I am a huge fan of this band, but I will admit that when I first listened to this album I got a twinge of buyer's remorse. However, after listening to it a couple of times, this one has really grown on me. The songs are diverse and extremely catchy. There are a few tracks I'm still not a fan of, but overall I really like this album. If you are a fan of this band, I have no doubt you will enjoy it.

The Living End first album blew my mind away, so i was expecting to get blown by this one. But the album wasn't a clomplete let down theres a few good songs in here.

I've had this album ever since it first came out, but i havent written reviews until now. The Living End is one of the most overlooked and underrated bands out there today, and there is no excuse for this because theyre signed to a major label, Reprise. This is the same label that shoves Green Day and My Chemical Romance down your throat 24/7 but these guys barely get any promotion. The songwriting ability of this band is phenomenal, and they draw their influences from many places,punk, rockabilly, classic rock, but wind up sounding simply like a rock band, not a scatter-brained band striving to cram every influence they can into an album just for the sake of it. I would start naming the best songs, but then I'd be simply rewriting the entire tracklisting. If you want a band that has the potential to rejuvenate stagnant rock radio, then this is it.

To be honest, I never thought I was much of a punk/rock fan. This is not actually true, but only because lately I have unfortunately classed punk as the music (if it can be called that) that is played these days. I'm sure you know the bands i'm talking about...Simple Plan, Good Charlotte and so on...I happen to hate these bands with a passion. The Living End, however, are in a class of their own, and their music is the true definition of the genre 'punk rock'. Being an aussie myself, I've always had a certain like for any musicians born and bred down under, but a band like the Living End have earned their reputation regardless. These guys are absolutely amazing, in both their songwriting and musical talents. This is well demonstrated in one of their best efforts, 'Roll On'.

Chris Cheney can only be described as a genius on guitar, able to make the 3-piece band (unsusually small for the modern day) sound at times like a 5 or 6 piece. He almost deserves to be among the greats, such are his talents, not to mention his amazing singing capabilities. Scott Owen's driving double bass complement Cheney perfectly, and Andy Strachan's drums are solid to say the least (although perhaps not as masterful as their previous drummer, Travis Demsey).

On the whole, this is a must listen for any true rock, punk or metal fan; after all, my favourite band is Metallica, whose style of music couldn't differ more. The highlights of the album include the title track, Roll On, which is an absolute killer opener; Riot On Broadway, Carry Me Home and Don't Shut The Gate are also my favourites, although you may have your own opinions on each track. Recommended for any fans of good music.

I bought this C.D. with a friend of mine four years ago, because we were desperate to hear more good-quality punk-rock music. So we took a guess and we bought this c.d., and wow did we guess right!! We would fight over the c.d. all the time, until of course we burned it so that each one would have our own copies. Wow!...I've never been a big fan of Green Day but I know that these guys are much MUCH (im not kidding, people, so sue me) better than Green Day. They play powerful punk-rock, theyre only a three-piece although they sound like 5 or 6 and they play with their hearts. The guitarist is maybe one of the best i've heard play, and the bass kicks ass as well. ditto for the drums. Four and a half years later, this is still one of my most favorite albums in rock. I don't get tired of these guys, and now, unfortunately, i lent it to someone else and that person has not given it back to me yet. So im really pissed off and i really want to kill him for not giving it back...oh well, at least i can buy the new album and NOT lend it to ANYONE AGAIN meanwhile. But after hearing so many mediocre punk-rock bands and punk-wannabes, and other low-budget bands, I have to say that nobody's better than these guys. And ive heard theyre even better live! So buy this album if you want to hear good punkrock music and you want to stop that britney spears plague or that usher plague and those other hip hop idiots. These guys will blow your mind. "Pictures in the Mirror" is my favorite tracks as well as the energic "Roll On", and "Blood on Your Hands". All are very original and have different styles. These guys are 'all-around' musicians and they can play anything and play it good! This is good quality rock that will kick ass to all those fake rockers (Good Charlotte, Maroon 5, Fountains of Wayne, etc. etc.) that are on the 'hotlist' right now. LE will not decieve you. Take it from a punk-rock/alt-rock/indie-rock freak like me.

I can't say anything bad about this band. I have all their albums and have not been disappointed by a single one. I saw them in a club and that week went out and bought this album. After purchasing this I went out and immediately bought 3 more of their albums. You won't be disappointed.

I got turned onto this CD years ago and if the Stray Cats and Social Distortion could ever give birth to a child, it would sound like this. Personally, I don't think the releases before or after this one truly captured how great the Aussies sounded on this album. Every song is fantastic. "Bloody Mary" is probably my favorite track, but every song sticks with you.

