Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Customer Reviews:
CD set is misnamed.......2007-06-08
They should have titled this "classical music for people who love classical music" because most of the selections are typical classical music. The title suggests it would be lively selections of "light classical" music that is more upbeat, i.e. Sabre Dance, etc. I really don't hate classical music at all and have many classical CDs in my collection but I really wanted to hear more exciting selections. I won't be purchasing any more of this set but if you like traditional classical music these are good one.
Do not Buy.......2007-02-21
I do know it says classical music for people who hate it, but serioulsly you would have better luck never listening to classical music again. The recordings are awfull and do not do justice to any of the composers. Buy something else.
Classical Music for People Who Hate Classical Music.......2007-01-30
We love this set of CD's. I just got a new copy because my kids keeping taking our first copy with them so that they can listen at work or in their bedrooms but then I can never find them.
Seek better versions.......2006-12-09
If you are fairly new to classical purchases then compilation CD's can be useful for deciding what to buy next. Sometimes you only need a small taste of a piece to inspire you to buy a release with the whole performance on. The problem with this compilation however is that most of the versions are poor in performance or recording quality (or both) when compared to the best versions and the fact that the conductors aren't even credited on the track listing made me suspect that this would be the case. One of my favorite classical pieces is Tchaikovsky's 1812 festival overture but if the first CD version I had heard had been the finale excerpt that is on this compilation I may not have gone on to buy the whole thing. Luckily I heard Adrian Leaper's version first and Adrian's version is rather good.
My classical CD buying experience is limited to only a couple of dozen discs but I have found that the Naxos and Deutshe Grammophon releases are fairly safe. Avoid any release which does not name the conductors on the track listing or sleeve notes.
It Is What It Is.......2006-10-27
It's fitting that this page is fraught with the same kind of silly snobbery that turns people off from classical music (and necessitates collections like this) in the first place.
Any criticism of this compilation, which focuses on the quality of the performances or the fact that many tracks are excerpts, misses the point. This is not a collection for people who consider such things, nor does it purport to be. The idea is to package as many ultra-famous classical melodies as possible in one affordable collection and market it to people who have never purchased a classical recording. As such, top-tier performances are likely too expensive to be sold so cheaply and are unnecessary anyway. Those of us who already know and love a piece or two can forgive the compilers the inclusion of sub-par recordings, when we are exposed to so many other beautiful pieces for the first time.
It probably comes as a shock for some to hear that most people are not familiar with these classics. We may hear snippets on TV or movies, but are left with no idea as to the composer or historical context. With that in mind, it is extremely intimidating to begin buying classical. I suppose those among us, who so thoroughly dismissed the very notion of a boxed set like this, would have us begin by buying full albums by reputable interpreters. Surprisingly enough though, the majority of people would consider that a tad cost-prohibitive.
To conclude, this is a STARTER collection. It will either affirm a listener's feelings about classical music or lead to an interest in purchasing better recordings. Ideally, I suppose the interpretations would be better, but, for reasons mentioned above, that just isn't in the cards for a collection of this nature. If you're familiar with 50 different recordings of "The Ring" series, or have season tickets to the New York Philharmonic, then this probably isn't for you. For us cretins with limited foreknowledge of classical music though, it serves as a succinct introduction with little to complain about.

Album Description
1999 debut album by death metal group featuring guitarist Erik Rutan, formerly of Ripping Corpse and Morbid Angel fame. 11 tracks.
Customer Reviews:
Brutally Heavy.......2006-08-04
Erik Rutan has been a leader in the death metal scene for a few years, now. His masterful work with Trey Azagthoth and Morbid Angel raised some eyebrows. Conquering the Throne was the debut album with his own band, Hate Eternal. Death metal has never really been known for positive band names and Hate Eternal is a very intimidating band name for the genre, to say the least. The music lives up to the title, as it is extremely ferocious and unrelenting.
