John Waite ROCKS.......2007-06-29
This CD is so special to me. John Waite's song, "How Did I Survive Without You" is our special song. My husband and I fell in love while listening to that song over 12 years ago. We fall deeper in love every time we hear that song!! I think we have just about worn this CD out too!! www.spiceupyourlifetoday.com
Classic.......2007-06-27
This is an incredible collection of songs, spanning the brilliant career of one of rock's quirkiest(and most rememorable) voices. From The Baby's to Bad English, John's trademark vocals (poignant as well as sarcastic) are indelibly written into the soundtrack of my life.
The Complete John Waite Vol 1.......2007-05-09
It was nice to see that Amazon had so many John Waite titles available. This is a great cd for those who want to get all the hits in one.
Amazing.......2007-04-26
If you grew up to the Babys like I did then your going to love this album a mixture of old and New. Well worth the cost....go for it.
Excellent.......2005-09-03
It came in good shape no cover broken, great songs, like;
How did i get by without you, straight to your heart, missing you, change.....

A treasure of the musical world........2007-04-14
I was first introduced to Miss Russell in 1980 by fellow musicians in Rochester NY. We spent late nights after rehearsals secretly listening and laughing ourselves sick. She had the ability to put us and our conductor in our places and made us like it! Miss Russell clearly understood opera, live concert events, touring and all aspects of the music of the world. Parts of this album were recorded in New York City USA and parts in Johannesburg South Africa. It makes no difference where the audience is, the language and experience is universal and we all laugh together. Undressed bagpipes, ears turning into gardenias, the lament for the fat ladies, and "Jolly Old Sigmund Freud" presented in the singular voice of a "ruined opera singer" are irresistible.
The best comment about this album came from my seventeen year old son. Just last year (2006) I finally got a CD copy of this priceless work of art and shared it with him. He listened totally enthralled. The selection "Hamletto, or Prosciuttino (sung in simultaneous Italian and English0" caused him to comment, "Well, now I know what Hamlet is about." He since asked me to get the others and has loved them as well. "Backwards With the Folk Song" brought back memories of Voice Lessons and dreary concerts that now can be enjoyed safely from a distance. Today's indie and emo musicians could do well to listen and learn.
I would recommend Miss Russell's work for any teenaged class, they seem to adore her sly wit. Besides, all the French Horn players in the High School band need a little teasing from time to time.
A classic above all classics.......2000-03-17
From the velvet-voiced music reviewer herself, Anna Russell has laid many a sour note. This in itself, is what makes her so funny. She takes greater pains to sound bad as most other singers do to sound good. And the best thing about this, and all of her recordings in general is that you will never tire of them, no matter how much you play them... From those before her or after her in the musica funnia farma (P.D.Q. Bach, Victor Borge, Florence Foster Jenkins, etc.), it is in this venue of music appreciation (or as some say, depreciation), that will bring newer fans to the classical arena...
Funny and scathingly true.......1999-10-29
Highly recomended listening for the serious classical music enthusiast who enjoys a good laugh!
Hilarious - move over Victor Borge & Beatrice Lily.......1999-03-15
Anyone who loves classical music, Victor Borge, Flanders & Swann , Beatrice Lily, or PDQ Bach will love this album, play it over and over, and quote her to friends.

With 2003's Once In A Lifetime box set stirring old feelings for the Talking Heads' intelligent and angular pop music, this album could not arrive at a more appropriate time. After years of experimenting with salsa and strings, David Byrne returns with a cohesive record that catches him at his incohesive best: the stream-of-consciousness lyrics, the sly rhythms, the unexpected bursts of melody. Like recent works by Elvis Costello and David Bowie, Grown Backwards represents a return to form, particularly on leftfield songs like "Tiny Apocalypse" and "Dialog Box," which could have easily fit alongside the classics on his former band's retrospective. Meawhile, a duet with Rufus Wainwright on a cover of Bizet's "Au Fond du Temple Saint" points the way forward. --Aidin Vaziri