Yes, folks. This is one of those "10 Essential Albums" that you want to take with you when you are stranded for years on a desert island. Just about every song here is crisp, clean, fresh, catchy, driving, and just plain musical. The vocals are great, the musicianship is excellent, the material is superb. How can a punk band sound so polished? It doesn't make a lot of sense to me, but from my first listen of the first song, "Prisoner of Society", I've been a believer. Now years later, this album stays close to my CD player at all times.

If you look back at the early days of rock's British Invasion, you'll find just about the last example of "power rock" that The Living End brings back to life. The songs are catchy, but with an edge. The playing isn't perfect, but the raw edges make it more authentic. There are no self-satisfying endless drum or guitar solos. Nothing gets in the way of the music. In short, this is what the world has been waiting for ever since the early days of the Rolling Stones.

Buy it. Listen to it. Love it.

This is an excellent album. I have listened and own all their albums and i have to say this is pretty much there best. I like this album and roll on alot. This album i think is a little better though. There is just something about this band that distingushes them differently from every other punk or rock band. They have a certain style or flair to them. Maybe its that they decided to use an upright bass instead of bass guitar. I dunno. But this is a great album and great band. Get this album if your a fan of rockabilly, punk, or if you would just like to hear a great guitarist by the name of Chris Cheney. Just get this cd. Its awesome. i will tell about the best songs on the cd.

Prisoner of Society- always a classic. first heard this a couple years ago and fell in love with it. very catchy and a great guitar. very rebellious lyrics. i like that

Growing Up- awesome song, upbeat guitar, danceable

Monday- one of my favorite songs on the cd. awesome guitar, great lyrics, very catchy, and has a certain happiness to it, i like it.

Save the Day- wonderful.

Trapped- unexpected ska song on the cd. its great though. a little slow at first then leads into some upbeat ska punk,

Fly Away- awesome guitar, very catchy, and in the middle of the song it has an amazing guitar solo from chris, very catchy and rockabilly-like

Strange- good lyrics, good everything

well this is the conclusion of my review, its cool if you took time to read it, well, ok, this is an awesome cd. BUY IT!

4 out of 5 stars the real pop-punk sound.......2005-08-26

Catchy pop-punk hooks, booming ska rythyms, and furious rockabilly swagger is what we get treated to with The Living End's self-titled cd. Elements of Green Day, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, The Stray Cats with a little dash of Shadowy Men on a Shadow Planet make this record an absolutely brilliant listening experience. This is one of those albums that shine completely throughout without any urge to press the skip button, as every song has a different groove than the last, and all just plain kick ass. Guitarist/Lead Singer Chris Cheney has a voice that is very reminiscent of Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong, and has guitar licks that recall Reverend Horton Heat and Duane Eddy. The band is a three piece power trio who deliver the same kind of punch as Green Day as well with their pop-punk sound, but have a knack of spontaneously jumping into Fishbone-like ska interludes and surf-rockabilly guitar wind-outs. For an alternative to the likes of Good Charlotte and Simple Plan check these guys out right now as this is what pop-punk should sound like.

I had just became a Bob Mould/Husker Du fanatic in the early-1990s and was buying up their back catalogue of stuff when this CD came out in 1994. Anything "new" from Husker Du was a BIG thing, so I snagged it as soon as it hit the record stores. This live CD was compiled from shows from 1987 when they were promoting Warehouse: Songs and Stories, their last studio release, so many of the tracks come from that album. That's OK by me, as I love that album.

I don't usually care for live records but there are a few track here that sound even better here than on the studio releases. "Girl Who Lives On Heaven Hill" is one example as Grant Hart doesn't scream it at the top of his lungs like on New Day Rising. "Keep Hanging On" (recorded on Bob Mould's birthday) is another example. This version makes me like the song even more. I also like how you can really hear Hart's backing vocals like on "Standing in the Rain" and "Ice Cold Ice." Sometimes the backing vocals sound lost on the studio albums, but Hart and Mould sound great together and it really adds to the tracks. Mould sings the chorus to "Ice Cold Ice" a little differently which I also like. "Everytime" is sung by Greg Norton, the bass player with the cool mustache. He has a rough, buzz-saw voice. The song is pretty good. I have it also on a Warehouse Interview record. Unfortunately, "She Floated Away" sounds a bit stale here as it's missing the backing vocals (Hart provided both lead and backing vocals on the studio version). "It's Not Funny anymore" also sounds great here. "Now That You Know Me" was a pleasant surprise. It was recorded on Grant Hart's Intolerance solo album. "Ain't No Water in the Well" is way too yeehaw for my tastes.

