Arguably their finest album, this follow-up to Opiate showcases Tool at their best, assisted by clean, crisp production, without the muddiness of Aenima. Edgy guitar riffs are complemented by spitting, heavy bass, especially on "Sober" and "Crawl Away". Lyrically, Tool are at their vitriolic best, targeting religious hypocrisy ("Intolerance," "Sober"; always a popular theme), the loss of innocence and its consequences ("Prison Sex"), and deliberate ignorance ("Swamp Song"). Henry Rollins makes a guest appearance on "Bottom," which, along with "4 Degrees," deals with questions of identity. Undertow is also Tool's most musically adventurous album, lacking the occasionally numbing sameness of Aenima, and with considerably more sophistication than their previous work. Very highly recommended. --Genevieve Williams

2 out of 5 stars the one I liked the most?.......2007-06-19

The riffs are good and simple with low driving bass lines, and the drums are decent, the pictures in the album are pulp fiction to me and the song "sober" is probably the most offbeat and power-ridden song on all their albums. I gave the album 2 stars because of my doing research into their band and found out that they are a bunch of intellects-- they are way too smart to be in heavy metal rock prog... blah blah blah. Ultimately I threw the album away.

5 out of 5 stars A more better kind of metal.......2007-04-24

Even though I can speak from personal experience that fans of Tool can get uber-defensive to the point where it's kind of creepy, for the most part they at least have reason to have much praise. In many ways similar to Rush, each band member offers an element worthy of being in the band without having dispensable members. Before they hit a bigger plateau with their next release "Aenima", Undertow was the best Tool record and for some it still is. While for me, it's arguably Lateralus, it's still hard to throw anything negative towards Undertow, their first full-length (with the EP Opiate coming out first).

Intolerance: One of my favorite songs from the album. From its heavy opening riff to the smooth tempo changes to it's catchy "lie cheat and steal" hook that is so fun to belt out, it's one of the better Tool songs around. 9/10

Prison Sex: If there's one word to describe this one, it's kind of "fun". It just has a great groove that you can almost dance to (some atypical dance of course). Controversial lyrics and video, it's another one of the more popular songs and worth a listen. 9/10

Sober: If it wasn't for Schism, this would probably be the de facto signature Tool song although probably people consider it to be. Structure-wise it's pretty simple which is strange with Maynard's vocals getting progressively more emotive in the chorus. 9/10

Bottom: Man they're on a roll. Another homerun with heavy riffs and a great vocals and end scream by Maynard. My only complaint is the really quiet section. Spoken by Henry Rollins, While it does set up the climax, it takes a bit too long to get to. 8.5/10

Crawl Away: To be honest, I'm not completely fond of this one. The riffs are there, vocals and musicianship but there's just something that doesn't do it for me. Maybe it's having 4 great songs in a row and while it's a listenable track, it wasn't as immediate as others. 7.5/10

Swamp Song: One of the more underrated songs on the album. One thing that's quite surprising about it is how hooky it is. A guitar riff you can hum all day to a sing-along section (if you want) when Maynard sings "I hope it sucks, I hope it sucks you, ****er, I hope it sucks you down". 9/10

Undertow: Right from the start, it's very upbeat and chockful of riffs with many tempo changes that just feels right (it's rare to find most bands who are that comfortable with jumping all over the place). Even though it's not that big a favorite, it's still an album highlight. 8/10

Four Degrees: A sitar riff opens the song with a main catchy riff you'll hear throughout the song. Like many Tool songs, there's usually an element that brings you into the songs and makes it worth remembering, unlike most bands who play for 10 minutes and you can't remember a thing. 8/10

Flood: To be honest, I'm not a big fan of this. There's nothing inherently wrong with it, it just doesn't hook me the way it should. It's not like I need poppy melodies or radio-friendly lengths but I at least need something to make the song memorable and this one took awhile. Probably a grower. 7.5/10

I'll forego trying to review Disgustipated since it's just so...weird. But besides that, this is a very consistent record and while it doesn't have the acclaim and success Aenima or Lateralus had, it's still a very worthy addition to the band's catalogue.

