I wasn't expecting to have 4 discs for this price, and the music is a quality selection of film music, giving a good scope of the genre, and a very listenable transfer.

For the price, this CD is a great bargain. The musical selections, as you might expect, are mixed in quality ranging from extraordinary to so so, the balance being worthwhile and interesting. Sonically the CD is excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Umph's=Greatness.......2006-12-02

Tyler, clearly you don't much about good musicianship. This band, especially the guitarists are the some of the best musicians around today. Umphrey's is not trying to be anybody, that is the most inaccurate statement i've heard in awile. In fact it's the opposite, they blend soo many different styles and genres, from blues to jazz to reggae to rock, that you cannot put a finger on their music. They can play anything and they are the tightest band around right now. Go see them live and you will be amazed and don't listen to "tyler"

2 out of 5 stars Unimpressive.......2006-03-11

I saw Umphrey's McGee at the Chicago theatre and have to say I was a little disappointed. I hadn't heard their music before but had heard good reviews. Unfortunately, I can't say I was overly impressed. Here are my impressions - their music is just O.K. and the vocals (what little they have) are horrendous - off key and painful to listen to. During the show I couldn't help but get the impression that Umphrey's was trying to follow in the footsteps of the dead and phish - the music and attitude is undeniably "phishesque". Perhaps Umphrey's is trying to cash in on the void left by their absence, but truth is Umphrey's just isn't at the same level. The extraordinary musical talent found in Phish and the Dead is noticeably missing in Umphrey's. All that is left is a somewhat impressive light show and a theatre saturated with patchouli oil and herb. This is probably why the vast majority of their crowd consisted of high schoolers. Eager to be there for the "experience" and atmosphere, they simply didn't care that the music was sub-par or just didn't know any better.

4 out of 5 stars better once youve heard it live.......2006-01-06

but there are so many tracks that are so much better live. dont get me wrong, i love this cd, but it dosent compare to live versions of most of the songs. all of the songs are great, but when played live, even when they arent jammed on are just better than whats on the cd. for instance, uncle wally on this cds okay but not as good as it is live and when its played electric.

all in all a great album. nothing too fancy and white mans moccosins are still some of my favorite um songs even with all their new stuff out

5 out of 5 stars Keepin in Real.......2005-12-17

Sexy album. I have seen Umphreys a number of times, and have quite a bit of their music, and this is my go to when I want some Umphreys. I like it better than Anchor Drops (which is also great), because it feels a little more open and free, AD can get dense and heavy at times (which is good, because it doesn't just sound like more of the same).

I like the use of acoustics as lead guitars in Uncle Wally and Water. Andy's Last Beer is a song anyone will like. Ringo, Roulette and Hurt Bird Bath are very very sexy, but my favorite song (which I have yet to hear live) is 2nd Self, mainly because of the last minute of so, which is a nice little guitar jam...BUT IT, LISTEN TO IT!

(and read the liner notes, they're fun)

5 out of 5 stars Not your average white band.......2005-07-29

"Local Band Does O.K." is far superior than "Anchor Drops" in my view. If you liked AD, you'll want LBDOK.

Some have compared UM to Phish, but I don't hear it. These guys ain't about one guy as much as Phish.

Album Description

Christine Kane's fifth CD is titled "Right Outta Nowhere," but Christine is coming from anywhere but nowhere. In a career that has spanned ten years and thousands of miles on the road, Christine has released four CDs on her own record label, Firepink Music. With growing record sales and increasing national exposure, her label is now a thriving business with its own in-house publicist and booking agent.

Christine's last CD "Rain & Mud & Wild & Green" was named Best of 2003 (Folk category) by Borders Books & Music and was critically acclaimed by national and local press, from "The Washington Post" to "The Dallas Morning News." The raw mix of acoustic textures and rhythms, Christine's earthy and elegant voice and her poignant lyric purity all combined to provide a refreshingly real work of art that has given her a place among the most popular touring acts in the acoustic world. Produced by Ben Wisch, "Rain & Mud & Wild & Green" continues to be a sales success.

Her new release, "Right Outta Nowhere" promises to continue the upward momentum with a full national radio and press campaign and is already garnering high praise from within the music industry. Produced by Christine and Dave Pomeroy, and featuring some of Nashville's most prominent musicians, "Right Outta Nowhere" is a convergence of lyrical poetry, song craft, and acoustic perfection. Songs like "Overjoyed" and "The Good You Do" celebrate both the vulnerability and strength of the human spirit with haunting grace, while others like "Nowhere Left to Go" and "Whole Other World" (co-written with veteran hit songwriter Steve Seskin) leap effortlessly into the realm of mass market appeal. The end result is a testimony to an artist on the verge of deserved national recognition who comes seemingly "Right Outta Nowhere."

