Put together by Abba's own Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, Mamma Mia! manages to cram over 20 of the Swedish supergroup's songs into a threadbare plot. It goes a little like this: Young Sophie is getting married and she's trying to identify which of three men is her father. That's about it. Wisely, the musical doesn't mess around with the songs, save for the insertion of some dialogue or for having some of them performed by a man (it works amazingly well). Abba fans will jump on this import of the London production, but traditional fans of musical theater should consider it as well. After all, Andersson and Ulvaeus's songs have always felt as if they were more than isolated pop gems and actually belonged to a longer narrative. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Mamma Mia.......2007-03-22
I have not stopped playing this cd. It is just great! It makes any trip in my car most enjoyable Happy I bought it!
Mamma Mia Musical CD.......2007-03-21
This is a grand list of songs from the original musical when it was first introduced in England. The songs from ABBA are very recognizable even if you haven't seen the show. But, making a trip to NY to see the Broadway production is a plus. ENJOY!
JUST GREAT MUSIC.......2007-03-08
I RECENTLY SAW THE SHOW MAMMA MIA IN LAS VEGAS. ALWAYS LIKES THE MUSIC OF ABBA, AND THOUGH THE PLOT WAS THIN, THE MUSIC WAS WELL PERFORMED. IN THIS PARTICULAR ALBUM, THE ENGLISH ACCENTS WERE A BIT MUCH, BUT THE SONGS WERE GREAT. ALL I CAN SAY IS THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC, ABBA.
Mamma Mia.......2007-01-29
Every time I hear the music and songs it brings back memories of seeing the Broadway Show
Not good at all.......2007-01-09
This is not what we wanted. The British accents throw it was off. We just saw it in NY and this is not what we were looking for.

2006 CD single from the Soundgarden/Audioslave frontman, the theme to Casino Royale. Co-written by Cornell together with acclaimed modern Bond composer David Arnold, it's an epic piece and has a darker and grittier feel than previous Bond songs, a move away from the traditional, more orchestral approach and a reflection of what the new 007 film has to offer. Features 'You Know My Name' plus an acoustic version of the Soundgarden classic 'Black Hole Sun'. Universal. 2006.
Album Details
2006 Solo Single from the Audioslave and Former Soundgarden Frontman, which is Featured in the James Bond Film 'casino Royale'.
Customer Reviews:
Great CD.......2007-05-09
Loved this CD. I only wish that it had been on the Casino Royale soundtrack.
Buy it on iTunes.......2007-04-17
Great song, but unless you are really, really in desperate need for the acoustic version of "Black Hole Sun" buy "You Know My Name" for 99cents on iTunes. Nobody should have to pay 12.99 for 2 songs. Anyway, you could probably get the "Black Hole Sun" as an acoustic on iTunes anyway for 99cents. And if you can't just get the original for a buck, it's better anyway.
It's just disturbing to see that people paid 12.99 for this.
Great Song - Bad Decision, Chris.......2007-04-17
I was disappointed that he chose to have the song omitted from the soundtrack CD. I've never heard of that before and had really been looking forward to having the entire score rolled into one CD. So much for that. >:(
The only place to find the one song, so..what's it worth to ya?.......2007-04-12
A friend and I saw Casino Royale at the theater, and he was extremely impressed by the 'You Know My Name', enough so that we tracked down the soundtrack that night. To his dismay, it was not there, but my research revealed that it would be available later as a single; his research revealed a dispute between Cornell and Sony regarding payment for the recording. Hence, the need to get this single from Japan. The Amazon price is acceptable for what will probably become a rarity due to the dispute, and the Bond song is EXCELLENT. The other song included is a live version of 'Black Hole Sun', of interest to Soundgarden completists, but only of some interest to me, though well done. My friend is now serving in Iraq, so it fell to me to get this for him, and I am glad I did, but I wonder why neither party in the dispute could find a middle ground given the potential earning power of this fine song? You must choose, reader, just how much you like it, to justify the cost.
Bond theme.......2007-04-05
So many great Bond themes have been created over the years, my own favourites include Shirley Bassey's 3 and Gladys Knight, was unsure of this at first, but it has really grown on me and I actually did buy it. It certainly suits such a new and probably best Bond ever....

