Album Description
Following the Dead's early Warner Bros. LP's and their evolution from a San Francisco hippie phenomenon to one of the biggest bands on the planet, these five album masterpieces chronicle the creatively expansive portion of their long, strange, and amazing trip beginning in 1873 when they launchd their own label. Rhino's remastered & expanded editions celebrate the Dead's immortal music with state-of-the-art sonics and a wealth of fresh-from-the-archives bonus rarities.
Customer Reviews:
One of the Dead's uniquest contributions.......2007-05-07
I've always had great affection for this album. Their cover of "Good Lovin'" is absolutely irresistible. This album is likely to appear to non-Dead fans to, as it is funkier and tighter than most.
Nice collection of songs.......2007-03-17
Released in 1978, this was the Grateful Dead's tenth studio album and 14th overall. Oringally, it had 10 songs and was just under 39 minutes long. With the bonus tracks, it comes out to 74 minutes.
On the first CD release of this album, the sound quality was mediocre. All of these remastered Grateful Dead CD's have excellent sound. They are recorded in HDCD (24 bit instead of the standard 16) so they sound better than normal CD's. And if you have a CD player that has the HDCD decoder, they sound stunning.
All of the remastered Grateful Dead CD's have bonus material to bring the total playing time up to close to 80 minutes. The bonus material has been very good on some CD's (like Blues for Allah) to disappointing on others (American Beauty).
Except for Ollin Arageed, the bonus material on Shakedown Street is not very good. Ollin Arageed is the best thing on the CD, and one of the best and more unusual tracks by the Grateful Dead. The other tracks are a version Good Lovin' with Lowell George on vocals (which isn't as good as Bob Wier's inspired version), and then a bunch of live songs. The live material is nothing special, just rambling versions of some of the studio songs. Even the 13 minute Fire On the Mountain is nothing special. I have heard much better live versions of this song.
As for the original Shakedown Street was produced by Lowell George of Little Feat (about a year before he died). It kind of goes back to the days of American Beauty and Workingman's Dead (but with more of a seventies flavor). Rumor has it that the Dead were looking for a hit and conformed the music to the sounds of the time. Some say there is a bit of disco flavor in this. But, I don't agree.
Just like most Grateful Dead albums, there are some great songs on this CD (a rollicking version of the Little Rascal's Good Lovin', Shakedown Street, I Need a Miracle, Fire on the Mountain) with a bunch of mediocre songs. Even the great American Beauty album was not consistant throughout.
This is a three to four star CD. I tilt to 3 stars because the bonus material isn't very good.
The band's second worst album.......2006-12-03
This is an okay record. Basic the band wanted to record another album before their Egypt performances in 1978. So they went into the band's new studio and began recording before they even had enough new songs and unfortunatly, it shows. This album has a much more plays it straight feel than others. This might have had something to do with Terrapin Station's somewhat over the top production. Dispite all this, there's some nice stuff on here. The Good Lovin' that opens this album is quite good. France I've come to like okay although that's probably because it was never played live and thus is kind of a rarity. The best things about this Shakedown Street is the cool little Jerry string bending overdubs and the fact that it's one of the few times I've heard all the vocals onkey. Serengetti is fun but short. Fire On The Mountain turns out in a nice version. I Need A Miracle is a straight up rocker that's actually pretty basic for the Dead. Once again, one of the problems some of the band members had with Terrapin was that it didn't rock out enough. Donna's From The Heart Of Me has a cool hook. Both Stagger Lee and All New Minglewood Blues are no great shakes. From The Heart Of Me was a tune written to be romantic and it's okay. It was only played live three times. Of all the bonus stuff, the best is Ollin Arageed.
