Rock bastardizations of classical music are as old as Kim Fowley's--and ELP's--Tchaikovsky tweaking "Nutrocker." But classical interpretations of rock music have generally been something of a high-wire act. While most pop fare has strong melodic foundations for the soloist to build from, Christopher O'Riley has challenged himself here with the catalog of Radiohead, one of modern rock's most acclaimed--and texturally complex--bands. O'Riley's insightful gifts for interpretation (which have previously enlightened everything from Stravinsky to P.D.Q. Bach) produce a hypnotic, emotionally compelling listening experience here; O'Riley is a huge Radiohead fan, and that love courses through everything from the dreamy, bittersweet title track through the brooding loveliness of "Let Down." Radiohead's stock in trade is dense, multi-layered music that leans heavily on electronic processing for its moody sonic atmospherics; O'Riley's evokes those complex textures with but a judicious use of the sustain peddles, a deft use of dissonance (as on "Knives Out"), and a rhythmically anxious left hand. Call them etudes for the post-modern age if you will, but O'Riley's performances here largely achieve what all great interpretations strive for: New insight and enlightenment. --Jerry McCulley

Looking Forward, Looking Back.......2007-03-02
Ove the last decade or so, Radiohead has created some of the most complex and futuristic rock music out there, and I wondered if a solo pianist could really capture their essence on a single instrument. However, O'Riley does a marvelous job, and brilliantly conveys the melancholy, mysterious, and introspective qualities of Radiohead's music. His renditions of "Fake Plastic Trees" and "Let Down" are particularly powerful. What I really loved about this cd is while I could follow all of the songs he played, at times I felt like I was listening to an breathtaking piano sonata by Mozart or Beethoven, and even a Nocturne by Chopin. Overall, this is a faithful interpretation by an excellent musician who honors one of the greatest bands in recent times, while also paying hommage to his musical heritage. This cd is a must for even the casual Radiohead fan or anyone who enjoys the piano.
Music Lovers.......2007-02-17
i love almost all kinds of music. piano and radiohead really works for me, i liked the whole thing. if you can get into some piano, you can get into this cd. if you dig radiohead, get into it purely because someone took the time to put some awesome songs into yet another form for more audiences to get into. its beautiful. thats all there is to say.
a transcription worthy of Franz Liszt.......2006-12-08
This is a beautiful recording. Try playing it for music loving frends who would never listen to a band like Radiohead. They won't believe it when you tell them the source of this richly textured heartbreakingly melodic tour de force. I'm in my late 50's and love Mahler, Sibelius, and Beethoven. I also love Radiohead, Sufjan Stevens, John Fahey and Wilco. Good music can come along in any time and I'm glad that Christopher O'Riley loves Radiohead and transcribed it for solo piano; he's missed nothing in the process. If your not choked-up by the end of this CD, music must not be your thing.
Sleepytime music.......2006-03-27
Being the total Radiohead fanatic that I am, I decided to pick this up when it came out... perhaps a fresh take on their music would breath some life back into the songs I've been listening into the ground, I thought. So I took it up into the mountains with me and listened to it for a bit. My reaction to it now is similar to then: it's a dreamy if somewhat insubstantial collection of vaguely familiar tunes.
All of the playing on this disc is superb on the technical level... obviously O'riley is a top notch classical performer. The arrangements are a mixed bag, though. There are some amazing renditions on here - see the impressionistic 'Everything In Its Right Place' and the melancholy coffee house arrangement of 'Knives Out'. Some others are also quite listenable, including 'Subterranean Homesick Alien', 'Exit Music', 'Bulletproof', and 'Motion Picture Soundtrack'. However, the upbeat pop tunes have difficult translating to solo piano. the Pablo Honey tunes suffer the worst here, and feel slightly unnatural; perhaps like a classical pianist paying tribute to a favorite band, rather than the more personal adaptations that make the 'Knives Out' arrangement so effective.
