Eh, solid........2006-07-09

The problem is that all these new metal bands sound the same nowadays. I can't distinguish one band from another. Soilwork, however, at least does it well. I approve.

Departure from greatness..... repeating the NBC formula .......2006-06-21

Following the underground success of Natural Born Chaos (2002), the fans of Soilwork had every reason to expect something of equal or greater production. Put simply, how could this band top their previous effort? "Soilworker's" all over the world were toasting impossible standards, forever indulging in the 42 minutes of bliss NBC afforded them, only to be informed a new album "Figure Number Five" was in the works, with a release in 2003.

So what do we have? A watered down version of Natural Born Chaos? Not entirely. "Figure Number Five" does have its own sound world and its greatest progression comes from Keyboardist Sven Karlsson writing 5 of the songs. In all actuality, Sven's output may have kick-started the FNF sessions with only 1 writing credit on NBC. Karlsson's presence is felt in Soilwork's least aggressive song to date "Departure Plan" and also Soilwork's worst song to date "Brickwalker", you could almost skip this song.

The most noticeable flaw of "Figure Number Five" is that it has borrowed the same formula from NBC With LITTLE variation. Some songs could be mistaken for NBC b-sides - "Light the Torch" "The Mindmaker" and "Downfall 24", clearly the weak links in the chain. The album clocks in at 40:50, which makes you wonder...was there enough good ideas to make another album? Probably not, and make no mistake about it, this is Soilwork's worst effort, but also contains some of its greatest work.

What makes this album worthy and memorable is I was out of town and listened to it for the first time on the 21st floor of some hotel. Sitting on an extended window ledge I sat there overlooking the city. The mood was right and its probably why it worked so well for me.

1, 2, 3 . . . cook! With a chorus........2006-05-07

They do this mixed metal/pop thing pretty good, you could even imagine some strings on the chorus in "Cranking the Sirens". But good grief, this formula is so overworked at this point it's hard to take it seriously anymore. The only reason I bothered to review this is that they have a talent for writing hooks in the choruses, and that shouldn't be thrown away. If these guys dropped the speed metal riff/croaking rap vocal parts, they might actually have something that would be worth recording. I realize that would completely change who they are, but when you're tromping over the same ground time and time again, maybe change isn't such a bad thing.

Disappointing (2.5 stars).......2006-04-06

In general, this is not a terrible album. But when you put this one up against everything else Soilwork has done, it's really not impressive. I loved the abrasiveness of Soilwork's classic A PREDATOR'S PORTRAIT, but that really doesn't show here.

FNF is composed mostly of formulaic song structure and tries a little too hard. If I didn't know Soilwork better, I'd mistake this album for an attempt at the mainstream. Don't get me wrong, there are a few saving graces. Rejection Role is a great, intense song and one of my favorites. Other than that, there are a few impressive guitar solos interspersed throughout FNF (check out The Mindmaker, Brickwalker).

Like I said, not a terrible album; I own it. But unless you're hell-bent on owning every last Soilwork album, I'd opt for APP, NATURAL BORN CHAOS, or STABBING THE DRAMA.

A Must For A Soilwork Fan.......2004-02-14

I've been a fan of Soilwork for awhile now, and this was the cd that introduced me to the guys. Actually, the cd I got was at an FYE and it didn't say anything about being an import on the case. It was cheaper, too. But, I had been hearing Overload and Rejection Role for awhile, so I got it. I'm glad I did, because it made me crazy for these guy's music.

Now, for all you die-hard, since-the-beginning fans, I must warn you that this cd is nowhere near A Predator's Portrait or The Chainheart Machine in power or speed. But it still has a very distinct sound that is very original and works well here. This may be a turn-off for those of the hardcore Soilwork worshiping kind, but it's worth a try. For those of you who are just searching around and looking to Soilwork, this is a good place to start. If you like the cd, try Natural Born Chaos, then A Predator's Portrait and so on. Getting back to the cd review, it has it's heavy moments along with some softer and more peaceful ones as well. The songs are nicely put together and isn't a repetative song on the album. But, once again, all of you fans will find them not nearly as powerful as before. The songs which stand out are Rejection Role, Figure Number Five, Cranking The Sirens, and Distortion Sleep. My personal favorites are Overload, The Strangler, and Cranking The Sirens. The only music video (not included) is for Rejection Role, and if you are a fan of the new Headbanger's Ball, you should have seen it as well as a similar In Flames video.

The second disk sounds very similar to a demo tape and doesn't have much of the keyboard. But, it is still six extra songs that are great for any Soilwork fan out there. The stand out track is Steel Bath Suicide, which is the title track of another Soilwork cd. If you are thinking about getting either the regular cd or this combo, I'd have to recommend this set. It's a good buy for fans and lets the new-comers listen to some of the band's older stuff. Although I'm now a huge fan of A Predator's Portrait, I can't forget my old favorites. This cd has an original sound and has some unforgetable songs, and with the inclusion of six bonus songs, there is very little out there that is better. I highly recommend it.

Not the best from Soilwork...Repeated recipe..........2005-04-08

Considering what Soilwork has done in the past, I found this album very disappointing. Knowing the talent the band has, you won't find here the versatility and the level of compositions of past releases.
Soilwork seemed to ran out of ideas for this one, creating a monotonous album with a more accesible approach and sound. The choruses, the prechoruses, and the verses sound alike, like if they were made out from the same mold, creating the monotony mentioned before. You'll find the same vibe all along the album. The intrincate sampler rhythms and backgrounds and catchy and melodic choruses are a constant. It looks like if the band worked really hard in creating hooky and catchy choruses than cool, well-developed and creative verses and rhtythms. They abuse of the samplers, that are present all along the record. They've used them since the beginning, but now they've become the main character in every song. Just listening to the first three songs of the album will be enough to give you an idea.
The album is too prolix, too perfectly arranged and simply, easily and fastly written. It needs more brutality, heaviness, speed, to name a few. But most important of all, fresh new ideas. Summing up, it lacks of all the good things that previous albums had. And it's a shame the band pleased with such a weak album, after releasing masterpieces like "A predator's Portrait" and "Steel Bath Suicide". Because we know what they're capable of, and they simply don't prove it in "Figure Number Five". And I wouldn't consider Soilwork, at least in this record, as death melodic metal anymore. My label would be "heavy melodic" instead.
But the album has some good moments though, like sparks of their brilliance and talent, like the chorus and prechorus in "Downfall 24", with a nice solo and sort of a proggressive arrangements, or the "Figure Number Five", the third song, in which the band dared to speed up a little bit. Most of the rest are intrascendant.

The bonus track "Bursting out" is probably the best song in the album, but doesn't really changed much my opinion.

Do I need to say that this is their weakest album to date?
Anyway, I'd strongly recommend you to pass this "Figure Number Five" and go for "A Predator's Portrait", "Steel Bath Suicide", or "The Chainheart Machine" if you want something faster.

PS: if you want to get a little through the disappointment, get the version with the bonus CD, with some covers and interesting stuff, which I consider suitable for fans.
