Appalachian Stomp is an ideal starter disc for those just beginning to explore bluegrass. Mostly this is because its 18 selections are so immediately accessible. The "classics" here, in other words, are usually those infrequent bluegrass cuts to have gained radio recognition beyond a core bluegrass audience. That explains why along with timeless standards such as Flatt & Scruggs' "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" and the Osborne Brothers' "Rocky Top" we also get "Dueling Banjos" from the film Deliverance, a cut that is to classic bluegrass what Walter Murphy is to Beethoven. There are less immediately obvious choices too, though. If your previous exposure to bluegrass doesn't go beyond the Holy Trinity of Bill Monroe, Flatt & Scruggs, and the Stanley Brothers--for example, if you've never heard J.D. Crowe & the New South's stellar example of progressive bluegrass, "Old Home Place," or experienced Jimmy Martin lay down the law on his rousing "You Don't Know My Mind"--then you're in for a high-lonesome surprise. --David Cantwell

This is a great introduction to Bluegrass Music for anyone interested in the genre. It gives you a feel for the high lonesome sound Bill Monroe made famous. The songs will have you tapping you toe in no time!

5 out of 5 stars Replacement.......2002-04-03

Years ago while I was overseas in the army I bought this tape and have enjoyed it very much. The tape has become old and worn and since I now have a computer the that plays CDs, personal CD player, CD player in my truck, and etc. I bought it on CD so I can continue to enjoy it for years to come. Don't be fooled this CD can be enjoyed by any and everybody of all ages. I am 35 yrs. old but I also own CDs by Britney Spears, NSYNC, CCR, Backstreet Boys, the Eagles, B.B. King, Christina Aguilera, and many others and I enjoy all of them. If you enjoy the samples you well enjoy the whole album.

5 out of 5 stars What became of Ellie May? Did she enter a convent?.......2001-01-25

Columbia has released a series of CDs paying tribute to the Country Classics, volume 3 of which is entitled AMERICANA and contains twenty-five so called "saga songs", i.e. numbers which put to music stories of good vs. adversity.

This disk features a veritable posse of legendary artists. Johnny Cash is the most represented ("Don't Take Your Guns to Town", "Tennessee Flat Top Box", "A Boy Named Sue", "Highwayman" - the last with Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson). Others with more than one track are Marty Robbins ("Big Iron", "El Paso"), Hawkshaw Hawkins ("Twenty Miles from Shore", "Soldier's Joy"), and Stonewall Jackson ("Life to Go", "Waterloo").

Then, there are my favorites:

"The Ballad of Davy Crockett" (Fess Parker) makes me yearn for the coonskin cap I had as a kid. It'd look mighty fine at the big management meeting. (Actually, I think it was rabbit fur.) I'd probably run afoul of PETA, though. And who needs that hassle?

"Big Bad John" (Jimmy Dean) reminds me of the hero I once aspired to be. Unfortunately, real, everyday life is pretty much mundane. Besides, there are no mines locally, and sewer work doesn't have quite the same cachet.

Even though I love just about everything British (except Lemon Shandy), "The Battle of New Orleans" (Johnny Horton) is a real toe-tapper. Makes me want to dump tea into Los Angeles harbor. In your eye, Tony!

The next time I have to pay my IRS taxes, perhaps playing for them "May the Bird of Paradise Fly Up Your Nose" ("Little" Jimmy Dickens) would get a more warm `n' fuzzy response. Hmm ... maybe not.

Lastly, "The Ballad of Jed Clampett" (Lester Flatt, Earl Scruggs and the Foggy Mountain Boys) brings to mind Ellie May sunbathing out by the CEEment Pond. Let's dwell on that vision for a long moment. Dang, Uncle Jed! (If you haven't a clue as to what I'm blathering on about here, then forget it, as you're too young to appreciate this CD anyway.)

My only regret concerning this collection of down-home favorites is that the catchy theme from "Green Acres" isn't included. Pity. I was hoping to sing along.

5 out of 5 stars The Absolute best!.......2000-10-25

A must have for all true country music fans. It has the ballads and songs of the best bygone era in country music. Buy this and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Oh, the memories!.......2000-06-29

I stumbled over this CD while looking for something with "Long Black Veil" on it. What a gold mine I found with all these mostly country oldies plus a few newer ones! About all that is missing is "Summer Wine" and "Miller's Cave." Even to my tin ears, the sound is great; and I certainly enjoy listening to the original recordings rather than someone else's.

