Bad Religion has for years been considered by new crops of listeners to be a vital band because they're such OG hardcore kingpins. And while the band's justly revered--they've managed to stay together for almost 25 years, all while getting better and growing their audience--"political punk realness" is not where their strengths lie. As to their political numbers, they were never quite able to pen the sort of personal yet timeless anthems that the Minutemen or the Ex did, while in terms of 1-2-3-4 punch, you'd get far more visceral thrills from the first Damned single. Of course, Southern California punk bands injected bushels of melody and hooks into their songs, and B.R. added elements of metal and even psychedelia to their own taut tunes. Their fourteenth album to date, New Maps is a terrific sounding record; at least two-thirds of it begs many repeated listens. The album's second single, "Heroes and Martyrs," is exactly what the band does best. A tightly-coiled and super revved-up anthem, it pits the energy and fast Barre chord sound of the greatest hardcore with a delicious, poppy production and doubled-up backing vocals that brings to mind Queen (or at least Queens of the Stone Age), in the very best way. --Mike McGonigal

Solid.......2007-07-31

I've been a BR fan for many years now and despite the fact that they hardly change there sound, they still write good songs...and this album proves that. What is this like there 15th album? LOL One of the Stronger ones....Just bought it today and im not dissapointed one but. If you like albums like Process of Belief, Recipe for hate, stranger then fiction, no control......I'd say you'll like/love this.

Finally, the new Bad Religion album! I held out for the Japanese version with acoustic versions of "Sorrow" and "God Song." Besides, it's not like I could just buy the American version in a store, though that didn't stop me from trying the three most likely to have it.

1. 52 Seconds: 5/10; It's actually 56 seconds, and it rocks, but it's hard to hear the words, and they aren't that good anyway. It's really one of those pointless openers.
2. Heroes & Martyrs: 6/10; It's really hard to hear the vocals on this song. The production for the whole album is kind of ugly, but this song is probably the worst offender.
3. Germs of Perfection: 7/10; It's an okay song, but like the whole album, the lyrics just aren't up to the usual Bad Religion standards.
4. New Dark Ages: 9/10; This is possibly the best song on the album, and the closest thing to a title track. Still, they clearly reused riffs from "Atheist Peace" and "All There Is" from their last album.
5. Requiem for Dissent: 8/10; The gang vocals are a nice touch.
6. Before You Die: 8/10; This song is starting to grow on me, but again, the lyrics are kind of lame.
7. Honest Goodbye: 8/10; A little experimentation here, but it's a welcome change of pace and content.
8. Dearly Beloved: 6/10; Poor production on this song.
9. Grains of Wrath: 7/10; It almost has a good message, something like Soul Asylum's "Black Gold," but this song is a little too short and ambiguous.
10. Murder: 4/10; This song should be called "Bad Ape," but it's just filler anyway.
11. Scrutiny: 9/10; It's a dead ringer for "Atheist Peace," but it's still a good song.
12. Prodigal Son: 5/10; For one of the longer songs on the album, this is really disappointing. I thought it was going to be about Bush.
13. The Grand Delusion: 4/10; So it's come to this: They're parodying titles of Styx songs. This is one of the worst songs on the album.
14. The Lost Pilgrim: 6/10; This song had the potential to be a lot better.
15. Submission Complete: 6/10; This must be one of the lectures Graffin gives his students. The concept is good, but the lyrics just don't work.
16. Fields of Mars: 9/10; As usual, Bad Religion at least manages to close the album well. The piano is a nice touch. Still, this song is missing something, and it sounds a lot like "Live Again (the Fall of Man)."
17. Sorrow (Acoustic Version): 8/10; It's a good song, but it was already kind of poppy before being acousticized. On the plus side, those annoying gunshots are gone.
18. God Song (Acoustic Version): 10+/10; The reason you should buy the Japanese version. As good as the version on "Against the Grain" is, this version is better.

In general, there aren't any really awful tracks on here. The album just has three huge problems.
1. The music drowns out the vocals on many songs. Look, I'm no producer, but I think you would turn up Greg's vocals so he's at least somewhat coherent on the verses for "Heroes & Martyrs" and "Dearly Beloved."
2. A lot of recycled riffs from the last album, which is nothing new for Bad Religion, but still, they really overdo it here.
3. The lyrics! Some songs make me question if this is really Greg Graffin. There's really not one single poetically coherent (no, that's not an oxymoron) song on here.

I think this album will go down as one of Bad Religion's worst. It's almost like a reversion, like what Metallica tried to do with "St. Anger." Songs like "Eat Your Dog," "Oligarchy," and "World War III" wouldn't be entirely out of place on "New Maps of Hell."