Overall, a nice cd to put on in the background when you're reading or settling in to bed, but Radiohead fanatics beware - don't expect anything that lives up to the band's immense standards.
Nice sound.......2006-02-17
I didn't even know Radiohead songs...but now I've listened to the originals and can hear how O'Riley captures the songs on the piano. This is a great album.

Way better than its reputation.......2006-07-06
This has always been one of those Ramones albums that nobody pays much attention to, but I've always thought it's a gold mine. Some of their best songs are here: "In My Room," "Outsider," and the unreleased "Unhappy Girl" are among my all-time favorite Ramones songs. It seems like people sneer at anything of theirs that came after their late-'70s classics. Oh well. It's their loss. Skip the cover of "Time Has Come Today" and you've got an entire album of short, catchy but muscular power-pop tunes with the trademark Ramones chainsaw guitar and Joey's New Yawk vocals. This is great stuff, people.
Never understood why so many people don't rate this album...........2006-01-27
The Ramones' 7th studio album doesn't match their first album but nothing ever could. 1st albums by great bands are just that way. If you can only afford one Ramones album, buy the first, then find a way to buy more. (IMHO the only bad Ramones album is Acid Eaters.) Yes, the production on this one deviates from their trademark low-fi sound but it's good in its own way (and it beats the hell out of End of the Century, a real production cop out), SJ has some classic tracks: `Outsider', `Psychotherapy' as well as a dynamite cover of `Time Has Come Today' complete with Chambers Brothers-like cowbells. What I particularly like about SJ are the strong power pop songs like `I Need Your Love', `What'd Ya Do', `Somebody Like Me', `My-My Kind of Girl' and others. All very catchy, well sung, well played. All in all, this is another great effort. Buy the one with the bonus tracks.
Pop, Punk, experimental, psychadelic.......2006-01-09
This album has it all with a cathcy straight to the point pace. Similair to Pleasent Dreams, the albums high points are right in the start with the first five songs, the whole album is great through and through but lacks that classic Ramones sound, don't be drawn away by that, pick it up
The Transition of the Ramones.......2004-09-23
After six years and seven albums, you'd be a little stressed out, too. The Ramones had just seen their latest bid for a mass audience take the gaspipe, and still weren't in a very good place as far as relationships were concerned. Based on their success with pop-punk priestess Joan Jett, the band studioed up with producers Ritchie Cordell and Glen Kolotkin, but there was just too much strain.
Cordell and Kolotkin tired to mold the Ramones' punk into bubblegum metal and the match just doesn't work. Slowed down tempos and a sludgey mix lose whatever charm the few interesting songs have, and the choice of covers doesn't seem to fit (although "Little Bit Of Soul" comes closest). The strong points to "Jungle" are Joey's latest Phil Spectoresque concoction, "My My Kind Of A Girl" and Dee Dee's sudden quantum leap as a songwriter. The psychedelic "Highest Trails Above" and the quintessential Ramones view of "Outsider" made it clear that Dee Dee was better than songs about glue sniffing and basket cases.
It is still one of those basket case songs that remains the highlight of "Subterranean Jungle." Johnny and Dee Dee managed to graft over their broken friendship and write the fierce "Psycho Therapy" together. With Joey's fiery delivery and the wailing sirens that open the song, it is this album's contribution to the library of Ramones' classics. It was also the point where Dee Dee and Johnny became friends again and started creatively cooking for "Too Tough To Die."
The bonus tracks show what this album might have been had the production been more in tune with the band. The cover of "Indian Giver" alone could have upped the original album's quality. Same goes for "Unhappy Girl." It's nice that this release of "Jungle" digs those out, but this is still the first Ramones album where the quality slipped off.
