5 out of 5 stars Fats Domino, the greatest.......2006-10-21

Back when I was a young teen, Fats was the reigning King. I have all his songs and have seen him in person many times. His piano playing and his laid back, simple approach to his music are dear to me. I still sing his songs because they are deep seated in my psyche from years of listening. Things were simple then and things in my life were good. Still are, and I still bring out his music to make me happy and take me back to a wonderful time! Thanks Fats!

5 out of 5 stars Great disc for the Buck Owens fan .......2007-01-05

Although it took quite awhile to get here, this imported cd is a great and comprehensive cd for the Buck Owens fan. It has forty hits and is a varied sampling of Buck Owen's legacy as a country star. The great thing about this record is that is chronicles the past and present, having hits like "Streets of Bakersfield" on one of the discs. Another aspect of this cd is its great quality; the sound is exemplary.

The influence Owens had as a country artist is really illustrated in this cd, as there are many songs in here that you have probably heard in shows, movies, or remakes, namely "Act Naturally", "Johnny B. Goode", and "Under My Spell." One of my favorite songs is "Sam's Place." This is a fantastic CD to add to your collection, especially if you are a country music fan!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great Package, Kiss at Height of Success.......2007-05-31

There are mixed feelings on this album for me. First off, the packaging is so cool, if you were lucky enough to get the LP from the 70's it came with cool inserts like a platinum award. The cover is awesome. I actually like the remixes and freshening up of the songs, my only problem is the songlist. It weighs so heavily on the earlier albums. I feel that it should spread the wealth more across all their releases up to this point. "Shock Me" and "Rocket Ride" should be on there as should "Christine Sixteen" and "King of the Night Time World". Having said that, it's still a great compilation and it will always be popular because it's famous for being the first KISS greatest hits package 1974-1978.

4 out of 5 stars A Definite Starting Point.......2006-09-22

This album serves as an excellent starying point for those new to the band KISS. It is an album, a collection of remixes like their greatest hits of their prime in the 70s. What often got neglected with KISS between their makeup and stage shows was that they made excellent dark metal music especially during their 1970s prime. The only 70s album by KISS not represented here is Dynasty, only because this remix collection was put together one year before the Dyanbasty album. If you're new to KISS I would recommended getting this album and then Dynasty, plus Creatures of the Night and Revenge to repessent their best musical tracks over the course of 3 decades. Every real KISS admirer knows most of their 80s albums are horrible except for Creatures of the Night and maybe Unmasked. My only complaint is the CD here always scratches and skips with continuous use over the course of several years. I went ahead and recently got the cassette tape 2 tape set of this album to compare and sure enough they scammed the pulic. Compact discs, while all the rage in the 90s had better sound over tapes supposedly but the discs were a lot cheaper to make and mass produce, resulting in cheaply made albums that would scratch all the time and therefore skip and not be able to play all the time like tapes. The main thing with tapes is the machine eats the tape but can be carefully rewound like new again. Tapes have a lot clearer sound, able to pit out the vocals and lyrics clearly and also you can hear the bass a lot better. For those who already have the albums represented on this compilation getting this would be pointless unless you want to hear slightly different versions of the songs remixed. For example, the intro to Strutter '78 features a drum sound heard on Alive and played live that was not on the debut KISS album. Hard Luck Woman starts out a lot slower the first verse of the song than the faster version as appeared on Rock and Roll Over. Black Diamond and She also have opening guitar lines that didn't appear on the original studio album. for nostalgia purposes, this was the last KISS album to be fully recorded with all four original members in the studio. Peter Criss only drums on a few songs off of Dyanasty and is pictured on Unmasked but Anton Figg actually did most of the session drumming during Peter Criss' absence on those tracks.

5 out of 5 stars New KISS fan? Buy this album first!!.......2005-12-09

If your deciding to go down the KISS road this album is a great place to start. This album is a remixed greatest hits album. Starts off with the remake of Strutter. Great remake. I love the new (at the time) mixes of Hard Luck Woman and Calling Dr. Love. The begining of Dr. Love is Gene all the way. Other songs remixed are Firehouse, Detroit Rock City and Black Diamond. I love the acoustic intro to Black Diamond. It's sweet.
This album is the best KISS made in their first 4 years. She is thier best song on this album. Aged well too.
Only thing missing is an Ace song and that would be Shock Me. Overall this is the perfect album for the new KISS fan. So stop readin' and start rockin'!

