After several recordings of American popular music, Te Kanawa has become a very effective crooner, phrasing with heretofore missing panache. The easy, jazzy Riddle-like arrangements are bouncy and appealing. But after 15 selections, the mysterious dissatisfaction of eating Chinese food and feeling hungry an hour later remains. Tunick writes in his program notes that "the waltz ballads ... are poignant and moving, but never stray into sentimentality." But why not? A little mushiness would serve this recording well, and also contribute to a desperately lacking variety of interpretation. Still, the voice is consistently gorgeous; it would just be nice to distinguish the happy songs from the sad. --Barbara Eisner Bayer
Customer Reviews:
Irving Berlin at his best.......2007-06-26
Kiri's glorious voice interprets Irving Berlin masterpieces beautifully with expression and respect for these American favorites.
Get's my vote!.......2004-04-03
OK. Full disclosure: I'm one of those helpless souls who is just madly in love with the sounds that emanate from Dame Kiri Te Kanawa's vocal chords. I suppose there are many artists who can interpret Irving Berlin's songs with more, what's the word, authenticity?
And I've heard many of them, and I love their work.
But Kiri Te Kanawa is different. She was given one of the most beautiful instruments in the history of sound recordings. Thank God the recording companies figured out what they had and put her in front of a microphone early and often.
We have had a rare opportunity to experience a great artist from almost the start of her career clear through to what now must be it's final stages.
I, for one, feel privileged.
Thank you, Dame Kiri. The world is a little better place because of you.
Jazzy and Beautiful.......2002-09-01
This album exemplifies Kiri's amazing, vast dose of talent for musical interpretation. Though I tend to enjoy mostly classical music, this album has opened doors to a wonderful world of classical-jazz, which I find quite beautiful! Perhaps for some, it is an aquired taste...yet I was hooked the moment I heard track one...and have since become quite the "modern Kiri" fan!~Brava once again~
I love it!.......2002-05-14
If you like Irving Berlin and Kiri Te Kanawa you'll probably enjoy this album as much as I do!
I can imagine Nick and Nora Charles listening to this at one of Nick's favorite dives! It will transport you to a sophisticated time and place that may have never existed except in literature and debutante coming out parties.
Gatsby would have loved it, and surely would have invited Kiri to all his parties!
Simply Dreadful.......2001-01-17
Just terrible! Although her voice has mellowed and is quite beautiful, Ms Te Kanawa has absolutely no instinct or feel for this distinctly American music. She's just lost in her own peculiar Kiwi wonderland. She is not aided but what have to be some of the worst arrangements of this music ever recorded.
Her version of "What'll I do" alone earns her a place on the top ten list of abominable recordings of American music.

Philips' 100-volume Great Pianists of the 20th Century series is one of the most ambitious projects ever put together by a record company. For all the debate that will surely ensue over who was chosen and who was passed over, it's obvious that careful, loving attention has gone into the selection of content for the happy 72 to be admitted to this special pantheon (certain especially significant pianists are allotted two or even three volumes, such as Vladimir Horowitz). Each of the handsomely designed, sepia-tinted volumes--adorned with a black and white photo--contains two CDs and a thoughtful essay on the artist in question. Prospective buyers should be aware that this sampler volume offers only short vignettes (averaging between two and three minutes), along with a thumbnail sketch, for each pianist. Still, it's a smorgasbord of morsels that allow you to taste some of the major trends in philosophy and approach to the instrument throughout the century (and reaching well back into the 19th), and the overlap of repertory permits some fascinating quick comparisons as style and technique have evolved. Delve into some of the artists in the series--say Alfred Brendel or Martha Argerich--and trace in greater depth the piano's identity crisis. Is it, for example, a resonantly string-like instrument ideal for pastel shadings or a steely, percussive machine meant to express the hardness of the 20th century? There are countless discoveries to be made here, both for the connoisseur and for anyone taking the first step into getting acquainted with great keyboard artistry. --Thomas May
Customer Reviews:
Tantalizing preview of good things to come.......2003-01-07
This is an introductory 2-CD set to introduce a very grand series of CD's featuring the 20th Century's greatest pianists.
As a sampler, there are some incredible jewels here, for example Nikita Magaloff's sparkling Chopin Tarantelle and Paganini Etude No.3: 'La Campanella' played excitingly by John Ogdon. There is even an early recording of Paderewski playing (predictably) Paderewski.
This sampler seems a bit of a Euro-centric, but the editors wisely chose to include Earl Wild doing Gershwin and Roslyn Tureck doing Bach. I ended up purchasing the Andre Watts volume from this series, and wondered what it would be like to own the whole shootin' match. I saw the entire CD series on display in a top notch music store in Germany--it was overwhelming to see the line of brown covers stretching impressively across an entire wall. The sampler is a good way to have a taste of this ambitious series of the giants of piano in the 20th Century. I listen to it often with great enjoyment.
RE: Glenn Gould.......2001-05-23
RE: Those of you who complained/rejoiced about Gould's abscence: he is not on the sampler, true, I believe for... purposes or something along those lines. Rudolf Serkin is also not included, but both are among the "greatest pianists of the 20th Century" set.
Missing no one except Katia Skanavi.......2001-04-19
I was pleased after reading the list of performers to see that Gould's machine-gun jiffy-pop piano "playing" is not included. I would like to hear more of Skanavi tho.
Forget Somebody?.......2000-09-21
Although I understand that it must have been very diffiult to decide which pianists got put in the collection, let alone a two-disc sampler, I still feel that any anthology of the piano (other than one highlighting the romantic era)should contain at least one piece by Gould, yet this one doesn't. Gould has been almost unanimously hailed as one of the most influential artist of the twentieth century, yet he is not included on this disc. Other than that, a great buy.
Unparalled Excellence (Mark G. Davis).......1999-08-01
If you only purchase one classical piano cd in your entire life, this one should be it. All the masters, at their very best on it.
If you have piano cd's, this should be part of that collection. I purchased one, almost not believing what I read on the jacket. I'm telling my friends about this one, as I'm aware of no other CD having all those piano masters - - at any price?)...