4 out of 5 stars undertow review.......2007-04-05

It's cool. I had this "tape" several years ago and it got eaten by my player. I always wanted the CD so I got it. It is as good as I remember it being.

5 out of 5 stars The Undertow Has Me..........2007-02-23

Heavy and thick, Tool's Undertow made a fan out of me. Actually, the first Tool album I bought was AEnima (also excellent), but the first Tool song I heard was Sober (off of this album). Interesting video for that song. Anyway, Metal heads and Progressive Rock fans everywhere should give Tool a try, and Undertow is a very good place to start. I also have AEnima, Lateralus, and 10,000 Days as well. Many say that Tool went downhill with their newest offering 10,000 Days, but I'd say that it really isn't that bad. It may not beat the juggernauts Undertow, AEnima, and Lateralus, but it is worth a listen or five. Long live Tool!

3 out of 5 stars Not De Nova and a little more Rolling Stones.......2007-01-18

The Redwalls wear their influences on their sleeves. If you like the Beatles meets Rolling Stones with a little country flair then you'll love this album. Listen to their second album, De Nova, and you'll realize just how good this Chicago band is. This album lacks the maturaty of De Nova and there's more Rolling Stones on this then the usually present Beatles, but a hidden gem none the less. If De Nova is a 4, maybe 5 star album, I have to give this one 3.

4 out of 5 stars A good start.......2005-08-21

These guys were really young when they made this album, and it lacks the polish of their second.
It's still a great album, and shows true genius. Less blues than the title states, It's stacked full of original rock songs, showing influences from The Beatles and Stones, to David Bowie. If you like the rock of Franz Ferdinand or Bloc Party, with a bit of Kings of Leon Americana thrown in, buy this album.

4 out of 5 stars Eight Track Heaven.......2005-08-12

When I first heard this on Jonesys Jukebox, I thought I was listening to a long lost track from some obscure nuggets band. Instead, I find it's a retro-band with heaps of soul. Bowie and Mott meet Peter Frampton? Oh, what the hell, just pop it in like it's an old 8 track and be transported into a 70s timewarp.

4 out of 5 stars Redwalls Good Blues.......2005-08-09

I've been playing this every day since I got it. The band has the uncanny ability to sound like Dylan, Ziggy Stardust and the Beetles, but not like a cover band. The second song makes you want to sleep with the guy singing it. Can't explain why.

5 out of 5 stars Young Bands Can Play Good Music.......2005-07-28

It's hard for me to describe what kind of music I really like. But when I hear it, it seems to jump out of the speakers and grab me by the ears. That is what Universal Blues by the Redwalls did to me. I picked this one up with their latest disc (De Nova) and I was surprised that I ended up liking their old disc better than their new one. De Nova has it's great moments. However, Universal Blues just seems to have a better feel and flow to it. The singing and playing are great! And yes the harmonies on the vocals are cool too. The sound and feel of this album may take you back in time a bit. But to all the young bands out there, don't be hesitant to channel the music your parents may have played when you were just kids. Make it your own and I'm sure you will make it great. I'll be watching what the Redwalls do in the present and the future.

1 out of 5 stars Sad.......2005-11-24

I really tried hard to enjoy this cd but it is just impossible. I'm a huge tool fan with all there albums and everything else that comes with being a fan: t-shirts, etc... The thing is is that it sounds like some bum with a violen downtown playing tool songs. Nothing much. It is really upbeat and high pitched when the tool songs are supposed to be dark and moving. To start with they need more instruments then that lame ass violen or whatever they are using you may say, "oh but they have more instruments you just are being annoying!" NO! all I hear is that annoying fast-paced, high pitched string instument. I would recommend listening to this cd entirely before you buy it, I guess some people actualy liked this cd since it has 4 stars right now. Thank God I bought it on ebay for $3.99 it made for a good disc. I'm just putting the word out there, this cd sucks.

5 out of 5 stars What to do with a String Quartet tribute?.......2005-05-25

Let me put it short and sweet:

Tool - kicka**
Metamorphic - kicka**

Mix them together - holy f***ing s***!!!!

