Album Description
This 28-track collection highlights the astounding career as director and producer of Steven Spielberg, whose films are inexorably linked with the symphonic beauty of John Williams' scores. With five Oscar(r) wins and 41 nominations, Williams is a master of his art. The set also features other Spielberg collaborations including Quincy Jones, Jerry Goldsmith, and Billy Goldenberg. From "Duel" (a premiere recording) to "The Terminal," this release is a journey through movie magic.
Customer Reviews:
mediocre mess, nonetheless worth having for some.......2005-07-07
If you've never purchased one of these Silva Screen best-of score CDs, let me first say this: unless you're a true film-score nut (like me), don't do it. Just don't. They really aren't terribly good. This one, like most, is played by The city of Prague Philharmonic, and it's not a terribly talented orchestra. They play very flatly, they miss notes, their orchestrator makes odd changes to composers' music. The end result of all this is that if you're familiar with the film versions of the pieces of music they're playing, it can be, frankly, a bit difficult to listen to.
That said, there is one decent -- decent, mind you -- reason to buy this CD. That's for the five-minute track of music from Spielberg's "Duel." It isn't great music, by any means, but if you're a Spielberg fanatic, this is the only release there has ever been (to my knowledge, at least) of music from that movie.
To be fair, not all of the tracks here are poorly done. "Hymn to the Fallen" comes off fairly well, and so does the music from "A.I." and "The Terminal" -- and the "Minority Report" theme is actually quite good. But much of the rest just doesn't sound right, so if you're looking for a quick way to assemble a quality overview of Spielberg music, this isn't the way to go.
That brings me to my final complaint, which is that "The Lost World" is omitted entirely! There were several good themes done for that movie; it was no mere rehash of "Jurassic Park."
For the seriously devoted only.

This is one not to be missed...so many highlights and stand outs...from one spectrum of comedy, romance, drama, suspense, action, adventure...to the other of horror, war, thrillers and classics that linger from decade to decade...many have sold millions in Soundtracks, but here in this collection they all appear compliments of conductors Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens and Nic Raines...conducting The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus...though different arrangements in some cases, still a very good representation in tribute of this legendary director and icon.

BROADWAY: The formative years.......2004-09-30
An essential collection for libraries and archives. Many of these shows have never been recorded in any other format but these light opera company medleys of "vocal gems." These antique 78-RPM discs are the predecessors of today's original cast recordings.
The years covered in this set show how European style operettas wer slowly giving way to a more jazz-oriented American musical comedy style. Victor Herbert, Jerome Kern, and Sigmund Romberg (among others) were setting the stage for the modern American musical.
Listeners should be aware that all the recordings in this set date from the "acoustic" period of recording and have limited range. The metal horns that collected the sound and cut it into wax discs were not ideal for soloists and worked best with brass and percussion. The shellac surfaces of the pressed records had a hissing sound and the steel needles often distorted the music. The few pressings that have survived in playable condition are gathered here, but be aware these are recordings nearly 100 years old!
Those I haven't daunted are in for a treat, for once you get past the antique sound you discover a wealth or musical material and a glimpse into a Broadway very different from what it would eventually become.

Album Description
The passage of time can do strange things to one's mind. Tonight I'm haunted by a memory from so long ago that it feels more like a dream that never actually happened.
"Jeffrey?" asked Linda sleepily one night while she was cradled in my arms.
"Mmm?" I replied.
"Do you believe in the concept of non-linear time?"
"Huh?"
"You know, the concept that time is actually a constant, as opposed to this linear thing?"
I sighed. It was pretty late and I wanted to sleep. In retrospect, I wish I had spent less of my time here sleeping and more time with the people in my life that I loved. Especially Linda Starling.
"Linda, I KNOW that it's 2:30 in the morning and that I have an early class tomorrow! Ow!"
Linda had elbowed me in the ribs. "Okay, baby, I give," I said. "I have no idea what you're talking about. Care to explain?"
The elbow to the ribs woke me up a little bit, so I started running my fingers through her hair as we spoke. In fact, if I concentrate enough I can see her as she was that night. Beautiful, lying next to me in just her panties, her short black hair in my right hand and her luscious breast in my left, as opposed to a tombstone by a barren tree.
"Non-linear time is the theory that states that time doesn't REALLY occur in a linear fashion, but instead is more of a constant. However, we as human beings can only perceive time in chronological order. Some scientists theorize that the reality of time is that the past, present, and future have already occurred," said Linda.
"So, you're saying the future has already happened?"
"...and the past is still happening! They believe that the past, present, and future are all happening concurrently," she concluded.
"Wait. Hold up. NOW you're saying that you DO believe in the concept of predetermined fate. Because if the future has already happened, then no matter what we choices we make in our lives, the end result will be the same."
We will die.
"Well, that would explain why some people experience psychic phenomena or have premonitions, wouldn't it?" continued Linda. "The only way that someone could see into the future would be if the future has already happened."
"Linda, I thought you believed that it's your OWN life that you create every day. To quote your latest poem, 'It's your own life you make, based on your choices and the risks you take.'"
"Well, that's still true! Just because the future has already happened doesn't mean that we know what the future will bring. Our future will always be based on our choices and the risks we take, since we can only perceive the future on a linear basis anyhow."
"Well, then here's the big question: What happens to us when we die, then? I'm assuming now that you're forsaking your belief in reincarnation?"
"If time is a constant, then I guess maybe you start over from being born again?" postulated Linda. "I don't know, I never really considered...."
"So if someone chose to live their life," I interrupted, "in a bad way, and they let themselves be miserable and acted unkindly towards their fellow man, they would be forced to relive their wretched existence for all eternity?"
"I guess? Wow, I guess you'd really better try to lead a good life, huh?"
"I dunno. Seems kind-of harsh to me. Millions have had bad lives through no fault of their own. Imagine having to spend all eternity being a starving child in Ethiopia? That would be terribly unfair."
"Yeah, that probably isn't the answer, then," said Linda as she became lost in thought for a moment. Then she exclaimed, "Starving children in Ethiopia?! What are you TALKING about? Jeffrey Petersen, why do you always have to talk about weird stuff at 3 in the morning?" said Linda as she looked up at me with her baby blue eyes. Her pupils dilated as she shot me her award-winning smile and my heart melted.
Then she took on a more serious look for a moment. "Well," she said softly. "There is...one t

Album Description
Composer Frank Lewin has incorporated folk songs and popular music from various ethnic traditions in his scores and films, television programs, and plays, as well as in his opera Burning Bright (Albany Records: TROY 469/71). Each tune was adapted to the expressive requirements of the particular subject. Occasionally original music was composed in a particular style, as "source music," i.e. music heard within the action of a scene. Two eminent performers of the recent past, both now deceased, open and close this collection: violist Walter Trampler and fiddler Johnny Cunningham. In between, artists of equal merit perform music from a variety of sources. Frank Lewin has written scores for films, television programs, plays, and historical outdoor dramas. Among his concert music are song cycles and choral works, including a requiem which was first performed in 1969, during a memorial service for Robert Kennedy in the chapel of Princeton University, and Music for the ! White House, for which he conducted members of the Westminster Choir and the United States Marine Band. The composer was a member of the faculty of the Yale School of Music from 1971 to 1992, teaching composition for film. During this period he also taught the course Music in Modern Media at Columbia University's School of the Arts.