3 out of 5 stars I hoped for more that I got........2005-12-03

I first heard Christine Kane in 1997. It was a small concert venue, and she was really inspiring -- both her lyrics and her stage personality. I still love my autographed copy of "A Thousand Girls."

But I have been so disappointed with her two most recent albums. The music keeps getting more sophisticated and beautiful. The lyrics are stuck, thematically and emotionally, in the same place they were in 1997. As a result, this music no longer sounds fresh to me, and no longer inspires.

I bought Right Outta Nowhere hoping that R&M&W&G was just an anomaly. From the opening lines of the first track, I thought, "It's another Christine Kane song about a woman trying to get away from the oppressive expectations of her family so she can be true to herself." Maybe this is unfair. After all, how many songs are there about there about people having been left by their loves, or finding true love, or regretting lost opportunities, or whatever? But there seems to be a deeper rut here. "Four Legs Good Two Legs Bad" is fun, but the cat hair in the tofu seems an awful lot like it's been sitting around since it did its duty in the kitchen on "(No Such Thing As) Girls Like That" on R&M&W&G.

So, in all, I'm disappointed. From the one live track on Right Outta Nowhere, I think I would still really enjoy seeing Christine in concert. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to matter a whole lot what's on the playlist.

5 out of 5 stars Be inspired to follow your heart!.......2005-06-20

This album is profound and inspiring. I stumbled into a performance by Christine in Fairfax, VA and bought the CD. I love it! The lyrics put into the words many of the feelings and thoughts I have. The CD will inspire you to take a chance and the leap of faith you have been wanting or needing to take.

5 out of 5 stars modern day joni mitchell.......2005-04-12

and I say that because of the influence her music is having on people's lives. Not only is the music beautiful, but it's written with the purpose of serving others. You're bound to feel refreshed/empowered after meditating on the lyrics of "Right Outta Nowhere", "Overjoyed", and "Made of Steel".

Buy both of her albums and back up copies to spare. Chances are you'll let a friend borrow it and they won't give it back!

5 out of 5 stars Four Legs Good, Two Legs Bad.......2004-12-02

This cut alone is worth the price of the CD. Any gal who's ever loved a critter, this one's for you.

5 out of 5 stars Right Outta Nowhere...and into your CD player.......2004-07-31

If you are going to buy one album this year, this is the one! (And if you're going to buy two, get Christine's last album, Rain and Mud and Wild and Green, if you don't already have it...) Christine's music speaks of all the world's greatest beauty, and serves as a revival for everyone who values friendships, earth, animals and the importance of a good deed. Her unique blend of humor and contemplation can let the average person know they are making a difference in the world, simply by following their heart and doing what is right. On top of that, she is a knockout singer/musician and this album showcases her most subtly sophisticated songwriting arrangements to date. You won't regret owning an album from this songwriter who is quickly making a name for herself.

5 out of 5 stars Some of the best songs I've ever heard!.......2001-07-18

These guys are some of the nicest people you would ever want to meet and they KNOW country music! 'You Have the Right to Remain Silent' is a gem of a song. I have other personal favorites from this album and I sing along regularly! Steve Murray has been singing since high school and has a rich and unique voice. He sings sad songs, up-beat songs, and classics equally well. You should hear him do 'Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay'!! I could be partial since I know him well and since I recently married his cousin and now we're related, but if you love real songs that exemplify great country music, this album is for you!

4 out of 5 stars We need more of these guys!.......2000-06-28

Whilst some of the songs on this CD aren't to my personal liking (It's up to you) the others are so fantastic that they make up for any shortfalls. You Have The Right to Remain silent is a beauty, but best of all is No 7, Who are You? Worth a listen too for sure!, and i'll be first in line for the next CD.

5 out of 5 stars What a great album.......2000-05-29

These guys may be the most under-rated group in country music. This album, their first, has several of the best songs I've ever heard, delivered in a way you can't forget. The title cut, and the unforgettable ballad, "I'm A Stranger Here Myself" are what the genre is all about. A classic blend of artists and material.

5 out of 5 stars You Have The Right To Remain Silent.......2000-01-24

Great songs that touch true life experiences that all can relate to. This group of artists have all the potential needed with their soul touching lyrics and their cowboy manners. Live performances will not soon be forgotten..these artists are down to earth and a pleasure to watch, as well as listen to....hoping for more releases in the near future.

