5 out of 5 stars Nazareth Get A New Producer And Continue Their Hot Streak.......2006-01-05

Nazareth hired Jeff "Skunk" Baxter to produce MALICE IN WONDERLAND, and the results are great. The opener, "Holiday", describes the feeling of ennui that arises from self-indulgence, and, along with the cautionary ballad "Fallen Angel", has motivated me to look at pictures of pretty actresses as a deterrent to such behavior. That's hardly the only great song here, as Baxter apparently encouraged the band to try new sounds, including cleaner guitar textures and exotic rhythms. This CD shows a band continuing to grow and refine their sound, and is an essential purchase for any Nazareth fan, as well as any fan of 70s and 80s rock in general.

5 out of 5 stars Another ROCK SOLID effort by Dan and the Boys.......2005-03-02

Another GREAT album that was rather ignored by devotees and critics! Many 'fans' had deserted them when 'Fool Circle', two albums previous, hit the streets. The change in musical direction 'had put them off' since they saw the band as merely a hard-rockin' 'eavy 'me'al oufit!!! As mentioned in the ballads review, Nazareth has always had eclectic leanings as far back as their first album on Warner Brothers in 1972! Any one REALLY surprised, Im not! Thats why Ive always appreciated pretty much what they have done - because of the diverse writing styles. (Dan McCafferty's 1975 solo disc is a good representation of what Im talking about) Well here it is 1980's 'Malice In Wonderland' - another solid package of good singing and good playing from the boys! The added live tracks of the studio versions are a welcome addition, as they get a 'rather different' treatment when performed live. Once again guitarist MANNY CHARLTON comes up with a musically poignant and sensitive piece, 'Ship of Dreams.' (Any one remember 'A Rose In the Heather' from 'Hair of the Dog' - same inspiration) Of couse, the great axe wielder, ZAL CLEMINSON formerly of the SENSATIONAL ALEX HARVEY BAND who joined the lineup on 1979's 'No Mean City, provides two SOLID compositions, a mid tempo rocker, 'Big Boy'(originally done on the 1976 SAHB w/o Alex record, 'Fourplay') and the rather moving ballad, 'Hearts Grown Cold' (which Rick Medlocke and Blackfoot did a few years later when ex-Uriah Heeper KEN HENSLEY was in the band) For those who dont know, ex-DOOBIE BROTHER, Jeff Baxter produced this record (just as he did with 'Fool Circle) and I might add, DID a commendable job as the '3rd ear man!'
Some of ya'll heard Nazareth 'sold out' with the chick singers on 'Big Boy' along with its mid-section sax solo and least I forget, were AGHASTLY MORTIFIED when VIBES made their first appearance on the mid-tempo groove of 'Fast Cars!' Oh no - what have these SCOTTISH rockers done to themselves? Once again, to prepare and deliver another eclectic, NO NOT ECCENTRIC, platter of good taste that was hardly a waste! A nice companion to some of their earlier discs and some later ones too - '2xs' 'Bugaloo' and 'No Jive' If your looking for total BLITZKRIEG, better go with Fates Warning Queensryche Megadeth Tool Pavement or Soulfly - if the tastes buds are little mo' into a diverse and discriminating frame of mind, well, you've come to the right place! 'MIW' is the package of song for you. (BTW, the band with new guy Jimmy Murrison on guitar and bassist Pete Agnew's son on drums are on a 6 month world tour that should commence around the time of the original singer's and bassist 59th birthday! Cheers to all!

I've been trying to find this CD for a year or so now and was pleased to finally receive it, and let my brother have a copy. Both of us thought the live bonus tracks at the end were pretty excellent but the others fairly mediocre. We're now getting a copy of the Paice Ashton Lord Live at the BBC CD and hopefully it will be better value.

