Quite a different sound.......2007-07-07
I'll admit, I admire the folk music, but I can't say that I'm the biggest fan. I listen to more of the general rock music, ranging from the classics to the more aggressive modern metal/screamo combinations. But THIS, this is practically a class in itself. The mixing of folk and metal sounded very bizarre when I heard of the concept, but when I actually heard the music, I quickly became a fan.
Just the imagination and originality of it is phenonmenal. Not only that, there has to be a lot of talent required, considering that the artists need to be skilled not only with the folk instruments, but also with the modern ones as well.
Finally.........2006-11-21
Spirit, the debut full lenght from Eluveitie, can be hard to describe. The album, in my opinion, suffers few, if any, flaws. The flutes, the whistles, the pipes, the accordions, the hurdygurdies, the whatever-other-obscure-folk-instruments are all perfect. Good folk metal is something hard to truely achieve (most of the good ones are mainly viking/scandiavian metal bands, i.e. Odinir, Korpiklaani, Finntroll even). But enough for Scandinavian Folk...we needed some good celtic metal. I'm sorry, but Cruachan and Skyclad (and many others) have all failed to make an amazing celtic folk metal album, one of the standards of Spirit. This album manages to be original and complex in a genre of music (I mean metal here, not just folk metal) that leaves little room for something different. A mind blowing work and a must have. Spirit is one of the best metal albums, ever.
Resurrecting the sounds of rituals and celebration.......2006-08-06
Spirit is an intense musical alliance of the old and new. Eluveitie started as a project to reconstruct a helvetian(continental) celtic dialect. Resurrecting the sounds of rituals and celebration to bind up in union with the violent intensity of metal, Eluveitie has emerged as the champion of the field!
With enough instruments to make the Chieftains envy, this album is the standard for originality. The instruments are well balanced, the guitars don't claim any superiority but leave enough room for your ears to capture the sounds of flutes, pipes, horn, whistles, fiddles, mandola, hurdygurdy, gaita, and accordian.
Six of the eleven songs are sung in english.
The list is as follows:
-Spirit
-Uis Elveti (This track was on Ven)
-Your Gaulish War
-Of Fire, Wind, and Wisdom
-Aidu
-The Song of Life
-Tegernako
-Siraxta
-The Dance of Victory
-The Endless Knot
-An Dro (instrumental)
This is the second album from Eluveitie, the first was Ven.
I personally like the album Ven over Spirit but I know most would disagree with me. I know all who have heard Eluveitie would agree with me that you should buy these albums while you can.
Mindblowing pagan metal..........2006-06-22
This is quite some mindblowing stuff concidering that 'Spirit' is actually Eluveitie's debut album... The quality of their EP of 2004 was OK, the songs were good, and now with 'Spirit' they are perfected... Violins, accordions, fluits, whistles, bagpipes (or whatever) give their very recognizable and distinct sound to the rough metal Eluveitie makes... Eluveitie means 'I am an Helvetian', a continental Celt... Some songs are sung in Celtic, others in English... All are about Celtic culture and wars...
I love Chrigels voice! His clean vocals and his screams are both awesome...
You've got to hear this band playing live! It's a party every time I see them...
This is one great band and this is definately one of the best releases I know of...

Product Description
"The War That Plagues The Lands is an incredible concept album that ranks right up there with some of the best bands in the genre... The guitars are brought forward much more on this disc and the keyboards, while still a vital part, are pushed back in the mix allowing for a much more extreme sound. Vocally, Shamgar has improved greatly with some horrifying blackish shrieks. It seems like the biggest improvement is that he's upped the aggression factor in his vocals. Also present are some occasional death growls, eerie chanting and some beautifully haunting female vocals. All of the different vocals are placed perfectly in every instance and never sound forced. Musically, the band never settles for one sound as the songs range from blistering, to mid-paced, to slow and somber; all fitting nicely and creating an extremely dark atmosphere with a very cohesive feel. My favorite tunes on this CD are "A Dragon's Children", "And Thus It Burns" and "Of Slumber and Death". But really, there is not a downer on the whole album. If all this wasn't enough, the production, packaging and artwork are top notch. When classic black metal releases are mentioned in the future, this disc will stand tall right alongside masterpieces like Horde's Hellig Usvart and Antestor's The Return of the Black Death." -The Whipping Post

christian black metal? is that possible?.......2007-07-26
i've been too busy flipping out on posers (ehem, cough, As I Lay Dying haters, cough) to actually review anything lately, so i figure i should start again with this awesome album. this makes 3 inches of blood look like slipknot. the vocals are so high pitched it's unreal and the guitar just kills. if you like black metal or are a fan of 3 inches of blood or megadeth's vocals, definantly get this album. no one has ever heard of this band for only one reason. they're christian. so if you like christian metal this would be a good album to buy to expand your taste from the hardcore and metalcore most christian metal bands play into black metal. ROCKS!