Fans can find a lot of omissions here: "Diane" comes to mind, as well as singles "Could You Be the One?", "Makes No Sense At all" (actually, I don't miss them that much), "I Don't Want to Know If you Are Lonely," "Pink Turns to Blue," "She's a Woman (And Now He is a Man)" (one of my all-time favorites), and "Charity, Chastity, Prudence and Hope," but I think it is a good mix of early stuff ("From the Gut", "Target," "Data Control" [great rendition here], "In a Free Land") and later material. It ends with an ode to the Ramones, "Sheena is a Punk Rocker." I remember Joey Ramones on MTV's 120 Minutes saying he thought Husker Du was a Ramones rip-off band. Husker Du may have been influenced by the Ramones, but they created a style all their own and developed their style with each album, and it shows here. The booklet has a history of the band and a few photos including a long colorized one from the "Could You Be the One?" music video.

This band deserves so much more than they got. I really, really believe that aside from lack of big label promotion (of course!) their NAME killed 'em as a more referenced punk band. If that sounds stupid, I know from experience trying to get friends to hear them that the name is an immediate turnoff.
It's too bad.
If you like your punk rock tough and hardcore, this album can suffice - with lightning speed, but the melodies, changes, and soaring choruses will break your heart.
"Keep Hanging On", "Celebrated Summer", and the way Husker Du plays "Terms of Physic Warfare" live are testaments to the songwriting abilities of Bob Mould and to a lesser extent Grant Hart and the band's capacity for pushing the emotional, yearning, nostalgia, bittersweet buttons.
Musically, if you see Green Day's Insomniac as underrated, and emotionally if the Descendants "Hope" or "Bikeage" or "Jean is Dead" are you favorite songs from that band, and if punk anthems are your thing, just give this one a shot.

This is a great introduction to Husker Du, who in a perfect world
should have been Nirvana big. Bob Mould's guitar sounds like a
chainsaw cutting through a eucalyptus tree. Beautiful. I like the
front of house mix sound too, appropriate for this band, who never sounded quite right on studio recordings in my opinion, except for Zen Arcade, what an awesome record! Anyway, this is
great pummeling rock n roll and if I could paraphrase Robert Fripp,"Albums are like a love letter, concerts are like a hot date" This is a hot date.

Husker Du were and are one of the best bands ever, one of those bands I wish I was old enough to be into when they were around or that they never broke up. That being said, this live album from 1994, 7 years after they broke up, could be seen as a last-ditch cash-in by Warner Bros. if it sucked, which it doesn't! This is visceral, punch-you-in-the-chest hardcore rock played at full decibel volume! And wow, can they play. Mould's guitar buzzsaw's through everything, Norton's underrated bass playing is like an earthquake, and Grant Hart's drums have never sounded stronger.....he sounds like he's going to break all his drumskins, he hits them so hard. And the songs....awesome versions of Ice Cold Ice, What's Going On, Celebrated Summer, Girl Who Lives on Heaven Hill, and more. Plus, three new songs they were working on before they broke up, Greg Norton's "Everytime" (a really heavy, savage rocker snarled by Greg Norton and Bob Mould), Grant Hart's catchy-as-hell and blistering "Now That You Know Me", and Bob Mould's "Ain't No Water In the Well" (which is actually the weakest of the 3 new ones...a romping blues stomper, nonetheless). All in all, even though Husker Du's entire catalog of studio albums are ESSENTIAL listening, after you've experienced those, you need to check this out!

This live recording did capture the raw power of Husker Du. The guitar is blaring, the bassline thumping and the drumming? Forget about it, about as fast as you can get. This was hardcore Husker Du doing hardcore Husker Du. HOWEVER, so many of their great songs are omitted in this concert. And I know someone is going to say "well they had so many great songs." Yeah, but no "Don't Want to Know if You are Lonely" or "Makes No Sense At All"? Give me a break.

    5 out of 5 stars Punkabilly Rock at its Absolute Best.......2006-09-12

    The Living End's last release, "Modern Artillery" didn't do much for the trip which was a good thing, because the album was more of a blatant pop punk sellout album than anything else. So now the band is back doing what they do best; rockabilly influenced political ska punk. This is their fourth full-length album and a good follow-up to their second release. The album features song that incorporate the bands unique sound. Give "Wake Up" and What's On Your Radio" a listen and you'll see what I'm talking about.