Also, on a personal note, to everybody who bashes "The New America," it's actually one of Bad Religion's best albums. The music is good, the range of content is superior to any other Bad Religion album, and the lyrics are brilliant. The only reason you don't like them is because they're optimistic (hey, 2000 was a pretty good year until the end). "New Maps of Hell" is kind of an anti-"The New America."

A Throwback.......2007-07-29

Bad Religion harkens the days of "Suffer" and "Against The Grain" with their latest release "New Maps of Hell". It is short, fast and uncompromising in both its musical intensity and fierce ideology. Bad Religion has long been the voice of reason in whatever tattered remains is left of the punk rock scene and "New Maps of Hell" is one of their most furious efforts to date. The tunes continue to focus on politics as well as their disdain of organized religion. The production isn't as clean as "Empire Strikes First", but I believe this was done purposely, recapturing the early 90s when they were recording on their own for Epitaph. All the Bad Religion trademarks are still here: Fast, inspired music complete with typical Bad Religion vocal choruses all which sound as good as ever. Any long-time Bad Religion fans as well as new ones will enjoy this.

Hmmmmmm well this album is the same old Bad Religion, but just some more new songs my opinion is if your a fan you gotta buy it if not a fan check it out first, but yeah it's great.

Let me just start by saying that i made an error in my review of Recipe For Hate, due to the fact that i was hungover i made the mistake of suggesting that some of the songs should be left for Generator which we all know came out BEFORE Recipe For Hate. Right now that thats out of the way onto the review.

My first impressions were that the album was good...then i listened to it again and again and it became great. BR consistentlty release punk rock that IS PUNK ROCK and not this radio pop punk emo hybrid that floods the airwaves these days.

It starts off with 52 Seconds which basically explains that Greg knows he's 'part of something greater than himself' but as always doesnt know 'what it is,' and the album ends with 'Fields Of Mars' which is a bit different sounding with a piano being implemented into the mix. I know that they used piano on their album 'How Could Hell Be Any Worse' but it sounds cleaner on this album.

The sound quality isnt that great IF you have an extra bass boost button turned on but if its off then it sounds great...not quite up to the standards of Process Of Belief but still much better than Stranger Than Fiction and Recipe For Hate.

The lyrical content isnt quite as strong as their big 3 albums but its still relevant and enjoyable to listen to.

The album is more Punk Rock orientated than Process and Empire which is quite welcome. I'd say this album is as good as Generator, Against The Grain, Suffer and No Control.

If your a BR then its a no brainer, go and buy the thing, it's awesome and its alot better than recent releases from other bands lately...cough cough Sum 41 cough cough

What Highway to Hell has that Back in Black doesn't is Bon Scott, AC/DC's original lead singer who died just months after this album was released. Scott had a rusty, raspy, scream of a voice, like he might break into a coughing fit at any moment. In other words, on crunchy, hook-heavy metal classics like the title track, and on "Get It Hot" which is more roadhouse rock than metal, he had the perfect instrument for such wild-living anthems. Thankfully the noise is so loud, you can not make out the lyrics unless you look at the record label for the text to all the songs. But even if you could understand the music, it would make no difference. This is not music, just loud noise. The music industry stopped making music twenty years ago.

The legend of Bon Scott....4.5 stars .......2007-05-15

The last of the '70's Bon Scott albums, "Highway to Hell" is arguably the best AC/DC CD, save for "Back in Black". What Bon had that his successor does not is an authentic bluesy swagger, and wolf- like howl. When Bon sang it, you believed it. This is real bar brawl music and requires a swig of whiskey and some Camels to thoroughly enjoy. These songs rock from start to finish, and with no dogs, this is just about as good as AC/DC gets. Highly recommended, especially "Night Prowler", one of the best ending songs ever recorded. Nanu-Nanu

In my opinion this is the best of the AC/DC albums. If you do not like all their music you will still find songs on this album you will enjoy.

Indeed, there were many who thought that it would take an event as cataclysmic as the one described in the album title to get these seminal '70s soft-rockers back together. NOT ALL CD PLAYERS CAN PLAY THIS!.......2007-03-20

Imagine my disappointment when I ordered this highly praised CD, only to read on the case: "REQUIRES a DTS-Capable Playback System." I have three excellent music systems throughout my house, and not one is "DTS-Capable." I had to return the product. Note that nowhere in the description does it indicate that this CD can't be played on all systems.