5 out of 5 stars Definitely an essential collection of mid-1960s music from Mac .......2007-01-02

With over 50 years in business, Rural Rhythm Records has built a catalog that connects many dots from past to present. Since its 1955 creation, Rural Rhythm has released hundreds of classic performances by many legendary bluegrass and old-time musicians such as J.E. Mainer, Don Reno, Red Smiley, Mac Wiseman, Vassar Clements, Hylo Brown, Bill Harrell, Jim Eanes, and many others. This album is part of that archival catalog. The label owes its Arcadia, California start to Uncle Jim O'Neal whose vision was to release the music of many top bluegrass and old-time musicians in the 1950-70s, seeking success where Starday had failed by producing records of limited appeal by lesser known, albeit talented, musicians.

Mac Wiseman was born on May 23, 1925. He hails from Crimora, Virginia but lives on Percy Priest Lake, near Nashville. He was born in 1925, the same year the Grand Ole Opry started. In 1944, Mac began his career as a DJ in in Harrisonburg, Virginia. In 1946, he worked with Molly O'Day, then in 1948 an original member of Flatt and Scruggs' Foggy Mountain Boys, and then in 1949 with Bill Monroe. From 1952-1956, Mac with his band "The Country Boys" recorded several hits for Dot Records including "Jimmy Brown the Newsboy," "Love Letters in the Sand," "The Ballad of Davy Crockett." From 1957-1963, he was an A & R man (Artists and Repertoire) for Dot Records and ran the company's country-music department. While at Dot, he was instrumental in the success of Pat Boone's career. It was Mac who suggested that Pat record the song "Love Letters in the Sand" which became a smash hit for the young singer. In 1958, Mac one of the founders of the Country Music Association (CMA) and its first secretary. In 1965, he performed at the first bluegrass festival in Fincastle, Virginia. In 1966, Mac managed WWVA Jamboree in Wheeling, West Virginia. That was the year that he recorded this album for Uncle Jim's Rural Rhythm Records. He was in fine country voice for songs that also include some uncredited accompaniment with drums, jew's harp, Dobro, harmonica, autoharp, electric bass, and others.

In more recent time, Mac's kept busy with music. In 1990, he was elected president of R.O.P.E. (Reunion of Professional Entertainers) in Nashville. One of the goals of the organization is to build a retirement home for country music entertainers. In 1991, he worked at the revived Old Dominion Barn Dance, Richmond, Virginia. In 1992, he worked at the Willie Nelson Theatre in Branson, Missouri. In 1993, Mac was inducted into the IBMA's Hall of Honor. In 1997, he recorded with "The Groove Grass Boyz." In 2001, Wiseman recorded a duet with his old friend Johnny Cash: "When It's Reveille Time in Heaven."

Songcarriers and musicologists would be particularly interested in this type of archival material. This set of 25 classics is reissued in Rural Rhythm's "Heritage Collection." It contains original mixes from 1966 along with some bonus tracks from the Wiseman master vault archives. Liner notes were written by country music historian Colin Escott based on an interview conducted with Wiseman. For the price and volume, this is an essential collection of mid-1960s Wiseman music for your own library.

Don't expect to hear vocal harmonies, elaborate arrangements or the same level of clarion studio recording quality we hear today. Rather, just enjoy and relive a classic country sound of yesteryear. Most of the cuts span about 2 minutes apiece. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfull!.......2007-03-08

We had forgotten how many terrific songs Ed Bruce both wrote and recorded himself. It's wonderful!

1 out of 5 stars Ed???? How could you?.......2006-07-30

I just can't understand why a stand up guy like Ed Bruce would be a party to a sleazy, underhanded, lowdown RERECORD like this. Maybe he needs the money. Or nobody told him the dates on the CD would be so poorly marked unsuspecting fans would get duped. Whatever the reason, it's not a very good way to say thanks to those who have supported him all these years. Even if this is the only way to make these songs available, people still deserve to know what they are getting. So much for Ed, what about Varese Sarbande Record company? They have a good reputation in this country for selling quality CDs-- with original recordings. And amazingly Ed Bruce Greatest Hits contained original recordings--but they pulled it off the market. And now it sells used on Amazon for $80!!! Maybe they lost the rights to market Ed Bruce's greatest hits, but a rerecord is hardly a solution!!! After all, it makes me want to question the authenticity of all their other C&W CD's [Wilburn Brothers, Donna Fargo, Joe Stamply, Susan Raye, Jeanne Pruett, Paul Overstreet]. Do they contain original or rerecordings? If those are real, then why are they trying to palm off this bogus Ed Bruce greatest hits CD? Man, that burns me up. Varese! You have taken money from millions of C&W fans under false pretenses. Unless you want us storming your office -- in Paris, here's what you should do. Pay whatever you have to pay to put the ED Bruce Greatest Hits containing original recordings back on the US market. And we'll call it even.

