Amazon.com Music Reviews
Young R&B star Mya got some mileage from her 1998 debut album's "It's All About Me" and "My First Night with You," but made her deepest marks that year with cameos on two film-related hip-hop singles, Pras Michel's "Ghetto Supastar" and Blackstreet's "Take Me There." Back with her own second release, Fear of Flying, she aims to solidify her identity. The promising title--perhaps a nod to Erica Jong's groundbreaking '70s novel about liberated female sexuality?--turns out to be a reference to commitment-phobia. The high must be followed by heartbreak, the song implies. That theme resounds in various ways through many of the record's other tracks, from the sneering "Case of the Ex" to the bouncing "Lie Detector" (which showcases dancehall king Beenie Man). Mya grabs for a piece of her own freedom with the party celebration and Left Eye duet "Takin' Me Over," which comes as a welcome change of pace from the focus on failed romance. Fear of Flying is hardly a great album, but it does represent a real step forward for the singer. --Bob Roget

Her Best Album Thus Far.......2007-03-02
Mya may not have the best voice in the industry, but she can put together a pretty solid album. This album went in a different direction of her first album. The album was strong in the beginning and end and a few fillers in the middle. I enjoyed "Case of the Ex", "Best of Me", "Can't Believe" which should've been a single, and "Man of My Life". Mya really spread her wings on this album. Can't wait for her next CD.
Her BEST Album!!!1.......2006-12-02
I love this cd!!! it is so great!! i loved mya's music eva since her first video...this is tha total opposite of what happens to most artists on their second album (it usually sucks) This is without a doubt in my mind, Mya's best album!!! I have the re-released version with FREE on it. I love almost all the songs. My favorites are:
Can't Believe
Lie Detector
That's Why I Wanna Fight

Fear of Flying begins with strong up-tempo tracks, but as the album winds (and slows) down, results are mixed.

Fear Of Flying-Her coming-of-age.......2005-05-14
I remember this album when I was in the 7th grade and loved the single Best Of Me with Jadakiss. I played this album constantly. Fear Of Flying is about growing up,learning lessons, taking chances, listening to others and minding your heart. Mya takes steps, makes those moves, and soars with this album that exceeds all possibilities and fulfills all expectations. This album contains sassy, sexy, soulful and wise,hip-hop informed, and R&B flavored, laced with heartfelt singing and state of the art beats. This album took Mya into new uncharted territory and delivers an R&B/pop sound that signals maturity and a new outlook. This album has been certified Platinum. Remember, this was 2000. Mya was 21 or 20 when she recorded this album.

Hilarious AND Brilliant.......2003-05-01
What makes this CD so great is despite rap being one of my least favorite musical genres, these are really good tunes! They're lyrically hysterical AND they rock!
It's a short list of films that can bear repetition. This one does. My copy has survived heavy usage for almost 10(!) years, but the soundtrack has the full versions of the songs.
See it, buy it, love it!
Fear of A Good Review.......2002-06-07
I thought I was the only one that got this movie and it's songs. The tracks are very reminicent of the early stages of hip-hop but it's meant to be that way. The lyrics are hilarious and even more so if you have experienced the movie. Once you have seen the movie, this soundtrack is a must. However, the soundtrack is strong enough to stand on it's own even without "A Gangter's Life Ain't fun." You will enjoy it, especially if you grew up listening to hip-hop.
Wear Your Hats!.......2002-05-15
Wear Your Hats! The movie is great(like Spinal Tap and CB4), but the soundtrack is unreal! You will sing along & laugh to every track, see the movie first to get the full effect. You will become a N.W.H. fan for life!
brilliant!.......2001-02-17
This is as funny a CD as I've ever heard. Rusty Cundieff's songs are incredibly deft (not def, although they're that, too) in their mixing of parody, verbal dexterity and even some internal rhymes that put the average busta to shame. The movie, of course, is brilliant as well.
A personal favorite, from "Come Pet ...": "It's our job to educate, infiltrate or shred 'em/So c'mon, let's spread 'em ..."
The only thing that keeps it from five stars is the idiotic "White Cops On Dope," which isn't in the movie and shouldn't have been on the CD. And why isn't "A Gangsta's Life Ain't Easy" (the song that's playing while Ice Cold is maxin' and relaxin' in the hot tub wit' his ...) on here?
Now see me..........2001-02-08
Whether you sport a fedora, a babushka or some Horton hears a Who type lid, this CD has something for you: phat beats (My Peanuts), dope rhymes (Grab Yo Stuff), smooth lyrical prowress (White Cops on Dope) and social consciousness (Come and Pet the P.U.S.S.Y.). Just look at some other song titles: Wear Yo Hat (Buried and Bald), F@#$ the Security Guards, Booty Juice. The words speak to me on a very intimite level. This CD changed my life.
I agree with Eddie about the necessity of seeing this movie. It should be required viewing for anyone who owns a rap album. In fact, they should make a sequal to this landmark film. With people like Puffy, Eminem and Will Smith dominating the charts, there are countless possibilities for lampooning.
Buy the CD. Listen to the CD. Love the CD.