4 out of 5 stars Lord, paice, Ashton and Marshden.......2002-11-04

the idea of this unique album came from Jon Lord, Tony Ashton (RIP) & Ian Paice after Deep purple final split forever in 1976. The most tracks are very unique and strange, they didn't play any hard Rock n roll anymore in this album, what they ever did within deep purple for 8 years before. but the tracks are excellent check it out like ghost story Ashton 's vocal is very deep grave and bluesy. Jon Lord did always some excellent melodic with his keyboard, Ian Paice did several great drumming tracks and Tony Ashton did a good job! cheers Jonas

5 out of 5 stars Good Blues Rock A+ Percussion/Keys.......2002-08-05

Pretty cool Blues/Rock with Funk mixed in. All songs rock while maintaining a blues/cool/funky melody to them. Similar to the bluesy rock/funk of Deep Purple's "Come Taste the band" this late 70's release makes me laugh at what was popular at the time. It's also an example of why these guys still make rock music today.

    5 out of 5 stars A Unique Album.......2000-06-24

I first listened to this album when it first was published in 1976, I liked it then and I still like it. It's one of those classics that never gets old, a unique album that you feel like listening to every now and then without interruption.

    1 out of 5 stars Boooorrring.......2000-03-24

I certainly wasnt thrilled with album. This is a departure from the hard rock edge Deep Purple fans would appreciate. Lords talent isnt really apparent here...Ashtons vocals are flat (perhaps in good interesting-type-of-way)..Paice's percussion isnt really much to remember.

Im listening to it now. Its dull. 70s rock diehards might enjoy it to kill time...or Deep Purple collectors might simply need to have it.

Simply dull BritRock album from 1977, by some uninspired monsters of rock...reminds me of other mediocre releases by BBA (Jeff Beck, Tim Bogert, Carmine Appice) or BLT (Jack Bruce, ,L? ,Robin Trower). All these musicians had much better studio releases outside these 'powertrios'. When comparing BLT/Truce, BBA (Beck, Bogert, Appice) and PAL (Malice in Wonderland)...BLT is the most dissapointing, with PAL earning one star because it is so dull, and BBAs self titled being not all that bad with some good playing.

I suggest listen before you buy.

3 out of 5 stars Nazareth - 'Malice In Wonderland' (Castle).......2006-12-18

Originally released in 1980, as I remember the very day this record hit the stores. A decent later-day Nazareth effort. Tunes I liked best were the radio friendly "Holiday", "Talking To One Of The Boys","Talking About Love" and the four added bonus tracks, "Razamanaz", "Hair Of The Dog" plus two more, apparently taked from a live EP. Basically, just fairly good '70's album hard rock to be fully experienced here. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars New Horizons for a Great Band..........2006-11-17

It would appear Nazareth got too close to painting themselves into a corner with Expect No Mercy and No Mean City. They're both good albums but nothing unexpected at that point in their career. Turning themselves over to Jeff Baxter for a new lease on life turned out to be a smart move, and the results are both unexpected and brilliant. Malice in Wonderland thoroughly explores Nazareth's potential and finally brings some long needed production values to a band that was very good, but becoming formulaic and stale. Backing off from their typical commanding lead vocal punctuated by heavy guitars and a bruising rhythm section approach, they went for lush melodies, jangly guitars, layered harmonies, and exotic rhythms (for them) that make for an absorbing and satisfying album that can hold an open minded listener's attention from start to finish.
When it was first released some fans were undoubtedly confused at best or felt betrayed at worst. For others, it was a somewhat shocking revelation that these guys could actually bust out of the mold to produce what is possibly the finest offering of their prolific career. If you're willing to set aside what you expect from Nazareth based on previous albums, Malice in Wonderland is a terrific piece of work that kept them from being permanently saddled as a one-trick pony and displayed their collective talent in a way they never quite equaled again. Given its unique qualities, if you're just getting acquainted with Nazareth, one of their earlier albums or a compilation might be a better place to start. That will put this album in perspective and allow you to appreciate its depth.