Fire On The Mountain.......2006-06-19
The Grateful Dead really put themselves out on this one.One thing that makes 'Shakedown Street' so great is the fact that the bands recent mix of blues and jazz with their traditional rock sound is now spiced up with a little creamy production slickness and a lot of funk. The title track is a perfect example-it's silly, catchy and deeply into an R&B/funk flavor.R&B is a big interest here because The Rascles "Good Lovin'" is given a bouncy Caribbean-soul type of feeling right along with a bit of a slower take with "Stagger Lee".Same goes for Mickey Hart's brilliant percussion on the sing a long "Fire On The Mountain"."France" is another matter entirely-a very fun and romantic vision set to music that so perfectly accompanies it-the best part is the ringing steel drums and fender rhodes piano.Ironically the two rockers "I Need A Miracle" and "All New Minglewood Blues" aren't the most impressive tunes here."From The Heart Of Me" is absolutely gorgeous and the closer? "If I Had The World To Give" has a songcraft to it that is almost to the level of an Elton John or The Beatles. So are the Grateful Dead trying to be less jamsters and more craftsmen here?Yes they sure are but Bob,Bill,Mickey and Jerry do it sooooo well here that it makes no difference.Yes long intricate jams are what made them but 'Shakedown Street' shows what great musicians they are and that even though these are short songs they never had to commercialize their music.Nothing here is very conventional-each song could spin off into some other crazy musical genre. And it's themes are relaxing and fun.So what more could a music lover want?
You've just gotta poke around. .......2006-03-28
Though this is not the dead best album(in my opinion Blues for Allah is) it is still an alright album. The highlights are Shakedown St., Fire on the Mountain, and Good Lovin' but the other song are good too. Im not really a fan of bonus tracks but the bonus tracks on this album are great like the Good Lovin with Lowell George on vocals and the live Ollin Arageed, Fire on the Mountain and Stagger Lee from the Grateful Deads legendary trip to Egypt. Buy this album and if you have got the money buy Blues for Allah also, you wont regret it.

Freddie Foxxx has been murdering other people's tracks for years with his "fake pimp free flow" (in the words of another hip-hop prophet, Jeru the Damaja). After paying all possible dues over the course of a decade in hip-hop (he's rolled with Eric B & Rakim, Gang Starr, and M.O.P.), he's finally releasing his own album, an incisive epic that will leave many running for cover. Never one to pull punches, the man also known as Bumpy Knuckles rips into the rap industry. His infamous pair of nines are in full effect from beginning to end of this relentless album, blasting every weak link in the rap game, especially on the title track. But there's method to his madness: this articulate, self-proclaimed "intelligent thug" wants to change the racist nature of the hip-hop industry, which he analyses on "MCs Come and MCs Go." Industry Shakedown boasts straight, brilliant lyrics from beginning to end, and invigorating hard-core production from the likes of DJ Premier, Pete Rock, and Foxxx himself. Remember when hip-hop was dangerous? When it challenged the status quo? Freddie Foxxx does. --Lizz Mendez Berry

Once Again...........2006-09-28
He debuted with the Classic Release Freddie Foxxx Is Here. Then dropped another hard to find LP titled Crazy Like A Foxxx. Now we have an even more polished MC on INDUSTRY SHAKEDOWN. Bumpy Knuckles is in full effect! Rhyming with a passion and hunger that is unmatched in present times. Do yourself a huge favor and support a great Hip Hop Artist in purchasing this record. For all the hedz, start diggin in the crates for the GEMS I listed above. They're pretty much artifacts now, but if you can get your hands on them they're priceless!!!
Freddie Foxxx is one of the illest of all time.......2005-08-07
I first heard Freddie Foxxx on KRS-ONE's "Sex and Violence" ('92) album on a track called "Ruff Ruff," one of the dopest hip-hop collab tracks of all time. "Industry Shakedown" is almost a flawless album. My only gripes are: the corny intro to "MCs Come and MCs Go" (an otherwise excellent track), and the wack choruses on "Bumpy Bring It Home" and especially "Bumpy Knuckles Baby" (very corny chorus, and sub-par for Foxxx); but the rest of the content is pure fire.
