3 out of 5 stars Follow The Day.......2007-07-04

While surfing TV, on a SCRUBS re-run, I suddenly see a roomful of people in robes start into an infectious pop song. Based on this performance, I'm curious! It's the song called LIGHT AND DAY.
Research got me as far as this disc. But along the way, we learned that THE ETERNAL SUNLIGHT OF A SPOTLESS MIND film also happened to like this tune well enough to include it.

    2 out of 5 stars Is this children's music?.......2006-02-01

Lose the french horn, the flower-gazing feel-good aura, the gaudy on-stage robes, then expand the lyrics beyond the track title, and deLaughter (all the way to the bank, apparently) might have something worthy of adult listening. Ouch much!
P.S. Really, this represents the worst kind of psychedelic revival I've heard, the kind only Christian types could latch their lame, restrictive tastes onto. Yes, I said it!

3 out of 5 stars Buy Circulatory System Instead.......2005-10-04

This is interesting and has its uplifting moments, but it ultimately lacks substance. Circulatory System explores similar terrain but digs deeper (and soars higher) both musically and lyrically. I give Circulatory System five stars.

5 out of 5 stars Something truly new .......2005-08-16

Forget the hype that "new" "retro rock" bands get--- this band is probably the only TRULY new thing that has come up this decade. You have not heard music like this before. Perfectly crafted but not pretentious, simple messages about the beauty of life and music. This is what music is all about--- give the Spree a chance, you won't be disappointed.

    1 out of 5 stars polyphonic what?.......2005-04-24

I bought this CD based of some of the customer reviews. I was SO disappointed. If polyphonic means, no two singers ever hit the same tone nor do the voices fit to the music, then well, its polyphonic. The lyrics are just trite, the melodies are poor. Do yourself a favour and listen to the 'Long day' intro above. Do you really want to spend money on more than half an hour of that... that... electronical experiment? If so, my CD is for sale, and I hardly ever do that: usually I find something interesting in almost every kind of music. But in this polyphonic thing, there was just nothing to find.

5 out of 5 stars ~ THE PRIMARY COLORS OF RUSH ~.......2007-01-31

You know it! Take it from this fan too, I saw them quite a few times back then and have heard every note on every release many times - THIS ROCKS! The version of each song is selected nicely and very strong, each disk is fantastic to me. None of the enthusiasm or talent is missing, you could even say they have just gotten better over the years. By the way, Alex Lifeson is one of the longest-standing and best arena-rock guitarists on the planet (have to leave room for other talented galactic string benders I may not be aware of). Neil & Geddy are still spoken of with that same regard as well. This bands impact is huge! Who said you slow down when you get older??? Just watch the Rush In Rio dvd if you need further proof ... the Vapor Trails material (the whole darned concert actually) on there shows a band just finding its higher self. They rocked Rio's world those two nights. The psychedelic connection has been strengthened lately too it appears, maybe a great new stage is about to present itself? One can hope. That Hammersmith disk from 78 is especially sweet, maybe my favorite single cd offered. I do have to say that this is a five-star release if there ever was one (in my opinion, I love it!). Enjoy on a BIG POWERFUL SYSTEM for full effect ~ ~ ~

    4 out of 5 stars Worthwhile If You're a Rush Fan.......2006-11-10

If you enjoy Rush's more recent albums, you'll like this one. But even though the band is playing their newer (relatively speaking) material, they seem to have gone back to a more classic live sound. This sounds more like what the All The World's A Stage band would have sounded like if they had played Rush's songs from the 90's. So it is more of a raw live sound. And it's also nice to hear them do some of their older songs like Natural Science that were previously unavailable in a live version (at least as an official band release). Also included is a live show from the 70's that you'll like having in your collection because you can see the band's progression from the 2112 era to the era of Exit Stage Left. There's so little of live Rush from the 70's!!!!

5 out of 5 stars A very fine live rush album.......2006-06-07

Different stages is a very fine live album from Rush who are amongst my favourite progressive rock bands after Yes and Kansas. This compilation of three cd's contain some very fine songs in Limelight,Bastille day and Xanadu. This is the Rush collection to get as it contains material from their Atlantic label also.Highly recommended.