Rest In Peace Johnny Ramone.......2004-09-17
At the time this album came out, it was a big disappointment to most Ramones fans. The group had not had much commercial success up to this point, so they brought in producers Ritchie Cordell & Glen Kolotkin, who had recently struck gold producing Joan Jett's "I Love Rock and Roll". The producers gave the group more of a pop sheen, smoothing out their rough edges. Despite this attempt to be more commercial, the album didn't sell any better than any of their other albums. There was also personal turmoil behind the scenes, as drummer Marky was fired from the group due to his drinking problem. So, how is the final product? Not so good, in my opinion. The album features a mere two songs that I would consider to be Ramones "classics" ("Psycho Therapy" and "Outsider"). The rest of the original material is pretty mediocre. Even the cover songs are not as good as usual. This album will only be of interest to hardcore Ramones fans (which I consider myself to be).

Album Description
A Night At The Opera features five young singers who have already made considerable names for themselves. The soprano Indra Thomas has been acclaimed as the next great Verdi soprano, while the mezzo-soprano Kristine Jepson has enjoyed great success in the key role of Octavian at the New York Met, in addition to other roles there and throughout Europe and America. The lyric tenor Matthew Polenzani's international career also includes appearances at the Met in a varied and challenging repertoire. The Polish baritone Mariusz Kwiecien's operatic appearances have included the Met and the Vienna State Opera, with a number of distinguished awards, and the prize-winning bass-baritone Valerian Ruminski boasts a particularly wide repertoire in a career of growing distinction. These marvelous talents are backed by the renowned Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, with internationally noted opera conductor Charles Rosekrans.
Customer Reviews:
Thoroughly entertaining sample of five fine young artists.......2005-05-13
I have only a few quibbles about this release, but it really is enjoyable, and repeated listenings have only increased my admiration. The repertoire ranges across much of the operatic spectrum - okay, there's no Wagner, but perhaps that's too much to expect at this point in their careers. Since most of these selections have been recorded by other, established artists, individual comparisons are pointless. The overall impression given by these singers is that of vibrant youth and spontaneous joy in singing. Matthew Polenzani is perhaps the best known of these, and certainly justifies one's attention with some fine tenorizing. If he can't quite pull off the SCHICCHI aria (who has, lately?) he sings a splendid Faust, and there are darn few good ones these days. He's a real pleasure to hear. Since I've heard Indra Thomas live on numerous occasions, I'm thrilled to have her on CDs at last. She possesses a soaring, juicy lyric soprano (unfortunately not all that well captured here - the voice has a gorgeous spin to it, reminiscent of the young Leontyne Price, and that emerges from the recording only occasionally). Ms. Thomas sang the most beautiful and one of the most exciting performances of the TROVATORE Leonora I have ever heard (and I've heard some great Leonoras), and I'm glad to have a memento of it here. Valerian Ruminski, whose bass is exceptionally beautiful and well-focused, is one of the most fluent male exponents of coloratura that I've heard in 50 years of live performances, so I'm delighted to have the Purcell and Handel selections. In addition, he possesses what Walter Legge called "an immediately recognizable timbre" - the voice sticks in the memory. Kristine Jepson and Mariusz Kwiecien also acquit themselves well. My single real reservation about the individual selections is Ms. Jepson's track of the Composer's outburst from ARIADNE ("Sein wir wieder gut!"). In common with many mezzos, she sounds overparted by its high, soaring lines, though she throws herself into with gusto. To my mind, this role really is best sung by a soprano. Nevertheless, Ms. Jepson proves herself adept enough for Sesto and Zerlina. Mr. Kwiecien's robust baritone is a treat to hear in Verdi, and he and Mr. Ruminski sing a wonderful PURITANI duet. The orchestra plays well and while one might wish the conductor was a bit more "accommodating" to the singers, things move along nicely. This really is, on the whole, an invigorating and tuneful evening's worth of entertainment and a promise of fine things to come.

Simply amazing.......2005-03-10
Subterranean Masquerade brings together a variety of artists from some under appreciated bands and the results are nothing short of spectacular. The lineup here is strong consisting of drummer Tino LoSicco (Epoch of Unlight), bassist Jason William Walton (Agalloch, Nothing, Especially Likely Sloth), guitarist Jake DePolitte (Anima Nera, The Kill), vocalist Paul Kuhr (Novembers Doom), and a guest appearance by Andy Winter (Winds, Age Of Silence).