1 out of 5 stars Not the Same Ed Bruce.......2003-06-20

Although Ed Bruce has the words right, the lacks his original voice as in the original recordings. The music is lackluster and does not meet up to the standards of Ed Bruce recordings.
The best bet would be to hang in there until "Ed Bruce's Greatest Hits" are available.

3 out of 5 stars Late-90s re-recordings of singer-songwriter's works.......2003-05-24

You have to look pretty carefully on the back of this CD to find the minuscule, typed explanation: "Contains new recordings of Ed Bruce's greatest hits, recorded April 1997." After finding it, one might be inclined to think this was some quick knock-off to fill out a contractual obligation or cash in via a TV offer. But a quick spin through the tracks finds Bruce's voice in good shape, supported by well-crafted productions that are neither chintzy (okay, there are some less than stellar uses of keyboards), nor overblown with modern studio techniques.

The album opens with Bruce's largest success as a songwriter, "Mammas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys." Though known for its chart-topping version by Waylon & Willie, Bruce himself actually took it to the top-20 three years earlier. Bruce covers eleven additional tunes, seven from his own pen, including a nice rendition of "The Last Cowboy Song" (on which he is remindful of Waylon, himself).

As with most re-recordings, this is not the place to start your appreciation of the artist's catalog. The best place for that would be Varese's now out-of-print "The Best of Ed Bruce," featuring most of these songs in their original versions. On the one hand, Bruce's maturity and rethinking of his songs is worth hearing, on the other, recording many years worth of hits in a short series of sessions can't help but compress the range these songs originally presented. While these are anything but throwaways, they're also no substitute for the originals, leaving them mostly for Ed Bruce fans and completists.

5 out of 5 stars A Collection that epitomizes Delbert's accomplishments.......1998-11-25

To answer the proverbial desert island question, as it would pertain to only one Delbert McClinton album, "Plain from the Heart" must be the choice of a true Delbert enthusiast. From the raucous, can't keep your seat, gotta dance and sing-along tunes such as "Rooster Blues" and "I Wanna Thank You Baby" to the slower, thought-provoking, and lyrical classics like "I've Got Dreams to Remember" and "Lipstick Traces", Delbert makes all the songs he sings his own, with his inimitable vocals and arrangements. Even a remake or cover like "In the Midnight Hour" is a new experience when a musician like Delbert can make you feel like HE feels. Delbert can make us feel that way, because you can't help but feel tha Delbert is one of us, and we are one of him. So, I strongly suggest you go to your desert island, take along "Plain from the Heart" (and maybe an extra long extension cord), kick back with "plenty o' red wine, a whole lotta sunshine" and Delbert McClinton on the "Sandy Beaches".

5 out of 5 stars The Jealous Kind makes other singers jealous.......1999-06-21

Let's face it...anyone named Delbert is probably danged good at his job...you can't tote that monkier through life and not strive to excel just to get folks to hush up. Delbert can sure enough make folk hush up, it's hard to chatter when your jaw drops. Anyone who sees Delbert perform for the first time just naturally gets left speechless, so come prepared with a pad and pencil if you're not already a fan. If you can't find him touring nearby, just listen to 'The Jealous Kind' a few times and see if it won't make you swear eternal loyalty to the Cult Of Delbert. You'll be in good company, as represented by other fans and reviewers listed here. Delbert's got the pipes, y'all. He's no Johnny Come Lately, honkeytonkin' is his craft and he's been working roadhouse crowds into frenzied true believers for more years than your Mama's been making good cornbread. He's got some good cuts on this CD, the title cut alone is worth the price, and 'Back To Louisiana' is guaranteed to get the halt & the lame up and rockin'. Like those Lotto folks say, "You can't win if you don't play"...and you can't win if you don't play some Delbert very loud and very often. Try his latest CD 'One of the Fortunate Few' for an update on how the rascal is rocking the house these days. Y'all might as well get with it, times a-wasting. Hurry up and get happy.

I bought the LP Jealous Kind in 1980? and it has always been one of my favorites. I think it ranks right up there with One of the Fortunate Few. Delbert is awesome!

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic CD!.......2007-06-01

I love compilation cds. Songs from this collections frequently top my Most Played list. A few gems you may enjoy, A Higher Place (disc 1), Lola's Theme (disc 1), Put 'em High (disc 1), Love on my Mind (disc 2), and Music Sounds Better with You (disc 2). Still working my way through disc 3 but I am certain I'll find some great tunes on that one as well. The song selection is a great variety of different styles from Electronica & Dance themes. Another highly recommended CD!