For anybody saying that there's not enough lyrical variety, you need to listen more closely. Yes, Freddie Foxxx is MILITANT, but he is not some cliche rapper talking kill-this/kill-that on every track. He merely asserts his sense of power and need for independence, epitomized by the track "Never Bow Down," a spoken word jewel. The title track is very dope even though it's basically about his personal record company beefs. Tracks like "Who Knows Why" and "Been Here Before" are philosophical in nature. The rest of the tracks are also great.
Overall I consider this a classic album. However, to be honest, it doesn't really do Bumpy justice. He has gotten SOOO much deeper with his lyrical content since dropping this album. Use your favorite file-sharer to grab the following singles: "Why Freestyle", "Long Eyes", and "SWAM". The first is political, the second is about pimping, and the last is just about being a dope MC. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.
Inside Your Head.......2005-02-28
After hearing him on frequent Gangstarr releases, we finally get an album of just Bumpy. As anybody familiar with his guest appearances should be able to guess, this album is INTENSE. Bumpy is constantly hyped up and angry. Production from DJ Premier and a guest appearance from M.O.P. only contribute to the hardcore feel of this record. The thing is, an entire album of bugged out, screaming Bumpy gets pretty repetitive and the few attempts at more downtempo stuff like "Searchin" really fail. Still, there's more than a handful of mix tape worthy tracks on here, which is why i gave it four stars. My personal favorites are "Tell Em I'm Here" "Inside Your Head" and "Part Of My Life," all of which have truly incredible battle rhymes from one of the cleverest rappers out there. Now if he could only learn to stretch his sound a little, he could release a true classic.
I'm glad I bought this album.......2003-02-28
The rapper of the "third verse" dropped this album in summer 2000 and not only does he let loose on wack emcees, but he also aims at such chart-toppers as N.O.R.E. and Memphis Bleek. He also attacks major-record labels on the title track produced by Pete Rock. Other highlights (and there are plenty) are "R.N.S." and "Part of My Life" (both produced by DJ Premier), the hysterical and playful "MC's Come, MC's Go" (no, you are NOT supposed to take that song seriously), "Bumpy Knuckles Baby" and the best track, "The Mastas" (produced by Foxxx himself, featuring M.O.P.). I couldn't give it five stars because I didn't care for "Searchin'" and also, all those songs about beating or shooting someone down start to wear thin after 70 minutes. But this album is still worth it for the song "Bumpy Bring it Home", where he says that his music "is like the new Jordans when they come out." I couldn't have said it better myself.
Straight-ahead hardcore raps.......2002-07-08
Freddie Foxxx has appeared on many discs by many other rappers, and generally steals the show. He's even better on his solo effort. Sometimes he's so hard it's funny--you can't take him all that seriously, but then, that's the case with most hardcore gangster rappers. Suspension of disbelief. Get into the right mind frame, and Bump Knucks will get you fired up. I couldn't give him five stars because there are some tired-sounding jams, but there are more good cuts than bad. High points are Tell 'em I'm here; Stock in the Game; Part of my Life. Hot!

80's are back and stronger.......2005-09-18
if you grew with or love the stronger side of new wave and the sounds of the 80's, then you will love this album.
To put it simple it's Missing Persons on a good writing day, minus the virtuoso but with a little more kick.
Give it a try. I did and I love it
Rise up- Dance to a different beat!.......2005-07-03
And that's what you'll do with this album. I absolutely love this album, it has so much energy and it makes me want to jump up and dance or jump or -something-. The title track is the best track (track 1 on the cd)but every track is good! they don't slow down and lose momentum at all...the good times keep on rollin with this album.
I also suggest listening to "The Sounds" and "The Epoxies" if you like this band.
I Got My New Glow!.......2005-06-20
Loved this cd.I first read about the start in a magazine and decided to check them out and they are amazing. My favorite track on this cd is Glimmerman.
Something different, something Good.......2005-03-06
theStart is fresh. There may be other bands with similar sounds, but I've yet to be exposed to them.
theStart mixes upbeat rhythms with edgy percussion and a strong dose of electronic sound to create something unusual and exciting.