Conquering the Throne starts off with 'Praise of the Almighty' and the blast beats, riffs and brutal vocals will literally pound your face again and again. 'Dogma Condemned' is a song that will make you think you are getting hit with bricks. 'Darkness by Oath' is the longest song present with a whopping time of just over four minutes, rather short for some death metal. (Nile creates some death metal epics over 9 minutes long) These death metal songs are fast, and will just keep pounding the listener into the ground.
This is about as heavy as extreme death metal gets. Bands that come close are Suffocation, Nile, and possibly Cryptopsy. Personally, I hear music similar to Morbid Angel's style, but that is expected because Rutan wrote a lot of the music in 'Domination' and 'Gateways to Annihilation.' I recently saw Hate Eternal live in the Spring of 2006 with Arch Enemy. As my good friend says, "seeing Hate Eternal live is about the equivelent of getting run over by a truck." The music is extremely heavy and unrelenting. Listeners will either enjoy Hate Eternal, or despise the style. Erik Rutan is a genius and his music is above all, extreme. \M/
Sub-par death metal.......2006-06-29
Just so you know, it's not because I don't like death metal I'm giving this album a low score. On the contrary, I think it's a very respectable style which can deliver some of the best music out there at its best. However, Hate Eternal do not represent the best death metal has to offer.
The biggest problem with "Conquering The Throne" is its fundamental musical direction. It is a simple fact that death metal bands generally sacrifice melody in pursuit of extremity. However they usually compensate for this with instrumental harmonies increasing the music's level of tightness, power and groove. Perfect examples of this ethic can be found in Decapitated, Malevolent Creation and above all the mighty Cryptopsy. Even Nile, who bear a striking resemblance to Hate Eternal in terms of style, pull themselves back from the brink of anti-musicality by use of their Egyptian thematic for atmosphere. However "Conquering The Throne" has no such trumph card. It sacrifices everything in pursuit of utter brutality, and while this is found, the music itself becoms an amelodic dirge.
The guitar work on this album, while it is tight and technical, the riffs themselves, the actual assemblances of chords, I found to be grating and ugly, and play little which could genuinely be called "memorable." They are really of little merit to anyone aside from aspiring death metal guitarists. An equally large problem can be found in the drumming. Instead of providing it's own layer to the music, it DOMINATES, blanketing and muffling everything else with a wall of blastbeats. If you want a band who actually use blastbeats in accordance with the rest of the music, try looking up Krisiun. While these rhythms are remarkably well played, and maintained at a speed which can be considered crazy even by the standards of death metal, they're of little value when the only purpose they serve is utter brutality in place of musicality. Oh, and the vocals? Average death metal fare; nothing more, nothing less.
So, in conclusion then: technical, brutal, and very, very ugly. Hate Eternal are a talented band, but the way their songs are written, putting speed and ferocity above all else, makes for a hell of a grating experience. Death metal virtuosos may enjoy it; everyone else is reccomended to stay far away.
Beware of Amazon, they have the wrong sku posted for this item.......2005-10-24
I've tried to order this c.d. off amazon 3 times and all 3 times it's been refunded by the seller, because of a bar code issue, meaning they never really had it in the first place, but amazon listed that they did. While this happens to only a small number of items on amazon, it can sometimes mean you getting the wrong c.d. because what you see on amazon isn't always the same as the seller gets an e-mail to send. I've been lucky that they caught mine.
cheers,
Oh by the way, the c.d. kicks ass. Way more grove than the following King of All Kings.
Good Stuff.......2005-07-05
Really good cd from Erik Rutan and Co. Songs have variety to them and the solos are very good.
Great death metal.......2005-07-05
I had first heard "King of All Kings". The only complaint I had was that the drums sounded paper thin. I recently heard "I, Monarch" and was impressed, so I had to hear where it all started. I am a HUGE fan of great drumming, and Tim Yeung DEFINITELY hit the spot. He reminds me of Tony Laureno and Dave Culross.
The only complaint I have is, yes, the songs run together. They are a bit samey, but I listen to Deeds of Flesh and it's hard to decipher their songs, so, I am used to it.
