One of the Best Albums of 1985.......2007-06-17
1985 was a good year for metal. CELTIC FROST had "To Mega Therion", EXODUS released thier first album "Bonded by Blood", VENOM was still around with "Possessed", and SLAYER put out the thrash/speed metal classic, "Hell Awaits". The album begins with a slow fade into the monstrous sounds of suffering and fire in hell. A demon yells it's blasphemy and we now here the beginning of the song, "Hell Awaits". The title track possibly has one of the longest intros to a song and what a great intro it is. SLAYER builds the opener with a barrage of mid tempo riffs and thundering bass. Then the band switches into high gear and all hell breaks loose. Tom Araya is at his most fast and furious with his singing and Jeff Hanneman and Kerry King play some of the fastest guitar work at the time. Next is "Kill Again". Another tune with a rather long build up but, it's good. This album has a lot of parts with just music and no singing which means there are lots of parts where you just thrash out! "At Dawn They Sleep" Is one of SLAYER's best songs ever. Lots of cool time changes in this song. "Praise of Death" is very brutal. It pounds you with a gallopping drum beat and a killer riff and is also fraught with many time changes. "Necrophiliac" is a love song with a dead body. This song is also a SLAYER classic. "Crypts of Eternity" is an ignored song I think. Personally, I would say that this song sounds a little like IRON MAIDEN. There are a couple of duel leads. The sructure of the track seems similar to what MAIDEN would do but, that's not a bad thing. SLAYER liked early IRON MAIDEN and this song is just evidence of SLAYER's musicianship. The cd closes with "Hardening of the Arteries". The shortest song on this very short album but, don't worry, it's a great tune. I would like to give this album a five but I can't because it's not a very long album. Plus, it only has seven songs. I really think SLAYER could have put more on "HELL AWAITS". If you have the band's box-set, you know what I'm talking about. The length of the album is the only problem I have with it. All the songs are good. I'll tell ya something else that makes this record stand out among the rest. Tom Araya's bass tone is clean on this album. You can really here him. He also plays very well. He's not just mimicking the guitars. Some of Tom's best bass playing is on this album. "Hell Awaits" is one of those albums that you have to have. Don't be a poser, just get it and be cool.

It definitely comes down to this one and Reign in Blood, and it's a tough decision. Agreed, Reign in Blood has the sound quality hands down, and it is THE classic Slayer album, but sometimes I have to go with Hell Awaits. Muddy recording cannot kill these demons. The title track is one of the most powerful moments in headbanger history. It leaves a crater wherever it's played. The imaginative instrumentation of At Dawn They Sleep maunders and mauls with the dementia of a rabid horde of bloodthirsty ghouls. All of the players are in top form.
Contrary to what many say, this music is not satanic. The lyrics are about demons and hell and butcherous hellspawn, but they are not satan worship. Kerry King likened Slayer's lyrics to horror stories.
One of the most amazing albums from one of the most influential artists in metal.
Slayer tries Metallica.......2007-04-15
Slayer and Metallica were basically the same band in the eighties. Metallica would play longer songs and Slayer would short songs. Hell Awaits proves that Slayer that could play just as long as Metallica. Not a weak track on this cd and I love every song on this cd. At Dawn They Sleep is probably my faviorte track on this cd.
More reverb than a Def Leppard album!.......2007-02-02
I like Slayer. I really do. This is one of the fastest, heaviest metal bands in existance, but I could never get in to their early albums, especially Hell Awaits. I tend to prefer their later albums like Reign in Blood, because they were much better produced. Rick Rubin made those records sound the way a speed metal record should, with everything up front in your face. Reign in Blood had the most "in your face" sound of any record I've ever heard. Hell Awaits on the other hand is just soaked in so much reverb that it sometimes reminds me of "Pyromania" by Def Leppard! This is one of the heaviest bands in existance. How is a speed metal band supposed to sound heavy when their producer insists on making them in to the speed metal version of Def Leppard? Thrash is supposed to be "in your face". There's no place for reverb on a speed metal record. You want to hear heavilly reverbed production, than go buy a Def Leppard CD! I myself prefer a more aggressive style that fits this kind of music. Down with reverb! I HATE reverb! Layers of reverb have no place in speed metal!
Hell Awaits indeed and it's well worth the trip even 20 years later!.......2006-08-03
"Hell Awaits" is classic Slayer! The confronting horrific imagery, the gruesome lyrics, the awesome shredding riffs, the fantastic crunching drumming, the anger drenched screaming vocals. It's all here in all its glory. This album marked a real step up in ferocity for these US youngsters. After ripping holes in the metal scene with their debut, there was really nothing else for these thrashers to do but try to outdo themselves with its follow-up. This is a faster Slayer, a heavier Slayer, and a darker, more satanic Slayer. Everything got turned up a notch and their trademark sound was comprehensively built upon with enthusiasm and raw talent.
I don't think there is a better introduction to an album than "Hell Awaits". It's no coincidence that the band started with this track for their also classic live album "Decade of Aggression". The words "join us" repeated over and over backwards in what sounds like a background of Hell itself. Then the guitars take over. Each subsequent riff is pure unadulterated Slayer and segues perfectly into the next until it builds up to climax and payoff, all before a single word is spoken. Other highlights for me are "Kill Again" and "Necrophiliac", both demonstrating the more ferocious side to this legendary band, but there are no filler tracks to be found.
I must admit that it took quite some time for this album to get its claws into me. I always preferred "Show No Mercy" and well...nothing compares with the legendary "Reign in Blood" that would soon follow. And yet 20 years on and this album really stands up tremendously well. What seemed fairly raw and chaotic at times when I was a teenager is now such a breath of fresh air when compared to the mechanical, occasionally lifeless proficiency of the modern generation of metal. That's not to say this is messy, as Slayer were a well-oiled machine by this stage and Dave Lombardo in particular could never be anything but perfect. It's just that there are riffs and solos flying everywhere. Tom seems to be struggling to keep up with the shredding music at times while blasphemously screaming out his lyrics. There's very much a live sound throughout with a production that just oozes passion and hunger. This is thrash in its purest form and I love it more than ever. If only they were still this good!
