4 out of 5 stars Majors for Minors - Classical Music Nursery Rhymes.......2002-04-27

I come from a classical music background and wish to congratulate the producers of this CD. For the first time ever, to my knowledge, here is a CD that's incredibly straightforward and extremely simple - perfect material for babies and young children. By no means a classical music masterpiece but the entire easiness and simplicity is perfect to ease any child into a positive state of mind as it does with my baby and toddler. For the Bambino's, I say this is a cut above Mozart. ( Give 4 stars)

5 out of 5 stars Majors for Minors- classical music nursery rhymes.......2002-04-25

...My wife and I have used the Majors for Minors series for the last three years, we have two small children and can only praise the positive results our children have had from these CD'S.

I can only assume that G Spanos is a music academic and authority on classical music, however from what I know of the research that went into this series the mucis is purely a classical interpretation and the success is actually created by sound frequencies and specfic patterns which the producers have used.

The fact that the product uses digital instruments as opposed to authentic instruments from what I understand has no bearing on how this product works.

I admit as a lover of classical music myself that there is far supeior available, however as a product designed to calm and assist with active and passive situations during a childs daily life - there is nothing better in the market (from what we know of) and we have used many other products designed for this purpose wthout success!

My knowldege of Majors for Minors workings is probably better than most average person, due to the fact that when I was in the UK on business, I read an article in a London newspaper which gave detail on how the produsers of this product went about their research and they admitted that their compilations such as the nursery rhymes and the lullabies would sound rather monotonous to the average adult, however the effect on children under three is excellent.

We challenge G Spanos or any parent with young children to use this product and not experience the incredible benefits to their children as my wife and I have found. In fact we would go as far as saying that the principles of this product should try and do alot more to make Majors for Minors more known to the rest of the world.

I bought this CD for my 5th child, who has special needs when he was 5yrs old. I had struggled with 5yrs of disturbed nights; frequently up for 2hr stretches. I would play it in the sitting room whilst cuddling/rocking my son. I would concentrate my mind on the music, rocking patting, walking in time with the beat, until he slept. Because my son frequently needs attention during the night he sleeps in our room, and for the last year or so whenever he wakes at night I play this music softly, it does not disturb my husband and it gives me a focus on which to concentrate instead of mulling over the day ahead or worrying about matters. It has been our nightly friend and companion. Please send us your comments about Majors for Minors.

1 out of 5 stars AVOID THIS CD.......2002-03-11

DO NOT BUY THIS CD !! This cd purports to be Classical Music Nursery Rhymes. It is nursery rhyme melodies, but completely homogenized pablum. It is not classical, it is synthesizers - the worst kind of muzak versions, with the melodies practically hidden away in the synthesized "new age" (in the worst sense of the word) background/easy listening, mellow accompaniments. It might be ok for putting kids to sleep, but I can think of much better music to do that, that is real music. If you are looking for real versions of nursery rhyme melodies, this is NOT the cd to buy.

5 out of 5 stars the joy of beauty.......2001-04-08

"The meadows are clothed with flocks And the valleys are covered with grain; They shout for joy, yes, they sing." (Psalm 65:13)

In all of my days spent on this journey up until now, I have never heard more beautiful music than that of Carol Thompson's Harp playing. It echoes with the music of the Celtic landscape as well as the hearts of the Celtic people from whom many of these songs descend. It is a wonder.

The Bible speaks of the boy David playing his harp to soothe the wrath of King Saul. If David's playing was anything like Thompson's playing of this music...I can see how something like that might work.

From the opening strains of Bonny Portmore to the last note of O'Carolan's Farewell, Thompson's CD "The Faerie Isles" is filled with the utter joy of beauty. It is no secret that Dorian is my favorite label...I have yet to be disappointed by one of their discs--but this one is exceptional indeed.

I give "The Faerie Isles" my highest recommendation.

Perhaps some day Dorian Recordings will turn out a poor CD, but among their more recent releases are four sets that feature harpist Carol Thompson. The artist was born in this country of Anglo-Welsh-Irish background (as the copywriter tells us). Part of her technique is to let her ornamentation come out of the melody rather than merely appending it, and to execute her chords with a "downward roll" rather than an upward as in classical harp playing.

So with Amazon.com's permission, I will submit this same write up to each of the four webpages that deal with these albums.

. (DOR-90013) has Ms. Thompson accompanied by another harpist and a wooden flute; and the extra coloration is welcome. Here we have 18 cuts (64 minutes) of Celtic harp music, the more familiar of which are "Brian Boru's March" and "Gentle Annie." The notes are of a general nature.