I am not going to bash the 'ole Slipknot fan but I will say this much...I am tired of death metal being called talentless. I had a teacher at school rip into about 18 different bands because "he plays guitar and listens to Dave Matthews and knows that they use 3 power chords" it irritates me just because he hates the growling.
Get this album, you won't be disappointed.

Customer Reviews:
Good, but not great selections given the title selected........2007-03-04
This CD contains some good pieces, but overall, the selections were not what I would have picked for a CD with this title. I used to think that I hated classical music, but now that I've sailed past 40 I have learned to enjoy it in almost every variety. Nevertheless, as a child of the Rock/Pop Music era, I can tell you most people today who think they hate classical music, think so because they've pretty much only heard the slower/less dramatic compositions. (I.e., "elevator" music.) The goal, of course, is to develop a real love for the genere, but in most cases, the introduction needs to be a "grabber." Perhaps I'm too skeptical, but while there is more than elevator music on this CD, I do not think it is on the whole upbeat or rythmatically appealing enough to sieze the interest of most of today's A.D.D. generation --- which is the presumable target audience.
Worthy on any level.......2002-01-23
I bought this cd for my father about 3 years ago. My father loved classical music. Actually, one might consider him quite the snob about classical music. Pop (was 83 at the time) and I (48 at the time) spent many an occasion listening to this wonderful cd. It has enough variety and familiar pieces (and yet, not the regular stuff) that we could let it play again and again and still be delighted with the pleasure that it brought to us both. I am listening to it even as I write this review. Buy, buy, buy! It is a PERFECT gift.
Humans Are Classically Stubborn.......2001-05-16
We humans are quite a stubborn bunch. Once we get something in our heads, it's hard to change our minds. I have been a life "shunner" of classical music. A pseudo snob, I couldn't waste time on music I couldn't.....A. Dance (poorly) to, or...B. Sing (horribly) along with. Yet in galleries, museums, or theatres, I would hear strains of truly beautiful music and would think "I just have to find out what that is!" Then, of course, I didn't. I finally forced myself to purchase this CD at the urging of my 12 year old and I fell in love. YOU know all of these pieces. YOU'VE heard them every time you cried during a tear-jerker or strolled through a museum. And YOU like them, you really, really like them. The CD has become one of my favorites and actually induced me to buy more classical music. The name of my new purchase? "MORE Classical Music For People Who Hate Classical Music." Hey -It's a start. Give this one a listen, it will seem like an old friend has come to visit. And you just might learn something.
The title says it all........1999-08-28
This CD is good for those who do not regularly collect classical CD's. If you don't really know much about classical music, but would like just a taste, this CD is for. This album is also good for those who love classical music, I bought it because it had all of my favorite classical works all on one CD. I can play a song at a get together and everyone there has heard the song some where at some point in their lives.

Pretty good for a remix album........2007-05-30
I'm not a fan of remix material. However, this is indeed a good remix album. The best tracks are Raptura (combichrist mix), Raptura (God Module Mix), and Forgotten Tears (Suicide Cammando mix). EBM is the style of music in case your out of the loop.

Great for home and classroom.......1999-03-21
No other composer so closely kept his fingers on the pulse of American thinking and gave the country so much of what it thought it wanted. "Yiddle on Your Fiddle" tells us more of the second-generation immigrants' desire to become Americanized than all the history and sociology books can ever do. So it is a double pleasure to announce the appearance of "Come on and Hear!: Early Songs by Irving Berlin, 1909-1915" and "Keep on Smiling: Songs by Irving Berlin, 1915-1918," two fantastic CDs or tapes on Oaktown label and released through a friendly little Connecticut company calling itself Original Cast Records. Between the two sets, you have 41 tracks of the Berlin output from "Everybody's Doing It Now" to "We're on Our Way to France." The soloist is Benjamin Sears, who with pianist Bradford Conner has something of a reputation around the Boston area. Now some of this material is duplicated by the more widely known Joan Morrison on two RCA Victor releases, possibly out of print by now; and like those discs could use another voice now and then. (Conner does join in where a duet is called for, but my point remains.) Sears is a capable if not an outstanding baritone, who does justice to these historic expressions of Americana. So not only do I recommend both of these sets for their enjoyment value, but I wish to continue to point out to Social Studies teachers how valuable sets like this would be to classes who have no concept of how people really felt (as opposed to what they merely said and did) "way back when." And I might even stick out my neck so far as to offer to come to any school (in reasonable distance of where I live) to give a sample lesson on how these sets can be used.