hella great.......2003-04-01
nefertiti shows that women arent just for soul and r&b, with crazy hard flow, she brings one of the freshest, hardest, dopest albums since boss was rappin the gangsta shiit, the best cut on this is with out a doubt, Mecca to watts, with hard hittin bass lines which drive your neck in to a everlasting wiplash. the other cuts are just as great with mad production by rakim and some other producers that makes the album a classic in my opinion. with slamming funk/gangsta beats and a women thats not afraid to tell em whos on the mic. some might say her flows reminds of salt-n-pepa, I say forgett salt-n-pepa it`s all about nefertiti.

Compared to the complex psyche of Del and the Souls of Mischief's interwoven rhyme schemes, Casual was the most conventional of the Bay Area's Hieroglyphics, yet few would to be foolish enough to dismiss him as any average MC. The very essence of a battle rapper, Casual was a braggadocio maestro who badgered the competition into submission with his freestyle-infused lyrics. Fear Itself perhaps represented the zenith of the Hiero's abilities. The most lyrically and musically consistent album the collective ever put out, Fear Itself had no end of impressive lyrics or tracks. On the latter end, producer Domino and fellow Hiero members put many of their obscure breakbeats to use, filling the album with thick, rolling bass lines ("Me-O-Mi-O") expressive jazz melodies ("Thoughts of the Thoughtful") and crashing drum marches ("Chained Minds"). Holding up his end of the bargain, Casual was relentless, straight-smacking MCs down on "That's How It Is," "You Flunked," and "Lose in the End," but still taking enough time to sleep with his best friends' girls ("I Didn't Mean To"). --Oliver Wang
Customer Reviews:
Follow the funk..........2003-03-03
"Came from Oakland/Grew up under Too $hort..."
Of all the Heiro members, Casual was the most grounded in the Oaktown pimp style that was a staple in Oakland, popularized by people like Too $hort and Spice 1. Casual serves some of that in this album...with a Heiro twist.
While Del and the Souls Of Mischief's beats are a lot more abstract, Casual displays a lot more funk. Domino starts the album off by taking a Roy Ayers break and adding some bongos to make heads nod right off the bat. A lot of the beats go from the drum-heavy tracks (like "That's How It Is", "Me-O-Mi-O", "Get Off It") to the laid back funk ("Follow the Funk", and "Thoughts for the Thoughtful", another Roy Ayers break.) all designed to make heads nod.
Casual is capable of dropping punchlines at thr drop of a hat. He has a field day dissing rappers that "Bit so hard I thought it was a quote!" There are many choice quotables on this album. Thing is, since this is straight from the Bay area, you have to make records about mackin'. And that he does with "I Didn't Mean To", one of the few songs that got some airplay.
The crew jumps in for a few songs. "Who's It On" features Pep Love (who almost sounds like Dres of the Black Sheep) and Del. Del also shows up for "A Little Something".
The most notable appearance is from a newcomer named SAAFIR THE SAUCY NOMAD, who makes his first appearance on "That B.S.", where he basically screws around in the studio. Who would've known at the time that this man would lay the lyrical SMACKDOWN on Casual on the Wake Up Show a few years later? Cas certainly didn't!
Sadly, Casual would abandon the funky beats he had on this album in favor of more Casio-based garbage on his second album, MEANWHILE (which was a limited release), and his third album, HE THINK HE RAW. Looks like someone needs to dig up Roy Ayers' COFFY SOUNDTRACK again!
This album is a must have for any Heiro-addict, as well as anyone who is interested in lyricism.
Will Heiro ever get their groove back? I sincerely hope so...
Classic Debut.......2001-07-23
Casual's raw energy over mostly domino-produced beats is an excellent combination. Casual's mic presence is unmatched, he rips it on each track. Guest appearances by Del and Pep Love on "Who's It On" bring and amazingly dope cut. Peep this album.
Better than Ducks and Stairs.......2001-07-20
For all those people who go and buy Ugly Duckling aaand People Under the Stairs, What they do now used to be innovative. Hiero is an example. Buythis CD instead and get some real hip hop instead of some people wishing that they were Tribe Called Quest or Souls of Mischief. Dope Rhymes, Tight production. Real Hip Hop that's actually from the early 90s.
casual nonchalance.......2001-07-16
i bought this at the advice of a friend. i'm not sorry i listened to that friend, but i can't put casual on the same pedastal.
casual has flow for days. prides himself on the art of freestyle. but freestyles are usually unfocused (quips and jaw-dropping insults that'll test your REW button). and that rule isn't broken here.
i take pleasure in one-liners as much as anyone. but not as much as i did when battle rapping was more fresh....'be thousand' is a welcome diversion from redundancy. so is the witty 'i didn't mean to' where cas waxes about being with his friend's girl.
the james todd smith sample on 'you flunked' made me smile. 'givin you all a big F' from walking with a panther...
del the funkee homosapien is a better rep of casual's crew, the hieroglyphics...check del out.
Timeless Hard Rhymes.......2001-07-04
Casual is still an unapologetic battle rhymer. In his voice you hear the power and arrogance that he needs to dispatch other rappers in face to face combat. Lyrical battling is alive and well in 2K1 and this album still rocks. It has a jazzy vibe kind of like 93 til or Coast II Coast and I put it up there with those two as West side classics. Cas should be dropping his follow up which is almost ten years late, but joints like Chained Minds, Thats How it IS, and This is how we rip will satisfy.

