4 out of 5 stars once again, back in fine form.......2006-08-11

Nathan Gray and the boys are finally back doing what they do best. After "tomorrow come today" and their disasterous time with wind up records, i didnt think id ever be hearing from boysetsfire again.
Now signed to equal visions records, an indie that understands them, the band has revisited their "after the eulogy" years a little with this release. Grey's hartbroken vocals and bloodcurdling screams are back at the forefront, while the music is the usual miox of hardcore/emo-punk it always was. Welcome back boys.............we missed you

5 out of 5 stars way better then any of the emo that has come out!.......2006-05-23

yes this album is no After the Eulogy or The day the Sun Went out but it is a damn good album and the dvd it comes with is one great dvd they play almost every song they have written in one live set. you cant go if you havent got this album yet get it you will not be disappointed

5 out of 5 stars A less articulately worded review from a long time fan.......2006-04-14

BSF have always amazed me with their ability to combine powerfully moving lyrics with music that I have yet to get bored listening to. I have never written a review on here before, and the first few that I read, I was very pleased with. I scrolled down further and saw a comparison to Christina Aquilera "Its a little reminiscent of Cristina Aguilera's vocal contortions, which is scary." I wouldn't usually write a review but when I saw that review I felt it was not only a huge injustice to the cd, but to anyone considering buying it. In my opinion the "originality and passion" you speak of was far better captured in their music prior to After the Eulogy. Songs such as "In Hope" and "Resection" are what drew me in as a life long fan. I consider every record they have made since then to be the sound of a band not afraid to experiment with something new. Once again, I am not a english major I am a fan giving my honest opinion. If you have ever enjoyed Boy Sets Fire then ignore the closed minded review I mentioned.

5 out of 5 stars "Misery" Loves My Stereo........2006-04-05

One thing I've always looked for in a band or artist is an evolving sound. I don't want to listen to the same songs rehashed again and again that start leaving a stale flavor like old fishsticks. Fortunately, BSF doesn't disappoint.

"Misery Index" is really a great composition of vocals, lyrics, and smashing guitars and beats. It does sound slightly disjointed, but that's what keeps the listener interested. They tried a lot of new sounds instead of the now generally accepted "scream until their ears bleed" routine.

For fans who enjoy the hardcore political scream ballads of past albums, this may be a bit difficult for you to get into. Granted, screaming is present in a few tracks ("So Long and Thanks for the Crutches" and "Final Communique"), but "Misery Index" seems to be centered around helplessness, hope and anguish rather than explosive outrage. This is an album comprised of songs that make you want to sing along (and you actually can!) because your feelings really connect with the beautiful vocals.

I have always enjoyed BSF's unique style, and this new edition to the collection really rounds out their abilities. It's been living and breathing in my cd player since I bought it. Excellent work. Go. Buy it. It's worth every penny.

5 out of 5 stars Not even a little disappointed.......2006-04-02

"Tomorrow Comes Today was a great album but this album - "Misery Index" - seems a more fitting follow-up to "Before the Eulogy". If you've been a fan since the beginning then there's no reason to be disappointed with this release. Unless of course you're the type that writes negative reviews because for some odd reason you expected the exact same album as before with the same composition, simply different song names; appreciate a band's evolution.

I just got my reissue copy of vision of misery and it turned out to be swallowed in black with the cover artwork for vision of misery and the cd print for vision of misery but the data on the cd is swallowed in black. I got screwed good. Get the original issue if you can!

5 out of 5 stars Sadus' Final Roadrunner Release is Solid!.......2007-04-03

A much more progressive and Death-like Sadus plays on this fine effort which is the Bay Area thrashers third release and last for Roadrunner. The playing here is top-notch but overall this album doesn't feel quite as aggressive as what came before. Regardless, this is still a worthwhile album for any thrasher as well as bass enthusiasts. I owned the original Roadrunner pressing in 2005 but upgraded to the 2006 Metal Mind Poland remaster which has much improved sound and liners.

5 out of 5 stars One of the band's three classics.......2007-03-23

Sadus could do no wrong, it seemed, until after this release. If they'd stopped here they would have been a perfect three-for-three.

Anyway, "A Vision of Misery" carries on somewhat in the traditional Sadus vein (high speed, highly technical thrash with psychotic vocals and very audible, very well-played bass parts), but adds more death metal stylings to the mix. The tempos are more varied - if "Chemical Exposure" blasted along at 200 mph all the time, and "Swallowed in Black" did so 90% of the time, with this album it might be down to 70% or so. Luckily the band is very tight whether going fast or slow, and all the parts are crisply executed. If you like thrash and death metal, this album is for you. Also, the vocals are the best the band ever had - a somewhat Chuck Schuldiner (Death)-esque snarl that is probably easier to take for most listeners than the over-the-top screams on their previous releases.

