single day. Instead of telling you about this song or that song, I will just tell you why this album is so incredibly beautiful (as if music this ferocious and intimidating could ever be described as such)...
It would be easy to label this as "black metal" or "death metal." But, that would be a great disservice to this masterpiece Dimmu Borgir have created. It is mind-blowing in its complexity, ingenuity and musicianship. This is an album created by a band with a vision and a determination which is hard to describe and even harder to fathom. An album as innovative as this is no happy accident. You can hear the effort Dimmu Borgir put into the recording of this record in every single second of sound.
There are no fillers here. There are no unplanned notes from any contributing instrument, voice, or effects. From the creepy intro to the three-part vocal harmonies to the eerily effective sound of a crow squawking, everything is exactly what it needs to be, where it needs to be. It all comes together and fits like pieces of an enormous, complex puzzle. I ask anyone to refer me to any piece of music anywhere that even remotely compares.
This is the album Pink Floyd would have produced if they were a black metal band...and they were composing a concept album focused on the doom and gloom of the impending apocalypse...and they were being held at gunpoint by Satan himself...and he's ordered them to create the most evil album any humans could ever possibly create.
I cannot imagine Dimmu Borgir ever being able to top themselves after this. I cannot imagine anyone ever creating anything like it ever again. All bands who could refer to their music as being "black metal" have been slammed upside their collective heads with a 12 ton brick of pure mayhem, creativity, fluidity, and cohesion. Dimmu Borgir didn't go back to the black metal drawing board. They burned the drawing board in the name of evil, leaving all others to stand around warming their hands, wondering "Where do we go from here?"
The best Dimmu Borgir.......2007-01-11
In my opinion this is the best album that Dimmu has put out. The orchestra is an awesome addition. The new album should be out in spring of 2007 and I hope that Dimmu builds on the foundation they laid on this release.
This is F***ing AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-09-14
This is my first Dimmu Borgir album and was kinda skeptical but I must say....this cd blew me away. DM does a good job making alot of the songs sound HUGE!! My favorite song is "Progenies of the great apocolypse" because it has fantastic orchestral parts throughout the song, machine gun blazing drums, and because it's not all about the guitars.Musitis really knows what he's doing. Every song on this cd is awesome and i rarely like every song on a cd. I just wish that they used Vortex's melodic vocals a bit more.

bloated and bold.......2005-10-01
Death Cult Armageddon is a big slick beast of an album. the production is crystal clear and the instruments sound sharp as a bag of new razor blades. in the process of using a full orchestra, Dimmu Borgir have created a dramatic musical landscape that contains many majestic moments of truly symphonic metal; but at the same time, the album seems to be reduced to a gimmick that only can only stretch but so far. i've never been terribly impressed with Dimmu to begin with, so maybe that clouds my judgement of this album. but their songs have never stuck with me and have always seemed like "black metal lite." in other words, a good package, but failing to deliver the heart, soul, and passion of truly inspired black metal. Dimmu seemed a little too contrived even before they decided to rock the orchestra; but now that they have the baton in hand, it all is a bit too much to bear. there are some pretty cool songs on here...track three "Lepers Among Us" and "For The World To Dictate Our Breath" all have some pretty good solid moments in them, but yet they fail to produce the kind of result that remains memorable (except for the fact that there are violins and french horns, etc. in the mix). track 6 "Blood Hunger Doctrine" is probably my favorite track on here. it's slow and contains a well balance of the orchestra and the distorted guitar. it works well because it sonds like the song was written before the orchestra idea came along, and the orchestration only adds some nice colour around the edges. i can't help but think how much better this album would have been if it contained a lot more blackened atmosphere and wicked hooks and less time trying to write these songs based around the orchestra. it's an interestring and bold step that Dimmu Borgir have made with Death Cult Armageddon; but it does not translate to an essential album.