1 out of 5 stars More Condescending Tripe From Rush.......2006-06-06

Look, I have never liked this band. Someone I know well and who's opinion about music I respect highly recently insisted that I listen to this new live Rush CD with the presumption that I would "come around" and "change my way of thinking about Rush" after a listen to it. It didn't work. I find the vast majority of this band's material to be soulless, progressive technometal slop. In their attempt over the years to come off as being intelligent and studied in their approach to rock music they have only succeeded, in my opinion, at producing thirty years of thoroughly mechanical, pretentious, condescending tripe designed to show off each member's supposed musical prowess which is then summarily topped off with "oh so deep" pseudo-intellectual lyrics designed to make 9th grade bongbrains feel as if they are smarter than everyone else because they are listening to it. It's never worked on me and as far as I am concerned this live CD set containing concert material spanning almost their entire career just reinforces my opinions about them. Sorry all of you Rush fans, I just refuse to be converted.

5 out of 5 stars their best live album.......2006-05-16

I bought this set because of the 3rd cd. Being a longtime fan, I was dying to hear a concert from the 1978 era. Rush originally lost me on Exit...Stage left. Great songs, where did the guitars go?. Then their material got limper and limper, bottoming out with A Show of Hands. Still, being a huge fan, I bought everything holding out hope that some balls would return. After brief glimpses on Roll The Bones and Counterparts I had resigned my fate to knowing that Rush was lame now. Then came Different Stages. After hearing the versions of their newer songs (Bravado, Show don't Tell, Animate) I regained interst in all of the post-Pictures material. The sound is excellent and brings life to the cold, sterile, synthesized versions from the studio. Great set list (especially when factoring in the 1978 disc), covering their entire career. If you own nothing by Rush, this would be good place to start (along with The Spirit of Radio greatest hits). Also, about the 3rd disc: it sounds very raw, like there were no overdubs or tweaking at all. Interesting, but a hard listen.

5 out of 5 stars Taking the long road.......2007-02-25

Ruthie Foster shows the full range of her musicianship on this remarkable recording, which captures not only her rich voice but her wonderful sense of humor and love for music that stretches over a broad range of genres. Whether playing on a tango theme or drawing from her wonderful dip bag of folk music, Ruthie never fails to please the listener, especially on this album.

5 out of 5 stars If you can see her live, then: get! If not..........2006-12-04

...then you owe it to yourself to buy this album. You won't miss her on stage again: expect goose bumps, and maybe some damp eyes, just listening to the CD. This is one of the best live recordings -- of anyone -- that I have heard. Buy it now, as the first in your collection, and you can tell your friends later: "Ruthie Foster? Oh yeah, I know her music!"

    5 out of 5 stars The Best!!.......2005-06-15

Ruthie Foster is THE BEST pure singer I have ever heard. When she sings Walk On and/or Oh Susannah - chills...
I absolutely LOVE HER - not only her singing but her guitar playing also. Check out/download her video at Kerrville from the internet and see her perform. A genius who can sing anything: blues, folk, whatever. I LOVE her - she is my favorite singer. Both her Stages and Runaway Soul albums- whew!!
Wish she would perform on national TV...

5 out of 5 stars Powerful, Transcendently Beautiful!.......2004-11-11

A couple of weeks ago on a stiflingly sultry afternoon at the Texas Book Festival I heard in the distance this incredible voice singing the old Curtis Mayfield song, "People Get Ready." I moved quickly toward it and caught the last two minutes of Ruthie Foster's one hour set at the Entertainment Tent. In those two minutes, the gritty spirituality of her bluesy gospel rendition of that classic gave me the chills, and, I confess, watery eyes. She shook me. I told my wife that she was the greatest singer I had ever heard, and I'm not sure that I would qualify that even now. I ordered two of her CD's as soon as I could get to the internet and Amazon.com. The studio produced "Runaway Soul" is truly great, and I highly recommend it, but "Stages" is as close to perfection as any human has a right to expect. I agree with the other reviewer. It's the best live CD I own, with the possible exception of "James Brown at the Apollo!" Her rendition of "Oh, Susana," is revelatory. Foster discovers beneath the hokey joy of the tradition tune a transcendently beautiful lament. It is a shockingly insightful performance. Haunting. I could go on and on about other great numbers on the CD, but won't. Just buy it and enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Stages is Awesome.......2004-08-09