The subtitle of (DOR-90120) shows the program (53 minutes) to be much like the other sets, including the familiar "All Through the Night" and "The Ash Grove." I spot even one or two selections among the 19 here that appeared on earlier recordings. But it is all so winningly played that one must not carp. The notes are in several languages and a bit shorter than usual to keep the booklet from being too thick.

(DOR-90176) has 71 minutes consisting of 21 cuts such as "She Moves Through the Fair" and "Snow on the Hills." This set tends to be more satisfactory than the last one because of the presence of accordion, concertina, wooden flute and second harp; although by now one tune is starting to blur into the other.

The fourth Dorian set in order of recording is (DOR-90240) in which our harpist goes it alone with a short program (51 minutes) of 12 cuts, half of which are medleys. Included are "Twisting of the Rope," "Blind Mary" and the title song. This time the notes give information about each song.

Again I must emphasize the excellence of the playing and how beautiful each CD is by itself. But as with so many artists that concentrate on a small part of the music spectrum, each new offering tends to be predictable and one gets a strong feeling of déjà vu. But to be fair, these sets were released with considerable time between them and only people like reviewers now and then get to hear them all at once.

So which to choose? I would go for the two where you get more than the sound of a single harp first. But I really think that enthusiasts of British music will want to have all of these sets sooner or later.

And keep an eye open for the fifth entry in this series: (DOR-90273) that is not yet available at the time of this writing.

    Album Description

The Five Blind Boys of Mississippi hold a high ranking in the realms of gospel groups from the ''Golden Age,'' having featured the distinctive ''hard'' tenor lead vocal of Archie Brownlee since the start of their recording career (then as the Jackson Harmoneers) in 1945. They sang up a storm around the southern sates of the USA through the 1950's, having signed with Peacock Records in 1950, and their eight singles for the label yielded an R&B chart hit with 'Our Father' in 1950. Two of the Blind Boys' LPs for Peacock, Precious Memories and Father I Stretch My Hands to Thee are combined for this re-issue, having been collectors' items for many years. The dynamic call-and-response vocals, laced with Brownlee's searing screams which would influence countless soul singers, served to inspire their audiences through the decade. Following the death of Brownlee in 1960, Henry Johnson carried on the torrid tradition, as can be witnessed in the opening eleven tracks of this anthology, with the great Archie Brownlee featuring on the other selections. Features two very rare golden age gospel LPs: reissued and on CD for the first time. Highly influential vocals on later soul artists and in the top echelons of Gospel artists.

Not to be confused with Archie Brownlee's Five Blind Boys of Mississippi, these Alabaman blind singers met at a school for the blind in the late 1930s. Clarence Fountain, whose range was not very wide, led the group with deep shouts, lofty cries, and rumbling, emotional singing that seems to have the power to move mountains. The group stick to their well-known "mother" theme (their first hit was the mind-blowing "I Can See Everybody's Mother, But I Can't See Mine" in 1949) on these two early '70s LPs, issued here as one CD. No less than three songs mourn the death of a matriarch--the bluesy, brilliant standby "Alone and Motherless," the moody, slow-tempo "When I Lost My Mother," and the revved tearjerker "Goodbye Mother." The group singing is tight, the tempo and material varied, the minimal percussion perfectly complementary, the guitar playing subtle, sparse, beautiful. But the real treat is when the five singers wind each other up, like a spinning top, into ecstatic realms of entwined shouting, singing, and praising that will please any ear. --Mike McGonigal

5 out of 5 stars "My Colour is Black to the Blind...".......2005-08-14

There is no easy way to describe the sonic assault that is Vader. I would say a combination of Slayer Iron Maiden and Morbid Angel. A Death Metal band that originates from Poland, they combine insane drumming, guitar riffs with plenty of hooks and unique vocals that are easier to be heard and understood than your average Death metal band. This album titled Black to the Blind just seems to get heavier and faster and just better as you progress through it. By the time you get the title track, you are just amazed. You are awestricken once the album finishes and only want to either press the play button again or listen to more of their stuff. If you haven't experienced the unique sound of Vader, then I suggest you click the buy button for this release now. One thing I found to be interesting was that in the lyrics booklet, there's a small amount of information above each song as to give an idea as to what the song is about. Doc's Drumming as I stated before is inhuman, and definitely has a unique unmistakable style of playing. If you love listening to metal for the drums, then you must check him out. Sad he's not in the band anymore; I wonder where he is now. Peter and Mauser on guitars create monster sounds that blend together perfectly, with the song True Names being a great example of that. Their longtime producer could be considered to be a secret band member as he actually writes the lyrics for most of their songs, and he does a great job at that. I also suggest you pick up their Live in Japan album which was recorded when they were on tour for Black to the Blind and truly highlights Doc's Drumming skills. Vader is a must if you like death metal. Even if you are only a casual death metal fan, you'll become a Vader fan instantly.

