when i'm in the mood (3.5 stars).......2006-02-17
cannibal corpse has been getting a lot of bad press lately in the underground, i suppose a lot of people are getting bored with them, but i still enjoy their earlier albums. after barns left (to join the fairly weak six feet under) the band lost part of their sickening aura in favor of a more complex approach, but is that why we listen to gory metal? people say the band is single minded and a bit dull, and of course they are, but if they weren't i would never listen to this.
the instrumentation on this album is in the old school style mostly, the druming differs from more recent styles in a way, not being a drummer i'm not sure how to describe it, there is certainly less bass drum work on this record than some of their later output. most of the time both guitars and bass move together in simple crunchy riffs, with some time changes. the vocals are groaned in a very monotone fashion and the whole of the album is very repetative.
now to the lyrics, i know a great number of mothers were upset about this and cannibal corpse's other albums, and you can see why in those wonderfully colorful, wholesome lyrics. lines like "deterioration of grated genitals, dangling from the hooks - obscene feelings deep inside me" show that while the whole ordeal is pretty weird, it is purposly over the top. sometimes i can't decide whether or not it supposed to be entirely funny or just a dry exageration, but either way it can be entertaining. i really have to admit, it is funny to hear people complain about this band; they never claimed to be dream theater.
well i don't listen to this very often, though i am while writing this. my favorite song is without a doubt 'covered with sores.' get this if you enjoy the gorey stuff, but it isn't as good as carcas. for new death metal fans i would recomend the bleeding as their best album as well, as this one does get tedious, but i'd also recomend morbid angel and autopsy first.
Butchered At Birth 2: Remastered Version .......2005-09-09
This is another important edition to my Cannibal Corpse collection. I bought it some time in the fall of 2002 along with the remastered versions of Eaten Back To Life and Tomb Of The Mutilated. Like all Cannibal Corpse releases, I had to have it.
Now before my review, I need to say some things that are very important. Those things have already been mentioned on the middle pharagraph for my review for the original version of this album. For those who want to read it, just go to my review for the original version and you will find it. The version that I'm reviewing now is the remastered version.
Now for my review. I have already reviewed the original version. So for those who have read the review, you already know what I think about this album. This version however is a remastered version and is not that different from the original. Some things have stayed the same but some have been changed or enhanced but like I said on my review for the remastered version of Eaten Back To Life, nothing Chris Barnes has been taken out but here are some of the changes.
1. The Artwork And Layout - The cover is pretty much the same but enhanced. It features the George Fisher era albums logo. The layout, inner sleave and dialog have also have been enhanced. There is also a short commentary by Paul Mazurkiewicz about the album. So those are pretty much some of the changes as far as the album cover and sleave are concerned but the gruesome stories of Boris Gilles De Rais and Albert Fish are still there and like I said before, no trace of Chris Barnes' influence has been removed.
2. The Music - The music is pretty much the same as the original and the sound and production of the album has not changed much. The front of the CD however is enhanced. There is also a bonus track and it is a live version of Covered With Sores which can be played in regular CD audio or CD-ROM for your computer. This live version of the song sounds like something that never made it on Live Cannibalism.
So all in all, this is a very important edition to a true Cannibal Corpse collection. So buy it and get re-butchered.
Increased Emphasis On Brutality.......2003-11-17
This is the second Cannibal Corpse album and it came out in August 1991. While their first album had lots of great thrash influenses in the riffing department, this album seemed to go for more all out brutlaity and bloodshed!! It opens with "Meat Hook Sodomy" with some intense guitar feedback as the intro before heading into an all out blasting death metal song. "Gutted" is next up and reaminds a concert favorite to this day. "Living Dissection" has lots of great riffs and a catchy vocal pattern during the chorus. Those who say this album is just a blur and has no memorability aren't paying enough attention!! "Covered With Sores" is one of the more mid-tempo tracks and is always another great live song. My favorite here is "Vomit The Soul" which is one of their more satanic songs lyrically, and it also has some of the best riff patterns and leads of the album. The titles cut s all otu brutality and the album closer "Innards Decay" shows the band has a slight melodic touch when it comes to solos. I doubt the critics of this band made it to the final song which is their loss since if they would listen to the leads in that song they would see the band is very talented!! With this album Cannibal Corpse showed they were contenders in the rising death metal genre, and they are today seasoned veterans!! This remastered edition also includes a live video clip of "Covered With Sores".