3 out of 5 stars great song.......1999-08-12

I'm a country music lover and although I dont care for the cd as a whole The Title cut is one of the most emotional grabbing songs I've ever heard

On her seventh studio album, Ferrick gets in touch with her inner control freak, producing, arranging, recording, mixing, and playing every note. That sound you hear isn't a train wreck; it's her manic, percussive guitar and jittery drumming pushing her strongest set of songs over the edge of polite folk confines. The aggressive, albeit mostly acoustic, sound suits the sexual and personal confidence of her lyrics. She burns bridges and laughs, "I'm a wicked good swimmer/watch me dive." She dares an ex-lover to call her "fearless" and when she finds a new partner she threatens to dance into a romantic "slaughterhouse." But the set's finest moment is the deceptively simple highway song "Westbound," a trance-like groove surrounded by spacey synth loops and murmured vocals urging Ferrick further down the road--an apt closing sentiment for her most ambitious album. --Roy Kasten

5 out of 5 stars I am so addicted.......2005-01-07

I recieved this CD in June for my birthday, and listened to it a few times....then when I really listened to it about a month later, I couldn't get enough of it, and I still can't seem to get it out of my CD player. I absolutely love Westbound and Every Three Words, well, actually there isn't a bad song on the whole CD. After seeing her in concert in December, I have discovered that I am completely addicted to ALL of her music... I am buying all the cd's as quick as I can find them. This is my favorite studio album (so far)!

5 out of 5 stars Believe the reviews.......2004-12-04

How many ways are there to say something's good? And how many reasons? I'll throw my 2 cents in because The Other Side really is that good, right up there with Everything I Need and Valentine Heartache, Melissa's 2 best studio albums in my opinion.

She rocks out a bit more on this one, grooving hard on "Bad Bad Girl." "Beijing," the opening track, is the sort of catchy, joyous tune I haven't heard much of since Everything I Need. And the closing track, "Westbound," a low-key song with an undertoned chorus, incorporates electronic elements I haven't heard in her music before and makes the instrumentals more prominent and more important than the vocals.

There really aren't any weak moments on the album. It's folk, pop, rock, and groove. It's very much Melissa.

Don't forget that as good as she is in the studio, Melissa is even better live. So be sure to check out her 3 live albums and catch a show if you can.

5 out of 5 stars the master class.......2004-09-30

After seeing Melissa Ferrick so many times live I started to feel like her albums weren't living up to what I knew best became her - getting on stage and breathing it all: the music, the space, the audience. *The Other Side* has broken my disenchantment with her studio work. 30 seconds into the first song, you know it's all her, and you're grateful for every blissful minute of it. 'Beijing', 'Nebraska', and 'Bad Bad Girl' are standouts - perhaps we have a live replacement for 'Drive' in the latter? I haven't seen her perform in almost a year, but I would be ecstatic to see her drag that song out like she has 'Drive'.

If you've never heard Melissa before, this or *Everything I Need* are good introductions. If it's been awhile, don't hesitate to get this album. And if you've never seen her live, save your money and get a ticket. One gets the feeling that she's found her calling and that she is singularly and entirely herself when performing these songs that mean so much to her. Rarely do I feel that so intensely at any show, and to see her is to feel a connection with her and Brian and everyone else in the room who is tossing around and sharing amazing energy. At a good show, it's better than drugs.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Tunes.......2004-08-03

I am a recent Melissa Ferrick fan, and I must say I was impressed by this album. I have all her previous records, and Melissa is a musician that never ceases to amaze me. Every album has its own distinct flavor, and this one is no exception. Very different from her past inspirations, this album lacks much of the raw, gritty guitar on her older, much less-produced albums. I must say when I first played this album, I wasn't sure what to think. Especially by the end track "Westbound", which sounds more like a remix of something, but like I said: It's different, and I loved it for that. Like with her past albums, it displays a new side of her talent as a musician, as she plays all the instruments, and once again, we are blessed with her sexy in-your-face lyrics. I have to agree with the other folks who have written reviews that "Bad Bad Girl" is the best track on the album, though, I'd also like to cast a vote for "Anything Anywhere", and "Nebraska", though "Nebraska" isn't as powerful as the live version on "70 People at 7000 Feet". Then again, Melissa is always best live.

2 out of 5 stars Not exactly a string quartet.......2006-01-09

Calling this a "string quartet" tribute is a bit misleading, on two counts: firstly, (and granted, this is a nitpick) the traditional string quartet comprises two violins, a viola, and a cello (no bass or other add-ons); the second shortcoming is much more serious.

Other than the solo violins, most of the music has been produced electronically--that's right, the "quartet" is made up of a couple of violinists accompanied by a computer! Anyone who buys this recording expecting to hear the Canadian power trio re-invented by classical musicians is getting ripped off. Is it any wonder that the front cover describes the "artists" as a generic "string quartet," rather than telling you exactly to whom you're listening?

