Master of the power metal. 5/5 stars.......2006-12-23
Well I don't have alot to say about this album but it is a good album. The songs on here were amazing especially on SOLE SURVIVORS the guitar and solo work were awesome then MR. EGO/WHY?/ THE PERFECT GENTLEMEN & IN THE MIDDLE OF A HEARTBEAT. This was a pretty sweet album and their sound just keeps evolving to an even better sound and about SECRET ALIBI that was the most beutiful song with pure melody metal with excellent guitar solos. it's a must have for helloween fans buy it.
Back on Track.......2006-12-16
After unleashing a pair of albums (Keeper of the Seven Keys Parts I & II) that would set the power metal world on fire, Helloween served up two albums that can be described as bizarre (Pink Bubbles Go Ape) and confused (Chameleon) at best. In addition to these lackluster albums, much of the band's initial lineup had departed, which made 1994's Master of the Rings a "do or die" album.
This is the album Helloween should have released just after Keeper Part II. Master of the Rings is a tight, melodic power metal album that avoids the goofball humor of Pink Bubbles Go Ape (Heavy Metal Hamsters, anyone) as well as the watered down rock of Chameleon. Master of the Rings is a complete breath of fresh air, thanks in large part to new vocalist Andi Deris, whose tenure with melodic rockers Pink Cream 69 made him the ideal choice to replace Michael Kiske. Deris's powerful vocal delivery, plus his songwriting abilities made him a true asset to Helloween. This is a fantastic power metal album all the way through (OK, perhaps the obligatory instrumental introductory track doesn't add much), and one that should bring old school Helloween fans back to the fold.
Sanctuary finally got around to remastering the Helloween catalog earlier this year, and they certainly did it right. In addition to digitally remastered sound, the reissued version of Master of the Rings serves up an entire disc full of bonus tracks, including covers of Thin Lizzy, KISS, and Grand Funk Railroad, plus a crazy guitar extravaganza called Grapowski's Malmsuite 1001. You also get expanded liner notes, photos, etc. plus a nifty slipcase for the disc.
This is what a remastered version of a great album is supposed to look and sound like. If you're already a Helloween fan, it's time to replace your old version!
a long over looked power metal masterpiece.(it wants what it wants and what it wants is metal).......2006-11-13
hello fellow metallians. my name is brandon and i have been collecting power metal(classic metal, true metal, symphonic, epic,) or just to make a long sentence short, ive collected and worshiped real metal since i was old enough to turn the knobs on the stereo. it has allways captivated me and i could never get enough. i was super lucky to come across this cd in a used cd store in the middle of nowhere about 8 years ago. i can not say just how amazing this cd is. needless to say i have well over 1000 metal albums that i am extremely proud of and this is one of my favorites. andi deris really shines on this cd. the sound here is pure mellodic power metal. the songs where the rain grows and soul survivor are simply amazing and just explode with mellody. the lead riff is amazing and blends perfectly with overlapping lead mellody to make a sound that will captivate you. this album brings together the power of time of the oath and blends it with the mellody and precision musicianship of andi's former band pink cream 69. just listen to tracks like, the perfect gentelman andwhy, or mr ego. these songs sound so much like pc 69 its not even funny. this cd is loaded. there is not one song that sucks on here. from start to finish this album will put you in a metal trance and take you on an amazing journey through what is to me the best album andi deris has ever done with helloween. this cd is so catchy and full of hooks it would be very hard for any band to copy it. i truly respect helloween, and i absolutely love the walls of jhericho which is truly one of the first true power metal albums ever. and kai hansen is probably one of the biggest influences in power metal today, hell he is the god father of power metal. but any way do not over look this cd, it demands attention and reaches out for the hearts of power metal fans all over the world. also if you truly love power metal you should check out, silent force, freternia, pyramaze, star one, stormhammer, pretty maids, gamma ray, primal fear, iron savior, stormwitch, liege lord, rhapsody, sonata arctica, balance of power, axenstar, paragon, attacker, udo, grave digger, wolf, feinstein, warlock, priest(painkiller is simply amazing), eidolon, zonata, raw head rexx, into eternity, running wild, i could go on forever but now i must come to a close and just say that all you brothers and sisters in metal should really give this cd a try i promise you will not be dissapointed, this classic deserves a spot in every true metallians collection, your friend in metal, brandon whitson
Sort of like Judas Priest's .......2006-10-19
Okay, so it doesn't sound a damn thing like Judas Priest. That's not what I mean. What I mean is in the late 80's Judas Priest went in a bad direction with "Turbo" much like Helloween did with "Pink Bubbles Go Ape" and the even worse, "Chameleon". With Judas Priest, they released "Ram it Down" which was partly like the [...] from "Turbo" but it also was a step in the right direction, with a much heavier and better album as a whole but because of this, it was a very unbalanced album. This, essentially is the same thing that you see with "Master of the Rings".
