words cant even describe how godly this cd is. buy it and see for yourself

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding album!.......2006-11-11

These guys are absolutely unbeleivable. Their music is high quality european classically-infused operatic metal. All their albums are awesome but I particularly love this one. Epic songwriting throughout with a great balance of power metal, power ballads and power opera. This album has stunning vocal melodies sung with passion and emotion. Great guitar sounds and brilliant guitar solos. Magical keyboards and outstanding speed solos. Tight and fast rythm section. This is really a perfect album in this genre of music and highly recommended to fans of Kamelot and Symphony X.

5 out of 5 stars More Great Sonata Arctica.......2006-09-08

This band brings depth, quality, and skill to the table for our enjoyment. They can go fast, like Dragonforce, but they also know how to make a ballad. I prefer their harder stuff though, but don't have to skip tracks because it is all very good. Sometimes you can hear Tony Kakko's Finnish accent, but it does not detract from the music in my opinion. I have Reckoning Night and Ecliptica (in addition to Winterheart's Guild) and they are also worth getting. If you like Sonata Arctica's style, make sure you pick up all 3 titles that I mentioned. They are very satisfying.

5 out of 5 stars the other reviews(except dumbass who gave it a 1 are right).......2005-10-20

i'm not going to write a long review, just simply enforce the idea that this is a great record. the first time i heard it, i was blown away. it has a very unique sound and very addictive. if you've never listened to power metal before and are looking for soemthing extremlly creative try this.

5 out of 5 stars Grand, dramatic, genius, masterful.......2005-08-27

In this review, when I write "metal," I mean melodic metal, not deathcore/thrash (e.g. Slayer) or whatever name it goes by these days (I like that stuff, too).

All metal bands inherit their sound largely from classical music, but European metal bands display different classical influences than American bands. American metal bands, for example the mighty Metallica, are the descendants equally of symphonic classics and American blues; Beethoven and Chuck Berry.

European metal is all classical, and it takes as much inspiration from opera as from instrumental symphonies. To me, this Sonata Arctica album is the opera that Mozart might have made if he had electric guitars and double bass drums available.

The first song is as entertaining a metal song as I have ever heard. Tony K. has as great a command of melody as any writer working in any genre.

Track 8 actually treads ground melodically that I have not encountered before. The mix of sounds is compelling, and I keep returning to it.

5 out of 5 stars Metallic Pop??.......2003-06-12

Forget power metal or any of those other misnomers! To me this is pure power pop, or metal pop, or heavy poppy metal, or whatever else is synonymous with catchy, melodic music with keyboard solos intertwining with furious guitar runs. The threesome of "Victoria's Secret", "Champagne Bath", and "Broken" is formidable, with each track blending seamlessly into the next, almost a medley of enticing, energizing songs. These songs stick to your brain like bubble gum on the bottom of a cleated Hells Angel's boot. I would have liked to see another epic like "The Power of One", and yes, this CD is a bit short, but for medlodic and extremely well-crafted power pop Sonata Arctica hits a high point here. Perhaps what separates this from other progressive bands is that the prog bands get more complex with each release, while SA stays relatively the same, not needing to cram instrumental interludes and extended solos into each song. They selectively add keyboard and guitar pyrotechnics to the songs that instinctively require them. The ballads stay relatively simplistic, as ballads should, I suppose. I do believe the production is better on this album, with more bass in the mix, and the vocalist's voice has matured, never seeming obnoxious even when he sings aggressively or attempts to snarl. As a whole this CD is charming and anthemic, but I could have used a bit more interplay and an epic encore to showcase Sonata's estimable talents. Oh well, maybe next time.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but..........2003-04-25

Let me start by saying that this is a pretty good CD, and if you're a fan it's going to be worth the money. Favorite songs: Abandoned, Pleased..., The Cage, and Victoria's Secret.

So, why does the album only get 3 stars? Because it just doesn't draw you in like Ecliptica and Silenece. For my money, there's just nothing on Winterheart's Guild that compares to Power of One, San Sebastian, or Mary Lou. It feels like they went into the studio looking to get another album out, and that's what they did.

Not to say it isn't good; it's just not up there with their first two discs.

5 out of 5 stars Heart Warming.......2003-04-22

I was Expecting alot from Sonata's upcoming record, was it going to be as good as Silence their previous effort? The answer to this questions is not so easy to answer so let me break it down for you.

The collection of songs found on Winterheart's Guild are very melodic and fast. Yes the album flows much faster than silence due to lots of fast paced songs. The songs contain less Guitar solos than Silence which had plenty. The keyboard playing is very good, lots of amazing solos and atmospheres very well created. They even had Stratovarius's Jenns Johanson play a couple solos for them. Tony Kakko's voice got way better, he almost lost his accent, and still has it's charm. The only thing that's really missing is one or two power ballads or mid-tempo songs such as GravenImage, The Misery or Broken, because most of the fast songs tend to sound alike. So i'd say anyone who likes wicked fast songs that are very well done, will be very happy with this release, and those like me who like mid-tempo songs will feel they should have balanced it a little more but in the end both will love this record, it's very much heart warming.

Is it better than silence? I'd say it comes close, but due to the lack of mid-tempo songs(1 or 2), Silence gets the upper hand.
But i'm sure some of you out there will prefer Winterheart's Guild to Silence because it contains more fast paced songs. It's all a matter of taste.

RATING: 4.5/5

HIGHLIGHTS : Graven Image, The Misery, Silver Tongue, Victoria's Secret, Broken, Draw Me.

5 out of 5 stars METAL ALBUM OF THE YEAR 2003 !.......2003-03-21

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST NEW RELEASE OUT TODAY.......2003-06-10

Come on guys, this CD is no where near the caliber of their previous releases, It is in a class by itself, this is their best. I dont see how they will ever be able to top this. They have once again proven the are on the same level as Finland's major metal acts, and are getting ready to surpass them. I had a chance to see them a few years back when they were just starting and were on tour with Stratovarious and Rhapsody. I knew they were on their way up and this CD just goes to prove to me i wasn't wrong. Their combination of keyboards and guitars together in melodic synchronazation is awesome those tow guys compliment each other and the vocals well what can you say it is FABULOUS. BUY THIS TODAY NO MATTER WHAT THE PRICE. Also check out DRAGONFORCE, and HIGHLORD that is if your mind can take it.

5 out of 5 stars Great!!!!.......2003-06-08

This is the third opus of Sonata Arctica. I was expecting a lot from this album and I was satisfy. All the songs are really cool, like all their songs from the 2 previews albums. I highly
recommend you this album if you loved Sonata Arctica before. This is simply a great album!

3 out of 5 stars Perhaps a bit rushed?.......2003-05-25

First off, let me say that I REALLY liked SA's first two releases ("Ecliptica" and "Silence") and highly recommend them to fans of good music and powerful metal.

Now, to Winterheart's Guild. I was highly anticipating this album based on the growth and excellent songwriting skills of the first two albums. Which leads me to why I only give this album 3 stars...technically, SA are very sound and professional. Every guitar and keyboard lead is excellent. But simply put, the songs lack the energy and catchiness of previous albums. Tony Kakko, SA's ultra-talented frontman, writes all of the songs on this one. Even though he is amazingly talented, perhaps that is a problem. Maybe he could have used some help from the other bandmembers. Given the 18 month span between this album and their last album, maybe the songs were a bit rushed? In my opinion, these songs sounds like "Silence" leftovers.

I still think SA are one of the great 4 or 5 young bands of today. I like their style and they are very excellent musicians. There are no major problems, they just need some time to develop the classics they are capable of. Maybe album #4 won't be so rushed.