The only flaw: on Vader's website there is an eleventh song titled Anamnesis. This isn't on the CD, probably available on an Import. On my version (released by Pavement Records) the lyrics booklet says it is there and even gives the lyrics for that song, however it isn't on the CD and it isn't listed on the back of the CD case. This version sold on Amazon.com is also from Pavement Records and therefore probably contains the same flaw even when it lists there to be 10 songs and not the missing Anamnesis. Fortunately the missing song can be found on their Kingdom EP, so don't panic, you can pick the missing song and a few others on that record. It just means more Vader to add to your collection. Hoped this helped.

      5 out of 5 stars Sickness.......2005-07-16

And the intro of Mauser. Vader wise, that is. F*ckin' A, this album kicks nuts, I love this cd. It is insanely fast and the riffs stick in your head for days. Awesome cd, long live death metal.

5 out of 5 stars brutal sonic abuse !!!.......2002-03-28

If you can go back in time to 95/96 you'll probably remember alot of stupid comments like "death metal is dead" when the dm scene suffered from giant wave of black metal plaguing the globe but there were few bands who stayed around and believed in death metal, they were Vader, Cryptopsy, Nile and Krisiun who re-invented death metal with sheer technicality and brutality which made death metal prevail til the next millenium.
"Black to the Blind" - This album is a constant blast from start to finish and they really execute it like no one else can. Vader blend death, grind and thrash metal into an one malevolent monster of quality album after album. The vocals of Pete are a bit dry but that's what makes them original and even better than the typical gore soaked growls. He's not trying to rip off Tom Araya for the fact. At this time I rarely find release that is as good as this. I mean face it, all other bands had their share of great albums until they became dull and repetitive (morbid angel, deicide, napalm death, cannibal corpse, etc..)but not with Vader. Every one of their albums is a step up just like Litany is harder pounding than "black to the blind". I don't really want to mention how technical and skilled musicians they are because it's evident in the 1st seconds once you pop this piece of plastic in your stereo and i can tell you this: There are probably 5 maybe 7 bands who are so good their albums are worthy getting even for one song ! but fortunately you get the whole thing and what a package that is.

5 out of 5 stars The apex of death metal!.......2001-08-09

You like Slayer? You like Morbid Angel? You wish that somehow they could be one band? Well, here's the answer to your prayers. Vader takes the extreme thrash of Slayer and the oldschool death of Morbid Angel, and compiles it into one crackling package that is simply the greatest death metal band of all time. Peter and Mauser crank out an awesome dual guitar assault, and Doc's drumming is unbelievable. A lot of it is the standard "tap tap tap" death drumming that Morbid Angel practically invented, which can get a little monotonous, but there's also more complex drumming that brings Dave Lombardo to mind. The best songs are "Heading for the Internal Darkness", "Carnal", and "Distant Dream", but all of them are pretty good. Many seem to consider "De Profundis" to be Vader's best album, but I believe it's a close second to this one here. But, they're all good, really. I can't believe I'm the first person to review this album in over two years! If you are a death metal fan, you must own this album.

4 out of 5 stars Inhuman Drumming, Godly Guitars...........1999-01-04

I didn't think I would enjoy this album, because of all the negative things going around lately about Vader, but I must admit, it's pretty GOOD! The only thing that wasn't godly on the album was the vocals. At one point in the album the vocalist almost sounds like he's trying to be like Jonathon Davis of Korn but fortunately goes back to his pseudo-deathmetal style. However; this album contains some of the coolest riffs I have ever heard out of a death metal band... The first song blows you away with its music, as does the rest of the album following. The production is excellent. The drumming is done in blast-beats and is played unbelievably fast... INHUMAN!!! Once you can look beyond the weak vocals, which are kind of a growl/yell crossover, you will like this album... This is destined to become classic. Straight Forward death metal, old-school style, with talent, aggressiveness and murderous attitude. Hail Vader!

What can you say about a group that has been going strong since the 1940's. This is Gospel the way it is meant to be heard. No electronic wizardry. There aren't too many groups that when they play, the live audience is so physically overwhelmed, there are waiting ambulances to tend to them. This is typical of the music you will hear on any given Sunday in a real down-home Southern Gospel Baptist Church, as also in New York where I am from. I also suggest listening to their Live album recorded in different venues in Europe. The Five Blind Boys of Mississippi was the inspiration for many of the modern day groups you hear today. I do not think you will be disappointed.