Buy this one and its two predecessors. But stay away from anything else they released later. Down that road lies madness... well, disappointment, anyway.

4 out of 5 stars The Final Hoorah.......2006-11-25

This cd becomes more musically ambient than the previous two releases. The opening track reminds me (slightly) of Type-O but if you follow the albums up to this point... the theme of this one is definitely akin to being *sick* of being depressed. There's songs about giving up, letting go. For anyone who says there's no anger though, just listen to the final track: "Everything Dies." Personally I would have set that song to be the first track and "Your Vision was Never Mine to Share," as the final track... that's a nitpick though. This album has much more singing than any of the two releases.

Best track by far would have to be "Rise and Fall" followed by a close second of the aforementioned "Everything Dies." (Neither one is anywhere like the other.)

The others are right in stating that this is the *most* underrated swedish metal act (that is now defunct.) It's sad, as Patrick's next band, Alfa Safari just doesn't do anything for me. I can understand though, if you're sick of writing depressing music, and you can't recreate that muse in your head, better to quit while you're ahead.

5 out of 5 stars Broken up but not forgotten.......2006-04-24

Misery loves co other releses like misery loves co (industrial/thrash) happy ep(brilliant live tracks) and not like them(doom influence).
This album is very mellow and melodic and dark with some of my favorite lyrics on songs such as rise and fall and when everything dies.
Sadly they did a tour and split up soon after this relsese and i never seen them live.
This album will stay fresh for a very long time because it was head of its time i think.
Misery loves co the most underated band of all time and if read my review and you are new to them check them out becuse misery loves co are great.

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Best CDs I've Ever Bought.......2001-10-16

this is an absolutely incredible cd. a change for the better. i didn't get too into Misery Loves Co. until just a few months ago, i have to admit. i heard the song "rise and fall" tho, and i was amazed. this is a perfect cd. the musical arrangements are simple, but great, proving that good writing can be better than being overly technical. i'm just getting into their older stuff now. i just downloaded "i swallow" from the self titled cd actually, and it's really good. i'll pick it and "not like them" up if i can find them. i like this, but i like the stuff on "your vision was never mine to share" better. anyways, if you're a fan of industrial music with dark and depressing lyrics and music, i'm guessing you'd like this quite a bit. the cover of The Cure's "the drowning man" on this cd is reason enough to get it.

5 out of 5 stars A technical masterpiece!!!.......2005-12-29

Rob Moore are one of the most underrated guitarists in the genre. The disgarge of the solos here is a must have for any metalhead. The basslines are from the one and only Steve D' Giorgio. Jon Allen is good in drums too, with a consistent tempo changes!!! Also recommended "Swallowed in Black".

5 out of 5 stars A great technical Thrash/Death Metal Classic .......2005-07-15

Although I always called Sadus a Thrash band, they kind of walked the thin line between Thrash and Death very closely. This album is very polished which boasts a better production than previous efforts but still sounds like Sadus.

Sadus had a pretty original sound: Steve's Thunderous fretless bass, the Travis/Moore guitar attack with all those weird little trills and Jon Allen's bassy drum kits work. It is a sound that is really hard to compare to any other band.

'A Vision of Misery' uses the same Sadus formula as in the previous 1990 effort 'Swallowed in Black'. This album is good and maybe as good as 'Swallowed in Black'. There is speed in the verse parts of the songs, there are time change ups everywhere and lots of cool beats. The vocals still have the same ominous shriek as before. But most of all what is different about this album than previous ones is that Sadus was beginning to branch out into a more musically diverse territory with different time signatures and speeds that are sped up and slowed down almost effortlessly. Lots of effects are used in the final production too.

Definitely worth checking out if you like intelligent metal in the progressive Thrash mold or if you liked Steve's performance on Death's "Human" and/or "Individual Thought Patterns". One thing is for certain: It is original.

4 out of 5 stars Great Progressive Thrash.......2004-07-28

If you like Cynic, Death or early Voivod. You need to hear this band. Steve Gigorgio on bass.

5 out of 5 stars RIPPIN- A must have.......2003-04-10

Sadus is one of my all-time faves. These guys RIP! I also own their previous albums SWALLOWED IN BLACK and CHEMICAL EXPOSURE. Lemmie tell ya, all albums are KILLER! Not one whimpy song on any of the albums. If you like your metal fast and frenetic with INSANE guitar leads and vocals, then this is the group for you.