Average customer rating:

- A decent chance to hear the complete score
- Really helpful learning CD
- Every note exactly as it was written - Fabulous!

Conspicuous Extravagance.......2004-09-08
It takes much more than this generally lack-luster performance delivers to overcome the intrinsic embarrassments of 'Kiss Me Kate'. While minor misogynies were then more or less default, if not de riguer, it is doubtful even the nudge-nudge friendly audiences of the 1940's and `50's would have put up with Cole Porter's stale, striving, prep school vulgarities had he not possessed an uncommon lyric gift.
And the set is too long. No one (except, apparently, devotees unwilling to settle for less than every note) needs instrumental reprises and variation-less dance numbers--especially when no purpose is discernable beyond running up a second disc. Most CD players have a Repeat mode. (At least the McGlinn/Barstow/Hampson EMI effort offers up some interesting out-takes to pad the second side; this one kicks in 15'' of overtures.)
Barring the two leads, the cast is ho-hum, and while Thomas Allen has his moments, he will not be remembered for his Fred Graham.
Notwithstanding all of the above, one is tempted to declare it all worth putting up with just to hear Diana Montague sing 'So in Love'--possibly Porter's loveliest song. (Why has no one thought of doing the reprise as a duet?) She even renders listenable the insufferably adolescent 'I Hate Men'. There's just not enough for her to sing in this show. Unless money is no object, go--for Montague alone--for the highlights disc.
A decent chance to hear the complete score.......2003-12-11
Until you've heard the complete score to "Kiss Me, Kate" with Robert Russell Bennett's original orchestrations recorded in good, modern sound, you don't know what you've been missing. Matchless as the original Broadway leads were, neither of the recordings they made satisfy completely. Both the original Columbia and the Capitol remake are missing huge chunks of the score and neither adequately conveys the quality of the orchestrations even in the parts that are recorded.
So it is slightly frustrating that there have been two complete recordings of "Kiss Me, Kate" in modern sound featuring the original orchestrations, and both of them have significant problems. The earlier recording, an EMI release conducted by John McGlinn, is not currently available in the U.S., while this JAY release is conducted by John Owen Edwards. Even though the EMI is not available, I'm going to compare the two, for those who are interested.
Both recordings are well-conducted, but I feel McGlinn gets more out of the score than does Owen Edwards. McGlinn can often be a bit stodgy, but his "Kate" is just gorgeous. He does a better job of bringing out all the neat touches in the orchestration than does Owen Edwards, and he's also better in the jazzier sections. Owen Edwards does a good job, but it's sad to hear him completely miss some moments, like when he fails to slow down sufficiently for the crucial second "And you're mine, dear" in "Wunderbar." Overall, McGlinn just points things better without getting too fussy. If only the same could be said for his cast.
But both recordings fall down in their casts. As Fred/Petruchio, McGlinn's Thomas Hampson is completely at sea. The music doesn't lie well for him, seeming to mostly sit in the least attractive part of his range. And his readings of the dialogue that is included is labored and self-conscious. Thomas Allen, on this JAY release, sounds older than Hampson, but his basic sound seems more attractive to me, the music lies better for him, and his dialogue, if not great, is at least not painful.