"The Eagles will get back together, when hell freezes over!" (Glenn Frey,
circa 1982). Well, as we all know the Eagles did get back together in 1994 (recording 4 new songs), but twelve years later they still haven't released a new album. All we've been given, since they reformed, is a total of 7 new songs, two of which are only available on a live dvd, and one they didn't even write themselves (the mediocre "Love Will Keep Us Alive"). The only worthwhile contributions have been the country song "The Girl From Yesterday" and the country-ish "No More Cloudy Days" (dvd), both written by Glenn Frey. Come on, Glenn, quit these deadbeats and go to Nashville - record that wonderful country album you were always meant to do!

The Eagles Big Comeback.......2007-02-09

After 14 years apart The Eagles got back together in 1994 to record 4 new tracks and perform in concert for a TV special. "Hell Freezes Over" is the result of this project and in my opinion this is a must own for any fan of The Eagles. 3 of the 4 new songs are great ones. Don Henley's "Get Over It" is a great rocker and pretty much sums up my philosophy on life. Tim Schmit's "Love Will Keep Us Alive" is a rather average song, but it is brought to a higher level by Schmit's unique vocal style. No one cans sing songs like this quite like him. Glenn Frey's "The Girl From Yesterday" harkens back to the bands early country rock roots, and is a good tune with great lyrics. The other new track "Learn To Be Still" by Henley does not do a lot for me. The live section of the album is solid from start to finish. In fact I would say that this material blows the "Eagles Live" album from 1980 out of the water. The recording is pristine and the performances just about perfect. The band does an all acoustic version of Hotel California that incorporates a nice twist on the original song. My all time favorite Eagles song "The Last Resort" is majestic and even better than the studio version, and serves as the crowning moment on the album. "Tequila Sunrise", "Wasted Time", "Pretty Maids All In A Row", "I Can't Tell You Why", "Take It Easy", "In The City", "Life In The Fast Lane", and "Desperado" all appear here and all sound great. Don Henley's solo hit "New York Minute" is also included. This album would serve as a fine introduction to anyone looking to explore The Eagles. It also proved that the band was back in a big way. They have continued to tour on a fairly regular basis ever since.

Overwrought and undeniable, Meat Loaf's Bat out of Hell remains both one of rock's biggest--and least likely--hit albums. The byproduct of a partnership between beefy singer Marvin Lee "Meat Loaf" Aday and fellow journeyman/National Lampoon Road Show cast member Jim Steinman, Bat out of Hell met 1977's vaunted Year of Punk with a blast of neo-operatic, Wagnerian-scaled bombast (based on Peter Pan, no less) that was as reactionary as anything the spiked set and their supporters could possibly imagine--13 million units worth, and counting. Bat seems to have thrived on the same formula that's made Andrew Lloyd Webber a multimillionaire knight: if you do kitsch, do it big. And what could be more kitschy and emblematic of the '70s than the ubiquitous "classic rock" (an overused adjective that applies all too well here) of "Two out of Three Ain't Bad" or the breathless nookie-quest, "Paradise by the Dashboard Light," replete with Phil Rizzuto calling the play-by-play? This digitally remastered edition also includes '78-vintage bonus live cuts of "Bolero" (the live show's equally over-the-top opener) and "Bat out of Hell" that showcase the production's energetic, perfectionist bent. Neither Jim Steinman nor Meat Loaf have ever been better than on this album. From the first time I heard the first notes of the opening track, I knew I was hearing something special, something that reached for the universal. Something that dared to live, ferociously.

"Bat I" is without a doubt the finest of the three "Bat" albums, achieving much more than its predecessors in 25 less minutes. It was completely plugged into the melodramatic teenage energy that presumably set Steinman on this path in the first place, and that is why it continues to rock new listeners.

Yes, I am using the word masterpiece in reference to a Meatloaf album; and I am not ashamed! Jim Steinman 'the writer of BOOH,' is one of the most overlooked songwriters/arrangers in rock and roll. Todd Rundgren, rock genius/producer/arranger/guitarist on the album, was the only person who agreed to produce the album and that was after a year of rejections for Meat and Steinman. Rundgren arranged all the background vocals as well and they sound just as good as they do on all his solo albums.

The title track is one of the best openers in history and is a Bruce Springsteen esque heavy metal track with the ultimate motor cycle lyrics and the infamous motorcycle guitar 'played by Rundgren in one take.' "Paradise by the Dashboard Lights" could be one of the catchiest songs ever written and would fit better in an Andrew Loyd Weber opera than on a 1970's rock album 'but that is the fun of the album.' "Two Out of Three Ain't Bad" is the best ballad on the album and in the words of many would "forever change the love song."