This is simply the best live album I have heard! Having seen Ruthie Foster live at the Canmore Folk Fest - Stages stays true to her performance and gives the listener insight in to the fabulous range and style of Ruthie Foster - highly recommended.

This 1974 album was actually Willie Nelson's second concept effort. He'd chronicled a man's life from cradle to grave on the brilliantly conceived but barely noticed 1972 RCA album Yesterday's Wine. Recorded in Muscle Shoals, Phases and Stages was an album he'd had in his mind since leaving RCA (where he'd first recorded several of the songs). It applied Willie's compositional insights to the emotional roller coaster that accompanies the breakup of a marriage. To achieve this, he melded new original compositions and older ones into a compelling, seamless exploration of emotions ranging from shock to anger to anguish and, finally, healing and acceptance. The first five numbers chronicle the woman's viewpoint. Nelson explores the male perspective on songs 6 through 11 with sympathetic accompaniment throughout from a rhythm section, Johnny Gimble's fiddle, and John Hughey's pedal steel. Despite being his final Atlantic album (the label soon folded its country division), Phases and Stages continued the upward trend in Willie's fortunes, culminating in his definitive concept album, 1975's Red Headed Stranger. --Rich Kienzle

    5 out of 5 stars My Phases...............2006-03-25

First heard this album when it was released. I thought it struck a great chord, having just exited a disastrous relationship. It helped me get over some of the problems at that time. Must have played it on vinyl everyday for a month. It was a great help.
    Good album!

5 out of 5 stars How About It Willie?.......2004-02-29

Many feel that Willie wrote the definitive country theme album in Red Headed Stranger. While it is as near a perfect gunslinger saga, ala Marty Robbins, still, Phases & Stages is a seamless story of love and breakup. Willie weaves his tale and juxtaposes the narrative through both partners in the relationship. In addition to being one of the most flawlessly crafted theme album, P&S brings together the deft session man of Muscle Soals famed "FAME STUDIOS" along with long time favorite Johnny Gimble on Fiddle.

True, Willie's tenure at Atlantic Records was somewhat uneven, however P&S stands tall alongside his best works. Remember this was at a crucial stage in Willie's career. He would soon put aside the industry tag of great song writer / good singer and hit the charts with Bloody Mary Morning and Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain, etc. I do long for Willie to revist the Muscle Soals Swampers. I would imagine they'd have a whole lot to say together. I'll be seeing Willie in a few short weeks at the Beacon Theatre in New York (May 17th). Maybe I'll ask him about it then.

    5 out of 5 stars Vintage Willie.......2003-12-14

"I Still Can't Believe That You're Gone" from this album is a killer and you should own this album just for that one song alone. Apart from the lyrics, which are brief and believable (a Willie trademark), there's the music which never fails to blow me away. I've seem many TABs for this song on the Web, but none captures what Willie does musically after the chorus, to get back to the verse. Willie spent many years as a sideman for some of the greats (and listening to jazz), and it all comes together in those fabulous passing tones he uses at that point. (If you like slow sad songs beautifully arranged, see also Mickey Newbury.)

5 out of 5 stars 25 stars is more like it - Willie's best album ever.......2003-08-05

This IS Willie's best album ever, period.

It's everything a concept album should be, and it really and truly shows you what a lyrical genius Willie is.

Phases and Stages is an album that I've listened to for over twenty years now, and it is the album that consistently evokes the strongest emotions in me. From tears to joy, aching loneliness to hope for a better tomorrow, this album never fails to move me.