My favorite album by my favorite band.......2005-12-18
Simply put I love this album. This band is heavy, powerful and extreme black metal. Unfortunately they don't get the respect they deserve in the black metal community for one reason...they are Christians. Speaking as a fan of Emperor and Dissection this is head and shoulders above them all. When I got out of the black metal scene and wanted to find Christian alternatives, Slechtvalk was one of the first I found. I realized I had found a band that was the equal (and superior) of Emperor. This is a must-have for any black metal collection.
Extreme Excellent Black Metal.......2005-10-26
It's sad that because the lyrics are positive this band may not get much notice. When it comes to black metal this band is awesome. Not really breaking new ground but excelling in the genre none the less. I don't always agree with the "professional" reviews Amazon has, but this reviewer nailed it. If you like extreme metal at all this band deserves a listen.

Customer Reviews:
Great Record!.......2006-06-16
First, I would like to address something that Deathbox13 wrote a few reviews down. The reviewer is calling My Ruin an Otep rip off.
That reviewer does not know their history! Tairrie B started off as a rapper and was later in a rap metal band called Manhole. She rapped, screamed, and did spoken word in Manhole. Manhole's first release All Is Not Well was released in 1996. Otep's first EP Jihad was released in 2001. Who is ripping off who? Please do your research...
This is My Ruin's finest hour. Tairrie sounds AMAZING on this record.
Beauty Fiend.......2004-11-17
Well, I find myself to be in love in all of My Ruin's albums, and this one is no different. The band has a great sound, I'd highly recomend this CD for anyone who you know who enjoys their style.
Ok.......2004-10-29
This is an ok band. Nothing special simialiar to Otep, but Otep is MUCH better and its the best band ever. Well at least its better than Kittie which suks. Less than half the songs are good. They have some spoken word tracks and rapping like otep, can u say ripoff! So overall only about 4 or 5 ok songs.
Appallingly bad.......2004-08-13
*Yawn* Yet another dismal album by a band whose members try so desperately to look gothic and scary in the booklet. This album really is predictable. You've heard it all before in the form of Slipknot, but there was at least a trace of melody with them, unlike My Ruin. I really don't see how anyone could class this album as good music when there's clearly nothing to hear other than a disorganized mess of screams. Tairrie B or whatever her name is cannot sing. Ok she can moan and groan and squeal but its all done with the aid of various vocal machines. The songs are quite frankly appalling. "Beauty Fiend" wouldn't have been so bad had it been a one off but no, every other song sounds the same. There are also two cover songs which are embarrasingly bad compared with their originals. The song "Miss Anne-Thorpe" could have been good if only Jessicka (from JOJ) had sung it all by herself. Just like Kittie, My Ruin are another band who continue to go from bad to worse but it's to be expected when there's not an ounce of talent involved.
Quality Music.......2004-06-27
By reading other people's reviews about this album which I've listened to. Tairrie B goes further into her thoughs a feelings not only on feminism, which I feel is a positive aspect (which have stated on my review of the prevouis album) but deep personal feelings about people shes known in genaral pure brilliance. There is a real intelligence in every single track and the two most prominent for me are "Miss Ann Thrope" with Jessicka of "Jack Off Jill" and "Scarling" and truly real, kinetic song which hence the name states her views on humanity. The other track is "My War" which is powerful in its message to person who has gone behind her back. A feeling we all can relate to.