Yes, Meat Loaf has produced a lot of less-than-stellar albums in the 30 years since Bat I came out; however, this cd is truly essential listening for anyone who is a music fan and is not too proud to listen to Meat Loaf.

The long-awaited third record in the Bat Out of Hell trilogy, The Monster Is Loose, wears bombast, pretension, and pyrotechnics proudly on its album sleeve and across the bulging disc's 14 tracks. More a pop orchestral mishmash than a well-defined rock opus, Bat III is dark, seemingly hopeless at times, and über dramatic. Oddly enough, that's also its saving grace. Meat Loaf and company create a great escape into the realm of grand theatricality, with a bunch of radio-friendly rock tunes that sound 20 years old, and several lyrically memorable AOR ballads to sustain it all the way to Broadway. With collaborator (and occasional defendant in Meat Loaf lawsuits) Jim Steinman, producers Desmond Child and Todd Rundgren, the Meat man consistently has the big sound booming and his despair and his rage on to the point that listeners may feel his pain a little too often. Bat III ain't for sissies. Balanced by the powerful female voices of Marion Raven, Patti Russo, and Jennifer Hudson; along with guest musicians and songwriting help from Steve Vai, Marilyn Manson's John 5, Motley Crue's Nikki Sixx, Queen's Brian May, and others; Meat Loaf's Monster has roared the unlikely rock star back to life like a bat out of Baghdad. --Martin Keller

Bat Out of Hell, released in 1977 and produced by Todd Rundgren, is the third best-selling album of all time, with 30 million copies sold worldwide, featuring such Meat Loaf/Jim Steinman standards as "Two Out of Three Ain't Bad," "You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth" and the show-stopping "Paradise by the Dashboard Lights."

Mr. Loaf's trilogy is complete.......2007-07-12

First off I love Meatloaf, especially with ketchup. But instead of ketchup we get a lot of cheese with this release, and that's a good thing! Bat Out of Hell and Bat Out of Hell II are both classic albums, some of the best stuff in rock history--they had two important ingredients: 1. Meatloaf-one of the best singers in rock history--and 2. Jim Steinman--the second best songwriter in rock history (Bob Dylan numero uno) BOOH III is missing the later and the songs that are his on this album are 20-30 years old and some have been around the block with other singers. Meatloaf does conjure up some magic of old with Blind as a Bat, Its All Coming Back to Me Now, Bad For Good, Alive, The Future Aint What it Used to Be. Basically half the album is excellent, it just isnt brilliantly consistent as the first two. That being said it is still a must buy for Meatloaf fans and rock music lovers alike.

An Album for All Occasions.......2007-07-11

I am not exactly a die-hard Meat Loaf fan. From his discography, I have just the three recordings from the "Bat Out of Hell" series, obviously including this one.

I can tell that this is a great CD to enjoy. His collection of opera-rock tunes (like "The Monster Is Loose", "Alive", "In the Land of the Pig, The Butcher is King") blended with some soulful and touchy ballads ("It's All Coming Back to Me", "Cry Over Me" and "Seize the Night") sounds very good and decent, a perfect choice for any type of mood, just like any of the previous albums from the "Bat Out of Hell" trilogy.

Comparing this with his previous albums, one can realize that although the music and the production has changed a bit, the style and the intent was to keep the exact formula that made the previous editions to be so successful as they were.

If you attach the name "Bat out of Hell" to an album, you have to accept that it's being compared to part I and II of those. And that's a problem. Although acceptable as a pure Meatloaf album and not much worse than let's say "Welcome tt Neighbourhood" putting "Bat" on it makes it a simple case of cashing in on a legend for the last time. No wonder Steinman pulled out of this. What is lacking here is the pure adrenaline the real anger and fear that "living on the edge" enviroment both Bat I&II had (on Bat one they simply fought to live on music and on Bat II Meatloaf needed a hit to recover from his bancruptcy). Here this is blatant pompous rock by the numbers without soul. The choice of Songs is very bad (B grade Steinman and wannabe Steinman imposters) at the end I was actually expecting "Out of the Frying Pan" too.

Stay clear of this one. It's got no soul. So it is of no importance.

And stay clear of Meatloaf live to, he's lost it somewhere in the last 5 years. I saw him twice and he utterly disappointed me. He should just retire his singing career and concentrate on acting.

My husband likes Meat Loaf so I got this for him as a little gift. He loves the DVD and the delivery was prompt and in excellent packaging.