In "Master of the Rings" there are a lot of great tracks in here, most of them taking place in the first half of the album. I would say track 1-6 are really great, my personal favorite being "Perfect Gentleman". This is a great song with a kicking riff.
However, after the "Perfect Gentlemen" it seems as though the band's creativity declines significantly. There just isn't a whole lot of interest and spark to them like the previous tracks which is why at the end of the day I give this album 3 stars, although I would lean towards 3 1/2. It's not a bad album at all, it's just very uneven.
Now, as far as this edition goes, I think it's worth it. No, the bonus tracks aren't GREAT but they aren't bad, some of them are pretty decent and in fact, I find a number of these better than the latter part of the album, excluding the final bonus track which is very strange. When I listened to this song, "Closer to Home" I felt as though I was not listening to Helloween but some different band with a completely different sound. The strangest part of thsi track though is that it doesn't even sound like Andi Deris, it sounds like a completely different singer entirely. I know Deris used to be with Pink Cream 69 but maybe this was a song intended for them? I don't know that for sure, I just know this is a very peculiar track.
Bottom line though, I reccomend this album to any Helloween fan or any power metal fan, just don't expect the best of the best here. Also, take into account that this is a return to the good Helloween with a brand new singer and drummer.
Excellent Debut For Andi Deris/Uli Kusch Helloween-Era, and the Rejuvination of a Giant.......2006-06-14
R.I.P. Ingo Schwichtenberg, this album is a great tribute to continue the helloween legacy, and take it in a new direction to revitalize the German Giant.
After two semi-poorly recieved albums (Pink Bubbles Go Ape and Chameleon), this is the first album to start retreading back into the right direction for Helloween. Andi Deris was brought into the mix to add new soaring vocals and Uli Kusch to fill the large void at drums left after the tragic suicide of the founding drummer Ingo Schwichtenberg. Both new members add fresh ideas and force to a band that had no direction at the time.
This 2006 edition is the same as the bonus edition put out by Castle Records in 1994 with the same 7 bonus tracks on a second cd, so if you have that version, this is not necessary to gain any new tracks. It is worth having if you want the take advantage of the new packaging (cool slipcover that matches the other re-masters and cool interview/biography linernotes). The 7 tunes are all cover songs, and were not available for many years(especially in 2001 when the re-mastered and released the single disc).
This album boast some of the most awsome "Anthemic" helloween songs that fans have come to know and love over the years. Perfect Gentleman, Where the Rain Goes, and Mr. Ego are all powerful, fist pumping, crowd chanting favorites (see High Live and the re-mastered better than raw) Plus the song "In the middle of a heartbeat" is a cool ballad of the fading hair metal days, with a Helloween twist.
So what this boils down to is buy this re-mastered version if you do not have the castle version, want a complete 2006 series, or do not already own a copy altogether. It is a must for any metal fan.

Not a complete miss, but not great either.......2001-05-28
Let me begin by saying that I was really, really looking forward to listening to this album and putting some thoughts down. After all, this was the first "real" Helloween album since the "Keepers..." and I was dying to hear the new vocalist. Though I should be fair and note that Michael Kiske was perhaps my favorite of all time; I was hoping my preconceived prejudices didn't ruin the listening experience for me. In fact, I was hoping beyond hope that I LOVED this album; alas, I did not.