The EP contains only two songs showcasing over 17 minutes of breathtaking music. There are elements from multiple genres here brough together in a wonderful amalgamation of music. We see layer of progressive rock, death metal, black metal, post rock, some blues elements and good old rock n' roll.
The 17 minute length is misleading as there is a lot to hear in these two songs. There are female vocals, beautiful violins, excellent death/black/whispered/clean vocals, excellent drumming, fantastic grooves and guitar work that all mesh together extremely well. There is no moment that feels out of place on this EP and it is really one of the best put together recordings of recent years.
The title track Temporary Psychotic State (A Recollection Of Where It All Began) is built upon an excellent bluesy guitar groove and wailing violins. The song progresses from a slow quiet pace with nice peaceful clean vocals and led by some excellent drumming ends up on loud death metal with some fantastic drumming and mournful violins layered behind the excellent music. This is truly one of the best songs in recent years. The progression of the music from peaceful to disruptive is excellent. The song is led by some excellent drumming, a very good guitar groove and fantastic vocals, both clean and growled. The lyrics are fantastic as well and work extremely well within the song. Near the end of the song, the lines "I'm almost there... I'm coming - almost touching - so real - so close - So much for fighting this psychotic state of mine " are delivered with perfection and the change from whispers to death growls on that final line is simply amazing.
The second track is also excellent. The lyrics here are about change and the line "Is this me?" brings about the metamorphosis of sound. Suddenly, the song switches from clean vocals to the wailing of a woman backed up by a somewhat middle eastern sound complete with strings. As her sorrowful cry ends, death metal vocals enter the fray again. There's another segue that brings about more death metal vocals with a leading guitar riff. Violins enter the song again. The drumming and instrumental work here is simply amazing again. The vocals work in tandem with the music and the use of violins proves an excellent choice. Repetition of "Will you hear?" with backing violins brings the song to it's end and as the instruments fade away, the mellotron becomes louder and stronger and brings the song to it's close.
This is truly an amazing release and bodes really well for the future of this band. Despite it's 17 minute length, it is well worth the purchase as the music here is complex, layered and very deep. You'll find more with each subsequent listen. If you're a fan of any of the other bands these musicians are in, a fan of great progressive metal like Opeth or Maudlin of the Well or just a fan of great music then I recommend this album. This is a fantastic release and I just can't wait for their full length album which is due out in April.
now this is music.......2004-08-21
In all honesty, my first instinct to buy this was the fact that Jason William Walton (bassist for Agalloch and many others) is on it. It had some other big names that I thought would make it good, like Paul Kuhr of Novembers Doom and Andy Winter of Winds, but since I am a die-hard Agalloch fan, it was mainly JWW. Anything he touches seems to turn gold. Subterranean Masquerade's two-track EP "Temporary Psychotic State" is no exception. This is a beautiful mix of prog-rock, folklore, and a little bit of metal. As one critic once said, "this is the kind of music Opeth should still be making." I wouldn't go that far, since Opeth is still rocking hard, but it really gives an idea of how great this band is. There are a few instances of classical instruments, mainly violin, and unlike a lot of the 'doom metal' bands, these violins are actually played well. They sound very traditional; maybe not as traditional as the ones you'll hear in Korpiklaani, but the next closest thing. Very folklore-ish. There are some female vocals that I don't care for, but they don't hurt. All in all, this is something that fans of prog rock and metal should have in their collection. Calling all Opeth, Green Carnation, etc. fans to pick one up today!

Solid.......2006-04-25
This album delivers nothing but ill beats. Nothing soft here.
Anybody who is into D. Room's second and third albums, the first T. Corp album and anything by Bonobo will enjoy this amazing album.
Smooth sounds from the dining rooms.......2005-09-14
The music was smooth and jazzy. No techno beats, no looped computer crap ran through a mixer over and over again. Nice horns and vocals. Something to listen to while sitting in a comfortable chair, sipping on a warm drink and spending time with that special someone.