Customer Reviews:
CD 2 is what you should be buying this album for!.......2006-03-09
CD 1 of Fear of Flying is competent intelligent drum n bass, good but not great. While it uses some great instrumental samples, upbeat basslines, and nice vocals and breaks where it counts, it suffers from the indulgent monotony of most contemporary music of this genre, where it seems like the artist doesn't know how to end or "climax" a song. (3 stars for CD 1)
However, CD 2 is definitely more interesting music, delving into dub stylings with a range of masterful toasters for the most part, along with some other fine midpace instrumental and female vocalist tracks. This bonus CD was a total surprise, and more than made up for the broken expectations of CD 1.
CD 2 is worth the album price alone, as it's expressive of the production skills and range of this solid artist, and more stimulating music to listen to because of it. Maximum respect to the one like Big Bud!
Big Bud's Stunning first Album, on his new Label.............2005-08-24
Big Bud, although not exactly being a prolific artist, he has produced a handful of astonishing good albums, that were released by the LTJ Bukem helmed 'Good Looking' label ("Infinity + Infinity", "Late Night Blues", "Producer 07"), and brilliantly showcased his talents for creating some of the most sublime 'Ambient breaks/Drum'n'Bass', within the genre. (and in the case of "Late Night Blues", dabbling in downtempo Hip-Hop/Jazz). But Big Bud is no longer with the 'Good Looking' label, and has since setup his own label (Soundtrax Records), and this album "Fear of Flying" (named because of recently conquering his fear of flying), not only references the skillfully implemented set of earthy breaks, organically midtempo flourishes, and Nocturnal Drum'n'bass for which he became known (Disc 1), but he's now exploring a more diverse arrangement of genres, (more specifically Ethnic fusion): Worldbeat, Nu-Jazz, Dancehall, Electronica, Asian beats, Rhythm & Blues & Dub, which are a mix of tracks that feature Various
vocalists, as well as incredible instrumental tracks (Disc 2), Big Bud further expands his considerable production talents, by offering an album that is possibly his most ambitious and comprehensive release yet.
Disc 1: This is the disk that will be of most interest to those that (Like me), that have been following his work, since his days with the 'Good Looking' intelligent Drum'n'Bass label, and although the variety of Drum 'n Bass here, encompasses more than just the clinical and soothing style of Drum 'n Bass from Big Bud's previous label "Good Looking" records, there is still enough ambient breaks here, for those that have followed his work to thoroughly enjoy, this 76 min mixed CD.
"Blue 4 U" takes the moody ambience of a brooding horror --themed soundtrack, and layers sections of clean, mannered ambient drum breaks over it, to mesmerising effect, the ingenious use of a far-Eastern vocal chant that punctuates the instrumental is superbly implemented. "Soundtrax" works with a throbbing bassline, over which an Arpeggio sample runs alongside shimmering electronic sounds, making this superb track, more of an excursion into progressive breakbeat territory. "Soul Something" is a hugely impressive attempt, at fusing soul with Drum 'n Bass and is a throw back to the early beginnings of Drum 'n Bass with a smooth elegant drum arrangements mixing perfectly with a harmonious male soul-styled vocal, and has more in common with 'Goldie's' earlier vocal Drum 'n' Bass tracks (think: "Inner city life"), than anything from his previous time spent with the 'Good Looking' label. "Miracle" is just that....a miracle of production talent. Imagine, a deep droning bassline, with frenetic drum breaks, and a charged synth over which a new age-referencing subdued Sax, nestles in the background, its the sort of considered and smooth instruemental fusion, that worked so brilliantly on LTJ Bukem's 'Journey Inwards' album. "Children of Jah" is a reggae-fusion, intergrated with Drum 'n' Bass, taking a heavy kick drum, and using the pumped up instrumentation of dancehall (albeit slightly sped up), and a reggae vocal, chanting the slogan "Children of Jah", here...Big Bud skillfully layers kinetic breakbeats arrangements, to produce a track that feels like a tribute to old-skool Jungle (albeit of a more subdued nature). And its a track that has that cross-ethnic feel, that is explored in much greater detail on the second disk.
"Red Snapper" is a deceptively simple track....for what seems to be nothing more than a slightly ominous Drum break, and subtle bass effects. But listen closely, and you'll hear many subtle changes and effects being applied to the sound, that don't fully sink in, on the first listen. Keyboard sounds regularly intervine, bass sounds are manipulated and swirling electronic sounds are carefully filtered in and out of the mix. It's initially one of the simplest tracks on the album, but also one of the most expertly produced tracks, that manages to sound better and better with each listen. "Inside Information" uses a fantastic flamenco/slide guitar, to complement the slick, male..Soul vocal, and the vocals sound like there were destined for a a brilliant Soul/R&B track. But was nicked by Big Bud and chosen to sit against his smooth Drum Breaks and sensual flamenco guitar sounds, to produce a fabulous fusion of Spanish-inspired beakbeat, mixed with U.K. Soul vocals, tying the whole thing together. (almost definitely one of my favourite tracks).