    There isn't anything as catchy out there as "Prisoner of Society" or "Roll On" from their first two albums, but this is their most matured album to date. Hopefully they will continue to write punkabilly rock tunes I the future, it's what they do best.

    Good punk -- like any really good music -- is kinda hard to find. You have to sift through dozens of hack, ripoff bands before finding something with energy and brilliance.

    And one good example is the Living End's latest album, "State of Emergency." The longstanding Aussie band mixes tightly-wound punk and kinetic instrumentation with some wicked musical aesthetics. It's pretty bloody hard to find a song on here that won't get your heartrate up through the roof.

    It opens with an attention-grabbing bassline, which explodes into a fast-racing electric guitar riff. By the time it slows down into a steady punker, listeners will be hooked. "Countdown toward the end now/no need to panic, no need to panic now... I'm stepping on enemy lines/We're gonna take you to the end of the line!"

    The songs that follow are just as taut as those lyrics, and they hardly ever slow down the machine-gun pace. There's the tight, winding punk-rockers, slow-burners, the dancey rockers, the rockabilly edge which harkens back to the band's roots, and the slower, drum-led "Order of the Day," which hints at a more epic sound.

    Not every song is all rock'n'roll -- "No Way Out" is a gentle, sort of fuzzy acoustic melody that sounds almost like a folky ballad. It still has a rough edge, which explodes into rock'n'roll about halfway through the song. But it shows they can do more than just rock.

    No rock pretensions, no ripping off the Clash or the Ramones. Best of all, absolutely ZERO boredom -- the Living End know how to rock. And unlike most rock bands, they know how to do it without sounding like they're playing the same bloody song over and over.

    Instead, they break out with rapid-fire electric guitar and blasts of blasts here and there, with a sinuous line here and there to spice things up. They're fast, kinetic and the instrumentation is absolutely seamless, mixed in with some solid drums. Usually they repeat the riffs a few times to get toes tapping, then switch gears before it can get repetitive.

    Nice lyrics too -- not brilliant lyrically, but they have the same sense of urgency and tension that the first song does, which match the music to a tee ("Cause they don't wanna know about the things you've done/They don't wanna know about the damage done/Everyone is going down!"). And frontman Chris Cheney has an excellent voice, strong and raw, but with a melodious edge.

    Rough, tightly-wound and ripe for repeated listening, the Living End show what they're made of in "State of Emergency" -- and apparently they're made of raw diamond.

    I enjoy this album, just like any music by The Living End, but I noticed there is much more emphasis on the vocals and melody than before. There seems to be a lot less lead guitar than they're oldest music, and it seems like basslines are used a lot less than before. In the past, it was obvious by the technique that they were using a standup bass, but now, it is not quite so apparent. Over all this was a very enjoyable album, and I really can't complain much. I'm sure I will be listening to this album for quite a while.

    ok, check it. here's what you need to know about this record.

    1. any living end is good living end. it's always good to hear the boys and what they are up to. they have a "sound" but throw in a bunch of other stuff, rockabilly, punk, rock, but mostly, imagination.

    2. this album contains songs of a good length. that is why it takes longer to recognize every song independantly. There's a lot of one and three quarters to 2 minute songs out there you forget within a week. These are longer, more content oriented, more content in playing as well, there's a lot of changeups.

    3. there are some great catchy songs here. Listne to wake up and dont tell me you wont be singing the opening lines. this album is a single factory. if you wanna sing in the shower, the car, or the can, you will. Right now i'm singing "long live the weekend". it's been banging around for 3 weeks now.

    4. it's a fun album. even when it gets slow, you dont find yourself getting bored. if you are an album listener, you will like this, it's got good longevity. i've had it when it came out in aust and it's getting good play.

    5. listen to the clips below. the actual u.s. release is coming soon if you dont want the import. go to their myspace and their site, watch the videos. these guys are the best thing to come out of aust in a long time.

    I have been a Living End fan since the very first time i heard "Prisoner of Society" back in '98. I have all of their albums, and while i think they're great albums, i can't help but feel that they've become somewhat commercialized, and can't really relate to what Cheney sings about on "State of Emergency" like i could on their first album. Well, "It's For Your Own Good" is pretty much like 6 butt-kicking B-Sides to the first album, or at least that's what it sounds like. And "Hellbound" is a fun little glimpse into what this amazing band was like when they were just starting out. Overall, it's always good to remember what big bands used to sing about before they were big, and this double disk is pretty much just that.