That's right... mix the original Tool song with the tribute song, and the song explodes like a 20,000 megaton nuclear warhead! Now THAT... is power!

5 out of 5 stars great.......2005-02-21

I think who ever wrote " Dont give thease people your money " should think into it more. All of thease tribute bring a different light to all of the groups that they cover. Every one loves to listen to there favorite bands and what this does is it lets you hear songs that you love in a different way. Witch i found verry interesting. I enjoyed this tool cover cd since that day i heard it in my friends car. i imidietly went out a bought it because i thought it was amazing that somone out there had enough guts to cover todays music with an orchastra. I also thought that it was verry acurate to what tool actualy did with the music. I enjoyed it.
Thank you.

2 out of 5 stars String Quartet Tribute - Good Intentions.......2005-01-22

Tool's music has often been described as "orchestral." It can evoke so many different emotions. My mother even enjoys listens to them. In fact, she says she can almost visualize a ballet to some of their songs. That being said, classical music can sometimes have EVERYTHING to do with a band's music, which would make it obvious to do a string quartet tribute album. I study classical music at a collegiate level, and I applaud these groups' efforts. However, a tribute doesn't necessarily sound good by just playing the same notes as was written. Classical music is played with a different style, and is meant to evoke emotion (just as Tool does). This CD in particular sounds like someone plugged in a Tool recording into a MIDI file. No emotion whatsoever. A lot of the songs chosen don't translate well to a quartet of strings, and the ones that do are so incredibly bland. This idea is great, but I have yet to run accross a SQT with nice arrangements and professional performers.

5 out of 5 stars C. Sipperley's an idiot.......2005-01-17

I would like to say in the defense of the producers of these String Quartet Tribute albums that they have honored me and my band with their efforts. This Sipperley guy (or girl) obviously doesn't understand that:

1. We as artists give the String Quartet Tribute producers the right to put these CDs out.
2. It provides our songs the opportunity to be heard and played in venues that would otherwise not play our music.
3. We get paid for every single CD that is manufactured.

There is nothing "shameless" about their efforts, it is the music business and it only helps extend the life of our songs by having new releases of them available for our current fans and the new ones we gain from the different versions.

I'm not writing this as a debate, I actually have bought every String Quartet Tribute CD I could find to support the efforts of this great series after I was given a copy of the one which pays tribute to my band; Dashboard Confessional.

This is a great album as are the others. I believe that it is a great investment for any fan and each copy that you buy actually pays the artist because these products are licensed.

5 out of 5 stars Top 5 Releases of 2003.......2004-09-20

Without a doubt one of the most creative offerings from any group of musical wizards within the last 2 years. Deeply melodic with a depth that's unmeasurable. Have no doubts, one of the most overlooked albums from the Centro Matic trust in 2003.

5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC DEBUT ALBUM!.......2004-02-10

In the tradition of Sparklehorse and Jim White comes another fantastic album by SSG. The lyrics are reedy and beautiful and the music ranges from simple and elegant to distorted and sinister. It is a fantastic treat for the ears and If you like slower druggy music this is the one for you.

4 out of 5 stars Exquisite Music.......2006-12-27

I first learned about classical tribute albums for metal bands when I heard about the Estonian group Rondellus and bought their magnificent tribute to Black Sabbath, called Sabbatum.

Sabbatum was such a brilliant album that, when I heard about Anotomica, I listened to it and bought the album. Bear in mind, I know nothing of Tool's music. But I do know classical music, and I love this album. The renditions of the Tool songs sound fantastic to me. The music is well-played, and I love feeling the textures of the music and the interweaving of the instrument voices.

The only reason I don't give this album five stars is because of the song "Rampant" on the second CD. It is total crap and not at all enjoyable to listen to if you like classical music; it is disharmonious and disorganized-sounding. It's jarring and unpleasing to the ear. It was also not written by Tool, so I'm rather annoyed that its composer tacked it onto this tribute album.

My advice--Copy all of these songs except "Rampant" onto your iPod and bliss out!

3 out of 5 stars Great idea, mediocre execution........2006-04-23

Just a few days ago I was driving to work listening to Lateralus in my car and I was thinking how interesting it would sound to arrange some of the songs for a string quartet, so I was greatly suprised when I came across this very album at Barnes & Noble.

