5 out of 5 stars Favorite Girl Goth Metal Album.......2007-06-27

This album absolutely rocks. It stands up to repeated listening very well. It's my favorith Goth, girl album.

The tracks and lyrics are pretty much goth, metal.

This album has well constructed songs, with good lyrics and killer hooks. The vocals are edgy but not raspy, or overly sweet either. A lot of goth girl singers are too cloyingly sweet for me.

The main themes are recognizable and unique to this band.

And all of the tracks are excellent! So what's not to like?

People who say this is not metal should give this one another listen or 3.

5 out of 5 stars these WoMen Are.......2007-01-29

cool. They had nothing to say but kind words when they were heckled by a few who thought women could'nt rock at Ozz Fest: And this is before the people had heard them play! (One guy admitted that..) Tight, polished, beautiful women that spit on the notion that women are'nt polished and beautiful creatures who can attAin power.

4 out of 5 stars All girl band that kicks.....you know.......2006-03-15

What can I say about this group? Well they are for real with what they say/play....how many bands do that anymore....surely you aren't thinking emo(ewwww) but yeah, anyway, this group packs a good punch.....at first, with songs like the opening track and number 8's "right through you" "simon says" stands out too....other songs are only ok....but this band is definitely worth everything, these girls rock out and jam out nicely with only a few bad apples in the pie.....check them out if you are into active rock or maybe JUST getting into active rock....A sure-fire win in any case

5 out of 5 stars SIMON SAYS..........2006-03-04

I bought this CD back in the summer of '99 and was so thrilled to have bought it. My fav' song is "Simon Says" as it pokes fun at all the white boys who try to be black. And back then you would see a lot of white people (guys and gals) putting their hair in dreadlocks, wanna be Hip-Hoppers. I hate hip-hop. When Biggie and 2Pac left, that's when I left. Hip-hop is now a celebration of stupidity. They just keep lowering their standards more and more everyday. Ya know what I'm sayin'? "Freaks of Nature" gets 5 stars in my world. Besides, I just love that witchy-bitchy look. Which reminds me... I have to go rent "The Craft"...

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST CDs I HAVE EVER HEARD!!!.......2006-01-26

I stumbled upon this CD almost accidentally. It turned out to be one of the best CDs I have ever listened to. Drain s.t.h. is an awesome band. Maria's lead vocals are infectious and Flavia, Martina, and Anna back her up with hard core instrumentals. This group will prove to anyone, without a doubt, that females do know how to rock. I highly reccommend it!

3 out of 5 stars not as good as i expected.......2007-07-08

This album is a mixed bag really. Some of it is good, at least musically. A few of the lyrics are great, but not all of them.

The sound of the album is great but not good as capturing what Kansas should sound like. Even taking into account that all bands progress, this album is disappointing. Bringing back the violin probably sounded like a good idea, but this sounds too much like they were trying to make themselves sound like they did back in their heyday.

Steve's vocals on I Can Fly are terrible. The lyrics are only OK. Desperate Times and Hope Once Again, while trying to say something big and interesting, sound too much like cardboard cutout songs. Black Fathom 4 seemed like a vain attempt for them to capture the rawness and roughness of a song like Lonely Street or The Devil Game from their second album.

Under the Knife and Need are pretty much throwaways and not even worthy to be B sides, much less on this album. Freaks of Nature is a bit of a rocker and is easily the only good song here. Cold Gray Morning is a Kerry Livgren leftover that sounds a bit like old school Kansas but still doesn't make this album any better. Peaceful and Warm is a balled type song with clunky lyrics. While it is heartfelt it still doesn't exude the emotion it was obviously trying to reflect.

So all in all this is not a great album. It has a few good songs (as most bad albums do) and it is really only worth owing to the completist or the rabid fan who must have everything. I still listen to this only occasionally because it brings back certain memories of my life at the time. If not for that, i would probably get rid of this.

3 stars. This could have been much better.

3 out of 5 stars Kansas - The Violin Is Back With Mixed Results.......2007-06-27

Kansas went on a long hiatus from putting out new studio albums in the late 80's and early 90's, but they never stopped gigging during that time. After the departure of Steve Morse the live version of the band brought in Greg Robert on keyboards, and the multitalented David Ragsdale on violin, guitar, and keys. The band toured constantly and began to build back an audience. Having Ragsdale in the band brought in a fresh vitality and re-established the all important electric violin to the Kansas sound. Greg Robert freed up Steve Walsh from his keyboard duties allowing him to become more of a frontman and showman. It was this lineup that went into the studio to record "Freaks Of Nature" in 1994. This one gets mixed reviews from Kansas fans and I have a similar feeling. On the one hand it is great to have a violin back in the band and Ragsdale is a very formidable talent. On the other hand he is not always given that much to do and I think he could have been used more. Steve Walsh's voice has changed considerably since the last album in 1988 and not for the better. His once crystal clear vocals now have a definite raspiness to it. His voice is not bad, but also not what it was. The songs are for the most part good. Some favorites include "Desperate Times", "Black Fathom 4", "Freaks Of Nature", "Cold Grey Morning" and in my opinion the best song on the album the closer "Peaceful And Warm". The rest of the album is decent although "Need" is pretty much a thruway track. Overall I don't think "Freaks" was quite as good as fans were hoping for, but at the same time it was a decent effort from a band getting back on it's feet.

