Lovely music!.......2001-12-18

These CDs are for lovers of Irish music and of the "old-timey" sound of John McCormack. The songs themselves are lovely, and James Flannery sings them exactly as they need to be sung... in a simple and straightforward manner. The music is evocative of the sound and spirit of a long-ago time. The accompanying book gives interesting background information about Thomas Moore and also about the songs. Good listening for a rainy day or a snowy night with the fire blazing.

Black metals skeleton in the closet.......2007-01-14

If more people would have heard of this, there wouldnt be so many Cradle or Dimmu haters. This was the first attempt of a black metal band for selling out. Granted, the leader, Tom Warrior had no part in this album, so at least he cant be blamed.

But in all honesty, avoid this turd. Hair metal blows, especially from that of a black metal band. Worst than Judas Priests "Turbo" by about 300%.

Not so bad after all..........2006-11-12

... but not so great. Cold Lake was a sort of side project for the band who desired to play a much less darker music, in a word who wanted to party, to have fun and forget the bad times. Realizing that it would be suicidal to produce it under the bandname of CF, they tried to sell it under another denomination. Unfortunately, this was refused (and i agree with Tom G. Fischer that it was a huge mistake). The rest is history.

Cold Lake found some success in certain places of america where glam-rock was popular. However, it was highly rejected in europe where the band had previously gained some fame with a speed-thrash metal oriented style...

Musically? You can expect a mix of heavy-rock and a remaining of thrash-metal influence... Some songs could easily be considered as CF good tunes... To me, "Downtown Hanoi", "(Once) They Were Eagles", "Juices Like Wine" and "Roses Without Thorns" are songs CF could be proud of. Others just don't fit with the old CF style... But they are interesting too ("Blood on Kisses", "Cherry Orchards", "Seduce me Tonight" and "Petty Obsessions"). Listening the still harsh and aggressive voice of its singer combined with a more melodic and mainstream music is not so depleasant... Sometimes ("seduce me tonight"), it is really funny.

To conclude, Cold Lake is the album CF will never be re-released or remastered again because Tom G. Fischer doesn't want it to be (he only desire to forget it!)... This is why it is a so hard to get production and thus, so expensive!

Hell yea, I like this album ! Always did...
But then, I 'preciate all the efforts thru' time of this amazing, inventive & unusual band.
Okay, their looks in this period are not really hot (in *my* opinion anyway) *but* lotsa respect for trying new & different things !
No, this release isn't glam/poser, I even find darkness in songs like 'Cherry Orchards' (love the songtitle btw.)... The earlier mentioned comparison to Judas Priest is quite accurate, actually...

What can I say about this album but they eithier sold out or thought this was a good change. What ever they were thinking it failed. They went from the Darkness to the Light! Not even good light bad lighting. Not to mention they trying to look like Slaughter or Posion. What the hell is that about. I do not understand when you had greatness like To Megatherion or Morbid Tales then a Frozen Terd. I give it this much it made me laugh like Hell. Song titles like juices like wine and Cherry Orchards where to funny. It was pretty bad when they tried combine some old style with this POP. I would pass on this one and just go back to what they do best and thats being Celtic Frost of old , You know Procreation of the Wicked and not Cold Lake! We can only hope. Do yourself a favor and don't listen to these other fools who rave about this one. And buy the old stuff!

Like the other review states, this is not as bad as many fans claim. I've been a Frost fan since "Morbid Tales", and although this is a strange change of looks for Frost, the music is what really counts correct???...

The sound on "Cold Lake" is raw as hell, and has a very similar feel to the earlier days. The groove is still there that's for sure. As for song content, and lyrics, they can become kind of cheesy at times. It's still a very interesting concept Frost was searching for with this new direction. I give them credit for attempting something as risky as this was at the time....

I'm actually very happy I bought this and listened to it for myself. If it had been for many of the reviews I've read, I wouldn't have purchaced this. I'm glad I went with my gut instinct. "Cold Lake" is a solid, fun, original Frost release.

To Steve Kuehler : Stick to your Marvel Action Character toys. You have no taste in music at all...