The idea of Black Sabbath without Ozzy Osbourne was a form of metal sacrilege in 1980, at least until people heard Ronnie James Dio belt out "Oh no, here it comes again..." to open the reformed band's Heaven and Hell. Dio's low-growl had a yowl, squaring frightfully with Tony Iommi's more reined-in crunch. And Sabbath was reborn, playing faster than they had with Ozzy and drawing crowds. Five tracks from Heaven make it to this set, where four from successor, Mob Rules, show up. The winners from each: "Neon Nights" and "Turn Up the Night," both quick, hefty wailers, steamrolling on sheer riffing tonnage. Dehumanizer rekindled the Sabbath/Dio marriage in 1992, showing speed metal's intervening influence--and the band holds up well, racing atop Vinnie Appice's iron-armed drums and Iommi's relentless, intentionally range-limited riffs. Then there are the three new tracks, all benefiting from 2006's richer low-end production and metal's return to a slower grind--where Iommi is more thrilling doling out sludge, as on "Shadow of the Wind," where chords sound slo-mo and blessedly narrow in range. Yes, "Ear on the Wall" closes the set in a hurried, fast- (not speed-) metal vibe, but at best the band is deliberately mid-tempo, making a raucous noise you're happy for after all these years. --Andrew Bartlett

The Mob rules, Lady Evil and TV crimes are just some of the many diamonds that shine and sparkle from the Dio years. Always in the shadow of Ozzy, particularly when Ozzy Osbourne's solo career got off to a great start, Dio was never quite able to establish himself as the "next great singer" of Black Sabbath, but regardless of people's feelings of loyalty towards Oz, Ronnie James Dio still has to be recognized for his own style and signature voice during his tenure with Black Sabbath. I am glad that this CD has been released and have been enjoying it a lot since purchasing it. The quality is top notch and this really is, in my mind a great collection of the best Dio material that comes from the Black Sabbath sessions.

... Don't Own "The Dio Years" But This is What I Think it Could've Been ..........2007-07-27

"The Dio Years" was released this past (April) to promote the up-coming reunion with Dio and the other members of Black Sabbath, who are simply calling themselves "Heaven & Hell" these days. Well, since I don't own
this CD, I can't really tell you about it that much, but I do have most
of the tracks on this set minus the three new ones.

the Heaven & Hell Project (Iommi + Dio + Butler + Appice), which will hit the shelves on August 28th, 2007.

To me Ozzy era Sabbath was the greatest band EVER ! Dio era Sabbath was (and currently as Heaven And Hell) is an awesome band . This compilation is great "greatest hits" of the Dio years. The Dio Sabbath albums were all very good . Heaven and Hell , Mob Rules and the very under rated Dehumanizer are all first rate classic metal . This Rhino cd , "The Dio Years" does a great job of representing those 3 albums . The only bad choice of songs on this cd (in my opinion) is the Live Evil version of Children Of The Sea. I think they should have put the studio version on here instead. There was no need to represent Live Evil , yes it was a decent album , but the studio version is much much stronger. The 3 new songs are all classic Dio era Sabbath songs . Get this cd !

New Dio-Sabbath songs.......2007-07-25

Basically this is very good selection from the four Dio sung Sabbath albums, however, some of my favorites are missing. But the major advantage is the three new songs, which are just fabulous. Classic Sabbath tones, dark, mystical but also feels like the last Dio album called Dehumanizer.

If you like the classic Sabbath with Dio then this is a no brainer to purchase. You get the remastered classics plus 3 new songs. I would have paid the 10.99 just for the new songs. They are very good. I wish Sign of the Southern Cross and Country Girl had been included on the CD.

A new album from Hank Williams III is always a revelation: first, because it came out at all (his relationship with his label is as stormy as the marriage of his legendary grandparents); and second, because of its content and execution. So it's something of a miracle to see a 2-CD set of some of III's most hardcore Hellbilly (as opposed to the relentless screaming of his Assjack), especially as a number of the songs had been scheduled to appear on his unreleased 2003 album Thrown Out of the Bar. Hank III calls the new offering--recorded mostly on a $500 machine, for a DIY sound--a "thrill ride into a life of sin." This may explain the fact that Straight to Hell, which opens with some old-fashioned gospel and abruptly ends with the sound of a belly-laughing Satan, comes with a parental advisory sticker. He earns it, all right, especially on "Dick in Dixie," which is not a song about a man named Richard. As usual, III spends a lot of time pointing out what's wrong with Nashville; worshiping pills, weed, and wine; and self-mythologizing. But when he gets down to business, putting his graddaddy's bray on such songs of misery as "Angel of Sin," well, all is forgiven. III also gets big points for the second disc's 42-minute hidden track, a self-indulgent but brilliant pastiche of sound comprised of a Hank Sr. song ("I Could Never Be Ashamed of You"), snippets of a Wayne "The Train" Hancock tune, a fragment of a song III wrote with ZZ Top guitarist Billy Gibbons, a little Cheech and Chong, as well as assorted sounds of a speeding train, runaway horses, pig snorts, a gunshot, and some hellfire-and-brimstone preaching. A drug-laced dream? The soundtrack to that journey to Hades of the album title? Damned interesting, either way. --Alanna Nash