Not quite what I expected.......2006-11-11
I am an avid supporter of Christian artists, and I am a huge metal fan. I have to say, however, that this album was a complete disappointment. It's unfortunate that the audio clips on Amazon are low quality, otherwise I would have been able to discern that the drummer uses an electronic drum set. The drumming is very poor- not just the poor quality of the electronic set, but at many times he is off tempo and doesn't play with the instruments. The vocals are laughable (I actually laughed while listening in the car). Don't get me wrong- I love both high-pitched and gutteral screams for vocals, but this was absolutely horrible. The high-pitched vocals sounded like a Smurf talking quickly, and the low-pitched vocals sounded like a Smurf trying to sound manly. The lyrical content is not all that uplifting, either. It seems as though they are trying to trick their intended audience of typical black-metal fans into thinking they're a traditional "Hail Satan"-style band, but then throwing in a few "gotchas" to indicate they indeed are Christians. From the other three reviews posted on Amazon, I can tell that Frost Like Ashes does have a following, so perhaps you may enjoy this CD afterall. If you're a typical fan of melodic metal, though, I doubt you will be interested in this offering.
will crush you.......2006-06-02
Wow. The perfect mix of very technical death/black metal and with a few moments sounding like something off Ride The Lightning, you can't go wrong here. The music will punish with its speed as the lyrics call Christians to arms. I love it. This is as quality as any demonic drenched music and has a message of hope. For all fans of EXTREMELY heavy music. After having a hard time getting this album out here's hoping their next album goes more smoothly for them.
Wonderful..........2006-04-04
After waiting for a very long time for this cd to come out, I am very pleased at the content. They have advanced musically and the sound is wonderful on this release. The lyrics are very Christian, denouncing Satan and uplifting other Christians. If you like heavy, fast, brutal Unblack metal, this is a great release. God bless!
... from the dead ..........2006-02-10
After being announced something like two years ago this album has finally been released. It was originally set to be released on Sounds of the Dead records [who released their "Pure as the Blood Covered Snow" EP] but the founder of that label vanished from the face of the earth and the future of "Tophet" looked bleak ... it was put on the back burner and a new demo / EP was announced, but then came the great and mighty hero Psychoacoustix Records to rescue "Tophet" ... well unfortunately that didnt work out so well either as the release date was pushed back several times [eventually turning into something like 7 months] and then the head of the label died and the entire label suspended operation. The label did actually get some copies made at the tail end and that is why the Psychoacoustix logo is on the back cover ... but this was NOT released by that label, rather it was released by the band itself.
All of that means nothing to the actual music, but I find it interesting. The music here is much like that on "Pure As ..." only more technical, more advanced, heavier, faster, more intense ... you name it, it's more that way. The production is MUCH better, everything has a fuller, richer sound while still staying away from that 'over produced black metal' sound ... yes, keyboards play a much more prominent roll on this album than they did on the earlier EP, but rather than creating the music [leaving the guitars buzzing around somewhere in the background] they enhance the music, giving everything more atmosphere ... I am not a big fan of keyboard heavy black metal, and I like them on this album, so that says something I think.
All in all I have to say that this cd has gotten a LOT of play time since I received it a couple weeks ago, the mixture of black and death metal with just a touch of thrash here and there is pretty much perfect. I highly recommend this album, especially to those who liked "Pure As The Blood Covered Snow" ... if you liked that one this one will blow you away.

COOL! - here are some meanings I get out of the songs..........2006-02-19
I really liked this album, although they could have improved on some of the slow songs here and there. I realy loved East West's first album I must say. Do not misjudge the lyrics though. In the song "Murderer" you may be hearing violent lyrics, but keep in mind it's not "literally" in the view of the singer...but in the view of a "Murderer" which is why it's called "Murderer" and it illustrates the emptiness and perhaps helplessness those type of people sink into. Because Murderers are still people too and I think that song shows an extremely interesting and different point of view of how a Murderer feels so many mixed emotions. An example from the song is near the end they sing "Nothing Breathes inside... Nothing Lives inside..." as the song fades out.