Customer Reviews:
Well worth the price.......2006-04-13
I love this CD. No, despite its name it is not the "ultimate" collection, as scarcely could be expected from a single CD. It is heavy on Mikado, as others have stated. It leaves out things I would have included and includes things I would have left out. But the performances are wonderful, traditional and all you expect from G&S. Considering the low price, it is well worth including in your G&S collection ... as PART of your collection. After the disappointment of the godawful Opera World video series (Don't buy it!) this CD is a joy and a relief.
Not Exactly "The Ultimate" Collection..........2004-12-23
It seems that a collection of Gilbert & Sullivan music that has the name "The Ultimate Collection" in its title would boast a wide range of music, but I found the selection disappointing. Half of the tracks are songs from The Mikado, and the other half is divided between five... yes, FIVE other operettas. This means that the representation from each operetta is awfully scant. I would have liked to see less Mikado and more of everything else, and perhaps some highlights from the more obscure operettas (Princess Ida and The Sorcerer, namely).
In addition, while most of the music is very well performed, some of the vocalists either go a bit overboard or, at the very opposite end, seem to lack expression. For example, this Nanki-Poo (in The Mikado) seems to be overly occupied with vibrato. Katisha's voice is annoying, and The Mikado's low voice often seems to lack feeling and humor. The other idiosyncracies, like the very frightening evil laughing during "A More Humane Mikado" and hissing during "Three Little Maids" really bug me.
Then again, I'm new to Gilbert and Sullivan, and was introduced to the music through the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, which has a noticeably less operatic style, and hardly includes "stage noise"... so perhaps all this is the norm. Do listen to the tracks for yourself, though, before you purchase the CD. Personally, I find that the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, while considerably less ecompassing, is much lighthearted and easier listening.
Where's the chicks?!?!.......2003-05-15
It wouldn't be G&S if not for the ladies - so where are they? How could they leave out Mabel's aria - or Josephine's!? The only female aria included on this disc comes from Mikado, which is the least exciting (if G&S could be un-exciting) of the three! Everything else on the recording is great, but I am still quite disappointed.
Not quite the ultimate...........2002-03-25
This is a great collection, but unfortunately it doesn't have songs from all the works of G&S. Most notably, there is nothing from the "Yeoman of the Guard". I still reccommed it however as John Reed is wonderful!!
Great Music - Questionable Selection.......2002-02-05
It's an ongoing challenge to find a recording of Gilbert and Sullivan that combines premium musicality and great theatrical performance. This recording is a true gem on both fronts. My only complaint is that for a "Best of" collection, this compilation is Mikado-heavy and scarcely touches on highlights from other masterpieces, particularly The Pirates of Penzance. This would be my favorite G&S CD of all time, of only it included tracks like "When the Foeman Bares his Steel," "Poor Wand'ring One," and "Dry the Glist'ning Tear," but then again, I guess there's no real consensus as to which are Gilbert and Sullivan's best works, and there are too many to fit on one CD.