I think most contemporary music is drab, cliche, and insincere. I can't say the same for theStart. They try to imbue their music with messages about pop culture, politics, and individuality, while still having fun.
I can't agree that people who like theStart would like Evanescence. I personally hate Evanescence and consider that to be some of that drab stuff I was mentioning above. theStart isn't about pseudo-depression, or not being accepted, they're really about having fun, and dancing.
As they say in their title song Shakedown, "rise up, dance to a different beat." theStart is quite a different beat, and I dance to them everytime.
(Isn't this a corny review? :-P)
I can bleed...........2004-05-16
So... they may be a bit MTV-pop-drivel-driven, and yes, alterna-grrl-rock... I still love this album. The catchy tunes and lyrics are refreshing and uplifting. Aimee's got one of those voices that does it for me. It's reminiscent of Ms. Stefani's, yet different all the same. The later tracks on this album are my personal favorite. I lived for "Her Song" for about three months, which is a long time for someone like me with an ever-changing appetite for music.
Death Via Satellite, the second START album (EP) is better track-for-track than Shakedown. I'd recommend picking that one up. It's got an unpolished vibe that makes it feel like it should have been theSTART's first major release.
If you really want to rock, find Electralux... Enjoy!

Grateful Feat or is it Little Dead.......2007-03-27
As a newly appointed 'Deadhead' I have to say that this album was a pleasant suprise. As you can tell from the reviews this is not one of the Dead's most likable albums. Maybe it's the purists that are still praising the material from the 60's and early 70's needlessly maligning this album, but for what ever reason just give it a chance.
This album was produced by Lowell George of Little Feat, and his presence is certainly noted here. It has that funky Little Feat feel to it. If your a fan of island/funk/reggae/rock this is the album for you, even if you don't expect it to come from the Grateful dead....
TAKE A WHOLE PAIL OF WATER JUST TO COOL YOU DOWN!.......2005-11-16
Funky fresh, I believe I have one more shout out left for the Grateful Dead at least. SHAKEDOWN STREET, the bands eclectic offerings from 1978.
This album was recorded near the end of the DONNA JEAN/KEITH GODCHEAUX era. These years closed when Keith Godcheaux died in a severe bike accident. Most will say what he brought to the band was a more funky feel- he also brought his wife- who had sex with everyone in the band on the reg.(Don't quote me on that.)
I'm really no extreme DEAD HEAD, but I can hold my own. Hey, I know what I like and what I don't, ain't that good enough. I play this record at parties all the time. Its great fun times.
GOOD LOVIN' yeah, its that one you are thinking of covered by Bobby Weir on vocals. Of course Pig Pen covered it years earlier with the Dead and was WAY better, this version isn't bad.
FRANCE is a strange worldly track with Donna Jean on vocals. Theres steal drums and stuff going on, you better not leave your seat.
SHAKEDOWN STREET* this song kicks. Very groovy, with a hard steady drum beat and cool lyrics. Don't tell me this town ain't got no heart....
SERENGETTI another worldly tune, still good.
FIRE ON THE MOUNTAIN* More funky stuff, this song goes well to accompany a white reggae revolution. bands like SUBLIME took there cues from this song.
I NEED A MIRACLE* A bluesy one by Bobby Weir. Some good lyrics in the Bobby weir fashion. "I need a woman 'bout twice my age..."
FROM THE HEART OF ME a little too much Donna Jean for one album but still, I can dig it here and there.
STAGGER LEE This song makes me picture Jerry pimpin' on a sidewalk. This is a lost time for the DEAD I think and that is why these tracks are so underated. I love this stuff.
NEW NEW MINGLEWOOD BLUES Oh wait, I'm sorry, this is the ALL NEW MINGLEWOOD BLUES, this is a rehashed version of a song they covered way back in the mid sixties. The original was better, but they added more verses on this one that are quite enjoyable.