The 1st song "Vacant" is representing an example of a mistake/sin that grows and gets larger and reaps into a result of chaos: "Feed a lie, Watch it birth, Kiss the Dirt"
"Brutally Wrong" is something that's harder for me to interperet however - what sticks out most in the lyrics is "What could you ever gain...?" - "...Brutally Wrong it's all a game."
If your really really really liked their first album, you may also like this one, however you may like their first one better because it's "Pure EastWest Coolness" - but for me there wasn't that much in this album to dissapoint me. I just think for some of the slow songs they could have tweaked them a little better.
But overall it's a good album.
Not quite as classic as TLIGG, but still awesome.......2005-12-13
The Light in Guineveres Garden is one of my favorite metalcore alums of all time. I got this CD because i wanted more of East West; while this CD isn't quite as good as the album TLIGG it still holds it's own and I really enjoy it. It's heavy, downright catchy at times but certainly not main stream or generic. I also love the diversity of East West's albums; The songs range from great melodic lines to growling and the mood of the songs vary just as much. just compare 'brutally wrong' or 'vacant' to 'the final say'and you'll see...
Confused.......2005-07-20
I just got my CD in the mail today and I'm actually not sure what to say. I listened to it all the way through and it's so different from the first. I was expecting in your face screaming, and it's more mellow. Also, I didn't understand the lyrics to most of the songs. They are SO random. I'm not disappointed, I liked a few songs, but it's not my favorite.
Awful.............2005-07-04
East West's "Hope In Anguish" is one of the worst CD's I have heard. Period. I listen to just about everything, but when a band abuses horrible power chords, bad drumming, and the stereotypical 'metal' voice with a bunch of 'dark' cliches, it just makes for bad music. This album just doesn't cut it, and it's enough to make me steer clear of the rest of their stuff.
Hard Core.......2005-01-18
This disc starts off in your face and and stays there for the duration. Drumming is excellent in tone and technique. Not too much innovation but what do you expect from and in your face metal album? I was hooked on the first cut almost immediately and it does not dissapoint on repeated listening. The rest of the disc will please the metal fan (even old metal fans). Some semblance of Helmet here and there but I believe to be better. No in your face preaching for either side (light or dark).

Decent studio collection but I think I got gypped........2005-10-25
i like this album but i only have songs 1 to 7 on my cd, which looks different on this page. perhaps the waldenbook people should go into more detail about their products.
anyway, yes, i like this offering (although) a short offering, i like it none the less.
there's like 1 or 2 songs that are on diabolical conquest which i think is the next (3rd) album after this and the version on this album is much better.
Great death metal album.......2005-09-23
First off, everybody on this site thinks bands like children of bodom, dark tranquillity and in flames are all death metal, so here's an enlightenment: they're not! Ok now that that's out of my system, I shall continue... this CD is one of the best and least boring death metal albums I've ever heard. Great death cover on Scream Bloody Gore. Highly recommended CD for any death metal fan!
Another death metal milestone!!!.......2005-05-16
This brutal ep has one of the best sounding Death covers I've ever heard. Also, it features two classic tracks (Shadows Of The Ancient Empire and Forsaken Mourning Of Angelic Anguish), and showcases this band being much more aggressive and hateful with each release. The four live in the studio tracks were really cool as well. Buy it now!!!
The best to get after their first.......2001-12-21
This live album takes one of the better Incantation lineups through some of their best material in an adjusted format to maximize impact. The original lineup from the first album perform most of this work, covering songs from the previous three albums including the highlights of "Diabolical Conquest." Recommended for anyone who likes abstract but visceral metal.
Not bad, but nothing special either..........1999-08-21
Well, the only other Incan. CD I own is Diabolical Conquest, and these two albums sound pretty much the same. But yes, Craig Pillard did the vocals on this one (wow, that's a deep growl!)... my favorite track on this is actually not one of their songs... if you get this, check out their rendition of Death's "Scream Bloody Gore." But, hey, I picked this one up free thanks to a gift certificate, so there you have it...

