More bang for your buck than a truckload of cow doogie!!!!!.......2005-11-30
Man this is a great cd!! If u are a big HAWKWIND fan like me you
have probably searched all the used bins in your areas looking for killer stuff and when you were able to even find any at all half of it wasn't worth what ever you payed for it! Not that the songs and the playing weren't great but the sound leaves ALOT to be desired (what about that editing?) on most of the unoffical releases that are about all that are obtainable.(Thank God for Amazon huh?) Anyway no such problems with this
great buy! Sounds great turn it up loud!! And not the same old
set list that is on most the unoffical live offerings. If u are not one those guys that only like Space Ritual era HAWKWIND
then you should love this one. Why? Because it rocks from beginning to end baby! BUY IT, TURN IT UP AND ENJOY!!!
Get it Now!.......2005-06-15
At first, I thought, do we really need another live version of Brainstorm? The answer is undoubtedly- YES! Also, this live album is way better than The Business Trip. The band is basically a four piece line-up (Bridgette can only be heard on a few tracks) at this point, so you can actually hear the music as it's not buried under a barrage of noise. The songs are longer and there is no fake applause, like on The Business Trip. Even more refreshing, is the total lack of those annoying momentum killing poetry readings and aimless keyboard instrumentals. I've had more success converting people to Hawkwind with this CD than any other Hawkwind CD. Also, unlike some other live Hawkwind releases, the quality of the recording is first-rate. Rock On!
The Companion is the better Live CD.......2005-01-27
This CD, the companion to the "Palace Springs" CD, is actually a better one in that it reflects tha band as it has been live. Songs tend to mix together, the band sounds more like a real band than a synthesized conglomerate, plus some of the songs (Reefer Madness, TV Suicide) are actually better here than they are in studio recordings.
Hawkwind - California Brainstorm' (Iloki).......2004-10-02
This disc,by some has been refered to as 'a companion CD' to the band's 'Palace Springs' disc since they were both recorded live on the band's 1990 U.S. tour.BELIEVE me,'Palace Springs' is SO much better. The only reason I'm giving this release a two star rating instead of one,is that "Ejection" actually sounds pretty decent, but even that track gets snipped off in the last couple of minutes."Brainstorm" is a lame-ass mix and most of all "Refer Madness" is truly pathetic! For Hawkwind completists ONLY.
Not a bad live album!.......2004-02-23
I'm going to have to disagree with the other review...I think this is a much better live album than "Palace Springs". Though I could do without the version of "Brainstorm", the rest of this is surprisingly good.
This live album features the same line-up that recorded 1990's "Space Bandits" album, albeit minus violinist/keyboardist Simon House. To be honest, I haven't listened to this CD in at least a year or two, so I don't even remember all the songs that are on it. From what I DO remember, however....
I like the overall mix...it's not as synth heavy as some of their other albums from this era and the guitars and drums are more audible than usual. I also dig that little chat that Dave Brock has with the audience before the last song....he comes across as very tired, but very funny...you know, HUMAN-LIKE! I must say that I like the version of "Reefer Madness" on here better than the original studio version...vocalist Bridget Wishart sounds very good on this and the band sounds very tight.
Elsewhere, the band does an earlier version of "Snake Dance", which would appear on 1992's "Electric Tepee". On this album, it's called "Eons" and it's credited solely to keyboardist Harvey Bainbridge. I like the version of "Night Of The Hawks", which really rocks out...and I dig their version of "Hassan I Sahba", which goes under the title "Assasins Of Allah" on this album.( They liked to do that on their live albums...change song titles along with changing who wrote them!)
Hawkwind come across as more of a hard rock band than a space rock band on this, which I don't think is a bad thing! This band has released about as much live albums as studio albums and there are better live albums than this, like "The Business Trip", "Space Ritual" and "Live Chronicles". But there are also much worse live albums than this, especially the dreadful "In Your Area". I LIKE THIS ALBUM!