Very good.......2002-08-17
It is true. This album is very good.
Numero Deux is even better.
This record is amazing........2001-01-06
This record just left me whithout words. I love every track on it. I don't know much about who are this guys, but they make very good music. A must have.

Not a masterpiece but definately a great debut/classic.......2005-03-30
its 2005, and melodic death metal is pretty much dead.
thrash metal faced the same thing by 1992. most of the leaders of the melo-death genre are metalcore/numetal generic bands, leaveing us with generic melo-death clones with no originality whatsoever.
so where do you go now?? you go look for the classics.
this is a classic. where it all began. it took less than 2 weeks to write this cd, which is amazing since its so great.
Brilliant!.......2004-08-24
If only In Flames were still like this...
I SO love this cd and find myself returning to it alot.
All the tracks are excellent! tho ya kinda have to be in the mood for the key-violin intro's/song(Hagarlaten). They are very beatifull but not for evryone, small detail tho because the rest of the music is so stunning it doesn't matter.
Quote"The first album, Lunar Strain, was the first the world ever heard of this talented band, and features very prominent guitars (courtesy of the master Jesper Stromblad) and very high-pitched vocals (is that Anders?)">>Mikael Stanne(now in DT).
Pitty the booklet is very thin and doesn't have any lyrics but you can view them on the internet.
conclusion: GET THIS CD.
5 stars for each album, 0 for the packaging........2004-08-22
This is a great collection of two great albums from one of the best and most influential of all metal bands, but I have a BIG beef with it: the packaging. The cover just says "Lunar Strain," without a hint of the fact that SUBTERRANEAN is on it, too. Okay, I can deal with that, but come on, NO LYRICS? That is just bad. At least in their earlier days, In Flames wrote some amazing, thought-provoking lyrics, filled with awesome imagery (just read the lyrics to "Jotun" and you'll know what I mean), and it's a shame not to have them reprinted in this otherwise delicious little compilation (or at least in the copy that I have - which is by no means a bootleg or anything similar).
Oh well, it's still a good collector's item.
Don't buy this here--it's cheaper in the stores!.......2004-07-27
This is a melodic Death Metal classic, and for that I award the 5 stars. However, I've price-shopped the stores around my home (So. Cal.) and it's selling for average price. It's almost the same edition with Lunar Strain and Subterranean together on one disc. Actually, the one I purchased is better because it includes an 18th track from Korea called "Eye of the Beholder." Yet it's only $15.99-17.99. Why the price jump?
By all means, get this incredible album, but avoid getting screwed while yer at it. Don't pay $35.00+ for it. For that price, you could buy 2-3 In Flames CDs & spread the love. It's hard enough to find & afford many of these great old albums already. Who is continually dropping the ball on great metal CDs and letting them go to pot?
Here are some other CDs that are either out-of-print or going OOP and demanding too high a price. Don't pay $99.99 for a Nuclear Assault CD--just burn it if you can find it. We metalheads should start an online DB/upload for albums like this so they don't get lost. Who could justifiably care if we swap files if noone is getting any damn royalties anyway? If something that actually works like this exists, please let me know.

The Heaviest Of Them All.......2004-06-15
These albums showcase In Flames original style which was melodic death. This album, or albums, have songs heavier then songs on any of their other albums. It features classics such as "In Flames", which is one of the best songs on this album. "Starforsaken" begins with a folk sound and then morphs into a brutal amazing song. "Upon an Oaken Throne" is my favorite of all their songs on this album, and is my favorite In Flames song with the exception of "Episode 666". "Behind Space" is a brutal song that is flawless. It ends with a great folk melody. The songs "Everlost Part 1" and "Everlost Part 2" are both amazing, while being completely different. "Everlost Part 1" is a loud heavy song that keeps its strength while being slow. It ends off with Stromblad doing what he does best, playing acoustic guitar. This leads up to "Everlost Part 2" which is a beautiful song featuring Stromblad playing some of the best acoustic guitar ever with a beautiful voice singing over it. The lyrics to the song are beautiful, and even fans of death metal such as me, enjoy the song. It is funny, most people would not suspect that people that listen to death metal had an emotional side of music.