Disc 2: Having flown to various parts of the world to record vocals for several tracks, the second disk is more is a far more musically diverse collection of tracks, with the intergration of various MC's/ Rappers & Vocalists contributing to a handful of tracks.
First track to kick off the second disk, is the street-smart reggae-tinged rhythms of "Super8Skank" with vocalist 'Hooligan' lending a confident swagger, over which he toasts on the impressively upbeat track, that features a marvellous trumpet section, that mimics the exuberance of Ska music. "Bubblin" slows the temp down somewhat, and feels closer to midtempo Dub, with a strong reverberated bass playing throughout and the dancehall-styled rapper 'MC. Teknik' laying down a slightly boisterous rap about cruising with girls.
"How I Make My G's" (feat G Rhymes), is a shimmering reggae track, with a decidedly laid back feel, but 'G Rhymes' chats with a muscular swagger, and its the sort of track that has the bright and poignant hanging out feeling of 'Lovers Rock', but more contemporary in sound. "Fan The Flame" is a superb example of electronic Dub....heavy on bass, with electronically sampled percussion and rhythms, it has toaster "Dan Marcus" throwing down lyrics with a decidedly carefree approach that perfectly complements the two styles coming together (think a "Sean Paul" radio-friendly electronic dancehall). "Gimme De Woman" is an extremely impressive fusion of world music / Worldbeat sounds, that hits with the rhythmic Afro-centric percussion, that is spectacular in arrangement and lends a more organic, song-based feel to the sort of the peaceful chanting of singer 'Lugua's' vocals overlaid, which sounds authentically hypnotic. "Just Can't Hold Me Down", takes the unlikely pairing of a Nu-Jazz sound that takes retro melodies with subtly modern sounds, and matches it with the Ragga singing of 'Dan Marcus' to winning effect....and "Catch 22" coaxes an impressive beat-driven soul-referencing groove and fuses the Jamaican-soul singing of 'Mwenga', in one of the most reflective tracks.
Big Bud is arguably a producer that can make his instrumental tracks, as equally strong as his vocal tracks (in some cases arguably even stronger), and as such, the instrumental cuts here, are nothing short of stunning. Whether it's the delicate eastern-tinged flavour of 'Lazy Iguana', which gently draws the listener in, with its soothing and natural ambience, it's the sort of chilled sounds, that are of the highest order. And only the liquid smooth breaks of 'Stinkweed', which references his early work, but minus the bass sounds & contains a more electronic feel. And the melodic structure & elegantly cinematic reflective programming of 'Impressions' that feels like a much less inhibited filmic music score, can possibly match it.
If you have (like me), been following Big Bud albums since his beginnings on the 'Good Looking' Label, you'll notice that each album has slowly begun to move away from the smooth and nocturnal breaks of intelligent Drum 'n' Bass. Sure there are tracks that are arguably just as brilliantly conceived, as anything he's done before...(especially the instrumental tracks), but it's becoming increasingly obvious, that Big Bud, wants to cover a whole range of styles with his music, (with Drum Breaks as a template, for various ideas), and if your expecting an album of the mellow & hypnotic work that he became known for, than I suggest making sure you have both, "Producer 07" & "Infinity + Infinity". But I'd find it hard to believe that anyone picking up this album, (provided they're aware of what to expect), being hugely disappointed with this album. Each disk is utterly sublime, and if each disk was released separately, would be worth the price of admission alone. This has been an exceptional run of albums for Big Bud, and although my personal fave is still "Producer 07", this is without doubt a 5 star album, that confirms that leaving the 'Good Looking' label, was possibly the best decision that Big Bud has made. Exceptional stuff!!!
Solid effort .......2005-06-13
I'm a big fan of Bukem and GLR. I recently heard the track catch 22 on on the local college station. I bought the album right away and couldn't be happier. I've always liked the Big Bud tracks on the Earth Series. This CD should stay in my player for quite some time. If you enjoy Downtempo organic beats and DNB this is a must have.
Excellent!.......2005-06-03
Wasn't disappointed at all. Thought BB's sound was going to change after leaving GLO but actually change is a good thing. Disc 2 is my favorite. I think I played track no. 7 for over 4 hours and I was not tired of it at all. It is one of those cds' that makes you want to sit in a quite spot and drift into a soothing atmosphere. This guy is a genius. It is a must buy! Thanks Big Bud!