I understand the words!.......1999-12-19
First time I've heard a recording of this where I not only loved the brilliance and clarity of the music, but I could understand the words. Very crisp, very lovely. Even though I own another CD of this piece, I'm ordering this version.

Fasedown Rocks!!!.......2006-04-19
This band has really matured over the years. It's self titled album really impressed me. However I was excited when I heard they had released a 2nd album since it had been five years since they had recorded anything new. I knew I had to check this one out because this band a lot to offer. Sure enough I was very pleased with what I heard from this band who really knows how to drive a sledgehammer to your skull with their heavy, pulsating guitar riffs and their insane vocals. Also their lyrics are really good too.
You really need to check this band out because they have a lot going for them and will no doubt become big in the music industry. This cd is perfect for every hardcore fan and needs to have a place in your cd collection.

Great, definitely go with this and TAC.......2005-08-31
Right now, there are four official English-language versions of Les Miserables: the Original London Cast Recording, the Original Broadway Cast Recording, the Complete Symphonic Recording, and the 10th Anniversary Concert Recording. Les Mis' addicts are best served by purchasing all recordings, as they showcase different stages (as in the OLC and the OBC) of the development of this mega-musical, as well as the interesting variations in presentation and performances by the different casts and orchestras.
If you're the average musical-theater listener who can't afford to buy all available English-language recordings, however, my advice would be to get the CSR (due to the fact that it's "complete") and the TAC recording (due to the fact that performer- and performance-wise, it's leaps and bounds better than all of the other recordings). You deserve no less.
Awesome.......2005-07-03
I can't believe all the negative comments about Gary Morris. He is so much better in the role than Colm Wilkinson. I've seen Gary perform the part three times and there is NO better Jean ValJean (seen the play 14 times). It's an international cast and some of the accents do take time getting used to. But the power of the music supercedes it all. Listen with your heart people. It's so incredible.

"Les Miserables" is a marvelous musical; a stunningly faithful interpretation of Victor Hugo's masterpiece, with an inspiring storyline and unforgettable characters. There are 2 reasons for buying a Les Mis CD - (1) you've seen a performance and want ONE CD to remind you of it or (2) you've become a les Mis junkie (like me) and want multiple versions so you too can hold forth on the rival merits of Andy Warlow vs Michael Maguire, Patty LuPone vs Ruthie Henshaw, Frances Ruffelle vs Kaho Shimada vs Lea Solonga. If you are in the first category, you really want the Tenth Anniversary Concert. The TAC has the complete storyline (albeit slightly abridged), it was recorded live (so there's an unique intensity and chemistry between performers), and from top to bottom it has by far the best cast.
However, if you're a serious Les Mis fan, you should buy this CD (in addition), simply because it does have the complete score. (The trouble with THAT is that it includes practically the only misstep in the whole script - if Jean Valjean has his number branded on his chest, then how is it credible that someone else will be convicted in his place?) I bought it for that reason and to hear other interpretations of the roles (in particular Andy Warlow's). I have all 4 versions, and they have all have their pluses and minuses, but frankly, I'm glad I didn't pay full price for this one. This version has a rather weak cast in general, but that does add to the fun arguing about it. On the plus side, it has Philip Quast ( THE BEST Javert, but he's even better on the TAC), Michael Ball (THE BEST Marius, also on the OLC and TAC versions), and Andy Warlow (a stirring Enjorlas for sure, but not THAT much better than Michael Maguire on the OBC and TAC). The scenes at the barricade are the best part of the CD. Kaho Shimada is an uneven Eponine, OK sometimes, less so at others. Debbie Byrne (Fantine) is OK, but I don't find her as moving as Patty LuPone (OLC) or Ruthie Henshaw (TAC). Tracy Shayne (Cosette) is irratating, not nearly as sweet as Judy Kuhn (OLB and TAC) or even Rebecca Caine (OLC). I find Barry James and especially Gay Soper (M. and Mme. Thenardier) grating as well.