I love Red Headed Stranger, Shotgun Willie, San Antonio Rose, but man oh man oh man, Phases and Stages is his best - and BY FAR.

Get it, listen with your eyes closed, and prepare to be moved. It's simply THAT good.

5 out of 5 stars What A Themematic Album Should Ought To Be.......2003-06-24

Long before Red Headed Stranger Willie concieved of this themeatic work and WoooooooooooooooEeeeeeeeeeeeeee This one sure as hell works from start to finish. I saw Willie this past Friday night at Westbury Music Fair and he still plays Blood Mary Morning with passion and fire. Willie's the greatest and this is surely one of his very best. Catch the man live. You will not be disappointed. I've seen him six times and he always delivers the goods.

I love this set. I have purchased many as gifts.
The creativity of this presentation makes a very attractive package not to mention the great variety of music included in the 5 CD's. The DVD gives a delightful picture of what it would be like to tour with Neil and the Band. My favorite quote from Neil on the DVD: "I'm burned out...". It's a little human touch to a very great performer.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE for Neil Diamond fans!.......2006-11-04

I was originally just going to order one as a gift for my brother -- I decided to buy one for myself as well. Glad I decided to order one for myself! What a treat and a MUST HAVE for all Neil Diamond fans. Next best thing to a live concert. I have attended five Neil Diamond concerts (so far) 1976 - Aladdin Theatre for the Performing Arts, Las Vegas, NV; 1983 - The Forum, Los Angeles, CA; 1985 - Capital Centre, Laurel, MD; 1995 - MGM Grand Gardens, Las Vegas, NV and 1999 - TD Waterhouse, Orlando, FL -- and STAGES rekindled fond memories of those concert experiences.

I just listened to this CD a few times the last couple of
days and I think it is the most beautiful music in the universe,
    not to forget Marie's voice.
Been listening to this CD since 1992 gets more beautiful with age.

5 out of 5 stars A must for all Roxette fans.......2006-08-19

This one is true blue Roxette albums with their signature style all over it. Calling them classic pop of the 90s would be unfair since their songs are timeless! The live songs are the ones to watch for. It makes you feel as though you were there with them on the stage. All in all a fantastic album and a must have for all Roxette fans!!!!

    5 out of 5 stars A true Joyride.......2005-08-31

I hear the songs and they take me back to the early 90's. excelent music

5 out of 5 stars Great all round.......2005-07-13

Like any good album this one really grows on you and it has become one of my all time favourites out of any group. Initially I didn;t like the live versions so much but after awhile they grew on me too. But I particularly love the other songs on this album which I think could have been released as singles and should be listened to by anyone. To me the album has a more folky countryish flavour to it than other Roxette albums but I like that aspect to it. It is a nice mellow album good for listening to on the road. I love the mooing cows on Fingertips, the helicopters on Queen of Rain. I love the nostalgic schoolkid feeling and imagery of Cinnamon Street, and the melancholic melodies of Never Is a Long Time and So Far Away. I love the one two three four, the riff and the Samsonite suitcase of Here Comes the Weekend, the great duo sound of Silver Blue and the quirky edgier lyrics of Keep me Waiting. And I like it when Per sings about the rising sun in Come Back Before You Leave.
Let it grow on you too. A must have

The 4 CD boxset shows the remarkable growth of a remarkable talent. He recorded for a mere 4 years - yet few artistes have had such an astonishing influence and impact.

The first 2 cds(Stockholm 67, Paris 68) capture the experience in all their early euphoria. CDs 3 & 4 - San Diego 69 and Atlanta 70 (the latter with Billy Cox replacing Noel Redding on bass), are much better as live recordings. The band here really cooks with blistering versions of older songs and some great new songs.

If you want to experience live Hendrix, then stages is as good a place to start as any.