While I think it's an excellent idea and I can think of few bands that would work better in this format, I was very disappointed in the execution. There just seemed to be very little... intensity. Listen to Ticks & Leeches for example, or the end of Schism--not to mention they skip my favorite section of The Patient. If you want to hear how much sonic ass a string quartet can kick, check out recordings by the Kronos Quartet. I would love to see what they could have done with this material.

4 out of 5 stars Transcribed Bliss.......2005-12-08

This cd set is an amazing orchestral transposition of one of the greatest melodic bands of the current era. The cd is not for everyone. Obviously the metalheads that only appreciate repetitieve basal tones in their ears that will eventually lead to deafness, will not find this set to be to their musical expectations. Those of us who appreciate Tool for their melodic qualities, as well as appreciate 'classical music,' should find these discs to meet their expectations. Obviously, being a string tribute, these discs are instrumental, not rock/industrial covers with vocals. Overall, these discs are refreshing, especially considering most tribute albums these days. After all, the core purpose of a tribute album is to make make money off of someone elses artistic ability. I give this recording 4 out of 5 stars due to the fact that it is a cover album, and it didn't amaze me as much as some classical music does, the first time that i heard it. Overall, it is a very enjoyable listen.

3 out of 5 stars Was expecting so much more.......2005-04-26

First, let me say that I'm a huge Tool fan, and I don't even like "heavy" music that much. I really enjoy their music and I think Maynard is the best vocalist in rock today. Now, on to these CDs. I didn't like them for the most part. The only reason I'm giving them three stars is because they have a great concept and their are a few pretty good sections in them. The songs just don't represent the darkness of Tool's music. If you want to see what I'm talking about, preview Schism. I think the reason this doesn't work is it's going to be impossible to recreate Tool's sound with a violin. A group like Apocalyptica (four cellos re-creating Metallica if you are unfamiliar) would be different, because it would allow Tool's darkness to come through. Furthermore, Danny Carey on drums is probably half the reason Tool is so wonderful. Put any other drummer in Danny's place, and Tool will not be nearly as good as they are. Once again, a string quartet can't replace a great drummer with their instruments. Overall, if you want to check these out, go ahead, but I'm just saying that you're not going to get nearly the same impact as you will when listening to Tool.

Though the Chicago band often finds itself linked with roots rock and alternative country, its first release in five years (following some side projects during the hiatus) is steeped in the influence of 1960s rock classicism in general and the Beatles in particular. The heart of the band's music remains the husband-and-wife harmonies of Steve Dawson and Diane Christiansen, on material predominantly written by Dawson (though Christiansen's "Small Pockets" is a dark, delicate highlight). The opening "Complete Resistance" sounds like George Harrison playing Southern soul licks, while "Everything" and "You Never Will" are buoyant, propulsive pop at its most ebullient. "Sad Panda Clown's Lament" echoes a Beach Boys chorale, and "Triumph Mine, Idaho" kicks like the Rolling Stones before "Good Provider" provides a benediction. It's an album devoid of both weak material and rootsy twang. --Don McLeese

5 out of 5 stars a nearly flawless album and one of 2007's best.......2007-06-15

in this modern age of recorded music, where the convenience of downloading has turned the music business back into a singles-based market, DV's 'the panic bell' proves that just because albums as a whole aren't selling like they used to doesn't mean that musicians aren't striving to put out collections of quality songs, sequenced and arranged with care. while the band has been putting out critically-praised albums and touring with a constant line-up for over a decade, dolly varden refuses to fall into the trap of creating the same album over and over.

from the opening notes of 'the panic bell', it is obvious that this is not a band to be pigeonholed into one specific genre. "complete resistance" and "everything", the first two tracks on the album, along with "you never will", which appears later on the disc, show the band at their most energetic and soulful. vocalist and songwriter steve dawson's vocals still retain a southern blue-eyed soulfulness that rivals alex chilton at his best. diane christiansen, dawson's wife and a fine songwriter in her own right, adds glorious complementary harmonies to steve's tracks which never seem contrived or superfluous.