I really miss Colm Wilkinson (OLC, OBC and TAC). OK, he has a unique singing style, but such heart. Not always perfect, but so powerful and emotional. All his solos and "Confrontation" just stop me dead in my tracks. The sweetness and purity of his "Bring Him Home" and "Epilogue" move me to tears. But really, there must be someone else who can do at least an adequate job or the show wouldn't have run so long in so many venues. I am willing to listen to another interpretation, but not this one. This is the central role in the play, it really can't survive without a good performance here. Gary Morris is horrible as Jean Valjean, cringe-provoking at times, merely weak at others. He's totally overmatched by Quast in "Confrontation" and by everyone in "One Day More" and "Epilogue". I haven't tried the recommendation of one reviewer of listening while squinting and shaking my head hard, but I don't see how that will help. Morris's "What have I done?", "Bring Him Home" and "Valjean's Confession" make me cover my ears or send me running for the fast forward button, although "Who am I?" isn't so bad. (I just tried the head shaking trick, it didn't help.)
magnificent!.......2005-06-15
Ok, I admit it. I have long been a fan of musicals, but I was only exposed to Les Mis a few months ago. My roommate loaned me this recording, and I fell in love. I played nothing but this soundtrack for the next several weeks.
As this is the only recording I've heard fully, I cannot give any comparisons between the performers here and those on other versions, but I do wish to give my general impression of the cast.
*Gary Morris (Valjean) - he has a strong, clear voice with which it is hard to find fault. He sings with emotion and passion, and I cannot imagine ever tiring of hearing him as Jean Valjean. If I had to give a complaint, it would be that I could imagine a voice with a little more distinct character...something a little riskier for the part of someone so complex.
*Philip Quast (Javert) - wow, I love deep voices, and his is so rich! I love when he hits the low note near the beginning of "Confrontation" ...I've seriously replayed that part over and over again just because it sends shivers through me...haha, I think you get the idea. This guy is good.
*Debbie Byrne (Fantine) - her voice took some getting used to because at first it seemed to me a little uncontrolled, almost like she could capture the fullness of the sound but not quite hit the notes. However, the more I listen to her, the more I enjoy her. Her voice has a wonderful texture, something you totally miss when listening to the super-clear, trilling sopranos that seem to be found all over most other musicals.
*Kaho Shimada (Eponine) - her voice took a little getting used to as well. I was a little confused until I realized she was Japanese, for though I wouldn't say you hear an accent, her voice does have a very different quality to it. Still, I enjoyed her performance very much. Her voice is trembling with emotion the entire time, almost like she can hardly control it...it is quite moving.
*Tracy Shayne (Cosette) - wow. I'm sorry, is Cosette supposed to be this shrill? Turn it off! While I'm impressed at some of the notes she hits, I don't think it's supposed to make you want to cover your ears.
*Michael Ball (Marius) -Ball makes Marius, a rather annoying character if you ask me, into someone actually likable, if not lovable. He's passionate and romantic, but not vapid. Probably my favorite vocal performance.
*Gay Soper and Barry James (the Thernardiers) - their voices are rather grating, but that's the point, right? Very entertaining performances...particularly in "Master of the House" (which, it's true, somehow manages to be stuck in your head all day).
*Anthony Warlow (Enjorolas) - very appropriate voice...manly and vibrant. If he doesn't make you want to go out and fight, then there's no help for you!
Overall, the performances were wonderful. I highly recommend this CD. A great recording of a great musical!
Mixed Feelings.......2005-04-20
I bought this recently, and it was an object lesson in why I ought to research an item before purchasing it.
For me, it's truly a toss-up as to whether this is a recording worth purchasing. The main benefit-a far from insignificant one-is that it is a complete recording full of much more materiel than can be found on the London or Broadway cast recordings. Basically, I was far from satisfied. The liner notes are error ridden, and the casting was not as good as possible. Gary Morris struck me as too young for the part, and Gay Soper (Mme. Thenardier) has a voice akin to the sound of fingernails on a chalkboard. But, in the absence of a complete Broadway recording, this still may be the best version available to buy. Be sure, however, to supplement it with another version. (The Tenth Anniversary recording might be the best.)
