Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Two tracks I really like.......2007-07-21

The Mission Impossible theme is performed well.
The Fireball theme is actually much improved on this version. I prefer the orchestra and the vocals over the original.

2 out of 5 stars Quantity Over Quality.......2007-01-15

As a musician myself, I know too well that one of the most important ingredients in ANY performance (live or recorded) is passion. The recordings here generally lack the same passion and sheer drama of the originals. Much of the instrumentation has been reduced to a cheezy, thin, plastic synthesized replica. The performances are simply a watered-down lackluster version of the classic originals. If it were not for the sheer volume of tracks compiled here, I would have rated the comp only "one star".

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre.......2006-05-17

The sound quality for this collection isn't much better than the samples offered by Amazon.

4 out of 5 stars One Hundred Greatest TV Themes.......2005-08-06

I have watched almost all the shows that are on these 4 cd's. Many were made before I started watching TV. Most I've seen once or twice before.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty close to original recordings.......2005-07-24

Definitely not as good as the originals. You'll probably notice the slight differences since it's stuff you saw and listened to every week or everyday in reruns growing up, but it's still an amazing collection.

4 out of 5 stars A very well kept secret.......2005-09-09

I originally owned Garland Jeffrey's 'Ghost Writer', which forms a significant part of this anthology on vinyl and it was rarely off my turntable. 28 years later it sounds as fresh as the first time I heard it. The mystery to me is how Garland Jeffreys never got the recognition he deserves for these sharp, witty, beautifully crafted songs with their sharp NY streetwise lyrics, reggae influence, great arrangements with contributions from Michael Brecker and Steve Gadd to name but two of the sidemen on this long-overdue retrospective. Well done to Raven Records for re-releasing this gem. Now do the right thing and give Garland Jeffreys the recogintion her deserves.

2 out of 5 stars The Wrong Version of "Christine".......2004-04-09

I'm surprised the other reviewers didn't mention it... but this Aussie compilation has a different, slow version of "Christine" -- not the upbeat gem that appeared on the American version of Escape Artist. Since the fast version of "Christine" is one of my favorite Garland Jeffreys songs, I was very disappointed with this collection. I'll buy Escape Artist on CD and listen to my vinyl until they release a U.S. "best of" collection.

4 out of 5 stars Why leave out "Spanish Town" & "Why O"??.......2004-03-29

Great choice of tracks but why did they leave out Spanish Town & Why O, from Ghostwriter? Spanish Town has got to be one of the best tracks that he's put down and any collection is incomplete without it! For that reason, this only gets 4 stars.

5 out of 5 stars ** Great Intro to a Seriously Talented Rocker **.......2003-09-19

For any fans of singer-songwriters like Springsteen, Elvis Costello, Graham Parker, James Taylor, John Hiatt, or Warren Zevon, you will find Garland Jeffreys to be a serious treat.

This talented artist deserves attention for those who appreciate well-crafted songs and a great voice. Starting with his 1970's album with Grinder's Switch, you may think you're listening to The Band with a young Mick Jagger on vocals. By the late 1970's Jeffreys moved firmly into the mainstream rock arena with the superb Ghostwriter album, of which this CD has a few tracks. By the 1980's, bits of reggae filtered into his sound, most evident on his 1981 Escape Artist (of which this CD has 4 songs, but buy the whole album on Amazon for only $6.98!). The Best Of CD has a few good tracks from 1982's Guts for Love, which includes one of my favorite rock tunes, Real Man, with GE Smith on guitar.

Jeffreys was always supported by excellent backup singers and musicians, so check out the liner notes. After a personal hiatus for nearly ten years, he is currently touring again, cut a single for the new Bruce Springsteen tribute album (an incedible version of "Streets of Philadelphia"), and may make his own new album. You won't go wrong with any of his available CDs, particularly his early 90's "Don't Call Me Buckwheat", which is not on this 1977-83 Best Of CD.

But buy this album for an introduction to the talented Jeffreys -you won't be disappointed, and you'll discover one of rock's true gems. ...

4 out of 5 stars Great To See This Music Available On CD, But...........2002-11-23

Very little of Garland Jeffreys output from the 70s & 80s has been issued on CD, so it's great to see that Raven has seen fit to release this compilation. The following original albums are represented: "Ghost Writer" ('77), "One-Eyed Jack" ('78), "American Boy and Girl" ('79), "Escape Artist" ('81), and "Guts For Love" ('82). There is nothing from Garland's 1972 eponymous debut album. There are 8 tracks from "Ghost Writer", 4 from "Escape Artist", and the others get 2 or 3 each. While I'm pleased with the existence of this collection, I must quibble with some of the song choices. Several essential, and obvious, selections are absent: "Spanish Town" from "Ghost Writer", "City Kids" from "American Boy And Girl", and "Mystery Kids" from "Escape Artist" are only the most glaring examples. There was an earlier collection, "Matador And More", issued on CD in 1992, which was limited to only 12 tracks and only covered the 1977-1979 timeframe, but it did a much better job of picking the highlights from that period. This newer compilation is more generous with 20 songs, including material from the two later albums ('81-'82) that are not represented on the 1992 collection, so overall it's the best that anyone has done yet at providing Garland Jeffrey's fans with his early music on CD, but in light of the omissions, I'm still glad I have the original albums on vinyl. For anyone not particularly familiar with Garland's music, his biggest hit, "Wild In The Streets", is included here, as are many other choice cuts including "Cool Down Boy", "New York Skyline", "Matador", "Christine", and his great cover of "96 Tears". His music in general is literate, groundbreaking, streetwise, passionate, soulful rock 'n' roll, and he threw healthy doses of reggae and other world beat influences into the mix back before it had become fashionable to do so. Four stars due to the song selection, but Garland is certainly worthy of the five-star collection that nobody has yet managed to assemble.