the album never stays in one genre too long, leaving the listener to wonder just where the band is going next. on moments like "triumph mine, idaho", with its rocking, rave-up ending, "your last mistake", with hints of laurel canyon laid-back folk rock, and "all gonna change", with building harmonic intensity, dolly varden shows the band's appreciation for classic rock riffs and pop hooks. during these numbers, one can invision the band sounding amazing coming through a transistor radio speaker. dawson, again, accented by christiansen, floats over the music with the easy soulful vibe, but shows a different texture in these more traditional rock numbers, sounding more like marshall crenshaw or lindsey buckingham than van morrison or otis redding, but with no less sincerity or skill.

while dawson is the central vocalist on much of the album, christiansen's lead vocals on tracks including the angelic but mournful "the truth is told" and the subtle but effective social commentary "small pockets" are thoughtful contrasts to the more upbeat rock and soul thread that runs through much of the record. music fans that appreciate female vocals without trills and octave-jumping can find a great deal to latch on to in christiansen's strong but feminine voice.

beyond the vocal and songwriting talents of dawson and christiansen, the musicianship on 'the panic bell' is extraordinary without being showy. mark balletto again shows that he truly is one of chicago's best guitar players and that his strong live performances translate well to recording. the need for solid bass lines to create the soul core of the album is unfailingly accomplished by mike bradburn, and matt thobe's steady timekeeping holds the sound together while still remaining interesting and serving the diversity of the album's content.

while one should listen to the band's entire catalog to fully appreciate the scope of dolly varden's talent, 'the panic bell' is a fine showcase of a band that shows a great deal of growth as a musical unit, an understanding of what makes an album feel whole, and a mastery of a sound that is as warm as a live performance and, yet, professional without feeling overproduced.

4 out of 5 stars review of "The Panic Bell" from Harp Magazine.......2007-06-01

It's been four years since the last installment of Dolly Varden music, but The Panic Bell arrives with the key elements of the band's music wholly intact. Songwriter Steve Dawson has an unerring capacity for finding the caveat in joy and desolation, in light and darkness. His voice thins and strains with compelling force; partner Diane Christiansen's is here a fragile ache, there a soothing croon of reassurance; and when they sing together, the two create an entirely new whole. The band moves seamlessly from the delicate, folky sound of "Small Pockets" and the Stones-tinged rock of "You Never Will" to the guitar-and-harp wail of "Triumph Mine, Idaho" and the gorgeous pop of "It's All Gonna Change," all the while managing to inhabit the music with a simmering, barely contained intensity. The Panic Bell serves notice that Dolly Varden continues to make pop music that is seductive, transcendent and peerless.

5 out of 5 stars Let the accolades begin.......2007-04-26

This CD was released on my birthday and what a present it is!

While not really doing anything that hasn't been done before, Dolly Varden infuses its songs with great lyrics with just the right amount of self-rightousness, wonderful arrangements, and excellent musicianship. Hard to believe they are practically unknown outside of alternative country rock circles.

For the uninitiated, Dolly Varden plays an understated brand of rootsy rock with leanings toward country, pop and soul...but is never afraid to launch into propulsive rock and roll. This band has garnered rave reviews with all of its releases--likely to continue with this, its best release yet.

The Panic Bell is more fully realized than the excellent Forgiven Now. You can feel the care and passion that went into this release. Every song sounds fresh. Hard to pick favorites but Good Provider, Complete Resistance, The Truth Is Told and Your Last Mistake shine.

I hope a West Coast tour is in the offing.

2 out of 5 stars Disaster strikes for DV fans.......2007-04-21

Let's give Forgiven Now a 10/10 and Dumb as Magnets an 8/10. Panic Bell earns a 3/10. As noted, I made a rather huge Error In Fact. The album title is The Dumbest Magnets. Sloppy. My bad. Since I am here, I might as well finish off the other albums: The Thrill Of Gravity 7/10; Dolly Varden Live at Schubas 4/24/03 gets a 9/10. And as penance, I listed to The Panic Bell again. Still didn't like it. Very dirgelike.
Remember: Dangerously Thin; Time For Me To Leave; 1000 Men Like Cigarettes; Disappear; and Trying To Live Up (one of the best rock songs ever recorded)? Well, you won't find much of that on The Panic Bell. I don't imagine the band's multi-year hiatus between albums was a particularly great idea. I do, however, find the title, The Panic Bell, (possibly intentionally) ironic.