      5 out of 5 stars A GREAT 4-CD LIVE COMPILATION SHOWING HENDRIX'S DIFFERENT STAGES!.......2006-10-03

I will be doing a review on the "NOW OUT OF PRINT" legendary historic landmark 4-CD boxset entitled "STAGES" by the late great guitar legend Jimi Hendrix. This beautifully packaged blue box, copper printed numbers and letters was originally released in 1991 by the old label called Reprise Records, a Time Warner Company. The Matrix or ID Number of this boxset is 9 26732-2. This historical boxset highlights the different phases and "STAGES" that would change through the years from 1967 to 1970 in Jimi's live performing. I do have this 4-CD boxset which I purchased from the MAIN Tower Records Watt Ave. store in 1991, in Sacramento, California. Rather than give you my views and opinions (I gave this 4-CD set 5 stars!) of this EXCELLENT boxset, I will quote what is on the attached inner sleave liner notes which accompanied the boxset word for word. it is as follows: Jimi Hendrix's appearances in Stockholm '67, Paris '68, San Diego '69 and Atlanta '70 set a standard for entertainment beyond any theater the world has known. From 1967's tightly compressed set to Atlanta's supernova solos, "STAGES" traces Jimi's ever-unravelling music through four years of ground-breaking performances. Each stage crystallizes an evolutionary plateau for the artist and deepens levels of revelation for us listeners.

The "STAGES" of Jimi's concert repertoire are all the more striking in view of a constantly re-worked "control group" of hit tunes common to each set. For example, we hear "Purple Haze," a staple number at most Hendrix gigs, take on splashy altered chords and re-vamped rhythms by the time of its Atlanta incarnation. Relative to earlier Jimi Hendrix Experience versions of "Purple Haze," where the music is carved out in lurching chunks, Jimi's 1970 style with Billy Cox on Bass achieves a molten streamlined flow. Hearing such multiple renditions in "STAGES" one becomes aware that while the song may be the same, the music is NOT.

Jimi constantly improvised. His performances changed and evolved radically from one concert to the next. So much depended on the ambiance of his surroundings, on the way his own moods interacted with the collective tenor of the Vietnam-era crowds. A continuous stream of ingenious melodies played delicate balancing acts with erratically fragile sound systems. The results were uniquely composed guitar symphonies on a nightly basis.

These are the "STAGES" of a genius's music. These are the performance pillars upon which a master's legacy rests. Written by Michael Fairchild.

Jimi's Stockholm and Paris gigs were recorded for European radio under primitive live-rock conditions. Radio personnel in neither country had equipment designed for music of such distortion-drenched volume, simply because volume-rock was still a brand new art. Although Jimi's radio tapes can't match the multi-track fidelity of San Diego and Atlanta, what is heard is more than enough to discern the band's early "STAGES" with Mt. Everest-pushed-inside-your-ear power! Written by The Producers.

In closing, I don't feel that I have very much to add other than it is a GREAT boxset and I highly recommend this boxset as a true testament of Jimi's creative and masterful guitar playing. Jimi is STILL AND ALWAYS WILL BE, THE GREATEST GUITARIST THAT EVER LIVED! I hope you enjoyed reading this review and I hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. JIMI LIVES! LONG LIVE ROCK N' ROLL! Take care, J.L.

5 out of 5 stars Holy smokes! Jimi live in 4 well recorded shows. Yummy........2006-02-20

I was lucky, in a sense, I bought the cassette version of this set years ago. It made a great box set then and would still be lovely if it was still in print. I see the price for this CD set gets kinda high. A shame cuz the music is a real treasure.

Four shows from four different years. Great idea. I'm pleased that the Jimi Hendrix estate is continuing to officially release more and more of his music. He apparently did recording of his shows and his many jam sessions after shows with other musicians. He also recorded a lot of studio material that never got released.

One of the tricks to Jimi gigs is to find well recorded ones. Those who originally released this set were able to use well recorded shows and, I assume, clean them up so that they make for a great listen. If you get the chance, I highly recommend this set. For any Jimi fan it's a must. As you probably know, he was one of those artists who was both strong in the studio as well as dynamic live. This set gives you hours of proof of what he could do live. Yup. chrisbct@hotmail.com

4 out of 5 stars Great Overview of Jimi's Career.......2006-01-19

The idea behind this box set was to take four similar concerts, one from each year he toured between '67 and '70. This gives the listener the opportunity to see how Jimi and the band changed the songs over the years. The set lists don't exactly match, but have a fair amount of overlap. The '69 and '70 shows are the best with jimi and the band playing great. The sound quality is good on all of the shows. I wouldn't recommend this as a first purchase for Jimi material, but for any fan it's worth having.