One of the most unique albums ever...........2005-04-16

This album supposedly ruined CF's reputation and career, and was considered an "embarrassment" by the band itself. Although the album isn't as raw and aggressive as the band's previous albums, it is more unique and "other-worldy". I have never heard songs that sound like these songs, or guitar solos that sound like the ones on Cold Lake! Im very familiar with hair bands--I can differentiate the bands from one another--even the more unknown ones, and let me tell you--this does NOT sound like a hair band! Their photos in the CD jacket are a little weird I must admit, and I can see why that would disappoint fans, but the music is whats important, and it is superior to anything that a hair band could produce. One song's beginning (Downtown Hanoi) can pass as a Motley Crue riff, but once you hear Warrior's voice you know it sure as hell can't be!
My favorite song is "roses without thorns"-the solos and riffs put me in another world-and the feeling is amazing! The other songs disassociate you from this world--and that's something no hair band or no other CF album can do. Cold Lake is truly an amazing album, the music is undescribable in terms of how its put together-probably because its so original. I definetely recommend it. If you are a big CF fan, you might be a little pissed that this is the same band that had all of those raw, intense songs on their other CD's, and I definetly agree Cold Lake doesnt define what the band it truly like, but the music is sensational and that's all that matters. CF was always a band that stood apart from the rest of the metal bands and didn't really fit into a genre, originality is their name, and if that's important to you, this CD wont disappoint you!
You cant find the cd anywhere, I was lucky to buy one from ebay-so you can occasioanly check if they have it there!

Underrated and Misunderstood!!!!!!!!!!.......2004-06-05

Yes, it isn't the extreme, raw, primitive thrash or the unique, avant-garde material they do so well, yet, it does still contain a few of their trademark experiments (the short rap track,"Human"), just not as epic in scope. Yes, Tom G. Warrior's vocals aren't the deep, aggressive vocals we've grown to know and love, only to be replaced by a more sleazy delivery (yet, he still doesn't really "sing" per se) and yes, the band are "glammed up" in the photos, and yes, there are songs called "Tease Me", "Seduce me Tonight" and "Dance Sleazy", but is it REALLY glam metal? I think not.
It's heavy, it's metal, not much glam AT ALL. Listen to "(Once )They Were Eagles", "Cherry Orchards","Downtown Hanoi"(my favorite song on the album) and yes, "Tease Me" (the fastest song here) and you will see that it's not very glammy musically. To tell you the truth, I was reminded more of Iron Maiden or Judas Priest, not Poison, Warrant or Ratt. It's metal, people, it might not be very thrashy, but it's still heavy, and it's still good.

Criminally overlooked, much better than its reputation.......2004-02-14

This album was quite a shock for hardcore Celtic Frost fans. It has a little bit of a glam sound, but it's still pretty heavy in spots. "Downtown Hanoi" is one of my favorites, and was redone heavier on "Parched With Thirst",a great compilation album well worth searching out. I remember my favorite, the previous "Into the Pandomonium" getting a 0 rating in Metal Forces, my favorite metal magazine of the era. That album was very unusual, with the cover of "Mexican Radio" and the operatic nature. "Cold Lake" was a drastic departure, and metal fans aren't the most accepting of change in a band.Celtic Frost was a great band who got pigeonholed as Death Metal, but really was so much more. Their music remained interesting throughout their career."Cherry Orchards" has a great riff,just don't judge this by the classics such as "Morbid Tales". Still a worthwhile CD though. Glam thrash would be the best description for this album. Hopefully the new Celtic Frost will be killer!

Frost's most unusual album.......2003-09-17

Celtic Frost had established themselves as Europe's preeminent
extreme metal band with such classic releases as "Morbid Tales"
and "Into The Pandemonium", and so their fans were shocked
when the revamped band issued this in 1989.
Why? The music was suddenly light thrash with more than a slight
passing resemblance to forgettable sleaze metal acts. Even worse
were the cover photos of Warrior and crew sporting teased hair
and inane Poison-type garb. "Sellout" was the universal cry from
the metal underground while the pop-metal marketplace was far
from impressed. Celtic Frost never recovered from the fallout,
at least during their existence.
So, all these years later and with the benefit of hindsight, how
does "Cold Lake" sound? Not bad; in fact, pretty damned good.
Take away the ridiculous image makeover, forget Frost's prior
releases (and certainly erase all memories of their savage
beginning as Hellhammer) and what you have is a surprisingly
entertaining and energetic collection. Of the 12 songs,
the best tracks ('Blood On Kisses', '(Once) They Were Eagles',
'Cherry Orchards' and 'Downtown Hanoi') rank as some of the
finest above ground metal of the late '80's. Thats not saying
much, admittedly; there is no way around the fact that
some of the material is just as monumentally irrelevant as
the rest of what constituted such metal of the era. But if
the idea of a Motley Crue-type outfit with fine musicians and
a darker outlook sounds good to you, then this disc should
definitely be in your collection as you'll love it. For Celtic
Frost, they may have drowned in this "Cold Lake", but it's
still a good effort.