It's not a bad album, don't get me wrong. It's just not a great album either. As a first listen, Andi Deris is a fairly decent vocalist (and I happen to know he gets better). They still have the wicked soloing of Weikath and Grapow, and new drummer Uli fills the beats well. Unfortunately, where they seem to be most hurting is the song writing. There are few, if any, songs here that reach out, grab you by the throat and scream in your face to RESPECT the fine metal you're hearing. Quite a few of the songs did the opposite - made me yawn. Sure, "Sole Survivor" and "Still We Go" are decent enough and seemingly say "hey, we're Helloween, we're back, we're going to carry on," which is fine and I'm glad. But "In the Middle of a Heartbeat" is actually a really bad Bon Jovi-ish ballad that was painful to listen to.
Like I said, if you're a Helloween fan, you'll certainly find stuff here to make you happy. Remember that it's a different band and that this ain't "Keepers..." anymore. However, it's the same band that began churning out gems not long after this disc; this is just where THAT Helloween began. Give it a listen and decide for yourself.
And a new era begins..........2001-02-07
This was a serious attempt of making credible a band that already had fallen from audience's grace. One thing above all must be understood:this is a COMPLETELY different band from what used to be the former Helloween version. This is a more melody-oriented band, more mature that tries hard to leave the past behind and face the 90's with another kind of attitude and music. Some can say that how a band can pretend to be credible with lyrics such as "Perfect gentleman"'s.But this takes us to another level of lyrics writing.Meaningful and often social critical, this band has evolved into something more mature as years go by.It's obvious that it's hard to stay with the same "Go to hell you all" that they showed back in their teens with songs as "I want out".The sound is more melodical and better thought, now with Mr Grapow more involved in the song writing process.Deris is such a good lyricist, with another conception of music, which helped to develop the new Helloween sound. He might not be the best singer on Earth,in fact, sometimes his nasal voice can drive you to turn off the stereo before the CD is over, but his lyrics and his musical ideas can make us forget for a while of his....huh,weird voice.Good album,it deserves credibility...and a second listen from all those that didn't like it.
I Can't Believe What The Other Guys Are Saying....Get It Now.......2000-10-30
I won't start saying that this CD is Helloween's best, but this is because I have listened to what they did next. This album is the start of the new Helloween, the one that later produced some of the best albums in my collection. You can divide this band into three periods, th Keeper era (which is absolutely excelent), the weird era (chameleon and pink bubbles) and the present one, to which this CD belongs. It has great songs, great drumming and guitars, and above all a wonderful singer and composer which is Andi Deris. IHe doesnt sing better than Kiske, but he certainly has his own style which is very unique. Someone said that the lyrics were disastrous, this is absolutely wrong. Just because they no longer write about typical heavy metal themes they suck, this is not true. They are just more down to earth now, with more "cotidian" stuff being said. Just buy the CD, do yourself a favour and realize that the only opinion that counts is your's.
THREE STARS FOR THEIR PERSISTENCE..........2000-06-30
First record with singer Deris; first record after drummer INgo's tragical suicide; first attempt to go back to real metal. But they didn't that. IT's an average album, making it clear to the fans that, as it happened with a lot of great metal bands of the 80's (Iron Maiden, Sabbath, Judas, Kiss), things would never be the same again. The message in this one is: "DOn't expect another Keeper of The Seven keys. We are not capable of writing stuff like that anymore". ANyway, there are some good tunes here.

Good Power Metal CD .......2006-07-13
Forget the history lesson here most everyone knows about this band.
I like this album. Songs are very catchy and have power. Not all the songs are good but most are, making This power Metal Album worth the money.
I am into 80's metal and it has that feel to it.
Vocals and music are excellent.
Out of all the Helloween Albums this CD and Keeper...Keys {though this album is not the classic as Keeper was} still get play time.
I would suggest this a must buy for Helloween and Power metal fan alike.