4 out of 5 stars At last! A natural singer!.......2005-12-15

Anna's voice is a pure delight. The tone and timber are exquisite. But it's her effortlessness that captures the listener. When I listen to her voice, I don't hear someone "singing" as much as I hear an honest voice expressing itself. Anna outsings most of the female 'vocalists' on the market today without ever OVERsinging. In a word, she's tasteful.

All this is enhanced by that fact that she's a wonderful spirit. I highly recommend that you attend a show and take the time to meet her. I'm grateful for the opportunities I've had to sing with her and the time we've spent together. I can never hear her voice or think of a visit with her that I don't smile.

There's an old saying, "People may not remember what you did or what you said but they'll always remember how you made them feel." Anna and her music make me feel wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars Impressive country/rock band from the Windy City.......2005-07-02

I confess I bought this CD out of curiosity: a country band coming from the Windy City and fronted by a Philippine-born female singer! To make things more exotic, I also found out after reading the booklet that the album was mixed and mastered in Oslo, Norway. But apart from these trifles, Trigger Gospel has the chops to deliver plain country/rock/pop numbers in the finest form.

The album opens with "Are You Gonna Miss Me Too", a slow song with a gentle acoustic guitar accompaniment and a nice yodel in the refrain. The second track is an energetic country/rock tribute to Fermin's hometown ("In my town I do what I please"), one of the album's highlights. To avoid sameness, the CD alternates between slow and uptempo songs; in the former category there are the languid "Chance I Can't Afford Not To Take", the imploring "Baby Want You Please Come Home", the piano-based "Dragging On" and "How Do You Judge Me", whose relaxed sound verges on bossa nova rhythms.

Among the uptempo songs, apart from "My Town", are tracks 6 , 9 and 11. "Is That All" is another brisk country/rock number, addressed this time to a disappointing lover. "Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps" is a pop song from the 60s, brought to fame by Doris Day. Anna Fermin makes the song her own and a mandolin solo gives a touch of country, too.

"Down The Road" is a Steve Earle cover from the album "Guitar Town" (1986). Earle's a cappella opening was almost embarrassing (he doesn't have the right voice for that), while Fermin's powerful and gorgeous voice is perfectly up to the task. Also, the inclusion of the fiddle and a more vigorous rendition by the whole band give this song new life.

The only drawback is the experimental "White Birch". The song isn't bad, but Fermin's voice sounds metallic, artificial. I'd prefer listening to the original, unmixed voice. In all, though, the album is very good, a little gem of 37 minutes, which deserves to be known far beyond Chicago city limits.

4 out of 5 stars What sophomore jinx?.......2004-03-25

Things to Come, Fermin's debut CD, was well played, extremely energetic, somewhat overproduced and suffered from a lack of focus. This CD is a lot better. Fermin still covers a lot of styles, but makes them all her own.

There is a little of that noir-ish, reverb-drenched thing going on that made Neko Case's Blacklisted so popular but the songs never get bogged down in it. (Although IMO Fermin's voice and songwriting skills far eclipse Neko's.)

I applaud Fermin for not being afraid to show a feminine vulnerability, especially on the lovely Baby Wont You Please Come Home, although I doubt the song lyrics will garner her an invitation to tour with Lilith Fair. Dragging On, My Town, Down The Road and Are You Gonna Miss Me To are highlights, but there isn't really a throw-away track on the entire CD.

There are a lot of 'alt.whatever' female vocalists on the market right now. Anna Fermin is one of the best I've heard. Effortlessly enjoyable. Now if she would just tour the West Coast.....

    5 out of 5 stars Chicago fan.......2003-11-23

Trigger Gospel sounds like the Pretenders meet Joni Mitchell - it's all great! Anna Fermin is cuter, more talented version of Christie Hynde! Great tunes!