3 out of 5 stars Captures The Band At There Peak.......2005-11-13

This collection must have seemed like an odd release at the time, but the band's timing couldn't have been better.

This disc covers the band's output from 1974 though 1977, or roughly from the self-titled debut through Love Gun. Indeed, this was released when the band was at the height of its popularity, so it may have seemed premature back in 1978, but the timing couldn't have been better.

Why? This thing captures the sound of the band at its peak. In 1978, the band released all those solo albums, and that whole project turned out to be a disaster.

Three pretty bad albums followed the solo discs (Dynasty, Music from the Elder and Unmasked), and that hurt the band's popularity even more.

And, of course, KISS lost drummer Peter Criss and lead guitarist Ace Frehley when the group's popularity started to wane, and that just made matters worse.

So, Double Platinum comes across as a listing of the best tracks from the band's "makeup years." The 20 tracks on here reveal one thing clearly -- KISS was a hard rock band that could write some catchy guitar hooks that grabbed the listener instantly.

Whether one loves or hates KISS, it's hard to deny the band knew how to pump out tons of songs that people wanted to hear. Sure, all the theatrics were overblown and the band sang about a lot of sleazy stuff (you'd think the boys in KISS had sex every waking hour if you took their lyrics too seriously), but KISS built a sound that was hard to hate.

Naturally, all of the elements that made KISS a huge act are on this disc. This is all mid-tempo, grinding, guitar-based rock with hedonistic lyrics and plenty of swagger.

The whole 1970s notion of "it's okay if it feels all right" is captured perfectly on this album full of songs about chasing women, partying and raising hell. While those themes seem a bit worn out by now, they seemed fresh enough at the time, and the songs here made the band famous.

Now, there are some drawbacks to the album. First of all, the band redid "Strutter," which was on the band's debut. There's absolutely no reason in the world to have "Strutter '78" when the original would have been just fine.

Second, the big breakout hit for KISS was the version of "Rock and Roll all Nite" from Kiss Alive! Rather than use that version here, though, we've got a copy of the studio track from Dressed to Kill.

While that's a fine version, why not use the one that got the most play on the radio? That doesn't make sense to me.
Third, there are some "radio edits" here.

That is to say, some songs were scaled down a bit and given some extra effects for the radio. That's particularly noticeable on "Calling Dr. Love," which has some weird, backward guitar effects tossed in and a clumsy edit near the end of the song that was done to make it shorter.

"Detroit Rock City" lacks the bit at the front that establishes the track as one about a doomed fellow going to a rock show (anyone with a copy of Destroyer knows what I'm talking about here -- all the sound effects and dialogue from a "newscast" about the car crash are gone).

Finally, Love Gun is considered by many to be the best album from the band. Only the title track is on this collection, and that's a shame. Where's "Shock Me" and "Christine Sixteen?" Those two tracks are some of the best known from KISS, and it seems that at least one of them should have been included.

Having said that, this disc will give someone a good overview of the band when it was at the top of its game. Here are the songs on the disc:

1. Strutter '78
2. Do You Love Me
3. Hard Luck Woman
4. Calling Dr. Love
5. Let Me Go, Rock 'N Roll
6. Love Gun
7. God Of Thunder

17. Makin' Love
18. C'Mon And Love Me
19. Cold Gin
20. Black Diamond

3 out of 5 stars Great compilation but i dont like remixes........2005-08-15

This is the very first best of compilation from Kiss.
And i must say its probably my least played album. While the song tracks are great i just dont like remixes i prefur the originals.
Why would you want a better version of "Strutter" when the first one was so good.
I have never played any of Kiss's compilations much.Id rather play the Alive cd's.And when i hear alternate versions it just annoys me.
Now before i upset some die hard fans, dont be mistaken,im a Kiss crazy, and i love all the songs here. Its just that once you have the songs why do you need them in a compilation? And kiss have released so many these days ive lost track.
But if you dont have the earlier albums you wont be disappointed with the songs here.