3 out of 5 stars Didn't like this at first, but it has grown on me a bit over the years.......2006-02-18

I bought this cd in 1995 when it first came out. At that time my cousin Barry loved it and I just couldn't get into it hardly at all. It just didn't sound melodic or as musical as the many studio albums that came before. Just pretty basic and raw, but I just listened to it for the second time this year, after basically not listening to it since about 1995, and maybe because my mental healths better now, but I'm not really sure, I am starting to like at least five or six of the tracks on FREAKS OF NATURE. The only song that irritates me is the first song "I can fly". It just sounds totally stupid, when you compare it to their prog rock like POINT OF KNOW RETURN, but other than that stinker I can stomach all the rest of the tracks. Back in 1995 I would have given this a one star rating, but now it deserves about a three star rating. If you compare this with their 70's and early 80's heyday, this doesn't quite measure up, but if you let it stand alone on it's own, it's a fairly good listen. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars A better Kansas.......2006-01-11

I realize that not all Kansas fans view this as their best work, but I feel that it really broke new ground for them. This is by far my favorite Kansas album if you don't include those Greatese Hits compilations. "Freaks" has an edgy feel with lots of tense, dramatic and sometimes dark overtones. But, above all, It really ROCKS. Everyone I have played it for likes it. I have been a Kansas fan for years, but this album gave me a whole new view of them ... like listening to them for the first time.

Cays album "Nature Creates Freaks" is 100% pure aggresion with enough melody for repeat listening. I ordered the album from the U.S. and am envious of all you Brits who seem them live. I recommend this album to anyone who is sick of hearing rapcore or boybands everywhere. Cay is a mixture of grunge, indie sound, and plain old rock and roll.

5 out of 5 stars Mike Tramp's darkest, meanest, heaviest, and best!.......2004-01-19

After nearly 10 years of its release, I am still baffled: how can such an incredibly deep, cerebral, and poignant album go unnoticed by the masses? Is it because Mike Tramp, before forming Freak of Nature, was the singer of the somewhat famous band White Lion? Did people who wanted to discover new bands turn their back on FON because of some preconceived notions regarding their singer? I don't see it. Whatever the reason, both the band FON and their second (and unfortunately last) album remain -to this day- among the most underrated entities of the 90's. It's a shame people missed out on FON, for Gathering of Freaks features Mike Tramp's best vocal performance ever along with his most haunting songwriting. He never before or after GOF wrote such lyrics again. Maybe the world wasn't ready to accept this album at the time of its release, who knows?

Gathering of Freaks is a much darker and heavier album than FON's self-titled debut. In fact it is by far the heaviest album Mike Tramp has ever written and sung on. Lyrically it deals with social issues, as opposed to personal matters. The subjects vary from song to song, but as a whole, there is a great sense of unity on the album that makes you think it is a theme album. "The Gathering" is a very short, yet haunting, intro starting with a dark acoustic piece and followed by Tramp's deep and somewhat angry voice. It ties in with the heavy metal masterpiece "Enemy", which is perhaps the most face-ripping heavy metal song from Tramp ever. The double guitars are fittingly supported by Jerry Best's bass and Tramp's vocal harmonies during the chorus are killer. "Stand Back" is about the indifference in society, how people don't care about anyone else but themselves. "Raping the Cradle" is where the tone of the album goes down to emphasise the lyrical and artistic message of the track. It is about a father raping his own daughter looking at the tragic situation from the daughter's point of view. "Big Black Hole" showcases Mike Tramp's almost growling vocals, especially in the outro. The chorus is quite melodic compared to the first set of songs, but not in the sense you would call catchy. Tramp's voice at the end of the song is out of this world. To this day I respect him for going out of his way to try something new and dangerous, instead of jumping on the bandwagon to write a few more love ballads and take the easy way out. His vocal range may not be the best in the world, but the effort he put in this song is nothing short of amazing. "The Tree" has got to be one of my all-time favourite songs of all times. The slow bass intro, the unexpected key and tempo changes, and the very bold lyrical aspect make it one hell of a song. It combines the subjects of deforestation and death penalty without making it seem forced the least bit. The back vocals serve their purpose very well too and I just love the drumming on this one. The entire structure of this song is way ahead of its time. "Candle" and "Need" are the two mid-tempo/slow songs on the album though from a lyrical standpoint they are much heavier than the rest of the tunes on this CD. The latter is about drug addiction featuring one of Mike's most emotional vocal delivery. The last set of songs like "Powerless", "Open Space", "Get it Yourself" are full of anger, though not in a negative way. Tramp basically screams at the senselessness of injustice in all forms. "The Parting" closes the album successfully making you think that this is one of the most complete yet overlooked releases ever.

This album obviously was made to refuse any record label's terms. It's art for art's sake. Maybe that's the reason why they couldn't last longer than two albums. Then this is the perfect proof that every second on it contains pure honest emotion.

Tracklisting- The Gathering . Enemy . Stand Back . Raping the Cradle . Big Black Hole . The Tree . Candle . Need . Open Space . Get it Yourself . Powerless . The Parting
