Album Description

MUSIC FROM THE MYSTERY OF SELF-DISCOVERY. Song-poems in a folk & country style, with intriguing arrangements of acoustic guitar, cello, violin, piano, bass and percussion. There is a secret behind what appears. It reveals itself in the most unexpected moments. The undeniable sense in the stillness of a summer's night that a star is looking back at you. A glimpse of something profoundly captivating in the space between two thoughts. An inexplicable occurrence of perfect peace in the depths of excruciating pain. Always, it takes you by surprise. The usual ways of knowing cannot catch it. Like a bird winging across the sky it leaves no tracks in memory. Yet it is unmistakably here, unmistakably real, more real than anything that can be known. And once glimpsed, even for an instant, there arises in the depths of the soul a hunger for it, a love affair with it that will not be satisfied by anything in this world. The songs offered here are born of this love affair. Each is an invitation to a love so mysterious and ruthless that it will not rest until all belief in oneself as separate from that Secret is stripped away, revealing beyond any possibility of doubt that it is truly YOU who looks back on a starry night, YOU that is present in the empty space between thoughts, only YOU that shines as the Heart of All Being. BAND MEMBERS: CELLO by Steven Polage, associate professor of cello at the University of Oregon School of Music, and cellist with the Oregon String Quartet and Trio Pacifica. VIOLINS by Mark Josephson and Gordon Burt PIANOS by Dik Darnell of Etherean Records and Hal Paris BACK UP GUITAR, BASS and PERCUSSION by Weave, author of the award winning CD, DRUM CIRCLE, from Etherean Records. 5 out of 5 stars An AntiWar Masterpiece.......2002-08-26

Tippett and Britten were composers who, though very different in temperment and style, had many interests in common. One of the overiding concerns with both composers was the moral response to war and it's horrors. For Britten, the War Requiem and Owen Wingrave are his very clear moral response to war. Tippet, in his fashion is much more psychological in this work, which must rank as one of Tippett's best and most powerful operatic statements.

King Priam is a dramatic tour de force. Based on the Illiad as seen through the eyes of the Trojans, the work is a meditation on the inevitability of fate in mass movements like war. Priam, though illdisposed to the war, is unable to stop or control it as it takes both of his sons, his kingdom and then finally his own life. He emerges as a figure of moral power and grandeur, but ultimately as impotent and tragic. This libretto is one of Tippett's best and most clear statements.

Musically, Priam is a powerhouse, inaugurating Tippett's second major style. Priam is constructed in a mosaic style. Small chamber groups of instruments with defined musical content are assigned to characters. As the work develops, these small groups combine and recombine in a shifting maze of patterns that seems to endlessly reinvent itself. The music starts out as largely tonal, but the tonality breaks down as Fate takes over and dooms the Trojans. The work is never serial, but it takes an almost Bergian view of tonality, sometimes more and sometimes less tonal as the dramatic situation warrants. The vocal lines are mostly declaimed, but with moments of lyricism that are unfogettable, such as Priam's first aria, A Father and a King, or the beautiful scene between Priam and Achilles in the third act. And Achilles war cry at the end of act two is bone chilling!

This is a great performance of this piece. Many of the singers originated the roles and sing them with power and authority. Phillip Langridge is terrific as Paris. Robert Tear is a marvelous Achilles. David Aetherton conducts this difficult score with precision and a fine ear for balances.

This is a profound opera by a major 20th century composer. If you like Britten, you should own this as well. It is increasingly looking like Tippett's masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars Visceral power & beauty coupled with stunning performances!!.......2001-06-13

I bought this on a whim, having heard only the slightest bit of Tippett's orchestral music and none of his operas. I expected the music to be "difficult," and the performances stilted, but I was oh so wrong! Yes, this is definitely late 20th century music -- often dissonant and atonal, but it is utterly beautiful, emotionally moving music. I'm a huge fan of Britten's operas, and judge all modern opera composers by his standards, and (pardon my gushing) Sir Michael is more than up to the challenge. First of all, he takes on the daunting task of adapting the Iliad into a opera libretto and manages to compress the drama beautifully into 3 acts that tell the story imaginatively, comprehensively and in a wholly theatrical manner. Second, he uses the music to heighten the sense of character by giving each persona a unique style of vocal line and orchestration (yes, this is what all composers do, or try to do, but Tippett succeeds in a way few others do). Several of the characters are accompanied by solo instruments (bravura parts of concerto-like difficulty performed brilliantly) -- Achilles by solo guitar, Helen by solo cello, King Priam by violin, etc. Three characters form a sort of Greek chorus who comment on the action and bring a sense of questioning morality to the whole.