All of these new fans of In Flames say that their old stuff was terrible. This brings a tear to my eye. Anybody who does not enjoy the classics on this album should never listen to In Flames. This album is flawless and rocks.

The Best Record Ever Recorded.......2006-09-04
Bringing it All Back Home (called Subterranean Homesick Blues here) is, in my humble opinion, the best record ever recorded. On it there is Bob Dylan at his acoustic best with songs such as "Gates of Eden" and "It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding). Also on this album is Dylan as he was first heard playing electric with the outstanding "On the Road Again" and "Bob Dylan's 115th Dream." And if you can get though "115th Dream" without realizing Bob Dylan is just about the greatest American poet who ever lived, well you should go back to school and study literature. This album also includes three of my favorite Dylan songs, almost acoustic, just a little electric with that beautiful guitar playing along with his young voice, and they are "She Belongs to Me," "Love Minus Zero/No Limit" and "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue." And of course you gotta listen to that song that includes the no good, rotten, doctor commie rat,"Maggie's Farm." This is the Dylan record everybody should own. It's just fantastic.

enchanting, moving, and melodic.......2005-11-16
This may be the best way to first experience Noe Venable's remarkable music. The live format underscores the hushed intimacy and gentleness that animates her work. That same intimacy also highlights her artistic courage in unveiling herself so completely.
Noe Venable is a songwriter of the highest caliber, as this collection attests. If you are like me, you will be immediately hooked by the melodic power of "Stolen Thing", "Dear Carolyne", and "Look, Luck", while the rich thematic complexity of songs like "Angelyne" will keep you thinking for weeks or months. My personal favorite is "Dandelion Hills". This song is so moving that I listen to it over and over again, and still it brings tears to my eyes.
I have been utterly enchanted by this will-o-the-wisp, and I will follow wherever her song leads. All five albums I've been able to locate thus far are high on my rotation.
Tuneful and witty.......2005-03-10
Amazing how a guitar, bass, violin and voice can sound as dense as a small orchestra when the music is just really, really good. The melodies have that rare distinction of sounding classic and utterly new at the same time, with vivid lyrics to boot. The title track alone is worth the price of the album.
Songwriter's Op.......2002-04-21
Twenty Years! Twenty years it takes me to write a few songs that I like! And my friend Joe says of Noe Venable: "Just how many great songs does she HAVE?!?" For the new listener, try the first four songs on 'Down Easy'. 'The Timebirds' and 'Look Love' are as good as you get from little known new artists. Enjoy.
But see her soon. She just opened for Ani D. and you won't be in the front row for long.
Waddaya get when ya cross Liza Minnelli with Tom Waits?.......2001-09-01
Hey, it's clear this kid trained her voice in stage work. But what I love is that she channels that awesome talent into a writing style that clearly indicates she's stretching towards something imagistic and romantic. If you ever get to see her live, she'll blow you away- only a poet could do her presence justice- someday, someone will write a GREAT poem about her- go girlfriend go!
Pleasant surprise.......2000-07-19
Went to San Francisco for conference. Ventured to a local bar called Bottom of the Hill on a lark and heard her band the Ruiners. By chance, went to Tim Finn show two days later and her trio opened. Noe Venable is a major league artist without a major label - compelling, original. "Look, luck" is a favorite, but the entire album stands up on repeated listening (I've played the disc about 15 times in past three weeks).

Bought the two separately but..........2006-11-28
Lunar Strain (tracks 1-10)
First In Flames album. It is raw and unfocused. That's what's great about it. Unexpected things happen in unexpected places. For instance, there's an all-violin instrumental, and a track done entirely using female vocals. I want to say that it's almost experimental, like they were trying out a bunch of different styles to find a sound. Of course, production quality is not the best, but after the initial listen one hardly notices anymore. It is just a little flat sounding.
