Black star, whenever you're ready..........2007-05-21
Soilwork has had an impressive career and a grand discography. Natural Born Chaos is among their top two (the other being A Predator's Portrait); it nails down both the music, and the emotion, and the excitement, and the speed, and the aggression, and the chaos it mentions in its title.
The album never lets up, and even when it does, it doesn't let you go at all. The music is extremely assaulting, almost like a rape; impressive and suberb guitar work adds up to dynamic and almost hyperactive drumming, topped by Speed Strid's soaring brutal, clean and shouting vocals. This glorious assault gives the feeling of being "nailed to a wall". As an added bonus, Devin Townsend makes a vocal appearance in "Black Star Deceiver", which is an interesting and impressive duet/duel between two advanced vocalists; their harmony is unquestionable. The slower or heavier songs do not clash at all with the fast and aggressive songs, and the album's flow is perfect; as if every song was recorded in the same eternal session, the songs flow into one another and leave you wanting more. Lyrically, the cryptic writings of Speed and Townsend produce the catchy, inquisitive and metaphorical poetry that is inserted into the songs, revealing things to conceal them and vice-versa.
Perhaps the greatest value of this album is that, even when you get to know every beat, every melody, every timing and every word, it doesn't get old. I've had this one for three years, and every time I listen to it, I want more than they can ever give; like rage itself, this album is something that grows all the more when its fed, and it has to be fed.
I'd recommend this to any melodic death fan, people who were wondering what Soilwork is, those of you who want to check out something new, so basically, everyone with an open mind.
Soilwork's Greatest Moment.......2006-10-17
If it weren't for this album, I really would have cared less for this band. I remember listening to some tracks off "Figure Number Five", and I wasn't into them too much, thus I basically didn't care at all. It was all until I heard "Natural Born Chaos" that I got into the talents of this melodic metal band.
This album is basically flawless. Pure melody mixed with excellent keyboards, and elements of thrash and downtuned riffs. And the band supresses all of these together on this album to make a top-notch classic. Speed is an excellent vocalist, with his use of melodic singing in here as well. The music is like a mix of "Awake"-era Dream Theater mixed with In Flames/Dark Tranquillity's melodies as well. It's a great step up from their earlier releases, which are also great.
If you're looking into melodic metal/Gothenburg metal that is easily accessible, I recommend this album.
Brilliant.......2006-10-12
Soilwork are known for two things, melody and more melody (guess that makes one thing then). As they are essentialy At the Gates with a dab of Children of Bodom, two of my favorite bands, its easy for a fan of melodeath to appreciate this.
Pounding drums, trance-like guitars, and Dream Theater-ish keyboards back up Speed Strids furious vocals, which changed after theyre last album, Chainheart Machine, from a strained scream to much more melodic yell. Songs such as As We Speak, Follow the Hollow, and Natural Born Chaos all display a very unique formula, one which Soilwork, unfortunately, have been unable to reproduce as of lately.
My opinion? If you like In Flames, Arch Enemy, and Dark Tranquility, this is a must. If your new to Swedish melodeath, try The Jester Race by In Flames or Burning Bridges by Arch Enemy, instead.
My favorite Soilwork album so far!!! 5 stars x 5!.......2006-07-05
Im always looking foward to a new Soilwork release. These guys I can just really identify with both lyrically and musically. Natural Born Chaos is the follow up to 2001's A Predators Portrait (which was a BLISTERING and AMAZING album) and what most Soilwork fans consider to be their best.
Natural Born Chaos (produced by the muscial genius from SYL, Devin Townsend) starts off with the engaging and speedy track, Follow the Hollow. Its pretty much non-stop from there. The songs keeps a good momentum flowing and the instrumental work is wonderful. Every song on this album is a masterpiece and every listener of this album is bound to be able to pick one out that they can relate to. If you were a fan of A Predators Portrait then you will like this one.
Groundbreaking!!!.......2006-04-22
A potentially and stunned melodic death metal album. I'm not considder their best work but this album is their most complete. Incredible melodies, excellent musicianship, stunning guitar riffs. An awesome record by this guys!!