The arrangements are actually not bad at all; it's a shame that whoever put them together didn't feel the need to hire real musicians.

4 out of 5 stars Quirky, but quality work........2005-09-12

This CD was well produced and has a fine range and depth of sound. The music itself very well mirrors the focus of the project, the best band of all time (in my opinion, of course) RUSH. Some people, like my wife (who is also a RUSH fan), find the string quartet treatment of any rock band somewhat disturbing. I find it an enjoyable change. All things considered, it is obvious that a lot of hard work went into every aspect of the CD, this isn't some "fly by night" company. I'm sure the musicians were tired keeping up with the fast paced rythms of YYZ and other high tempo songs. The recording is crisp. The sound is clear. The music is arranged true to the original songs. There's really nothing more I could want as a RUSH fan who also likes symphonic music from time to time. This disc certainly isn't for everyone, but if you're curious and on the fence, I suggest you'll probably like it.

3 out of 5 stars The thought is nice... but falls a little short........2005-03-09

This is certainly an honor to the band and their great music. But, it lacks something. A few of the cuts come off ok -- but others just rub me wrong. I think it could have worked better had it been arranged differently. (I have always thought Rush tunes would sound great played by a full orchestra -- it seems to me a full percussion section is required).

5 out of 5 stars A very pleasant surprise.......2005-03-04

I am, and have been, a huge RUSH fan for many years now and I was utterly amazed by this CD. It is outstanding.

Now, I will be the first person to admit that I'm not the world's biggest fan of violin or cello music.. Let alone tribute albums... But, this was like nothing I had ever heard before. The complexities of RUSH's arrangements and melodies lend itself perfectly to the classical sounds of the string quartet. The performance is both dynamic and moving. The music flows so seamlessly and beautifully giving a unique new way to appreciate the already expansive music of RUSH. I give it my highest recommendations.

To the magnificent performers on this album I say "Bravo" and offer a standing ovation. I can only hope that you will see fit to release a second tribute album.

2 out of 5 stars Stop The Madness!.......2004-12-10

No, no, no, no!

String Quartet People: please go back to what you do best and leave rock-n-roll alone.

Guitar Hero Shredders: please leave Bach, Beethoven and the other masters alone!

Enough said!

5 out of 5 stars This Album ROXX!.......2007-02-07

A 5 Star album. The music is great stuff. And the messages are as relevant today as they were then.

3 out of 5 stars A period piece?.......2006-03-31

Recording from 1981-82, the beginning of the Reagan presidency. It's not really an indictment on our 40th president. Rather, it's a regurgitation of liberal fears of what a Reagan administration would be like: war ("Lysistrata"), the elimination of the welfare safety net ("Only Human"), corporate greed ("Last Dollar", "Love of Money", the title cut), and censorship ("Fahrenheit 451"). History reveals that Utopia were better artists than prognosticators (don't quit your "Day Job", Todd!). It's hard to argue with the tunes, however, many of which are infectious, and almost convincing (almost!). Which proves that, by definition, rock music is "feel" music, best served from the left.

5 out of 5 stars Stinging sarcasm and political bite to a rock'n'roll groove........2000-03-15

What intrigued me when I first ran into this years back was the "rock'n'roll (da Beetles, in particular) is the devils music" bonfire shot--with the album's cover superimposed as the offending product...Jiminy Crunketts, what chutzpah! Then I was afforded a listen by my friendly neighborhood record store clerk...I liked it immediately, but I was never a big fan of Todd Rundren before this. "Lysistrata" is a personal favorite, 'cause that's actually what is sorta what's happenin', but no one's had the...uh...chutzpah to say it. "One Million Monkeys" and "Shinola" are catchy skewerings of the music industry, but the Gamble/Huff "For the Love of Money" and "Last Dollar On Earth" are "anti-Greed is Good" anthems if I ever heard one. Listening to this now makes one realize that things have not changed that much from them Reagan years, the game's the same but the faces have changed...also, do we have anybody besides these boys and Joanie Baez to lay it on the line and tell the people the real deal?

4 out of 5 stars Swing to the right.......2000-01-24

I didn't realize when I was in high school how these songs would follow me in life. Brilliant; atypical Todd Rundgren. Though basically anti-establishment, some may notice some songs have been used by major companies (i.e. Nissan among others) in ads of the past ten years. A sleeper in the best sense. You should have this in your CD collection. A precursor to bands such as BNL and Phish, Utopia's sense and sendiments can be shared and felt by all who listen.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting, upbeat pop with bit of Reagan-era commentary........1999-03-27

As always, a team effort from the band. Interesting songs which rise above the amusing, straight-forward, uncomplicated pop-rock on "Adventures In Utopia."