IF I HAD THE WORLD TO GIVE as is usual, Jerry closes us out with a nice somewhat lengthy inspirational jam. God bless, Jerry.
SO thats it. SHAKEDOWN STREET is a classic studio DEAD.
I would recommend ONE FROM THE VAULT first for anyone trying to break into the DEAD, but if you want a funky, reggae, blues, psychedelic disco album for your next FREAK OUT....you don't gotta poke around, get SHAKEDOWN STREET.
Shakedown reaks :{.......2005-10-05
The Song Shakedown Street is cool, better Live, the rest is garbage, this is there worst album not "Steal your face"even thou it sounds way to sleepy, ask a real Deadhead in your area for a cool recording,my guess is a live recording, please see Grateful Dead movie C/D,that is Garcia playn some Saaweeeet! Guitar, seek the truth and stay free Peace Larry Smith of Saint- Rosa
Stop what your doin', cause' I'm about to ruin..........2005-02-22
Alright, those who are not yet converted to the GD flock: here is your opportunity to ease you in. Purchase this cd then feel yourself being whisked away to such global locations as France, a mountain, Serengetti, Donna Godchaux's heart, and Minglewood. It is clear that this cd was recorded with the intent to win over the entry level GD listener. Let me say, Mission Accomplished. It is a precious gift waiting for you to unlock its mysteries. All you have to do is buy it. I can hear the cd calling to you right now... Mortimer... Kristen... Charles... Buy the cd and be born again in the living fire of the mountain.
Don't tell me this ain't got no heart, just got to lookaround..........2005-02-06
There are a few bands I love enough to throw in an opinion when a "good work" is unfairly maligned. Shakedown Street is one of the more lively and unique recordings of the Dead in my opinion. Maybe it is because I was a teenager when this was released, but this Dead is fun and unique stuff. France, Fire on the Mountain, Shakedown Street, and others on here all sound very different which is testament to a band at a creative peak. Fun with an envelope filter. A treasure trove of new ideas flying around here. Listen to that guitar work in France! Out of left field, Garcia is swingin' like usual and Weir is on a tear! Fire on the Mountain is one of the best to me. This album grooves throughout!! The drumming on this album, seems to me, is outstanding. Oh, and Donna Godchaux puts some nice vocal touches on this one, better than most! I recorded most (1 or 2 aren't essential) of these songs to take with me on my travels and shared it with Tunisian sheepherders, Algerian teenagers, etc. (and many in Europe)who had never heard it before. I remember one of them picking up some silverware and just going nuts with the cool rhythms. I was begged to trade the tape for a local favorite, I couldn't part with it. Now I wish that I left them that present. Anyway, my take on sampling world opinion and my Western take on it - get it, Charming, GOOD STUFF!

Not a Zombie yet, but still Shakendown.......2004-11-12
With this album fresh in my mind, compliments of that spectacular yearly event known as Halloween, thought I'd post this review.
This is not to say it must be Halloween, a Gore Fest or a Fright Night to appreciate an album of "Rockabilly" songs about the dead, the undead, those soon to be dead and being evil, as one can enjoy such topics throughout the year. However, it does make such special occasions all the better, a Hell of alot more fun and will leave even non-zombies shakendown.
If you like Rockabilly/Horrorbilly check out "The Cramps."
If you like harder edged Rock/Punk songs about ghouls, martians and "hideous deformed two-headed monsters" check out "The Misfits."
A Psychobilly gem.......2004-08-03
I went into a record store whilst on holiday in the U.S.A and this record immediately jumped out at me -I mean ,what a cool title! I bought it on impulse along with some other records (including stuff by the Sharks and the Guana Batz)and it blew them out of the water. Particularly recommended are the tracks "Switchin' Heads","Hot Rod Hearse" and "Grave Digger", with the band switching from absurd comedy Honky Tonk to all out Psychobilly thrash a-la Demented Are Go. Since then I have also looked out their previous album "Blood, Sweat and Nitro" which also comes highly recommended. Having said all this, the album almost seems in danger of losing it's way after the panoramic "Fistfull of Pesos" producing it's one disappointment, the rather limp "1-800-EVIL" which is only guilty of not quite reaching the otherwise high standard of this great record.