All of the solo singers are astutely cast and sing with amazing power. Standouts (difficult to single out any of them, they're all so brilliant): Phillip Langridge is first-rate as Paris, Priam's second son -- he sings with enormous power and pathos at the same time. Felicity Palmer is velvety sex personified as Helen. Norman Bailey as Priam has a raw edginess to his sound, which lends such a sense of reality to a man pushed to the edge by fate and his warring sons. The London Philharmonia gives a virtuoso performance, led sensitively and intelligently by David Atherton. The digital sound is crystal clear and beautifully engineered: the sound couldn't be better live at the Met! Take a chance on this one, and enter into an operatic world you will never forget.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best and most easily grasped of modern operas.......1999-02-27

Contemporary opera was never the same after King Priam, a suitable irony given that the Opera is perhaps the most easily grasped by the listening public of the 5 Tippett Operas. Even so, the "crisis of King Prian" stylistically and emotionally is the germ-seed for the eccentrism yet to come in "The Knot Garden", "The Ice Break", and "New Year". Tippett's theme is the futility of choice and the nature of the impact of choice on humanity in the micro-sphere of the individual and the macro-sphere of the community and history. Tippett's unusual yet perfectly conceived recasting of the Iliad from the Trojan persepctive does more than summarize plot, but pauses to comment on the universal human potential implicit therein. A must-buy for Tippett fans and for anyone who likes opera, Greek Mythology, classical music, or a good story.

5 out of 5 stars from Solo Piano Publications.......2004-12-14

"The Undershore" is Catherine Marie Charlton's fourth album to date, and I think it's her best. The music is complex enough to be interesting with frequent playings at full attention, and soothing enough to be a very pleasant backdrop for other activities. Most of the compositions are solo piano, but several feature Nikkos on flute and/or J. Jody Janetta on percussion. Some of the music is dark and mysterious, and some is lighter and more joyful. Charlton includes her haunting arrangement of "Shenandoah," a piece that she has loved since childhood. A passionate pianist with classical roots as well as a background in jazz improvisation, Charlton's is a strong musical voice. Nikkos' flute blends with and complements the piano beautifully - a compelling duo.

The title track opens the album - a gorgeous piano solo full of emotion and a big, full sound. "The Lonely Cobbler" is about someone so lost in his work that he forgets about friends offering help. Also a solo, it is a very passionate piece with tricky rhythms and a somewhat melancholy mood. "Moon Twist" begins quietly and includes subtle percussion. Deep and mysterious, the middle section transforms into more of a swirling dance, and then trails off at the end. "Ocean's Lullaby" is tranquility, with piano, flute and water sounds - pure peace! "River Dawn" is a 4 1/2 minute version of the 60-minute composition that was Charlton's previous release a couple of years ago. "The Asymptote" is one of the math-inspired pieces that Charlton wrote in college. It refers to a line in math that can be approached, but never reached. On the abstract side, it has a wonderful, sparkling energy. "Edge of Light" is a gorgeous piano and flute duet. Free, and yet structured, I love this one! "Springshine" is a jazzy, upbeat ensemble piece with all three musicians. Light and effervescent, this is joy set to music. The CD closes with "Undershore Flow," an ensemble version of the opening track.

"The Undershore" is a great choice for those who want more complexity and depth to their piano music. Recommended!