A number of the songs are social commentary on attitudes of the Reagan-era (I know Todd was no Reagan fan!). But the messages are by no means obnoxious (even if you're a staunch conservative!) and deal with money and greed in society (and the record industry). (Last Dollar on Earth, For the Love of Money, Swing to the Right and Junk Rock (Million Monkeys).) The theme is not distracting or overbearing (this is no rock opera) and all of the songs are good standing alone.

Kasim and Todd split most of the lead vocals while Roger gets a turn as usual (though Roger is more valuable as a keyboard player than a vocalist!). Todd's vocals are nicely featured on Only Human.

All in all, one of the best albums from the Rundgren, Sultan, Powell, Wilcox version of Utopia.

(Note: as a Todd/Utopia disciple, I give it 5 stars! But for most people this is not what you'd call a Sgt. Pepper! But, still, a nice effort from a fun bunch of guys.)

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Not half bad.......2007-04-28

While I would agree that this CD can't compete with original material, I would still state that as tribute CDs go, this one has its merits.

Lynn's sole solo CD, since he left ELO and since the Wilbury's died off..."Armchair Theater." is consigned to short attention span reviewers, so I have this one to address.

The cuts are really well recorded and they are cool played really loudly...(my neighbors are knockin,' right now). And isn't that what ELO were always about?
\
BEK

yeesh! whoda ever thought I'd have settled for three sentence reviews? Much less three paragraph?

Oh well...I'm outta here!

4 out of 5 stars Interesting Project, Varying Quality.......2007-02-15

The inestimable Doug Powell put together a disparate group of artists to cover songs of Jeff Lynne, all the way from The Move to ELO to solo to The Traveling Wilberries.

Although the songs are all superior, some covers are much better than others. I particularly enjoyed Jamie Hoover's cover of "Handle With Care," as well as Todd Rundgren's beautiful take on "Bluebird." Solid contributions also by Swag, Bill Lloyd, Earl Slick, and Jason Falkner.

I might have spliced this down to a single disc, and gotten rid of some of the covers that don't add much. But on balance this is a nice tribute to a great artist.

5 out of 5 stars Very good overall.......2005-05-06

If you really like Jeff Lynne's music, you will find something to love about this set. As mentioned by others, some of the covers are pretty straight-forward (10538 Overture, Telephone Line, among others) while many are further afield. Some are pretty way-out there, in particular Mr. Blue Sky by Tony Visconti, whose version nearly screams, "I warned you when you asked me to do this tune." But really it's all in fun I think, and most of the cuts improve with every spin.

Personal favorites include Boy Blue, One Summer Dream, Eldorado, Steppin' Out, Don't Bring Me Down, Showdown, Do Ya, and Above the Clouds. Going further about this is futile, it's all a question of taste. But I enjoyed the fresh vocals, simpler arrangements, the sometimes rough edges or techno-styled flourishes, etc.

Give this a try. Of the 2 CDs you'll find at least one whole disc of stuff you'll be glad to own.

2 out of 5 stars "Eldorado" shimmers, but the rest is weak........2004-08-15

"Eldorado" as done by Fleming and John (who?) is amazing and wonderful....the singer just absolutely makes the song her own.

The rest of the album is pretty marginal....every song other than the aforementioned "Eldorado" suffers from either amateurish performance or miles-off-the-mark reinterpretation (i.e, Todd Rundgren's drum-and-bass "Bluebird is Dead": I know the idea seems cool, but- trust me, you *don't* want to pay to hear it.)

Oh well.

1 out of 5 stars 1 star - 1 star = 0 star.......2004-07-01

Jeff deserved way better than this.

This duo, Craig and Cynthia, are welcome to crash in my town anytime !

Hard to know what label to attach to this music -- Americana, Folk/Rock, Country/Folk or perhaps the latest manifestation of Cosmic American Music ? Thing is - I don't know if they are Americans but I'd like to think that the Great GP would have approved and loved this wonderful album.

The nearest stuff I could compare this music to is probably Buddy & Julie Miller's recent joint efforts. Beautiful harmonies; I could listen to Cynthia Frazzini's voice all day. Strong melodies; there's a quaint old word for you, but it's very apt, I assure you and not a weak track on the album. The only familiar song is a (good) version of that ancient Dylan classic Subterraenean Homesick Blues.

I've just ordered their only other album, 2003s "ROW" on the strength of this one; if it only turns out to be half as good, it'll still be worth it, I reckon.
