4 out of 5 stars 4.5 the best.......2007-05-07

This is VoiVods 'white album'. Excellent raw energy on this follow up to "Killing Technology". Best songs: "Macro Solutions.." , "Brainscan", "Tribal Convictions" and "Cosmic Drama".
They were never able to recapture this cds off the wall riffs and out-of-this-world vibe that they established here. After this they went to the decent but over-polished "Nothingface"..

Years ago I had a friend that told me while he was in my car I could play any music I wanted except for Voivod. This included Slayer, Exodus, Death Angel and various other bands which many would consider loud and obnoxious. Voivod is defiantly not for everyone. That being said Nothingface is one of my favorite CDs. You have to approach it with an open mind however. You aren't going to get a single catchy riff or even a single tempo that flows throughout each song. In the world of Voivod things change fast and very often quite unexpectedly. As a matter of fact this was my friend's complaint. He would find a grove he liked only to have it knocked out from under him. He just couldn't take it. Also the music is chuck full of dissonance. And I'm not talking about a chord here and there. It literally permeates most of the music. The vocals have a sort of punk quality to them so if you are expecting operatic or cookie monster vocals look elsewhere. The lyrics lean heavily towards freakishly bizarre science fiction which given the music fits exceptionally well. In fact I whenever I listen to Nothingface or Dimension Hatros my reaction at the end is something like "WOW I survived!". So if you want to hear something unique than go for it, but don't expect your standard metal band cuz these guys are anything but standard. PS: Piggy RIP....

5 out of 5 stars Just another part of the evolution process!.......2006-01-28

Voivod learned how to write songs as they realeased each album. If you listen to the albums in order of their release "Dimension Hatross was their best (most progressive) and crisp production. I first heard them on the album that came before(Killing Technology)I had never heard guitar chords like that. I had a friend of mine put it in my cars cassette player. I felt like I was on another planet. But Dimension was the first one I bought. I got it when it was first released. And it still is my favorite Voivod album. If I had heard Nothinface first I probably would have said it was my favorite. Three mandatory albums are these three. This Cd has a version of the Batman theme that was not on the cassette. While everyone was playing power chords Voivod were doing something different. And they stayed true. Either you Love them or not. They are one of my favorites since I first got into Rush. When you get sick of the same old same old listen to this album. BUY IT! I promise you that there isn't anything else like it.True Techno Metal!!!

5 out of 5 stars PINNACLE OF VOIVOD MATERIAL-ESSENTIAL.......2006-01-07

In my opinion, this is the best Voivod album of them all. While it is not a suggested starting point, it is definitely a compilation of all the elements that make this band up. Ridiculously creative, and stunningly avant garde, Voivod did things in their heyday that no other bands would dare think of or let alone replicate. Every song on this album is superb Batman included, the coolest thing about the majority of these songs is that half of them build up, and then open up into a thrashing finish that replicates thier style on previous albums. War and Pain and Roar are super albums, but were sort of going along with the pack of other thrash bands of their day, but on Killing Technology, Voivod begin to morph into what Dimension Hatross would bring to full fruition. It seems contradictory to mention the genre of thrash and the word progressive in the same sentence, but that is what makes Voivod so great. No offense, but at the time of this album, the premier thrash bands were the big four and second tier bands like Kreator, Exodus, and Sodom. I love material by all those bands but none of it is as conceptually groundbreaking as Voivod. Furthermore, the albums that follow this, are awesome as well. Take them for what they are as they begin to soften up into rock territory. Voivod successfully create superb rock albums and don't sell out in the meantime. Another great thing about the band is the artwork. Away's signature style is super and the Korgull Skull is a great logo for a t shirt. FYI, Away did a rendition of rap group Non Phixion's logo, and cover art for some of the albums as well. Also, Non Phixion pay tribute and mention Voivod material in many of thier group and solo (Ill Bill) albums. There is a video for Tribal Convictions from Dimension Hatross which is kick @ss in the old school video sense. Just the band playing and some cheesy effects, but done right nonetheless. I won't get specific, but the songs on this album are Voivod at their most futuristic and possibly most progressive and none fail to disappoint. Dimension Hatross establishes Voivod as true artists. Rather than exploring hackneyed material rehashed by other bands of their time, Voivod seriously approach the 1 dimensional conception of thrash and change (if not expand) the genre. On a final note, Piggy, thier guitarist recently died of colon cancer, Piggy played some of the craziest chords of his time. The innovation he expressed in his music makes him, in my opinion, one of the most original musicians of his time. While Voivod were not interested in breaking any ground at the time of their last released album, it was good to see the band reunited and going strong. It's crazy how this band had such a down low influence, I wear my shirt, and almost always, 35+ year old metalheads want to talk about what a great band Voivod was. I guess, for those who know, I need not extrapolate about what a dope band this was.

I tried to play the samples, but the codec the Real Media format uses is outdated. Please update the codec you use to encode the music.

My system uses ReaLMedia 10 for Linux.
