Customer Reviews:
Hey, there's metal behind the Iron Curtain!.......2007-07-31
I remember when I first saw the video for "Bang" and heard that Gorky Park was from the dreaded Soviet Union. The idea that a hard rock band would emerge from the USSR, the evil enemy of countless action movies, was just too cool to be true. Besides, didn't they "hate our freedom", or was that a different Bush's arch nemesis? Well, it was Y&T that proclaimed "rock & roll's gonna change the world", and you have to give Gorky Park credit for trying to overcome our differences with the power of arena rock!
Still, when you take away the novelty factor what you're left with is a perfectly decent, though not particularly original hard rock/hair metal album. It's not quite at the Skid Row level, but it's about as good as most of what the L.A. bands were issuing at the time. Then again, if these guys had come from L.A, nobody would know their name. The album follows the basic formula, mixing rock anthems (Bang, Child of the Wind) with made for MTV ballads (Sometimes at Night). The band's very rocking version of the Who's "My Generation" is probably the album's best moment.
If you look at it objectively, this is probably a 3-3.5 star album, but I have to give it an extra star for helping to put a face (and sound) to the "Red Menace", and move us a bit further away from the Red Dawn stereotype.
Thank You Gorbachev!.......2006-10-06
The policy known as Glasnost & Perestroika (Openness & Restructuring) was the pathway for the world to meet the group Gorky Park. This is Russian Rock/Metal at it's finest. They even show their roots with a little bit of Russian peppered into 2 tracks (Bang & My Generation), as well as in their cover art.
There are a number of worthy tracks on this CD. "Bang" is a great opening track and it really gets you going. "My Generation" & "Danger" are two other tracks that really rock. "Action" is a detailed song about some of the places the band has toured and about the rock 'n' roll lifestyle that was so prevalent in the 80's and early 90's.
The ballads on here are also solid offerings. "Sometimes At Night" may be there best one lyrically, but "Try to Find Me" and "Fortress" are also good ways of showing their lighter side (which just about every hard rock/metal band felt they had to do at some point).
My favorite track on here is the seemingly underrated "Peace In Our Time" It's solid instrumentally, including a nice guitar solo. The lyrics are good, as they speak of the message of peace, which is still not the case in our world as of this review.
Over all, there's not a bad song on here. It's great that this CD was re-released, but it's still not easy to find. If you can get your hands on it, don't pass it up. It's a must for the hard rock/metal music fan.
It was supposed to be Billy Joel!!!!.......2004-11-26
This band visited my high school back in 1990. They seemed like nice guys but then again nice doesn't mean good. Look at the band Lifer. I met them at their release party and they were cool guys. Problem was the music was terrible. Same thing with Gorky Park. Maybe it was the fact we all thought we were going to see Billy Joel but instead we get.....GORKY PARK?? It's a moment I can reflect back on and laugh when I am awake but when I sleep at night I toss and turn with Bang playing in my nightmares endlessly. I then wake up in a cold sweat. I can understand and respect that every other review on here loves the album but I can honestly say I did not like the album at all. I remember when I received this CD as a gag gift. Within a year I threw it away.
My review.......2004-10-20
Why are you still reading the review? Go to the nearest shop and get that album.
This is their first album. I have all of their albums: Gorky Park, Moscow Calling, Stare, Protivofazza. Well I'm from Ukraine and it's much easier to find CD of Gorky Park here. If you need some of their mp3's just mail me at EETFUKExp@yahoo.com
Unfortunately this great band does not exist from 1998.
Also I recomend you to listen to the Russian band Aria(Àðèÿ) they also have awesome songs, but in Russian.
Great album when it came out - Still great today.......2004-06-20
I was a senior in high school when Gorky Park first broke onto U.S. radio. Having grown up during the Cold War, my friends and I were amazed to hear a Russian band on the radio. While on senior trip, we stopped at the Hard Rock Cafe in Dallas. The piece of memorabilia that most impressed me was a guitar sent over by Gorky Park. It was a beautiful red (what else?) with the Soviet and American flag side by side on the body. This was just one of the first signs of the end of the Cold War. Not just a great album musically, but one that has some historical significance. And for those of you who want more from Gorky Park, they have more albums available for download at allofmp3.