This is not only the best country record I've heard in years, it's one of the best CD's I've heard in years. Lyrics are simple and the playing is unbelievable. Even my friends who don't like country pickin have stated their respect for Hank III. This is not a CD by pretty boys with good hair and fashionable jeans, this is the real thing!

Hellbilly Hellraiser!!!.......2007-06-26

To call this latest Hank III release revolutionary should demonstrate just how far country music has fallen from its roots. However, if anyone should lead the charge to regain the outlaw image while redefining the mythology of country, it ought to be Hank III.

Simply put, this is an absolute masterpiece. While Broke, Lovesick and Driftin' is a crooner of a record grandpappy would be proud to hear, Straight to Hell offers the best of all country and western has to offer. And make no bones about it, Hank III is serious about his country. Everything from bluegrass to hillbilly to southern rock can be found here.

You can also find the reverance of a young man who knows his country roots. Country Heroes is an ode to those outlaws that came before him. The men on which country has come to rest and, in times of need, fallen back on. D Ray White pays homage to III West Virginia roots while reminding Country music lovers who this music is really about.

And yes, there is the country mythology. Whether Hank has done half the things he claims makes no difference. The energy, enthusiasm and integrity with which he performs will make you believe just about anything. For all I know, he wrestled a grizzly bear with one hand tied behind his back while chuggin' a beer. Hell, that is tame compared to some of the content within.

At times the pace is so fast you can't help but wonder how they pulled it off. If you are ever trying to get your moonshine over the border, fuel up with Dick in Dixie. This steamroller of a song will have you burning a whole in your boots.

Then there is Low Down, a mid-tempo, southern rock diddy that could just as well been done by Hank, Jr. And the blues based tune, Not Everybody Likes Us, lets you know exactly what Hank III really thinks of todays state of Nashville.

'Old school' country fans may find some of the lyrics a bit harsh. There are plenty of drug references and colorful metaphors to describe sex. New country fans will not care for Hank's direct approach to the latest happenings with today's country scene. However, these are trifle matters easily brushed aside by the brilliance of this disc.

Oh yeah, and that is only disc 1. If the first disc has you reaching for the bottle, the second disc may just land you in jail. Enjoy!

Yeah, what everybody else has said and more. This CD gives me renewed faith in American music. I'm not a country music fan but I learned the words and sang along to Hank's records when I was a little kid and now, after the crap that Jr. puts out, here we are again, Hank Williams raising hell and turning things on their heads. Man, I cannot hear this CD enough. The songs are great, period, but don't overlook the musicianship, which is balls-to-the-wall great. Also a great act to see live if you get the chance.

Hell Is Right! For Me It's Freezing Over!.......2007-04-15

Now, I certainly hope you can take the word of a guy who has never been into country music. I dip into so many genres, and country I had always avoided intentionally. Listening to this cd I realized why that is. For someone who doesn't like country, the only place you will hear any country is on the radio or on tv if you happen to be within earshot(or riding shotgun in a car with some schmuck who's blaring and singing along with it). And what kind of country is played on the radio and tv, children? Like any other popular music station, 100% Grade-A crapola. Hank is certainly an eye opener. Hank reminds me of the stuff my grandparents were listening to when I was very young; Stuff that sounded like it came from the heart and soul, not pop music with fake southern accents. Hank is country the way I always felt it should sound. Hank sings about heartbreak, drinking, and his idols. He's not afraid to glorify drug use and make a slam on pop country every chance he can. Kinda like the Manowar of country if you will. The fact that Hank's singing from the heart comes right through your speakers. You can practically feel it, and his enthusiasm and love for country becomes downright infectious. You find yourself going, "Yeah, Hank! You tell em how it is!" This is a guy right at home and having the time of his life playing songs in a bar with rowdy, dedicated fans, not prancing around in an enormous arena with 80 band members and wearing one of those secret service earpieces(that ever really seem "country" to you?). Hank is "keepin' it real" as those wacky kids like to say nowdays. Not one throwaway tune on Straight To Hell, so you need not bother with that skip button, just put it on and let it run. Disc two shows us that Hank's also into experimenting with sound. Lots of acoustic tunes with noises and sound effects in between. If John Zorn were to do a country album, it'd probably sound something like this. One of the sounds is a few minutes of a locomotive. If you have a good sound system at home and turn this up, you'd swear you had a train going right through your living room. Needless to say Brooks and Dunn won't be doing a disc like this soon. But as I said before, you want the real deal, this is it. I'm definitely no authority on country music, but I know what I like, and judging by the previous reviews for this cd, I seem to be on the right track. Get yourself on track!