Thoughts..........2007-03-22
I'm not sure about the album, but I mist say "Glass, Concrete, and Stone" is an AMAZING song with unique instrumentals and lyrics. It truly is extraordinary.
Intelligent Bohemian Pop.......2006-08-30
Masterfully composed and recorded by Ex Talking Head's frontman, Grown Backwards is an assured, slightly pretentious, eclectic pop triumph. From the opening notation, it is evident Bryrne has come in peace and is opting for joy throughout in a more welcoming, broader musical pallette. From sunny Mediterranean beaches to starlit Italian nights, this album has something for the slightly adventurous adult contemporary musical seeker in all of us, complementing the quirky, worldly instrumentation with his jaded humor to beautiful, transporting effect.
An Opinion.......2006-01-15
In response to the listener who may be dissatisfied or perhaps depressed - Mr. Byrne has not ventured so far as some may spite to believe. There is no replacement or even possible description for what the Talking Heads were. After the timely breakup of The Heads, (didn't they try to sell that sans Byrne?) Mr Byrne seemed to revisit his earlier trecks into pure composition. My point being: file this one with the subdivision including "The Forest" and "My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts". If you want to hear "Rei Momo", put in "Rei Momo".Enjoy your space...
A disappointment.......2005-10-10
Byrne has been inching in this direction ever since his 1994 self-titled album, and indeed ever since his divorce from Talking Heads. It's as though he ever wants to be legitimized, assuming that his work with Talking Heads was simply kindergarten scrawl and he now wants to paint on canvas and be taken seriously in higher circles. Accordingly, 'Grown Backwards' is the most polished and mature work Byrne has yet put forth, and it's also the blandest. I have not listened to it more than a couple of times. Sure, it has a pleasing sound, but it's the kind of pleasing sound that invites airplay over the speakers at your local AMC multiplex or bookstore. This is safe and very commercial. Byrne jettisons any pretense to funk that at least made 'Look Into the Eyeball' a lively record, and tries to "grow up" and produce a more "intimate" and "candid" work. His interpretations of Bizet and Verdi are novelties before they're anything else, although they're serviceable enough. Byrne gives a competent interpretation of these compositions, but they never rise above competent. They strive for sincerity, as does Byrne's austere pose on the album cover, and one gets the sense that Byrne just isn't at home in this brand of sincerity. Byrne's solo career, an interesting and valid one, has been one long attempt by Byrne to find himself. Although he seems to be trying to mask it, Byrne is still the adrift, schizoid space alien, tentative and ill-at-ease in the presence of and in relation to others, that he was when he started his career, although this anxiety simply isn't producing music quite as exciting. In a way, he's more pretentious and self-conscious now than when he was wearing the big suit. Creative maturity doesn't have to sound like this.
Dudes, does the fun ever START? .......2005-08-01
Hey, what's up dudes and dudettes?? Well, all I can say about this David Byrne CD is:
WHERE'S VAN HALEN WHEN YOU NEED 'EM!!!
David "the geek" Byrne has got to be one of the weakest singer/songwriters to ever set foot in the dangerous and gritty world of rock + roll. Heck, even this guy's appearance on the Simpsons came off as dull. How can you manage to be lame around Homer and the gang?!
This disk is full of jittery vocals and clever lyrics that make meatheads like me long for the days of Styx, BTO, Motley Crue and Journey. I can't keep up with this guy's scattered way of thinking!! "Grown Backwards" is the summation of thin music. Listen to "Pyromania," Mr. Byrne, then call me in the morning. Byrne could use a fire under his kiester to jump-start his music and aura. Agreed?
Speaking of aura, does anyone know when Roth is reuniting with his bros in Halen? That will be a magical day indeed!!
Until then, skip this CD and pick up the latest heavy rock music available. It's up to us to shut down David "the worm" Byrne before his geeky lyrics infiltrate the world, thus causing an utter meltdown in music.
DO WHAT'S RIGHT!!!!!!!

More Horseflies ..........2006-12-29
I bought this CD following a "and if you liked these you should try this ..." link. Imagine my absolute delight when the CD came and the band line-up included Jeff Claus and Judy Hyman from the Horseflies. In fact, this is very much a Horseflies album, a little bit upbeat and a touch more electric, but exhibiting the style and innovation that has caused me to seek out as much of their original music as possible. All tracks on this album are very, very good. If you want to hear what an innovative blend of country and bluegrass can sound like, this is it. Buy it.
"i've got magic and stitches in my heart for you".......2005-07-09
Boy With A Fish play introspective, atmospheric music that falls somewhere between folk-rock and alt.country. Their music is moody and intensely low-key, their lyrics off-kilter and at times superb: the title track is especially brilliant. I would think that those who like Freakwater, Hazeldine, or the Handsome Family would enjoy this as well.