Helloween's Return to Heavy Metal.......2005-12-25
This may not be the best Helloween CD, but it marks a turning point in the band's history that would lead to masterpieces like 'The Time of the Oath' and 'The Dark Ride'. This is also the first CD with the vocalist Andi Deris. Deris' singing, while not as dynamic as Kiske's, has an edge to it which gives newer Helloween albums a distinctive sound. Here is the breakdown song by song...
1. Irritation: instrumental intro
2. Sole Survivor: 5/5 Power metal at its finest
3. Where the Rain Grows: 4/5 Considered a Helloween classic
4. Why?: 4/5 Very different for a Helloween song... good tho
5. Mr Ego: 4/5 Slow and heavy, great lyrics (about Kiske)
6. Perfect Gentleman: 4/5 Catchy & fun in a Dr. Stien way
7. The Game is on: 1/5 Trys hard to be a fun song... too hard...
8. Secret Alibi: 3/5 Fun lyrics, but overall a forgettable song
9: Take me Home: 3/4 VERY weird... takes time to appreciate
10:In the Middle of a Heartbeat: 5/5 One of their best ballads!
11:Still we Go: 4/5 Great power metal closer with good lyrics
'Master of the Rings' isn't the best Helloween CD out there, but still is worth having in your collection.
A Very Good Album.......2005-11-20
I first got into Helloween with Keeper Of The Seven Keys-Part I and then I stopped following them. It wasn't until I got a double cd called The Encyclopedia of German Metal in 1997 that I re-discovered Helloween with the song Why? By this time of course lead singer Michael Kiske was out and Andi Deris from the band Pink Cream 69 was in. Master Of Rings is full of great vocal melodies, good riffs, and catchy choruses. My favorites are Mr. Ego, Why, Where The Rain Grows, Perfect Gentleman, Secret Alibi, and the ballad In The Middle Of A Heartbeat. I know a lot of long time fans were not happy with Master Of Rings but I like this kind of melodic power metal so I continue to follow them with each album.
Somewhat of a return.......2005-08-01
After 1993's Chameleon flop, Helloween returned to some of their former glory with this album. Enter into the fold new singer Andi Deris who had the daunting task of replacing Michael Kiske. Originally released in 1994, Master of the Rings contained a good deal of variety with each track. Highpoints on MOTR include Sole Survivor, Where the Rain Grows, Perfect Gentlemen, Why?, Still We Go, and the ballad In The Middle of a Heartbeat. Not bad throughout, but this album could have been stronger. Mr. Ego and Secret Alibi should have been b-sides in my opinion. If you are lucky enough, you may find an original 18-track U.S. version of Master of the Rings. Released on Halloween 1994, the U.S. version of Master of the Rings is a 2CD set including all 7 b-sides! If the b-sides Can't Fight Your Desire and Star Invasion would have replaced Mr. Ego and Secret Alibi on the Master of the Rings, the album would have been much stronger than the 11-track version available here. Still, Master of the Rings is a good album and deserves to be in anyone's metal collection.

Andi Deris Gives New Life to the Band.......2003-05-19
Before Master of the Rings, Helloween was a dying band. After releasing two absolute failures in the sales department(Pink Bubbles Go Ape, Chameleon), Helloween was ready to call it quits. Michael Kiske had parted ways with the band. But just when it was thought to be over for this band, which pioneered the power metal sound, they recruited PinkCream69 vocalist Andi Deris for a last go. Needless to say, it worked! Andi's style is a bit darker, deeper, and more graveled. This worked out to an amazing sound when combined with the Helloween musicianship. Overall, the band has reinvented itself and once again risen to the peaks of metaldom. "Master of the Rings" is one of the best albums from the "Deris Era". The opening track(preceeded by "Irritation"), "Sole Survivor" has a an amazingly catchy chorus, not unlike many other Helloween tracks, along with a hard, driving beat. The rest of the album is well balanced and displays Andi's vocal versatility, including a ballad of sorts with "In the Middle of a Heartbeat". Overall, this album is a great listen for any fan of metal, or, more specifically, Helloween.