I Like Hank III.......2007-03-22

I really enjoy the music of Hank III. I own almost all of III's releases and each has some strong tracks on them. This one has some, too. I dig Satan is Real/Straight to Hell, Crazed Country Rebel,
and Dick In Dixie, but that's about it. That 42 minute whatever on disc
2 is a waste of space. For any disc to deserve 5 stars more than half of the songs should be good. Hank III has still not reached this yet...

At a certain point, bad taste and bombast becomes so excessive and so grandiose that they're no longer an easily dismissed irritation but an astonishing monument to the warped imagination. Such a monument is Meat Loaf's Bat Out of Hell II: Back Into Hell, the long-delayed sequel to 1977's Bat Out of Hell. Once again songwriter/producer Jim Steinman has isolated high-school parking-lot aphorisms and inflated them to Wagner-on-Broadway proportions, casting Mr. Loaf as a heavy-metal Ezio Pinza. Typical of the album's strategy is its big hit single, "I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)." Steinman piles on the guitars, drums, synthesizers, and choral voices as if he were Phil Spector producing Kiss playing the Who songbook. The rest of the album tackles the themes of teenage lust, frustration, and rock & roll fantasies in similar fashion. It's somehow beside the point to complain about the puerile lyrics, the leaden rhythms, the derivative melodies, the histrionic vocals, or the overblown arrangements. I love this CD. I had the tape and listened to it until it wouldn't play any more. The song content may not be appropriate for kids but the beat and the melody I think out weigh the content if you are an adult.

The polyrhythmic complexity of Vinnie Paul's drumming in "Psycho Holiday" and guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell's breathtaking solo in "Heresy" are examples of state-of-the-art metal musicianship. Vocalist Phil Anselmo often sounds like Metallica's James Hetfield, but his brooding croon on "Cemetery Gates" and his falsetto screams on the blindingly fast "Shattered" are more like vintage Deep Purple. ook elvis was great at what he did right sure why not then a bunch of years later the wonderful band called pantera now they had a few demos with a difrent singer he wasent that good so they hired phil this cd started heavey metal like elvis started rock n roll people didnt like it but it was the kids who loved that is why this is the first heavey metal cd to date not inckluding thoese 80s thrash band but woell by this cd if u are metal head like myself

Cowboys From Hell (1990.), Pantera's first recognised studio album (their fifth if you count their four album releases during the 1980's which the band now totally disregards)

At the turn of the 90's nobody would have expected Pantera to become one of the greatest metal bands of the decade and in fact of all time. The band had released four inconspicuous glam metal styled releases in the previous decade which brought them very little success. However, being remembered as a little known glam act was not to be Pantera's fate. At the end of the 80's the band were able to complete a drastic stylistic change to their sound, making themselves much more heavy and brutal. After then being turned down by numerous record companies, Pantera were finally signed to Atco Records (a division of Atlantic) and were able to release the beast that was `Cowboys From Hell'...