Killer.......2003-06-27
At first, I didn't like this album much, but then I actually listened to it a bit more. Gutted(The Song) inspired me to buy it. The drumming absolutely tears up anything CC have produced after this album(Haven't heard EBTL), brutal. I'd say this album lives up to Tomb Of The Mutilated, or at least pretty close. The vocals aren't as sick but the musicianship is fantastic. Basically, if you like CC, you'll like this album, especially the psychotic double bass pedal blasting :) The remaster features a video which I have yet to make function on both of the newer remasteres, and a live song(Covered With Sores) with vocals by Corpsegrinder.
Trying To Even Things Out.......2002-12-28
I'd recommend the remaster of Eaten Back To Life over this cd, but I'd still give this cd about 4 stars. It gets a bit repetitive here and there, but it's a very good cd overall. The remastering helped considerably. The bass is still buried under everything else (which is unfortunate, because Alex is the best thing this band ever had), but the guitar sound is much improved. I'm giving it 5 stars to help even it out a bit, thanks to a couple of ignorant twits that didn't justify their poor reviews. I'd recommend the remaster of Eaten Back To Life over this cd.

if you are a fan of death metal then you need to get this album
to complete your canibal corpse collection
Disgusting, Vile, Atonal..........2006-06-09
...everything that death metal was meant to be. Though many claim that death metal is uncreative and repetitive, it might be a result of the underproduction that most album of this caliber display. If you used the same kind of production that most metal albums of today got, then it would probably sound more or less the same, minus the melody, of course. But that's what death metal is all about: atonal, growling vocals, powerful guitar riffs, and intense drumming, definitely not the kind of metal you'd find your average high school teen headbanging too. What I'm really sick of hearing is people who claim that they listen to "the heaviest f**kin' death metal you'll ever hear", and those bands they speak of are mere metalcore outfits like Trivium and Atreyu (and occasionally Project 86.
<---what the hell?). I think it's time these misguided youth get a taste of what death metal is; not that they should like it or anything, but at least give them the right information so that authentic metalheads such as myself don't look down on them. Bottom line: Project 86 = post-hardcore. Cannibal Corpse = death metal. Get your facts straight, people.
Now for the album. As far as death metal goes, this album is somewhat mediocre, especially when compared to other bands like Deicide and Morbid Angel, but a lot of the songs on here are enjoyable, like the track "Meat Hook Sodomy", which is the first death metal song that ever scared me (the opening vocals sound inhuman and the guitars have a strange, hypnotic tone about them that makes the song sound genuinely evil), as well as other, less frightening tracks like "Vomit the Soul" and the title track. Though you can't really decipher the unintelligible, guttural growling lyrics emanating from Chris Barnes' throat, just thinking of the theme of the band reminds you that those vocals invading your ear are intensely violent and gory.