Subterranean (tracks 11-15, or 11-17, not sure if those two were included on the original cd)
Heavenly. But then again, I listen to guitars more than drums or vocals or anything. Dead Eternity also appears on The Jester Race, but this version is done quite differently and adds a new perspective on the song. The Inborn Lifeless, one will see, is Dead God in Me with different lyrics (or is it the other way around?).
Overall, I probably wouldn't recommend this as a first experience with In Flames (check out The Jester Race or Whoracle.) But a good buy for someone who has a couple CDs and wants to hear how it started.
Forgotten Treasure.......2006-10-10
Let me start this off by saying I love Sweden, especially its music. Nearly half of my favorite bands come from their. In Flames, however, are by far my favorite. Godly riffs, smart lyrics, and strained vocals really make me all fuzzy feeling. With all albums but Reroute and Soundtrack under my wing, its time to give this CD a shot, so where to begin?
Well, first thing you will notice is the vocals. The singer is not, and I repeat, is not Anders. Although this singer does his job good, (cant remember his name, believe hes from Dark Tranquility), he doesnt lay a finger on Anders in term of range and compassion. Another thing you will notice is the folk-inspired theme, which is probally due to the fact that Jesper's father, Grandfather, and Great-grandfather were all Swedish folk musicians. And finally, The guitars dont sound nearly as good as they do on Jester Race, merely because Jesper isnt as good as a guitarist on this record, (in particular, his solos are very sloppy.)
However, this is still a required buy, especially if you love everything Gothenberg. My favorites from this CD include Biosphere, Upon an Oaken Throne, Starforsaken, and Behind Space, but I did not once skip.
Get this CD, and enjoy, for the future of melodeath, and metal in general, looks bleak...
incredible beginning.......2006-09-10
what a great way to start up in flames. this cd is much much different than thier newest crappy album (come clarity) or whatever. the vocals as someone else said are a little primitive. vocals on the other cd's "clayman" and reroute are more fixed up sounding and seem almost like he is screaming with some kind of special effect. the vocals in this cd are very raw and frankly if the music wasn't so good it would drag it down. a lot of the riffs are awesome. not to mention these guys play a mean melodic riff here and there like in the end of the first song. it sounds like something straight out of pirates of the caribbean or something. very good stuff. it is much more metally than thier latest album which are beginning to move toward that nu-metal as i lay dying style. yuck... so anyways i'd say fans vary for this cd. your either a "clayman" fan or a "lunar strain fan". if you liked this cd, go ahead and buy the "jester race/black ash inheritance". it is much like this one but the vocals have begun to improve.
May be a classic but..........2006-09-04
The vocals suck worse than ever, some of the guitar parts sound the same, and the production quality sucks. I truly believe that this re-issue is highly over-rated. Even the original pressings of these two release are over-rated. "Lunar Strain" and "Subterranean" are In Flames first two albums. With these two releases In Flames helped forge Melodic Death Metal. And they are great release, but they are not the best of what Melodic Death Metal has to offer. The drums are plain and boring, there is virtually no bass guitar heard(Heresy!). The guitar work is good, but not the best ever.
I feel that "Lunar Strain" and "Subterranean" are too highly over-rated releases that do not represent In Flames all that well.
( May 2, 2006) A classic...........2006-03-13
I originally wrote a review for this cd sometime ago but deleted it. I had said that this was my first death metal cd in a long time but I am going to wait and say that for the Cynic cd I'm going to get at the end of the week. Anyway, this is a combination of death metal like Death but mixed with melodic guitar playing similar to Iron Maiden. This is a good package here and has some sick songs on it especially Everlost part 1 and part 2. This style of death metal is usually called melodic death metal or Gothenburg metal. Gothenburg is the city in Sweden where this style supposedly originated from. This is a well done cd and I suggest to those who like good metal, In Flames, brutal metal mixed with melody, or good music to go pick this one up.