`Cowboys From Hell' is the start of a new era as far as metal is concerned. By altering their sound, Pantera all but created a new metal genre which we now come to know as groove metal or post-thrash. With `Cowboys From Hell', Pantera took the choppy and gallopy ryhthms of bands such as Metallica and Megadeth but added a great deal more heaviness, emphasis and groove to the mix. This coupled with the high pitched wails and screams of vocalist Phil Anselmo gave Pantera very brutal and uncompromising sound. This album was one of the heaviest things around at the time of it's release. `Cowboys From Hell' is a seminal metal classic in every sense of the word. The songwriting throughout the album is superb and I wouldn't say there was a single weak track on the whole work. I wouldn't say that this was Pantera's definitive, most genre defining work - that honour goes to the follow-up `Vulgar Display Of Power' - however, this for me is my favourite Pantera album. In terms of songwriting strength, I think this album wins out over all of the subsequent Pantera albums. Also, in my opinion, Dimebag Darrell, the legend himself gives his best display of guitar work on this album. Even though his guitar sound is a little more high pitched and shrill than on the later albums, he plays a fantastic array of inspired riffs, crips fills and majestic solos. In short he shows off his guitar work on this album more than any other and it is awesome to listen to. `Cowboys From Hell' is a little more thrashy than later releases, where the bands groove metal style would become more prominent. Vocalist Phil Anselmo also sings in a less aggressive style than on later album, however he does a fantastic job throughout the album. Vinnie Paul's drumming has its trademark stamp of impressive double bass and general aggression throughout the album. Rex, on bass, for me does a great job. Often the most overlooked member of the band, playing bass in a one guitar metal band is a lot harder than a band with two and he gives a great undercurrent to Dime's riffing.

This metal masterpiece gets underway with the title track `Cowboys From Hell'. This is definitive Pantera, heck it's a definitive metal classic! Dime's immortal riffs impress from the word go and this high energy opener makes for obligatory moshing every time its played. `Primal Concrete Sledge' is a short follow-up. Fast, low pitched, growling guitar work from Dime is supplemented by an unstoppable barrage of double bass from Vinnie. Phil Anselmo mixes up vocal styles very well in this song. `Psycho Holiday' is another classic off this album, the riffs are great and effortless and Anselmo's vocals scream through the speakers with intent. Dime fires out an inspired solo mid-way through. `Heresy' is another awesome song, this was one of the first Pantera songs that I ever heard. It is very gallopy and thrashy in style, especially with the main riff. There is yet another fantastic solo from Dime mid-way through. `Cemetery Gates' is the epic of the album, clocking in at over 7 minutes. A clean undistorted opening allows Anselmo to give a more understated vocal performance. This song, about the death of a lover has some more great riffs and solos. It also has an edge to it that shows of the band's glam past, however it is one of the best tracks on the album. `Domination' is an unstoppable juggernaut of a song, displaying Pantera's pioneering style brilliantly - espicially powerful is the outro with pounding chords and some high tapped guitar lines from Dime.

Next up is `Shattered'. A shorter song, it is another good thrashy tune with plenty of aggression and strong vocals. `Clash With Reality' is one of the more underrated tracks from the album and combines plenty of heavy, racing riffs with a cool melody. `Medicine Man' is much more darker in vocal and musical style. A stripped down verse led by the bass gives way to a gripping chorus with more high pitched vocal wails. `Message In Blood' is more signature Pantera with a heavy bonecrunching feel. `The Sleep' combines a more acoustic and cleaner sound to Pantera's music. The song's chorus is especially impressive and memorable. Then we finish with `The Art Of Shredding', which is for me another great showcase for Dimebag. He `really' does show us the art of shredding on this brilliant finale to one of the all time great metal albums!

So there we have it, an album of uncompromising heaviness and immense songwriting. Pantera never looked back from changing their sound and `Cowboys From Hell' was the start of a series of awesome releases from the band throughout the 1990's. This album is for me though their finest effort, a classic from start to finish. The album is well produced and each band member sounds great. Pantera defined a new aspect to the metal genre as well as a new generation of metal fans and deserve their lofty position in the minds of many. If you're looking to start listening to Pantera, I would recommend this album and the follow-up `Vulgar Display Of Power' as the place to start. I guarantee new listeners to this album will be hooked instantly, just like I was when I first bought it. An album not to be missed!

Who wouldn't love this first mass produced Pantera album? YOu'd have to not have ear drums, or a brain.

I bought this ancient cd at a thrift store, donated back 3 days later. I didn't find this cd all that great. Cowboys from hell was the only good song. everything else on this cd is just noisy boring riffs with typical guitar solos that have been done to death by millions of other players. The song structure is typical verse-chorus-verse-chorus-verse-guitar solo-chorus. This is one of the main reason I don't listen to modern day music except rap (underground). Dimebagg Darrel needed alittle more practice, He is not a Legend. Don't get me wrong, he died horribly. But come on people.. A Legend??! They are hundreds of amazing blues and jazz guitarist that have had a short life and they didn't get the praise they deserve.
Phil cannot sing (scream). He sounds like he's singing on the toilet and taking a huge dump. The drummer is so-so. And I cant even hear the bassist.
I tried to give this album a chance but I always fall sleep halfway through the album. I don't understand why is this album so popular maybe I have poor taste.. whatever it is I still give it 2 stars for the effort and the 1st track.