"Russian police & faceless corpse...James Horner's score".......2001-05-29
This is a wonderful adaption from the bestselling author Martin Cruz Smith and his number one book, from director Michael Apted and a very talented cast ~ William Hurt, Lee Marvin, Brian Dennehy (under-rated actor, now coming into his own) and Joanna Pacula...our story deals with three faceless corpse found in Moscow's Gorky Park, excellent behind the scenes of police work, no clues to be found. But to keep the adrenaline high and on course, we have our favorite composer James Horner, doing what he does best...painting the story on a musical canvas.
Let's look at some of the stand outs ~ "IRINA'S THEME", beautiful with a gentle sweetness of a harp intro, dreamlike waves hovering an electronic keyboard theme ~ "IRINA'S CHASE", percussion abounds blending with tubular bells, cascading into counterpoints of strings as brass undertones perfection is the key ~ "THE SABLE SHED", counter-balanced percussion, the tempo increases into string measures lifting a mask of cymbals creating a backdrop of intrigue ~ "RELEASING THE SABLES/END TITLES", only a film score fan would appreciate what Horner does with this closing cue...wraps it all up into one neat bundle, and "film-score-buffs"...this is a winner!

one of horner's better earlier scores.......2000-01-12
Gorky Park is one of Horner's better fusions of jazz/ rock and full orchestra. In the early 80's Horner employed pounding rhythms in his scores to 48 hours, Commando and Gorky Park. While the Russian influence is represented by uses of Tchaikovsky's 1812 overture, Horner again makes room for one of his sweeping love themes, as well as some deep brooding passages hinting at the corruption implicit in the film. The standout tracks, though, are the rock influenced action sequences which although reminiscent of the above mentioned scores (down to inheriting a ten note leitmotif played on steel drums, almost note for note), there's no denying that it represents Horners best synthesis of Orchestra and percussion. No matter how derivative the casual listener may deem these pieces to be, to the Horner afficionado, there's no denying their ability to get the heart pounding. Horner has since abandoned this genre in favour of the more romantic, sweeping epic (eg Legends of the Fall, Rocketeer and the ubiquitous Titanic). Grab this as an illustration of the best of a young, experimental James Horner in his prime.
EWWWWW!.......1999-11-25
I'm sorry Mr. Horner, but what were you doing making this score? Instead of your normal tones, we get this dreary, annoying, piece of music (I call it that loosely). Just listening to the track samplings here is enough to get someone suicidal! I just hope too many people don't subject themselves to this unmercilessly.
one of the best soundtracks in the history of music.......1999-11-10
A must have for everyone who likes thrilling atmospheres and genious melodies. Listen to it in absolute darkness, and play it loud! Warning: depressive people should not listen to it - you might shift into a mood to commit suicide! Oh, by the way: In this case "Gorky Park" is the name of the movie. Don't get confused by our russian friend who mixed it up with a russian rock band called "Gorky Park".
Essential early Horner.......1999-08-15
Gorky Park wasn't a very popular film at its release, and perhaps its box office got in the way of the recognition of the film's score, but Gorky Park, with its screenplay by Dennis Potter and direction by Michael Apted, is one of the most literate detective/spy films of the past several decades - and Horner's score is a neat fit to Potter's screenplay and Apted's direction. The score has a sense of mystery and intrigue, and acknowledges the great spy films of the past.

OZZY, SCORPIONS, MOTLEY CRUE, CINDERELLA - 'NUF SAID!.......2005-04-14
This is a really unique CD. It's got all the great 80's Metal bands set loose to belt out their favorite tunes. A great way to see another side of these guys and to get a feel for what influenced them when they were young and aspiring Headbangers. Some of their picks surprised me. I HAD to buy this so I could have every recording by OZZY. (I even have his funky "Shake Your Head" with Was (not Was) and his duet with Miss Piggy on "Kermit Unpigged".) His choice of "Purple Haze" on this CD was interesting. He nailed it as only Ozzy could. By the way, the correct title is, "Stairway to Heaven/Highway to Hell". Every Headbanger should have it!

Excellent Russian rock band.......2000-08-23
This is a hard rock Russian band, talented musicians although not headbangers like (my favorites) Slavonic Metal rockers Ariya. Park Gorkovo (Gorky Park) has been around for quite a while in Russia and Europe. I understand the band was promoted in the US by the late, great Frank Zappa. You'll find this CD has solid rock music, good beat, intriguing English lyrics. Worthy of support.