"cuts you just like that" .......2005-07-14
Like W.A.S.P. and other ostentatious metal acts of the 1980s, Lizzy Borden did not get enough credit for their excellent musicianship and song-writing skills. Their outfits, tacky album names like Give `Em the Axe, and Love You to Pieces, and their over-the-top stage antics overshadowed the incredible music these guys produced. Love You to Pieces was released in 1985 and is a very solid album with some brilliant Iron Maiden-esque tracks.
The album opens with the fast and furious "Council of the Caldron." "Psychopath" rocks! It is also a dark and mysterious song with iniquitous whispers of "I want to play" and intense guitar riffs. The chorus kicks! "Save Me" is a more accessible track. It offers slow verses with a chorus that is, musically, very upbeat despite the lyrics "I'm dying here with you." On this track, the woman isn't the helpless victim like on most Lizzy songs but, through wrong choices, is bringing her man down (the lyrics do not get too involved in any story-telling). "Red Rum" seems to be about Jack the Ripper from the lyrics "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy," and "spirits ripping out my mind." I'm not sure to what the line "in two thirty seven" refers but 2:37 am is around the time that Mary Kelly (Jack the Ripper's last known and most cut-up victim) was killed. Maybe I'm seeing something that's not there, but the song rocks, especially during the chants of "Red Rum." "Love You to Pieces" is a slow, power ballad on the level of "Children of the Damned" by Iron Maiden. It is highlighted when Lizzy songs the verse "and all along you knew the reasons why I love you to pieces." The title of the track is only used once and just in that verse. I love that part.
"American Metal" is awesome! It has killer guitar riffs and ends with Lizzy's amazing high-pitched screams. The blood-pumping chants! The adrenaline rush! I can't get enough of this track! The next track is also incredible. "Flesheater" has this killer bass riff at the chorus that is so addictive, I think I played this track ten times in a row when I first heard it. It overpowers the shock value of the lyrics "She wants it deep, deep, deep, deep, deeper" and "I love to eat, eat, eat, eat, eat her." "Warfare" is a straight-forward metal track. "Godiva" is another blazing, blood-pumping track. "Rod of Iron" starts out like a slow power ballad broken up by Lizzy's lashing out vocals. Then it becomes a rocker. Appropriately, "Rod of Iron" reminds me the most of Iron Maiden, especially at the guitar solo.
Any fan of 1980s metal needs some Lizzy albums in their music library. Love You to Pieces is one of their best (their best being Visual Lies). I think, next to Lies, it is their most solid album, but I like most of their releases including Menace to Society released the following year and Master of Disguise in 1989 which, if it were not for one or two tracks I do not like, I would proclaim as their masterpiece.
Lungs of Iron.......2003-07-07
You will love most of these tracks if you like great heavy metal vocals.
Lizzy Borden is one of the greatest Rock Singers in the genre, yet is not heard by many.
LYtoP may be his strongest vocal performance. The title track, "love you to pieces" has out of sight vocals. "Rod of Iron", more of the same. This guy has Iron Lungs!
I would like to see this singer collaborate with some prog. rock musicians for some more heavy, art rock. A project with stronger compositions to let this guy feature full range and tricks.
Lizzy Borden does not sound like Bruce Dickinson, but I would love to hear Iron Maiden with this guys voice..
Amazing!!!.......2003-01-30
It's been days since i had my copy of "Love you to pieces" and i can't stop listening such savage tunes like "Psychopath", "Red Rum" or "Warfare"...
From all the 80's glam metal bands, this is one of the most agressive and heavy, not only in their shows and looks, but the most important:the music.probably that's why they didn't have the attention they deserved...specially from media.
I love all songs..maybe "American metal" is the one i like less, but it's still a great song , speacially live.
Before this album i had "Visual lies" and honestly didn't like very much except for "Me against the world";but this first album is much more agressive, with some of the most killer riffs i've ever heard and Lizzy's Amazing voice.
Buy it, steal it, sell your grandma in a pawn shop; if you're a W.A.S.P. or early Motley Crue's fan get your hands on this album!
Very underrated band.......2002-12-10
This is a great album of 80's metal. I don't think there is one bad song on it. All the songs are Lizzy Borden at it's best. The best songs are American Metal, Flesheater, and Rod Of Iron. The only downfall of this disc is the production isn't very good.(would like to see it remastered) If you're interested in 80's metal you can't go wrong with Lizzy Borden. They were (and are) far superior to other 80's bands.(Motley Crue, Ratt, etc.) Unfortunately, controversial lyrics and image kept them from getting the exposuer they deserved.
The version of this disc that I own contains four extra songs, Give Em' The Axe, Kiss Of Death, No Time To Lose, and Long Live Rock N Roll, that easily push the rating up to five stars
One Of The '80's Best!.......2000-11-12
This album is great from start to finish. Most notable are Psychopath and Rod Of Iron. This is classic metal, very melodic topped off with Lizzy's piercing voice. All of the songs here are well written, and really sum up what good '80's metal is all about.
Also, "The Murderess Metal Roadshow" is a must have to go along with this album. It has the entire album live, as well as a few other goodies. If you can find it, check out the accompanying video. It shows what Lizzie is all about.