The Aisler Set: indie darlings........2005-01-14
I'd have to say this status is much deserved. Amy and mates have really found (stumbled?) onto a pretty unique sound, and I like it. Everyone else has already written the Phil Specter and Beach Boys comparisons, so I won't bore you. Needless to say, what they've created works and makes for interesting listening.
Melody, not malaise.......2004-03-22
With the 31 flavors of retro-sounding psych pop on the indie scene these days, The Aislers Set made up of a number of Bay Area personalities, have been busy cranking up their own exclusive brand. Listeners often reference Phil Spector as having a presence in their music, and indeed that can be heard. The sweet bean vanilla base of their music is truly the full piano sound, the teen love song like vocals, with a splash of tambourine perhaps. "Sara's Song" embodies this; but they often stir a ribbon of clean rhythmic guitar rift in for good measure, as in "Through the Shells". Follow with a spoonful of "Catherine Says", where these same influences ring out loudly. I also often get a nice chunk of the Doors when enjoying this album as well... their keyboards do drift over to the psychedelic, for example in the plodding opening of "The Train #1" backed by light bells and some echoing guitar. If you need another taste of this, put on "Mission Bells", beginning with a guitar line reminiscent of "The End", the last 30 seconds slides right into a classic Doors-y breakdown. My one knock on this album: the vocals though right in the forefront throughout, never knock me out and sometimes under whelm me with their drone. Missing is any real amazing vocal harmony.
the best (pop, and beyond for me) album of 2003 by far.......2004-02-03
this is one awesome-ass masterpiece. every single song was lovingly recorded by front-woman amy linton with very detailed ideas and rampant creativity being recklessly tossed about in a very tight, but reverb'd-out bevy of early-to-mid 60s pop (phil spector, shadow morton) and 80s indie pop (the smiths, shop assistants, the orange juice) and maybe to a much smaller extent the influence of early 90s indie rock (sleepyhead, slant 6). from the beginning to the close of this album, the songwriting and arrangements are spectacular. you won't find a better lyricist today than ms. linton, or a more perfect group of musicians creating pop music than the aislers set. and this is the sound of a band getting better by the album.
Mission Bells.......2003-06-27
I've only heard one song from this CD -- "Mission Bells" -- but it's unbelievable! Its driving Spanish guitar line goes perfectly with both Amy Linton's haunting vocals and the brassy instrumental at the end. The main theme is full of surprise major chords that remind me of "She's Not There" and the score from Mulan, but other parts sound almost prayerlike. Although the lyrics are mostly unintelligable, their reedy lonliness is easy to understand. If the rest of How I Learned to Write Backwards is anthing like "Mission Bells," this is an album you can't afford to miss!
One of the year's best!.......2003-05-18
This album is magnificent. In a time where sounds are being exploited and caving in on each other, The Aislers Set moves from genre to genre mastering each while at the same time preseving a unique integrity that makes their albums exquisite. This is their best yet! Each song is masterfully crafted, brilliantly self contained and not overdone. From pseudo-gospel tunes to Phil Spectorish to good indie rock, this album has it all.
It is nice to have a band that isn't self-indulgent lyrically and avoids that "emo" sound and feel which really keeps some good bands from being great. A panoply of sounds from sleigh-bells to 2001 like heart-beat rhythms provides this album with a feeling that grows on you. Smart, beautiful, and at times ethereally delicious, this album is a must have!

MC Profile lacks Skills.......2007-05-29
This work celebrates the catalogue of the Sound providers over a three-year period. After this time three became two, as the MC left to pursue a solo career. Not wishing to be unkind, but maybe that was the best thing to happen to this group. Production wise, they are innovative, with great use of jazzy piano samples and such. They are let down by the MC, who is pedestrian at best. With a half decent MC, the Sound providers are more than capable of progressing to the next Level.
Absolutely Best.......2006-03-22
WOW. i've been waiting for this album to come out and finally got it on the first day. Surprisingly though, they only had one copy, and it wasn't even on display. Anyways, i've already heard 'the field' 'dope transmission' 'yes yall' before, but this is still worth it because they tried to make it sound like a non-stop album that they included about 25 seconds of intro before each song. the singles on here were never before released on CDs and i finally don't have to burn them on blank CDs in order to be able to listen to a song like 'the field' in my car any more. This is better than 'the evening with the sound providers'. after all, this is when MC Profile was still w/ the group, so it feels fresh and this is easily the best album for me right now.