    The living end have been amongst the aussie rock scene for ten years now and have yet to dissapoint.This cd (or in my case 2 different Eps)were just the beginning for these guys,It doesnt have the same borderline commercial edge the later stuff does but thats not what matters.What matters are that these guys have Talent and a lot of it,Alot of bands these days get success with 3 chords mediocre songwriting and awful lyrics,This band have far surpassed all that.Here we have 12 (or 6 depending on which Format you picked them up)tracks.The first disc in my view is alot better especially the instrumental track hellbound which shows the band at thier most creative.I was even pleasantly surprised to see a Cure Cover (10:15 saturday night)amongst them.If you are looking for 3 chord pop with songs about ex girlfriends and skateboards avoid this band,They are far beyond that.They are 3 brilliant musicians making great pyscho/punk/rockabilly style music.Hell even elvis fans would probably enjoy it.

    All I have to say is that I fisrt heard The Living End about four years ago and they are still my favorte band today. As a seasoned music lover, I have to admite these guys really know what music is all about. not only are they incredibly musically talented, but they also have the uncanny ability to NOT sound like everyone else. Like oh migod! thats the greatest part. Mainstream music is built to find a sound that people react to and make everyone else sound just like it so they make more money. the tight thing about these punks is they are more talented than any of the pop junk thats out there now and they have such a distinct sound, a quality of music that has been sadly missed for a few decades. These guys deserve more props than they have, Joe Strummer sould be proud!

    Powerful Lyrics! Great Music! True Talent, these guys are awesome! Personal Fav: Headlines. Punk? I don't know, more like pure Rock, they have a sound that is unlike most today. They are great live. Roll On and The Living End, show how much they have developed as artists (the drummer was a diff guy on Hellbound). Poetry put to music.

    Comparing them to Green Day, is a waste of time. The Living End is in a class all their own.

    Anybody who compares these guys to green day or offspring should be (...). There is not a band I have heard that even compares to the living end. This album shows how diverse a rock band can be. From the Stray cats to The Clash to The Police and adding their own special ingredient mixing it all into a blender. It's all amazing I just wish they would have stuck with this style. Instead of simplifing there sound. Anyway they were on hbo's reverb not too long ago they were great.

    I have seen the Living end Three times live and i have heard all their albums including the Hellbound EP. And this is definately their best, especially the fantastic "Who's gonna save us?" although it is a big overplayed hit, and fans seem to despise it, it's simply one of the greatest songs of all time, there is NOTHING like being in the mosh pit singing along to that song. "Hold Up" is a fantastic little story about robbing a bank and makes excellent use of multiple guitars and the classic living end galloping double bass. This is an excellent album for initiates, then again there are plenty of likeable hits on all their albums. Its great to see they dont sway too far from their rockabillyish Gretsch sound.

    I am a huge fan of The Living End ever since I read about them in "Car Kulture Deluxe Magazine." So, it was no shock that, when I saw this album in the music store I bought it right away. But, when I actually listened to it I was disappointed. All but two or three of the songs even sound like the Living End that we are all accustomed to, a band that fuses punk, rockabilly, and jazz. This album is like listening to some warmed over 80's new wave. That's not the band that I love. I would recommend that if you like this group's previous albums at all stay away from this one all together

    I've had this cd for a bit now and thought I should share my thoughts about it. I first saw this band open for Green Day at a theatre in Chicago. From then on I was hooked. Roll On is still one of my favorite cds I own. I was very excited when I got this cd, anticipating what catchy new songs would be on it. It was really a let down for me. There seemed something different about it to me. One of the main reasons I liked the first roll on so much was the vocals were so different of what we normally hear on the radio. The accents make the music sound I don't know, better. This cd was such a let down because the vocals sound more American. This cd sounds like it was made by another garage band from California. Don't get me wrong, it's still a decent cd, but it sounds just like every other new punk music you hear.

      This was one of the many albums to be released within Jandek's blues-folk stage midway through his career. Albums like Living End, Follow your Footsteps, and, of course, Blue Corpse posess a unique instrumental and vocal quality that has never been heard in a Jandek album before. It's a style of deconstructed blues which moans and groans, but has more of a peaceful, stable mood as opposed to the entropetic explosions in albums like Interstellar Discussion. In much of this album we hear Jandek playing acoustic guitar with the backing of "Eddy" on electric and occasionally "Nancy" on vocals or "John" on drums. Nancy sings the song "Crazy," which is probably the most powerful song on the album. Although it doesn't really rank with Blue Corpse and Follow your Footsteps, I still highly reccomend this album.