I don't think BOB would like this one ...........2001-08-18
I bought this CD under the assumption that it would be remixed in more of a dub style. Boy was I wrong! This CD is remixed with a major rave/house music flavor. It just didn't seem right listening to these wonderful songs done in such a manor! I cannot wait to rid of this CD - I am disgusted to have it in my collection. Shame on me for not researching it more before purchasing it .... DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!

Wonderful.......2005-11-19
Noted rock critic Dave Marsh states in the booklet that comes with this cd that the Bobby Fuller 4 was one of the greatest rock and roll bands of all time. It's certainly hard to argue with that based upon this great music.
Much of this music comes from the hundred or so reel to reel tapes from the early phase of Bobby Fuller's career. What is really evident from this cd is the painstaking effort Bobby put into the craft of his music. Bobby Fuller was very much into electronics, could play multiple instruments, and designed and built his own home studio. Overall, this is one fantastic cd.
one word...EXCELLENT!!!!!.......2005-04-17
I discovered Bobby Fuller in the late 70s when I spotted an reissue LP of hits and rarities....I was hooked...(I remembered his I fought the law hit from 1966...when I was a teenager addicted to listening to the radio)...shortly afterwards...several more compilation LP's submerged...I grabbed those as well.
My Bobby Fuller collection consists of:
Shakedown-Texas tapes revisited
Never To Be Forgotten-box set plus LIVE cd
Best of Bobby Fuller Four
I fought the law/KRLA king of the wheels (2 on 1 cd)
El Paso Rock Vol 1
El Paso Rock Vol 2
Each of these cd's is remarkable in sound quality and loaded with gems...I also noticed....alternate versions of songs varies from cd to cd....Bobby sure liked to record alternate takes and he saved everything, it appears.....lucky for us....If you acquire all 6 of these cd's...I think you might possibly have everything that exists in his entire catalogue...
Here it is 2005...and I still get the same enthusiasm whenever I listen to these songs....
Had Bobby not perished so mysteriously, back in 1966....he may possibly have been Americas next Elvis or Buddy Holly....here's a last thought to leave you with.....did you realize that he recorded and composed these songs from this cd set....when he was a mere teenager????? He wasn't even 18 yet.....also....consider the maturity and lyrical content.....I am referring to his original material....not the covers.
Makes you wonder what really happened to Bobby and why....I have spent endless hours considering possibilities of the "whodunnit" theory.
NEVER TO BE FORGOTTEN
Shakedown is a rock and roll classic.......2003-04-14
I grew up with Bobby Fuller's music in El Paso in the early 60's and this CD takes me back to younger more innocent times. The incredible sounds that come from the CD are even more awesome when you remember they were recorded in his 'studio/living room' on Album Street in the Scotsdale subdivision of east El Paso-just 2 blocks from Jimbo's restaurant and ice cream parlor which had the best bean burritos in the Eastwood area!
Great sounds, great rock and roll. I listen to it all the time. I have seven Bobby Fuller CD's and this is one of my favorites.
His later CD's on the Mustang label include a lot of the same tunes and one can see how the early works were refined into even better sounds. Had Bobby not met such an untimely and mysterious death he would have been a performer of longevity and a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! Great lyrics, great drums, great guitar licks makes you want to find a girl and fall in love!
If you like rock an roll this is for you! Love songs, surf instrumentals, progressive country sounds, sixty's rock, it's all here. No disapointments here!
WOW :)))))).......2002-08-15
Absolutely incredible........................I listen to it in the car, on my MP3 player at the health club. My wife is getting tired of it
I sure as heck never will.....Their cover of I Want to Hold Your Hand is a very novel try by the band from West Texas - an admiral one.
Finding their music is like locating a long, lost friend :)