"The First".......2007-04-15
Greetings,
I am one of the few who actually got to see "The First" -- a musical about Jackie Robinson.
I do not have this CD but wish it had the title song from "The First" ...don't think it exists anywhere. I actually still remember some dialogue/lyrics from it and would like to hear it/read the words again.
I also would like to know if any version or scenes from the play are available to do in a school. Anybody?
Have a nice day!
MISSGYDER TOTALLY MISGUIDED.......2004-07-21
This is not so much a review as a rebuttal; I was the orchestrator for this album, MISSGYDER's assertion of totally synthesized sound is totally incorrect: the charts were played by 4 reeds, 3 trumpets, 2 trombones, tuba, harp, percussion, drums, keyboards, and a string section. I sorry the sound didn't meet the approval of the reviewer labeled MISSGYDER, but I can testify to the reality of the orchestra, the players, and my scores which are at the Library of congress.
Great songs from not-so-great musicals.......2003-04-19
I was given this for my birthday, along with Unsung Sondheim, my favorite composer. I was excited, and a little bit skeptical because I've NEVER heard of these musicals. Once I started though, I was hooked. I want sheet music to so many, they're fun to sing along to, or just to listen to they great singer/actresses they got. My personal favorites are Smile, Sherry, Ragtime Romeo, and Silverware. I recommend this for all Broadway Babies and theatre buffs like me!
Poor Production Ruins Good Product.......2001-05-15
Unsung Musicals is a great idea, presenting songs from shows that didn't get their due on Broadway. However, the production of this CD is very poor, using poorly synthesized instruments and cheesy drum tracks. I could have recreated these sounds using a home software program, they're so bad! The songs themselves are good, but the album is so horrid in terms of listening value that you'd be embarrased to put this in your CD player. I recommend this CD only for students and professionals in the music theatre world as a way to learn songs you wouldn't normally hear, but other than that, I can't recommend it.
Unsung perhaps, but often wonderful.......2001-02-14
Just because a musical was not successful, that doesn't mean that there were no good songs in it (pardon the double negative). These selections may be songs that are not well known from shows in the same category, but some of these are real gems, sung by fine show singers. My favorites are "Smile" (from Smile), "Ragtime Romeo" (The Vamp), "Sherry!" (Sherry!), and "She's Roses" (Drat! The Cat!).

An Interesting Collection of Russian Tenor Arias.......2005-09-19
When people think of the great tenors, the name Vladimir Grishko does not come as quickly to mind as say, Placido Domingo or Franco Corelli and a disc with arias from Mussorgsky's SOROCHINTSY FAIR or Rimsky Korsakov's May Night may not be as tantalizing as a disc with arias from AIDA, LA BOHEME, or FAUST. While I do not expect that this disc from Naxos will steer people away from the tried and true favorites, it will certainly show people the beauty of Russian opera. It will also introduce many people to a tenor who performs some beautiful arias from a type of opera known primarily for its great bass roles.
Two of the sets of arias are from Tchaikovsky's well known QUEEN OF SPADES and EUGENE ONEGIN. Grishko does a particularly fine job with the three arias from QUEEN OF SPADES, displaying the lyrical quality of his voice. He does a good job with the ONEGIN arias as well. Since the other operas with arias are not all that familiar to most non-Russian listeners (including me), it is hard to say whether he does an exceptional job or his interpretations are on the mark, but it is safe to assume that with the beauty of his voice, his pace and control, and overall delivery of the pieces that he does them justice as well. An added bonus to this disc are the orchestral excerpts including the well known Waltz and Polonaise from ONEGIN and the familiar Gopak from SOROCHINTSY FAIR, as well as lesser known works such as Arensky's overture to DREAM ON THE VOLGA and Rimsky Korsakov's overture to MAY NIGHT.
This disc will be a great addition to any opera recording library and fans of great tenors may discover a new rising star. Since he is young and his voice is in excellent shape, he may also be a name we hear with critical acclaim in the future.
Another Naxos winner........2002-06-06
Serious music lovers with half an ear will be aware that Russian is one of the most suitable languages for singing. They'll also be aware that not many CDs come to hand which provide opportunities to hear it. All the more welcome therefore is this issue, from the adventurous and widely-distributed Naxos label, of a collection of tenor arias and orchestral excerpts from Russian operas.
The tenor arias are allocated to Vladimir Grishko, a Ukrainian tenor whose career seems to date from several prize winning appearances he made in competitions in 1989. He enunciates beautifully, his voice is free of wobble, and the tone is free and open throughout the whole range. All the orchestral forces are Russian and the orchestral items are conducted by Theodore Kuchar, who secures wider dynamic extremes that are usually heard in the popular Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov and Mussorgsky items.
A final word of praises is for the format of this CD. Juxtaposing orchestral and vocal excerpts from the selected Russian operas makes for 67 minutes of varied and well-programmed listening.

Customer Reviews:
Lovely music!.......2001-12-18
These CDs are for lovers of Irish music and of the "old-timey" sound of John McCormack. The songs themselves are lovely, and James Flannery sings them exactly as they need to be sung... in a simple and straightforward manner. The music is evocative of the sound and spirit of a long-ago time. The accompanying book gives interesting background information about Thomas Moore and also about the songs. Good listening for a rainy day or a snowy night with the fire blazing.