5 out of 5 stars The next Nora Jones?....No..Anna stands on her own!.......2003-11-22

From the time Anna Fermin starts singing on track one (are you going to miss me too)until her haunting begining vocals of the Steve Earl cover (down the road)....you are captured by her voice and her delivery of these songs. This is the album I have been searching for...an album that gives me what I want...strong ballads and toe-tapping tracks...this lady and her band give the listener everything that the Nora Jones album lacked. The mood of this album reflects heart-ache and searching for that special love...I have found my special love...and that is Anna Fermin.

    Album Description

Undertow Records and PressGang Media Group proudly announce the April 23, 2002 release of The Palace at 4 A.M. (part1) by former Wilco guitarist, noted producer, multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Jay Bennett, and fellow Chicagoan singer/songwriter Edward Burch (Steve Pride, Handsome Family.) The duo plans to kick-off this debut release with a tour hitting the East Coast and Midwest starting in late April with label mates Dolly Varden.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars My Darlin'.......2007-07-18

I'm glad to hear that Jay Bennett wrote "My Darlin'" because that's always been my least favorite Jeff Tweedy song (or so I thought).

I haven't heard this record, but I gave it 4 stars because Edward Burch did so himself.

4 out of 5 stars Jay Bennett Seems to Have Been at Least 70% of Wilco.......2007-01-27

It seems like Wilco with Jay Bennett sounds a lot like Jay Bennett without Wilco. Or at least, Jay's influence in Wilco was greater than I once thought. I really never gave Jay's music much of a chance after the Wilco split. Why? I don't really know; all I know is that I've missed out on some great music. I am still a big Wilco fan, and I think Tweedy is a great songwriter. But Jay Bennett was a huge part of that band. Listen to A Ghost Is Born, and compare it to the previous 3 Wilco records. Its all an opinion, but to me, they were much better with Jay than without. Do yourselves a favor..if you like Wilco, buy all of Jay's solo stuff. I doubt it will disappoint.

    4 out of 5 stars Clarifying raven2017.......2004-07-30

I could not submit a review without giving it a rating, so I randomly went with 4 stars.

Jay Bennett did not simply "have a hand" in writing "My Darlin'.'' Rather he WROTE the song. Our version (the one which appears on P4AM) is the original, and Summerteeth's is the cover, in spite of their flip-flopped order of release.

As for "Shakin' Sugar" and "Venus," we have always been very clear right from the start that these songs were Tweedy/Bennett collaborations ("check your fileshares" suggests cloak-and-dagger antics). If "Sugar" sounds like Wilco's "Alone," it shouldn't be surprising because the basic tracks are the same. WHY are they the same? Because Jay Bennett played EVERY instrument on the Wilco version. We simply added some more stuff to it and put it on our record.

As to whether people like our record better or Wilco's records better, I do not really care. I make records because I enjoy it. I just wanted to clarify a mis-informed opinion.

    Thanks,
    Edward Burch

4 out of 5 stars Drinking On Your Dime.......2003-07-11

I purchased this disc mainly for the song "Drinking On Your Dime" which i heard in a movie which I do not recall the name of. Great melodies are all through the songs and was so happy that this did not turn out to be one of those cd's you buy for one song and it turns out that nothing else is worth listening too. The song mentioned however is worth the price of the disc, great tune.

    4 out of 5 stars This isn't Wilco...but that's good!.......2003-06-16

I suppose it's natural for the breakup of a band (or one musician's removal as was the case with Jay Bennett being forced to leave Wilco) to cause fans to take sides and proclaim one side the victor. This happened when Uncle Tupelo broke up and people took sides either with Jay Farrar or Jeff Tweedy. Personally, I couldn't care. They are both stellar musicians and I've enjoyed their respective work over the past several years.

This album by Jay Bennett is surprisingly good and I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys Son Volt/Jay Farrar, Wilco, Ryan Adams, or any other singer-songwriter who sings with passion. No, it's not Wilco, but for that I'm thankful. If he had left the band and tried only to repeat what Wilco was doing, he would be bashed left and right. Give the man some props for doing his own thing and enjoy it for what it is...Great music.