      5 out of 5 stars Awaiting Reissue..........2004-08-19

This is the ultimate Hendrix box set. It contains about four hours of live material. The following concerts: Stockholm '67, Paris '68, San Diego '69 and Atlanta '70 are each presented in full and also in very good sonic quality. Each one is a jaw-dropping performance, to say the least. There's one from each year he toured, you can sort of get an idea of how Jimi's stage-approach changed from when he started touring as the "Jimi Hendrix Experience" to when he was calling his band the "Cry of Love Band." All these concerts were put out of print when the Hendrix family took control of all the Jimi Hendrix material in the mid-90s and formed the MCA "Experience Hendrix LLC." The people in charge decided that there were too many CDs already in print and many misrepresented the material. Especially the various releases of studio cuts, like Midnight Lightning and Voodoo Soup where some of the songs had posthumously overdubbed drum and bass parts for some reason. Therefore, they put all the Hendrix CDs out of print to start with a clean catalogue. So far, we've seen them release Jimi's concerts from Woodstock, Fillmore East (only a selection from all four shows albeit, but a good selection), Isle of Wight, a more complete BBC Sessions, the second set of Berkeley (why not the first set? nobody knows) and of course the studio material: South Saturn Delta and First Rays. The concerts that they put out of print will be released later (it's not a question of "if"), but as it is, Hendrix fans must buy this stuff used. On the other hand, you can buy new copies of many rare Hendrix comcerts, mail order, from daggerecords.com and purplehazerecords.com (even the Stockholm concert from Stages). Stages can be had for anywhere between forty and sixty dollars on ebay or Amazon. Amazon sellers are charging too much currently.

4 out of 5 stars Great music, bad packaging.......2005-11-05

The reviewer below is absolutely right: the two studio tracks are very out of place and should NOT be on this remastered cd. But not just because they don't fit well with the live tracks, or because they are quite poor songs (especially "Empty Inside", a very lame ballad). No, even worse, because this means that live songs which were originally included in the vinyl version (i.e. "Allied Forces") have been left out of the cd!

You really have to wonder who chooses to put studio tracks instead of live tracks on a live album. What a lack of care by the record company. No wonder people rather download songs from the internet than buy cd's.

This important remark aside, the live music on this CD is great, especially Never Surrender, Magic Power, A World of Fantasy and Fight the Good Fight. They often sound even better live than in their (often too polished) studio versions, making this pretty much the best overview of Triumph's music around.

4 out of 5 stars A Triumph In Live Concert Recording.......2005-03-26

There is nothing like a good live album when it comes to big arena-level rock. Triumph were specialists in the field of concert performance and this remaster of their 1985 Concert piece entitled "Stages" is a testament to that fact. The CD was originally recorded over the course of several of the bands tours, so the fact that is crosses many years in their career makes it all that much more interesting to listen to. Like all live albums of the time, this particular one did not skimp on including all of the classic numbers. The radio hits as well as the fan favorites are all here to listen to in a fresh and cleaner production.

For those fans who already own the original version of the CD you will be happy to know that the drum solo by Gil Moore that was excluded on the release when medium went from vinyl to CD is included once again. The surprise to me was still leaving the two studio tracks that were here instead of perhaps modifying it for an unreleased or unheard classic. I thought it would have been prudent to move them to a different remaster, but they did not do anything different on that end.

As with the other remasters in the Triumph catalog there is no bonus material included. I was not happy about this fact, but do enjoy seeing the time taken to expand on the original booklet artwork as well as making sure that the production was as concise and clean as possible. Triumph were one of those bands that you just had to see in concert, and owning this remaster just made me relive the experience all over again. They are one group that I hope does some sort of reunion sometime soon.