5 out of 5 stars Wild In the Streets!.......2007-05-16

Ok first of all, i am 14 and a half, I just didn't feel like opening an account. I'll just cut to the chase. If there was a 4 1/2 star rating i would click that, but since 5 is the closest, i'll pick that. How i found out about the circle jerks is because I own thaw (Tony Hawks' American Wasteland) I liked the track Wild in the Streets because it is a good punk song. And there's a bunch of other good punk songs on it like Stars and Stripes, and Question Authority. So if you want to listen to any Circle Jerks albums, listen to this one.

5 out of 5 stars classic punk.......2007-01-20

the second album by this band, awesome a true true classic,
timeless, worked twenty years ago, still applies today !

5 out of 5 stars Timeless in it's absence of punk rock cliches..........2005-10-06

This album is timeless and classic in it's portrayal of human anxieties. Many people are judging this by today's standards on what passes as punk, but for what it was it's a great album. The sad thing about punk these days is that it has too many standards to conform to. Punk rock was representative of a then counterculture, but as a lot of things do, it melded with pop culture. Now I think that people have forgotten what punk was about. This record is pure, passionate, and fun at the same time. Keith Morris's knack for sarchasm is fully intact, on what I see as an honest view of our society's decreasing compassion towards humanity. The music does it's job by conveying the same anxious emotions in an original way. It sounds like the Circle Jerks, nothing else and nothing less.

5 out of 5 stars Not a Sophmore Effort.......2005-09-10

More than one person referred to this as a second outing for the band, did everybody miss wild in the streets and golden shower of hits?

This is a 1985 record that came at a time when like one reviewer said it was time to continue growing.

This is a good record, not great but there is some really funny stuff on here.

5 out of 5 stars BEST AMERICAN HC. !!!!.......2005-03-30

I cannot believe there are so many people who are dissapointed with the bands sophomore effort, which I find as good as their first and even 3rd record !!!!Along with Black Flag and The Germs, these guys helped write the rules for the style and for generations to come.Loud, angry 1 min. blazes of undiluted raw aggression, with a nice sound to boot !!! Only complaint is that this used to come on a two-lps-on-one-cd with Group Sex on Frontier, but then there were a number of defective cds which did'nt really include both lp's,contrary to what the box stated,so I chose to buy both vinyl reissues separately.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Helix - 'Wild In The Streets' (EMI) 4 1/2 stars.......2006-05-17

Originally released in 1987,as 'Wild...' was Helix's seventh record. One of the few Canadian bands I'd fully support anymore.I know, for a fact they still exist.Just all around good old school heavy rock(call it metal if you like). Most impressive tracks are the title cut "Wild In The Streets",their anthem(?)"Never Gonna Stop The Rock",their Nazareth cover, ballad "Dream On","Give 'Em Hell","High Voltage Kicks" and "Love Hungry Eyes".Would likely appeal to fans of AC/DC,The Cult,Kick Axe,Killer Dwarfs and Twisted Sister.Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Helix at their best!!!.......2004-09-27

This is the pinnacle of Helix's power. The album smokes from beginning to end! Even the ballad, Dream on rocks. I think what makes this record stand apart from their earlier gems is the production values. Mike Stone really did a good job here. Brian Vollmar sounds as ferocious as ever and songs sound clearer and crisper. Highlights include title track, Wild in the streets, shot full of love, High voltage kicks, She's too tough(covered by Def Leppard later), Kiss it goodbye(your ass) and my personal fav, love hungry eyes! 1987 was a good year for me overall and this record certainly helped. Buy this if you like good, solid in your face 80's metal. Also, these guys were talented musicians who could really play. I kinda lost track of them after this and Paul Hackman's death. Get it and you'll like it!!Cheers....

I remember listening to this on casette back in 1987 and having to end up buying it on cd as I basically destroyed the casette by listening to it too much. The opening track of WILD IN THE STREETS to the end track of KISS IT GOODBYE are great tracks. A song off of the album WHAT YA BRINGIN' TO THE PARTY is such a great track. SHE'S TO TOUGH IS A GREAT SONG which I honestly prefer over the DEF LEPPARD version. I thing that DREAM ON is a great ballad track for the album. This cd is all in all a great ROCK/HEAVY METAL album. A fan of HELIX must possess this cd.

5 out of 5 stars Cricle Jerks follow-up to Group Sex........2005-06-23

Wild in the Streets was a follow up disc to the highly influential Group Sex. The songs are a bit longer and are a little more in depth but they still hit hard. Most bands when they release a follow-up it's either a.) a repeat or b.) something completly different an an utter failure. This one falls more towards a.) but more complex, well thought out and produced. Wild in the Streets end with a fitting track (a cover of Put a Little Love in your Heart). CD comes with a booklet filled with lyrics and photos. Some releases have Group Sex and Wild in the Streets crammed on one disc.

      Highly recommmended.

      5 out of 5 stars wild excellence.......2001-08-12

talk about great music! every song is intense and fast paced. great LP.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2000-03-02

If you want to know where all of these so- called punks like Blink 182, Green Day, and the Offspring came from, get this cd and Damaged by Black Flag.

5 out of 5 stars One of the BEST punk albums of all time.......1999-08-05

I have listened to quite a bit of old school punk rock, and I must say this album is one of the best. The lyrics are funny and meaningful, the tempo is always fast-as-hell, and the songs are short and to the point. along with complete discography by Minor Threat, damaged by Black Flag and Bad Brains this is a must buy.