Customer Reviews:
Joan Baez Take a Giant Leap Forward with "PLAY ME BACKWARDS".......2007-03-28
A good CD will entertain and perhaps, even entice. A great CD will also make you think. And then there are those handful of artists who create an enchanting, magical work that takes the listener to a place they've never before been. Joan Baez has created such a piece with her CD "PLAY ME BACKWARDS". Filled with ethereal sounds and exotic beats, Ms. Baez is lightyears away from the acoustic simplicity of her early work, yet the purity and crystal clarity of her voice still eminates directly from her soul and commands center stage. Never one to shy away from controversy, this experimental piece is filled with risks, and they all pay off in the end. For instance, the title track "PLAY ME BACKWARDS" deals with religious ritual and child abuse-hardly the stuff that top 40 music is made of-and in the hands of a less skilled writer and singer, this song could have been a disaster. Instead, it is a brilliantly understated and magnificently presented work that sends shivers up the listener's spine. Juxtapose this with a gospel-inspired "I'm With You" and the CD begins to take you on an up-and-down journey of monumental proportions. Hidden in between the "big" music are tiny little gems which, upon second and third (and more) listening begin to coax you further along the journey. On "Amsterdam", a delicate love song by Janis Ian, Ms. Baez achieves exactly the right tone to bring this paper-thin song to life, and Mary-Chapin Carpenter's "Stones In The Road" is given a breath of fresh air in this wonderful rendition. While other "showier" songs on this flawless CD tend to reach out and instantly grab the listener (such as the Dali-esque "The Dream Song" with its soaring violins and haunting viola, and the triumphant "Edge Of Glory", for this reviewer, it is John Stewart's "Strange Rivers" that is most enchanting. When I interviewd Ms. Baez in the early 90's, she explained that "Strange Rivers" was recorded after a half hour of rehearsal, and then recorded live in the studio, while she jammed with the two other guitar players on this song. "We actually were able to look at each other's faces as we played" she exclaimed, "imagine that!." Truth be told, I love Joan Baez, but have found some of her work to be a mixed bag. That is absolutely not the case with "Play Me Backwards". This is a genius work from one of the greatest women in American music.
Happy 30th Anniversary Joan.......2006-02-05
This is not a solo effort. Paul Simon, Jackson Browne helped with this collection. Baez also covered Mary Chapin Carpenter's "Stones in the Road" and Janis Ian's "Amsterdam." The meaning is complex, but the music is simple and beautiful. It's probably not the first Baez album I would buy, but definitely needs to be included in a collection of her work!
A great cd , Joan Baez singing is amazing.......2005-04-28
Musically is a very fine cd. I love Joan Baez's performance of "Trough your hands " . This is a very interesting record anyway you look at it . I like interesting records, don't you?
Wow.......2004-08-18
I've hearn Joan Baez's music before and, while nice, I never really loved anything she did. But then I heard this CD, and again I was not impressed... until I listened to it a second time. The songs that, at a second glance, I decided I liked, were Strange Rivers, Edge of Glory, and Dream Song. But while I rated Strange River's and Edge of Glory 4 stars, the Dream Song passes them all at a high 5. It's a sad, haunting song, with violins mostly, and Joan's wonderful voice. The Dream Song is so beautiful, and is also fun to dance to.
Outstanding rhythms & music.......2001-02-24
Yes, Joan still has it. In fact I enjoyed this album more than any she has made save Diamonds and Rust. While the songs still have substance, and still can fit the folk genre (if genres you must have), the rhythms & music are more complex than previous works. And on this album Joan sings, not showcases her voice, just sings. I enjoyed it greatly for this. My main attraction in picking up the CD was the song "Amsterdam" penned by Janis Ian. Other songs hold up, and I wouldn't not recommend any. Let's hear it for a singer with substance and integrity.

This music, which I first heard on our classical FM station, requires undivided listening. The Air conditioner interferes, overpowering the quiet sections [which is how it begins] but it is music I want to hear again and again until my brain gets formatted into the present century. Schumann etc. doesn't prepare me for this.