      1 out of 5 stars Absolutely terrible.......2004-12-30

If you like Nazareth, DO NOT buy this cd. It sounds nothing like any album they had done previously. Only if you gathered the ten worst songs from all their previous albums combined could you even hope to approximate the consistently pathetic level that they achieved for this release. It's 100% weak ballads and annoying pop songs, and there is not a single good rock song or standout track to justify it even for completists. I had always remembered this as a disappointing album, but thinking that age and maturity might have altered my opinion I bought it on cd, only to end up flinging it off my deck and into the woods in utter disgust after the first listen. Nazareth is one of the classic bands of all time, but this is an amazingly bad album. How they could have followed No Mean City with this has always bewildered me.

2 out of 5 stars Trust me - over rated!.......2003-02-26

To say that Nazareth sold out on this one may be wrong, but what's true is that their musical direction got changed as a new decade began. Personally I don't think "Malice in wonderland" is that great. Of course you get some good music, especially in the opener "Holiday". The ballad "Heart's grown cold" is also one of the albums better tracks, but over all this effort can not compete with earlier albums like "Loud `n' proud", "Hair of the dog" or "Expect no mercy". This is not the best starting point to explore Nazareth.

      5 out of 5 stars Clear favorite.......2002-04-11

A great album to get acqainted with this 70s rock group. I was thrilled to find out this album was remastered as it is a personal favorite. Ditto to the first reviewers comments. This is a must have album for any fan of this music era.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Medieval Metal.......2004-06-01

Raventhrone is a side project of Ray Wells. He formed the band Pazazu. Now why Raventhrone is a side project and Pazazu is the main band I have no idea. They both play similar music, that is, medieval style Black Metal, with some choirwork and a symphonic ensemble, with both clean and gruff vocals. The difference is ostensibly Raventhrone's use of modern instruments like electric guitar and synthesizer, while Pazazu tries to use instruments of the middle ages. There are other groups that do this too, like Cruachen, In Extremo, Saltatio Mortis and N'SYNC, sorry, I couldn't resist.

Raventhrone is about as close as I get to Death Metal, at least extreme Death Metal. I hear extreme Death metal can darken your eyes, turn your fingernails and tongue black and make holes mysteriously appear in your nose, lip, ears and nip..., I better not go there. A death metal purist would probably scoff at the notion that Raventhrone is Death Metal or even Black Metal. Actually it's a lot like Viking Metal but with Medieval basis instead of Viking folklore. It's melodic and some songs songs sound fairly accessable.

        Conclusion:

I highly recommend Malice in Wonderland for fans of Viking Metal bands, like Moonsorrow or Fintroll or fans of Eternal Tears of Sorrow and Silentium or any of the B&B bands like Tristania, After Forever etc. Malice in Wonderland, a form of Medieval Black Metal, is right up your alley.

5 out of 5 stars Ray Wells of Pazuzu side project?.......1999-05-25

Raventhrone sounds like a mixture of Black Metal harshness with Pazuzu like ambient medieval introludes and melodies. Raventhrone has a very triumphant atmosphere, as though you are preparing for battle! A great combonation of typical "trollish" vocals, but the high lights are when Ray sings in "clear" Viking-like chants! Absolutely brilliant! This is a MUST have for fans of Ray Wells work on the ALL MIGHTY Dark ambient PAZUZU. Basic difference is that Raventhrone has more Black Metal tunes! Lovely Mixture when you combine the two if you ask me!

This band and this Malice record is a great find. I hope Four19 gets to be a huge band because their music rocks and has great grooves. I hate bands that make records that all sound like the same song all the way through, and this band knows how to avoid that trap while still sounding connected from one track to the next. My favorites are definitely "Star" and "Cherry Pie." B-Boy's great too...this and "Batter Up" will be my favorites in the morning when I'm rocking out on my long drive. Looking forward to more Four19, music's tight, lead singer's amazing, I know they have to be good live from what I'm hearing here. Definite buy especially you like bands that rock and groove like Incubus, No Doubt, I dig some hip hop like BEP, heavier rock like SOAD, whatever's good.