    Album Description

The origin of the word "pioneer" derives from the Frech word pion or "foot soldier," a soldier whose task it was to prepare the way for the main body of troops marching into a new area. In the most literal sense of the word Robert Davis Jr. a.k.a. "DJ Screw" was a true hip hop pioneer. Davis was and is the grand master of "Screwed & Chopped" music, a technique of slowing the pace of music to almost an obscure drag personifying the underground lifestyle of the Houston streets that made him famous. With a small army of MCs known as the Screwed Up Click or S.U.C., Screw began a mix-tape movement that would one day take the music industry by storm.

Unfortunately, DJ Screw would not live to see his army which once only enjoyed celebrity status in Houston's underground and hailed as "platinum in the streets" now reaping the benefits of global sales becoming "platinum in the charts." DJ Screw has left legacy from what was once a cult following to the mainstream embrace of his sound that has launched several careers and arguably one of the biggest movements in hip hop.

DJ Screw: Untold Story tells the story of Robert Davis before the phenomenon and before the fame from the people who were there. This DVD also contains never-before seen footage of the one man who gave Houston its sound indentity, at work and at play as well as interviews with the original members of the S.U.C., Davis' family members and others whose careers are influenced by his music.

DINE BY CANDLELIGHT is an assortment of eleven musical hors d'oeuvres, designed to not only aid gustation but to lend the dinnertable a pleasant background. The performances are competent (if uncredited), and the selections imaginatively varied. Sound quality very good. No liner notes.

1 out of 5 stars Birdies go away!.......2003-11-11

The classical music on this cd is very nice, slow, relaxing, almost guarenteed to put you to sleep. But there are these little birdies that insist on chirping along with the music - and they aren't keeping time very well. This would have been a slightly mind-numbing cd without the birds. As it is, it's relaxing music that will annoy you. Can you do both of those at once?

        Album Description

"Coffee, Chocolate & Men", the latest album by Platinum Plus Universal recording artist Jen Rathbun features 11 new original compositions. Jen offers works that have been compared to Rosemary Clooney and Billie Holiday, and that contain a unique blend of humor, sultriness, and double-entendre. "Coffee, Chocolate & Men" was co-produced Robert Metzgar, a three-time winner of Cashbox's Producer of the Year, and Tony Migliore, another award winning producer. Migliore and Metzgar filled the studio with top Nashville talent, including a contingent of the Nashville Symphony, to play on the predominantly jazz-flavored album.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliantly produced tawdry jazz album.......2005-01-13

It's no wonder that Jen Rathbun has been nominated the Female Vocalist of the Year in the State of Texas for the Texas Music Awards. The houston jazz star has the greatest jazz album ever and Billboard's review "brilliantly produced tawdry jazz album" is exactly right. This album is worth whatever you have to pay for it. It's absolutely sensational.

5 out of 5 stars Hot and Rich.......2004-12-18

I've been following Jen Rathbun for a couple years now. In her new CD, "Coffee, Chocolate & Men", she brings her music to a whole new level. Her first CD, "Beautiful Day", was a sampler of her wide ranging writing styles. Chocolate is focused, delivering a rich dose of her smoky-room cabaret style. These are fun songs, hangin-with-the-girls songs, songs that make you raise your eyebrows and grin knowingly. From the dusky ballads, "Seven Digits Away", and "I'm So Lonely", to the bawdy "Yard Man" (makes me blush), to the right-on "Monday Blues"...she reveals too-true moments, and gives us singable melodies with unforgettable lyrics. My favorite cut is "Cool Cat", full of crooning innocence and inuendo. Her voice is warm and dense, thick as buttered rum, and the backing jazzy instrumentals are crisp and bright. This lively CD would be perfect music for a 30th birthday bash, a bachelorette party, or a let-your-hair-down dinner with friends after a long week. Honey, it's a hottie!