AWESOME.......2006-11-11
I got this for my grand daughter and decided to open it un and listen it to it before I sent it to her. I loved it so much that I kept this copy for myself and bought another one for her. I also bought one to give as a baby shower gift! The songs and music on these CD's are just so nice! I find them VERY relaxing and peaceful. I think this should be a must for every baby. My grand daughter loves it. It immediately calms down a fussy baby. You can't put a price on that!
Calming and Soothing for your little love.......2005-05-19
I love this CD collection. My son loves to cuddle and listen to soothing and dulcet tones of the author reading the story. By the second track he is getting drowsy and by 5th one, the eyes are closed. It's the only CD that keeps him entertained till he falls asleep in the crib. The other CD's are great at stopping cranky moods. I don't know what it is about this collection but it's just made for little ears!

Kiri Proves she can "crossover".......2004-08-08
In "Heart to Heart" Kiri definitely proves that she can sing almost anything she chooses to. My personal favorite on this
one is probably "He Was Beautiful." I have had a very hard time
obtaining copies of this CD due to it being out of print. My
mother's friends all want copies since all the songs are basically love songs. Some say Malcolm was a poor choice for a
duet partner, however without him the lovely title song would never have been written or sung. That would have been a real loss because it tends to be a favorite. He wrote it for Kiri
as a part of their work together. So, I think if he had any weaknesses he made up for them by writing that song. It's a shame it isn't a choice people can listen to on this site. Actually, after writing this I went back and listened to the selections. They are all scrambled, so that the 1st one is Heart to Heart which isn't even on the possible list of songs to preview!! Overall, a lovely CD of beautiful and familiar songs sung very
well.
Wonderful Cross-over.......2001-08-28
Granted, this is not the best example of pop-style music. However, if you appreciate terrific singing and can't stand the yelling that pop is overwhelmed with, but still like the standard pop music, this is a great album. Kiri, while not the best interpreter, does a fine job with the music. She manages to cut out the operatic sound and deliver a decent pop sound, while still maitaining an integrity in her singing. The music is somewhat dated by now, but who cares? Definitely one to add to the Kiri collection.
Romantic 'popular' songs by Kiri, particularly for women.......1999-04-18
Kiri's voice is so remarkable she can even sing 'country' (Pieces of April). Her timing and expression of a David Foster song (The Best of Me) would compete with Celine Dion anytime. The only weakness in the album (and it is considerable) is with her collaborator, Malcolm McNeill. However popular he may be 'at home', his voice is so overshadowed by hers that it is difficult to listen to them together. Fortunately, she does many 'solo', so the album is still great, especially if a 'remote' is handy. Unfortunately, it seems to be difficult, if not impossible, to obtain this CD now, so Kiri as a 'pop' singer will likely leave that stage to Celine or Barbra. I loved it though, so covet my rare copy.

Customer Reviews:
Another fine addition to the series.......2001-02-13
After a bit of a slip with the second, this series was back on track with this third CD of songs cut from well-known musicals. As I mentioned in a previous review, just about any successful musical has had songs cut from it, not always because the song wasn't good, but because it no longer fit the show as updated, or a character or scene was cut (the booklet explains why each song was removed from its show). Once again, the songs are all good and the performances are wonderful. My favorites are "Mama's Talking Soft" (cut from Gypsy), "Big Fat Heart" (Seesaw), "Your Own College Band" (Where's Charley?), "When I Go Out Walkin' with my Baby" (Oklahoma!), and "Pick Up the Pieces" (also Seesaw). Bruce Kimmel was smart in using show singers instead of pop singers. I recommend the entire series. This CD features some fine songs that deserve renewed appreciation.