5 out of 5 stars A stunning piece of work.......2004-03-11

    CD Title: North Light

    Year: 2003

    Record Label: A Records

    Style: Contemporary Jazz

Review: North Light is confirmation that Boston-based guitarist Steven Kirby is one of the most gifted guitarists in jazz today. From the opening quick paced, quick witted "Line Game," Kirby makes it glowingly apparent that he is gifted with astute ears equal to his deft hands. His compositional skill is impressive and democratic, leaving room for each player to stretch. There are four separately identified lineups. The team of saxophonist Chris Potter, pianist Bruce Barth, acoustic bassist Scott Colley and drummer Matt Wilson contribute the opening composition, as well as "New Song" on which Barth opens with a pensive line that Kirby echoes. Potter steps in with an equally delicate tone that Kirby joins in tandem. A brilliant composition that is played with passion. There is more than a passing nod to Metheny throughout the disc, here and elsewhere. The same quintet takes "Paradigm Shift," with a New York sidewalks intense kind of tempo. The piece is most decidedly cinematic. Barth is particular stunning here and Potter and Kirby work a stuttering magic on the number.
The guitarist is joined by Bill Vint (saxophones), Mark Shilanski (piano and organ), Keala Kaumehelwa (acoustic bass) and Mike Connors (drums), with Laszlo Gardony taking the piano bench on "Refractions," one of the standout pieces on the session. Kirby takes stratospheric runs, without going over the top. Piano comps underneath and steps out for a superb solo, the bass jogs and drums propel under Phil Woods-ish saxophone runs. Well performed by all. On "Ambiguity Tolerance," Shilanski plays a funky organ, laying nice lines underneath and taking a nice solo turn. Kirby and Vint play tandem lines, something that apparently favors compositionally. The bass and drums are solid, solid, solid and Kirby is reminiscent of John Scofield in his fluidity. On "Five For All," organ is again highlighted with some of the most dazzling electric guitar work on the disc.

Trumpeter Tony D'Aveny is added to the above lineup for a Metheny-laden "Autumn Song," giving the lineup a slightly thicker collective tone.

D'Aveny switches to flugelhorn and joins drummer Mike Connors and bassist Scott Wilfong on the title cut, a delicate, well presented piece. He steps back out for "Things As They Are," a gorgeous number that Kirby dedicates to his mother. The guitarist plays acoustic and electric tracked with himself. This is a spellbinding, Jobim-like piece that benefits from a wonderful bass solo, as well. As impressive as the guitar work is here, it shines at its most brilliant on the solo guitar closer. "When You Wish Upon a Star" is played with technique and passion that is too infrequently heard from young guitarists.

Steven Kirby is a major talent. This is a stunning piece of music.

    5 out of 5 stars A Post-Bop Jewel.......2003-07-12

Boston-based, Berklee-bred guitarist Steven Kirby decided to branch out on North Light, the follow-up to his '98 offering, Point of Balance. The earlier CD was a solidly cohesive affair; but on his second outing, he mixes things up a bit, using four different recording units to complete the CD.
This approach can be a potential minefield. The utilization of different bands can create a loss of cohesiveness--an all important component of any music CD. Guitarist Kirby solves this problem with the continuity of his compositions--eight Michael Brecker-inspired, Pat Metheny tinctured post-bop jewels.
The set opens with what might be the highlight (but there's a lot of competition for that slot here): the crisp, jaunty swinger, "Line Game," which features the "highest profile" line-up on the disc: Chris Potter on sax; Bruce Barth, piano; Scott Colley, bass; and Matt Wilson, drums. These guys have high profiles--and fantastic recent releases in the cases of Wilson and Potter--for a reason. Talent. "Line Game" is a tight, in-the-groove sizzle; with pianist Barth doing a counterpoint, an almost Cecil Taylor free flung approach, a juxtaposition that glues the song together. And speaking of glue, check out Mark Shilansky's organ work on the funky "Ambiguity Tolerance". He, more than most organists, seems to bite his notes off, creating less of an aural wash, a more pungent backing that gives a nice sting to the sound, while leader Kirby puts a little grint into his normally free flowing lines, and some very sharp, tricky sax/guitar unison work. And "Paradigm Shift" evokes memories of Chick Corea's Electric Band of the late'80s/early '90s, full of spark and energy and forward momentum.
An exciting set of sounds, a mixing of styles held together by Steven Kirby's fluid guitar work and focused, forward-thinking musical vision.

4 out of 5 stars Old Stuff Rehashed.......2005-09-10

I don't know why Dark Moor released this album. The reasoning was apparently was as a last hurrah for the departing often good sometimes awful singer, Ellysa C. Martin. It's certainly not a best of album, since their best work doesn't appear here. That doesn't mean this is not a worthwhile album to purchase.

What "Between Light and Darkness" appears to be, is a grouping of songs that didn't appear on their regular studio albums, bits and pieces from here and there. In fact many of the initial songs have the feel of medieval folk music, like "Blackmore's Night" and the fourth track, "Echoes of the Sea" is an instrumental chamber music piece. It's nice but it's not like there other albums. It's not power metal. The fifth track, "Mystery of Goddess" is back to their original style and the last three songs, all good, are bonus tracks from various previously released albums.

Overall, it's not bad. Just don't expect the usual Dark Moor sound that's on the fabulous albums, "Gates of Oblivion" and "Halls of the Olden Dreams".