It must be said, though, that Hampson has been coached thoroughly in the role, and is aware of every nuance. The trouble is that he overdelivers on every nuance, whereas Allen almost sounds like he's sight-reading some of the score. Still, he's preferable to Hampson. I wish, though, that the JAY people had realized that they were using the bowdlerized British edition of the score. In "I've Come to Wive It Wealthily in Padua," Allen sings "doggone nose" instead of "goddamned nose." It's just not the same.
As Lilli/Kate, EMI's Josephine Barstow tries hard, perhaps a bit too hard, but what she does seems to me mostly suitable for the role. She does well everywhere except "I Hate Men," in which her vocal style just doesn't work, and she is further hampered by some lyrics not usually heard, and with good reason. The rest of the time, she puts out 110 percent. I suspect some may find her a bit too operatic, but I'm convinced by her. JAY's Diana Montague sings well, but is a bit pallid and humorless. She could use more of Barstow's spunk.
And so it goes. As Lois/Bianca, EMI's Kim Criswell is a bit pinched and colorless. JAY's Diane Langton sounds a bit old for the role, with some of her top notes a tad frayed, but brings more humor and brio to the role in general, especially "Always True to You in My Fashion," and this is one song on which Owen Edwards surpasses McGlinn.
As Bill/Lucentio, EMI's George Dvorsky is OK but a little staid, with "Bianca" oversung. JAY's Graham Bickley is more winning, even if his British accent shows through at moments. Without oversinging "Bianca," he still sounds like he has a voice that might have been good for Fred/Petruchio, and I suspect he would have better in the role than either Hampson (well, I'm sure of that) or Allen.
On the other hand, EMI's gangsters, Robert Nichols and David Garrison, are a hoot, surpassing JAY's pair, who are certainly good enough. And the other supporting roles tend to be a bit better on the EMI, with Davis Gaines and John Mark Ainsley particularly funny in their introductory sections to "Tom, Dick or Harry," while their counterparts on JAY don't seem to realize they could be funny. On JAY, Shezwae Powell does a good job with "Another Op'nin'," but with McGlinn's fabulous conducting, Karla Burns is even better on EMI. Similarly, Paul Collis does a nice job on "Too Darn Hot" on JAY, but Damon Evans really sizzles on EMI.
EMI also has more interesting filler, with cut songs from "Kate," although JAY's filler of the overtures to "Can Can," "Jubilee," and "Out of This World" is certainly nice to have.
So, on balance the EMI is perhaps a little bit better, if you can get past Hampson. But as long as it's not available, this JAY version will serve adequately.
Really helpful learning CD.......2003-03-11
As an MD for an amateur production of Kiss Me Kate, I found this recording useful as it contains not only every single note in the score, but also every encore as well. It was really helpful in learning the orchestration, as the score was a piano reduction. It certainly saved a lot of time in rehearsal trying to work out who has what tune etc. - I could do it from memory in that I knew the trumpet had the tune there etc. The choreographer used this recording to estimate how long each dance was - something very important as other shows I have done the Choreographer was using a different version of the show (such as the broadway revival of Kiss Me Kate).
Singers can listen to this and know exactly what they will hear from the pit - which is always a helpful thing!! And less experienced singers (or non singers!!) can learn by ear.
I agree with another review that dislikes the singing - however my use was only for learning. The voices don't seem well suited for the parts, however they are not so bad that you cringe in horror - I think stopping after the first disc is a bit excessive!
Every note exactly as it was written - Fabulous!.......2002-05-09
Great CD - Don't be fooled by other 'jazzed up' versions - this is how it was written and how you'll normally hear it performed. A very gutsy and earthy performance all round. The original Broadway album, sounds great but has alot of "enhancements" which the composer never wanted put in and disapproved of. Go for this one if you want the true Kiss Me, Kate in it's full version - NO CUTS or HIGHLGHTS!
I never made it past disc one........2000-07-04
It's a shame the John McGlinn recording on EMI is out of print, because this travesty is no compensation at all. The singers are really, really bad. And the conductor fails to capture the swing of the score, leaving it sounding dull and lifeless. Run, don't walk, away from this CD.
