80's Heavy Metal - nothing less.......2005-07-24
Concrete Killers starts off at a fast pace with American Dream. Dual solos, great vocal harmonies, a heavy rhythm section, and the balls-out vocals of Vic Hix saturate this and the entire album. Immediately following is track two: Heat and the Fire (my opinion-the best song on the album). The chorus sticks in my head for days at a time. I cannot think of a heavy metal song with better vocal harmonies. By the way, SP is not speed/thrash(Overkill, Megadeth), dark metal (Saint Vitus, Danzig) or hard rock (Crue, Skid Row). They are Heavy Metal-similair to Grim Reaper, Seduce, and Amored Saint. Their lyrics are empowering and capture a 'man against the world' theme as introduced in their prior album, Steel and Starlight. Back to the individual songs: In the Dark and Memories creep along with edge at a heavy pace - a bit slower than the rest of the record. Windows is the b-side gem. This takes the listener through the onset of a long, lonely winter. Hix's vocal ability is showcased in the stop/scream chorus of this powerful ballad. The album is rounded off at the same speed it begins. The title track winds you up, gets you ready to flip the cassette, and do it all over again. Though released in 1989, the overall production sounds 1985 and I love it for that very reason. There is no woofer banging bass as you find on Metallica's Justice for All album. So, why all this great talk and only 4 stars? Three words: Steel and Starlight. The SP album prior to this IS a 5 star accomplishment. There are thousands of metal albums out there and Steel and Starlight is one of the few that has no filler nor reason to fast forward. Concrete Killers is an excellent follow-up. Buy them both.