M.o.d.......2007-01-24
Heh I got this primarily for the nostalgia, M.o.d is a unique band, not realy metal, but not realy rap, they play in the gray area. & the CD was in excellent condition as was its case when I recieved this, so this company & this product gets a 5 from me.
Not The Old MOD but..........2005-11-07
it's still great.Although Billy is rapping a bit in this he does it well. The riffs are as heavy as ever they're still pretty fast.If you like MOD and aren't a narrow minded punk then you'll enjoy this.
Unaceptable.......2003-09-24
The song "Intruder" was one of the singles of this album, and it was played on Headbangers ball back in the day. I really liked Intruder, it was in your face hardcore, and Billy Milano's voice sounds strong and agressive, so i went out and bought the album....I felt really let down by all the other tracks except Intruder, and certainly didint sound like the first M.O.D. albums that are much better than this one. If you wanna get anything with Billy in it, get S.O.D or the first 2 M.O.D albums.
Rhythm of Fear.......2003-07-12
Rhythm of Fear fails to deliver. It's mostly unentertaining and boring. My favorite songs were: Dead End, Rally(NYC), Get Up And Dance, and Step By Step is alright. The problem is 2/3 of the best songs are already on M.O.D.'s Loved By Thousands...Hated By Millions plus even better tracks.
M.O.D does hardcore.......2001-07-04
After the mediocre Gross Misconduct and the stupid Surfin' M.O.D. albums, I was wondering if they would come back, or call it quits and just stick with S.O.D. Well they came back, and very strong. This album showcases Billy Milano getting back to his hardcore roots. Songs like "Dead End," "Step By Step" and "I, the Earth" are all great hardcore songs. And "Rally (NYC) is a song about the intense NY hardcore scene.
Production on this album is a little raw, but it suits the music well. And just like all the other M.O.D. albums, the line-up is different. Billy is now handling all the Bass responsibilities, Dave Chavarri is on drums, and Tim McMurtrie (U.S.A. For M.O.D.) is back on guitar. This proves to be a great line-up, as they are all talented musicians, but more importantly, write very catchy songs.
Oh yeah, they do experiment a bit with rap core here. "Rhymestein" and "Jive Time Jimmy's Revenge" are both crossover songs. Thing is they are both good. Billy has figured out how to blend rap and hardcore without sounding like a rap band. Don't listen to the racist rantings of vlad. This is a good effort by M.O.D. Give it a listen, and see for yourself.

Ride & Shake
Case Of The Ex
Free
Best Of Me
How You Gonna Tell Me?
even the intro and outro are good....
I just love the cd...surprisingly enough, I think my sister loves this album more than me because she's always trying to take it.
3.5 stars - average.......2006-11-10