In the end, Cannibal Corpse has done better than this in their following albums like "The Bleeding" and the recently released "Kill" (don't get angry, you damn purists, at least you can understand him and his voice doesn't sound like he's mouthing words as water from a showerhead sprays against his lips). But if you want some seriously frightening music, then you should pick this album up, along with the aforementioned ones. Also check out some death metal bands like In Flames (I highly recommend "The Jester Race") and Children of Bodom (start with "Follow the Reaper" for a good idea of them), and try not to act out any of the lyrics you read from this album. *sarcasm*

beautifully inspirational and uplifting album...if you're a serial killer!!!.......2006-04-23
I listened to Butchered at Birth after my introduction to this band (live cannibalism). I liked LC because of the raw, blister and peel death metal and became an immediate fan of Cannibal Corpse. I then bought Gore Obsessed at Best Buy (it was the only CC album they had)and I thought it was great. Then I ordered Butchered because I had read that it was one of the band's best albums. I finally heard it and immediately fell in love with this album! The vocalist on this album is not "Corpsegrinder" Fischer. Fischer's vocals (on later albums)are more coherent, and he occasionally highlights the songs with a pyschotic (and from the sound of it, truly painful to perform)scream. But this guy Chris Barnes doesn't do that. His vocals cannot be understood at all (I listened to it first without the lyric sheet, and I could only recognize the words Bleed, Vomit, and suffer!). But his vocals are better because they are so much more morose sounding. Butchered made me realize that the later CC albums are pretty tamed compared to the Barnes-era. The songs on this album are good, and the low cost production they used for this album actually enhances this dyed in the wool ultra-traditional death metal. The music is steady, dual-guitar metal riffage with double kick pedal drums played pretty fast. My only complaint are the guitar solos. The solos on this album are really shallow and they feel like they dont't really add anything to the music. When you listen to Butchered at Birth, the album draws this image of this guy who works at some dirty porno shop on the side of the highway and mugs and kills people occasionly for supplementary income. Butchered makes you think of cold, rainy, miserable days. It makes you think of things like filthy apartment rooms and flourescent lights and that disgusting black and orange mold that shows up on the corners of your bathtub because the grouting has gotten too wet. In other words, Butchered at Birth is a really good death metal album!
CC should have more respect from Music Lovers!.......2006-04-19
Cannibal Corspe is a band that gets no credit from anyone outside of the death metal world, and its really a shame. I will admit that it takes a certain type of ear to to listen to Death Metal, and thats why you dont see it on the pop charts. To get back to "Butchred at Birth" when you first absorb it, it really kinda throws you into a state of uncertainty, since it is so brutally fast, and yes, at times it can sound so repetitive, because your mind cant absorb what is going on. As I have listened to the album through the years, it gets better and better, and if you really take the time, and sit back, follow the lyrics in the insert, and listen to what is going on, you really will be amazed at how well everything is put together. This is probely one of the fastest "Death Metal" albums of all time, and even though it comes off a bit sloppy at times, there are moments of pure genius here. I cant reccomend this to everyone, as the first few listens might really leave you confused, but the more you listen, the more it grows on you, and it really reminds me of Gorguts, since they were another band, right around this time (1991) that threw me off guard, but as I listened, I saw the brillence in it. Just like all the great rock artist of our time, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Zepplin, AC/DC, Pink Floyd, and Rush, CANNIBAL CORPSE should earn there way into greatness, just like these other bands did, even though its not the norm, it doesnt mean that it sucks. ENJOY

Album Description
UK pressing. Butchered At Birth is super-heavy Floridian Death Metal at it's best and features some intense songs on one of the most brutal albums ever created. The album opens up with 'Meat Hook Sodomy', a classic favorite amongst fans. As the song twists and turns metamorphing into many different time changes, vocal pattern changes, and cascading drum changes, one marvels at Cannibal's speed and technicality. Other titles, including 'Gutted', 'Living Dissection', 'Under the Rotted Flesh', 'Vomit the Soul' and 'Rancid Amputation' pretty much tell the story. This is the kind of stuff you listen to with the lights on. Not that it's easy to be scared. As the words are churned and ground to mere vocal road kill of their former selves by The Corpse Grinder (lead-singer), 'Butchered At Birth' was voted 'Cannibal Corpse's Best Album' on the Metal Blade website. 'Butchered At Birth' features some immense songs by the only band to feature in 'Ace-Ventura' for 30 splitting seconds! This album is worth a place in any good Death Metal collection. This album is worth a place in any good Death Metal collection. Blackend. 2005.
